This coming long weekend, June 2nd - 5th 2017, Queenstown will be illuminated with art and sculpture for the second LUMA light festival. Over 10,000 locals and visitors from all over the world attended LUMA last year, which transformed Queenstown’s famous Gardens and lakefront into a dazzling display of glowing art. The festival is free, say that again FREE, showcasing a collection of stunning light sculptures and installations from New Zealand and international artists, all designed to take people on a mystical journey whilst stimulating their creative senses. This will be like falling down the rabbit hole right in your own backyard. LUMA is a community event. People from all over Queenstown get involved, from schools, businesses and volunteer groups. People are drawn to Queenstown to enjoy its many outdoor adventures, however this event is about putting the spotlight on our creative scene and encouraging the wider community to interact and get involved.

Kiwi musician P Digsss caught up with LWBTV’s Lauren Prebble at World Bar last Wednesday. Catch Lauren’s interview on LWBTV’s Top 5 video on the Lakes Weekly facebook page.

A total of 28 installations and 13 sculptures will be displayed throughout the Gardens area, amongst the highlights an interactive deep forest experience, futuristic pond, mountains, and video projections to take the best of you out of your comfort zones. The team behind Queenstown’s Guerrilla Drive-In will deliver a free outdoor cinema showing a selection of short films and features each night from 6pm with The World Bar putting together The LUMA Lounge where mulled wine and some hot munchies will keep the chill away.

Lake Scum

As a resident of Queenstown for over a decade now, I am becoming more and more concerned with the gradual deterioration of our environment and obvious contamination of our once prestine Lake Wakatipu waters. Living up Goldfield Heights I am blessed to have a wonderful view over the Lake and thus have a unique perspective of the surface of our lake when the rising sun is at a particular angle but more and more regularly I’m seeing a strip of what looks like scum or foam floating in a series of parallel lines or sometimes just one long line visible down the length of the lake (above the river current beneath?)

approach? But, my chief suspicion is that I suspect its the residue of 1080 or the poisons that are being sprayed over the pine tree lands - that obviously ends up in our waters after rainfalls! If we residents are drinking Lake Wakatipu water then no no amount of replacing one chemical (Chlorine) with another, is ultimately going to be good for our human consumption and, like the “snot” problem, I believe this contamination of out waters needs urgent and serious attention!

Are you still enchanted by the natural beauty of the Wakatipu Basin?

FACEBOOK/WEBSITE COMMENTS

I can’t help but wonder if it’s not being caused by the Commercial airlines’ aeroplanes who eject surplus fuel over the lake as they descend for their landing

Editorial - 601 No doubt having left behind Donald J Trump and all those gun-toting crazies, anything else would be wonderfull.

Response from Michele Poole, Qtago Regional Council

Street Walker

Thanks for the chance to reply to this, as a couple of other people have been asking about the slicks recently.

Last year in Wakatipu there were complaints of similar slicks – they were from pine and willow pollen.

The slicks are formed on the lake surface by Langmuir circulation patterns which form under very specific wind conditions. That’s why they tend to come and go reasonably regularly.

ORC staff will be sampling out on the lake this week (probably by the time you read this) and if the slicks are present, we’ll take samples for analysis.

Response from Jen Andrews, Queenstown Airport From an aviation perspective we can certainly confirm that aircraft do not jettison fuel into the lake.

Who Knows The Giveway Rules? Ok so it has been 5 years since the giveway rules changed, and the intersection at the corner of Humphrey Street and Douglas Street has been changed for around 1 year now - I think that is more than enough time to get your act together.

Check the road code guys, and stop honking at me, flashing your lights and hurling abuse when you are in the wrong. One day, if you hit my car, you will realise very very soon YOU were in the wrong, take a refresher people and get off my case!

There are 2 giveway signs on both sides of Douglas Street - so guess what - its a controlled intersection and that means if I am turning right out of the hospital side and you are turning left into Humphrey St, I HAVE RIGHT OF WAY!

OhSoOverIt

Queenstown Out Of Control I have lived in Queenstown for the best part of 20 years and it has been good to me and I miss the place if I am away but more and more I see the place is being ruined by greed and seems no one is controlling the development with huge ugly buildings and being told that we need to accept the growth.

ASK ME

Nice refreshing view, I’ve lived there 10 years and it gets better every year. People who complain about tourists and congestion need to travel and realise how awesome it is to live in a place where you can be out in the vast mountains doing epic things every day and still have a thriving social scene with a beer by the lake with quality people. If you don’t like living here then you are doing Queenstown wrong and maybe should just move somewhere else and are up some accomadtion for someone who appreciates vibrant mountain town life.... I for one love living somewhere that people want to come and visit.

Tom Bloody Drones - 601 This whinge is by far one of the biggest “first world” problems some people have here. I really had a good laugh reading this. Maybe next time you go hiking and someone crosses your path and stares at you for 2 seconds longer than you’d like them to, you can go on a rant about how they “invaded your privacy” and “made you feel watched”.

Luma: This Friday to Monday, from 5pm to 10pm head along the lake front to the Queenstown Gardens and enjoy the wonder that is Luma! Luma is an award-winning arts and culture festival that lights up Queenstown every year with art, light, music and colour. Artwork from local, national and international artists transforms Queenstown’s famous lakefront and gardens as part of a number of winter celebrations that welcomes the beginning of darkness with light. Nood: New objects of desire, or nood is opening a pop-up store in Remarkables Park in Queenstown on Saturday 3 June. With a reputation for quality and good design, yet affordable homeware and furniture nood is your one stop shop for new and desirable products. Queenstown will be Nood’s 13th store and to celebrate they are offering 50% off storewide for all noodist club members. New and existing members are welcome and there will be free sign up for the noodist club during opening week. Bungalow: Ever striving for higher heights and more profound musical experiences, Ladi6 has once again flipped the script to create the Royal Blue 3000 EP. The result is an adventurous vivid wash of copacetic synaesthetics, that revels in process disruption without sacrificing scrupulous songcraft. Now she is taking it to the regions and will be performing this Thursday and Friday at Bungalow. Tickets are available from Bungalow and Bound Bookstore

What our clients say...

Secure a suitable new team member with The Lakes Weekly Bulletin In the past we have used various media both off and online to varying degrees of success. Recently we made the decision to use the Lakes Weekly Bulletin to secure the services of a new receptionist. As a long term employer in the Queenstown area, I was pleasantly surprised by the co-operation of the LWB team in ensuring our advertisement was properly edited, placed and that a follow up message was received from a LWB team member asking us if we required further assistance. As a result of the advertisement we were able to receive a large number of quality applications from which we will no doubt be able to secure a suitable new team member. Many thanks LWB.
