Immigration is always a hot topic in the Wakatipu. The need for workers to feed our thriving tourism industry seems to be endless. Inevitably, some of those workers take a particular shine to New Zealand and look to turn a working holiday into permanent residency. This is a story told over and over again in Queenstown. Local and national media have picked up on our new Clutha Southland Member of Parliament Hamish Walker’s crusade to help one Queenstown based family in their fight to stay in New Zealand. However, there are many more stories that do not get headlines, and most do not have a happy ending. It was like losing a family member when one of my friends also an employee was sent packing by Immigration NZ last month. And that decision was under the last National Government’s immigration policy. Our new Labour/NZ First/Green Government is promising a much tougher stance. That’s a scary thought for business people like myself who are already feeling the staffing pinch. To rub salt into my wounds and others affected by seemingly heartless and mystifyingly inconsistent decisions by Immigration NZ, our new Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern makes light of Kiwi citizenship by joking that British singer Ed Sheeran would need to answer a couple of silly questions to establish his credentials for New Zealand citizenship - Do you like Pineapple Lumps? Are you willing to wear jandals in semi-inappropriate situations? (www.stuff.co.nz, 29 November). We love a good joke from those whose decisions and political policies can rip the heart out of communities like Queenstown. Hilarious.

The now Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters, when he stood in front of a packed crowd at the pre-election debate at the Queenstown Memorial Centre and argued for a cut in immigration numbers, claimed that many qualifying for visas now do not have the skills they say they have. Particularly chefs, who according to Peters “can’t even boil an egg”. My response to the Ardern/Peters comedy show, please ask Ed Sheeran this question: Can you boil an egg? Because in today’s Lakes Weekly and on Queenstown’s online job site www. jobfix.co.nz there are 150 new hospitality job vacancies listed in Queenstown, 46 of which are for cooks and chefs. This skills shortage three weeks away from Christmas and New Year when Queenstown will have over 50,000 visitors a day all looking for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I’ve came home (Queenstown CBD) just after 8:30pm after a whole day of work outdoors in the sun, tired and hungry. My flatmates were on the patio, they had a beer and were jaming on one djembe and one cajon. They played for about 20 minutes and then stopped, just to talk and socialise after their day of hard work. While I was preparing my dinner, just past 10pm a noise control guy appeared like a ghost out of nowhere, we stared at him, surprised and perplexed as to why he was there? With papers in his hand he said that he had just come as a friendly warning that somebody was complaining about the noise at 8:15pm! We asked him to inform us what is the problem was because no one had touched those instruments since around 9:15pm. He said that it was just a friendly warning and we need to be considerate of others as some might be working nightshifts or in the early morning and want to rest before work. That was a bit too much for me as I live in a house behind a big hotel construction site where firstly workers started destroying old parts of the hotel with huge concrete cutters from 8am for 6 days a week for months and then when construction
workers started building the new building, I was being woken up with all sorts of noise from there. Nail gun symphony suported by heavy drumming of earth stabilising pylons being driven to the ground was just a start! And that was going on for months!! How is that for nice sleep after nightshift!! I did not complain as I knew that there is not any reason to. So on what grounds did that idiot of a person send the unfortunate noise control guy to us, I would like to know!! I was polite to the unfortunate guy as there is no reason to “shoot the messenger” but I was fuming inside! What if the complainant was a construction site worker who needs to wake up at 6am to torture nightshift workers?? Is there any system put in place to avoid this sort of nonsence happening?? Or what should I do to remind the inconsiderate pr**k that this is not the way! Ah and by the way there is a big B-day party in and behind our house with multiple string and percussion instruments being played with vocal support loudly right up to 10pm!! Peace and considerateness out.

Response from QLDC We were thrilled to see more major supermarkets make the decision to move away from single use plastic bags – it’s a great step in the right direction. We are currently reviewing our rubbish collection contracts in preparation for 1 July 2019 and have already flagged the future of the blue bags as something to review as part of this process.
Camping I had the pleasure of recently staying again in our Camper Van at the Lakeview Holiday Park. On this occasion it was to attend the Marathon and partake of the wonderful activities Queenstown and the camping ground has to offer my family. However, I was somewhat disappointed to hear from my fellow campers that the Lakeview camping area may be disestablished by the Council in the future. I did ask the Camp Manager and he advised me that he was not aware of any firm decisions being made in this regard.
Could I kindly ask if the council is planning to close the Park, if so when and what alternative arrangements they have made? The camping ground appears to be very popular, it always appears to be full or near so with NZ and international visitors. As there is currently very little alternative choices in the area, do we then have join the every increasing number of people Freedom camping on public reserves and rest areas? If so do the council intend to improve the facilities in these areas to cope with the increase in numbers?

Response from QLDC Council along with multiple agencies, including DOC are working on the future of camping opportunities in the district. This will include opportunities to continue to camp in the Queenstown area. The Lakeview Motel units will be retained and no final decision has been made on when this may change or where camp grounds will be located in the future but the desire to be centrally based is acknowledged.

Tom I agree its very confusing but if the arrows in lanes approaching the roundabouts are clear, everyone will know what they should do. A couple of weeks ago I turned right at the BP roundabout coming from the airport towards Arrowtown from the right hand lane. Some idiot driving a silver Land Rover/Range Rover in the left hand lane also decided to turn right towards Arrowtown - completely ignoring the arrows in his lane showing he could only turn left or go straight ahead into the BP. He almost crashed into me by the cemetery then spent the next 500 meters yelling obscenities out the window and filming me with his handheld camera phone. People just need to look at what is painted on the road and stick to it.

Duty Manager:
We are Looking for the right person to fill the role of Duty Manager. A valid Duty Manager’s certificate is a must, applicants must have at least 1 year minimum experience in a supervisor role within a NZ bar environment. Applicants must have a fun and outgoing attitude, great communication skills along with amazing customer service. Applicants must be adaptable to shift work and rotating rosters. Good rate of pay for the right candidate.
Bar Staff:
We are looking for someone with an outgoing personality and excellence customer service to work in our busy bar Loco Cantina. From top notch Mexican food, crazy week night parties to Queenstown’s biggest DJ acts and live gigs, you’ll get to experience it all.
