Queenstown is unique for many reasons, but the community vibe amongst the locals is pretty darn special. We should be proud of our hotpot of individuals from all over the world, sharing a common love for the outdoors and living the good life together. When I first landed in Queenstown last winter, I was amazed at this community and how friendly everyone was. There’s a real sense of ‘we’re in it together’, whether you love skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, adrenaline-sports, drinking or travelling, just the fact you’re choosing to stay in Queenstown is enough for locals to lend a hand, have a chat and share their story. And with every vibrant town, the online community is buzzing, with many Queenstown Facebook pages for buying and selling, accommodation and advice available. I lost my backpack with my passport, car keys and purse inside, yet 24 hours of a post on Facebook, I’d tracked it down and got it back. But there is darker side of the QT social media community. It seems, despite the friendliness of those on the streets, it’s OK to abuse each other behind the safety of the screens. The ‘Queenstown Whinge’ page was closed down by its founder because it “got too toxic”. On other well used Facebook pages there are trolls determined to spread hate. There have been numerous examples of sleazy jokes, sexist comments, and abuse towards those asking for advice, looking for a room to rent or selling something. And with each comment, I get more confused at the bi-polarity of certain Queenstown locals.

It baffles me in such a unique and open-minded place as this, we can harbour any kind of angry or negative online community. We’re made up of a medley of nationalities who have chosen, and not been forced, to live here. We’re one of the few places in the world where travel-lovers and adrenaline junkies are tempted to stay and settle. We’re accepting and friendly when face-to-face, so what’s different when you’re on your phone or laptop? And let’s not forget, Queenstown’s local community is surprisingly small. Despite the huge number of tourists visiting each year, our long-term residents are made up of a small and cheerful army of ski and mountain workers, entrepreneurs, tourism and hospitality staff, council members, builders, mechanics and many more, who are all connected in some way or other. In Queenstown, everyone knows everyone. Which is why it seems even more nonsensical to want to throw verbal insults at each other on the QT Facebook pages. Online abuse might be accepted by the rest of the world, but those trolls also aren’t likely to bump into each other on the street. Rosie Wheat Barmaid, blogger and boarder.

Lycra - Don’t Like
We have barely begun Spring and already the cyclists have hit the road to make the most of the already beautiful days, but this is not a whinge about cyclists and their lack of ability to share the road. While there has been many a whinge about women in leggings prancing around town, little has been said about males with less than desirable bodies wearing lycra while out on their Sunday rides.
What these males have failed to realise is that lycra is not forgiving, it likes to show every fold, bump and roll. So boys, unless you are carrying a six pack, lycra is not for you. Please dress for the body you have, not the body you want.
He said ‘excuse me’ with a smile then suddenly took a pic of me without saying anything! Then he asked me ‘is your dog having a poo on the property?’ I said ‘no, if he does I always pick it up’ then I showed him that I had a poo bag. He said ‘if your dog does a poo on the property, next time I have a picture and you will get a fine’ then he drove away.
I get that we are in the lead up to the election but to have a bunch of arrogant, upity, dressed in blue youngins jumping around on the streets of Queenstown was a bloody distraction whilst driving.
I didn’t have my phone that morning so I couldn’t take his pic, but I have his reg number. He didn’t give me his identity so I guess he is not from the council. If I did wrong and then he took a picture that’s fine, but he hasn’t got any evidence and I’m innocent. He should’ve just given me a warning instead of taking a picture without permission. I’ve been living here for more than 15 years, but I never felt so unsafe before. He made me feel absolutely sick that day. Very terrified. So sad as well.

Town Centre Bikers What is it with the bikers around the town centre?? They seem to have forgotten the road rules and common curtesy. From riding the wrong way down one way streets to riding up on the footpath, bikers around town seem to think they can bike where-ever they want, whenever they want to. Just the other morning when I was walking to work a cyclist was biking down the wrong way of Rees Street and then when a car came round the corner jumped up onto the foot path.

A Creepy Guy One morning I was walking with my dog around a local residential area and I saw a guy sitting in his car with the passenger window going down, so I thought he might be my friend or he’s gonna ask something but he was a total stranger.

So although this was funny to read this morning as it really was a pretty daft drunken exchange, it’s probably not really worthy of a whinge. Probably not my classiest moment if I’m being honest and if I see you out and about in town, I will happily apologise in person. Latin America & Spain Film Fest: From this Friday through to Sunday the 17th, 11 films from South America will be shown at the Queenstown Art Centre as part of the Latin America and Spain Film Festival. With comedies and dramas from across mutiple South American countries, the aim is to give the public a chance to learn more about the different cultural and social aspects of the region through the big screen.
