After arriving in Queenstown less than two weeks ago, this little town has already won me over. Queenstown seems to have it all: raw natural beauty like no other, a bustling CBD, and adventure sports galore. But as newbies like myself gawk at the scenery, embark on tramps, and gush over the restaurant and bar scene, it seems many locals are caught up in the negative aspects of living in an international tourist destination. Having grown up in a tourist town in California, I’m familiar with letting my view of home become obstructed by the negatives. The pristine beaches, revered redwood forests, and sparkling coastlines of Northern California have sort of faded into the background; even the Golden Gate Bridge has lost a bit of its oomph. Traffic, lack of affordable housing, tourism, cost of living, and the rising price of avocados are at the forefront of most conversations in my hometown. Sound familiar? But let me assure you, Queenstowners: you’ve got something special here. I’ve seen mountains, but the Remarkables are drastic, daunting, and almost seem alive as the visibility and cloud covershift throughout the day. I’ve seen beautiful lakes, but the deep blues of Lake Wakatipu and its waterways are absolutely stunning. On my daily walks around the lake, I’m enchanted by the autumn foliage, decorated with splashes of gold and copper. Fellow travellers’ heeding’s of endless traffic, throngs of tourists, and lack of accommodation fuelled a fear that Queenstown would be an over-hyped, overpriced, and overcrowded tourist trap. But as I rolled into town a fortnight ago, I was pleasantly surprised to find a charming, energetic yet understated ski town.

Yes, Queenstown is touristy, but not obnoxiously so. The tourism industry here is not as ‘in-your-face’ as some friends had warned me it would be, but more a subtle undertone of the town. And although there is a constant stream of visitors coming and going, the town still has a strong local vibe. The fact that Queenstown has balanced a robust tourism industry while maintaining its character speaks volumes about this place. The cost of living and lack of affordable housing are no worse than places I’ve lived in California. I realise traffic congestion and crowds will drastically increase once the ski season sets in, but it can’t be worse than summer months in Santa Cruz, CA. In part, local’s criticism of ‘what Queenstown is becoming/has become’ is good. It means you won’t let the place succumb to tourism and development. It shows the community will hold its ground when it comes to protecting the Wakatipu. But I hope to remind you, with a fresh pair of eyes, what a gem this town is. As I begin to settle in to my new life in Queenstown, I can’t imagine my awe for this place fading in any way. But who knows, maybe you’ll next see me on the Lakes Weekly whinge page. Asian Flatmates Wanted???
Does anyone else find it a bit strange/racist that people post ads for rooms available to rent, but specifically say that they are only looking for Asians? Imagine if a Caucasian were to post an ad for a room for rent that said: “Room Available for White People”, or “Seeking White Couple to Share Home”... People would have an absolute field day over this and accuse the op of being a white supremacist!
I can understand the desire to share accommodation with someone who shares one’s cultural values or speaks the same language, however, why wouldn’t the advert imply something along those lines (i.e., “Room Available - Chinese Speaking Couple Preferred”)? It’s 2017 and race should never be a factor when selecting ideal flatmates!

Pride In Your Premises After watching the ‘Pride in your Premises’ segment on LWBTV, I must say I think Mayor Jim Boult is off his rocker with this one. The initiative – which rewards noticeable improvement in storefront appearance, is condescending and a complete insult to shopkeepers who have always been diligent about keeping their store fronts tidy. Its true, Queenstown has started looking a bit grubby, but it’s not the shopkeepers who are at fault. If anything, it’s the landlords and the council that need to take responsibility. Landlords around this town charge exuberant rent, but then aren’t keen to lend a hand when the shopkeepers who rent from them need renovations to keep their store fronts tidy.
In addition to landowners, the council needs to step up their efforts to clean up Queenie. Up in Arthur’s Point, there’s graffiti on the water pump building on Edith Cavell Bridge Road that’s been there since February. Rubbish bins are constantly spilling over, there’s broken glass in the street, cigarette butts on the sidewalks, litter in the parks – all of which the council is accountable for. If you ask me, pressure to tidy up should be eased off of shopkeepers and this whole initiative should be redirected at the landlords and the Queenstown Lakes District Council themselves.

Editorial - 600 The reason why the Government is trying to “tighten up” its immigration policy, is because the infastructure cannot handle the 80,000 immigrants coming to our country each year. People are welcome to come and visit, but we dont necessarily want them all to stay here. Surely you can see that the roads here cant handle it, there is a huge shortage of houses to home them, and we dont want any more. They can bugger off back to India or China, and leave us in peace.

This past Saturday, I hiked Queenstown Hill with my partner. It was a brilliant crisp morning; the sun was shining, birds chirping. We were enjoying the silence and spectacular view at the top of the hill, when all of the sudden a bloody drone zooms right in front of us.

Winter’s charms lie in the snow-capped mountains around the Cromwell Basin, quiet roads and valleys and in our calm, crisp days, still great for walking and exploring. Check out how the day is looking on our new webcam at Cromwell.org.nz and come over for the day. There are too many track options to list where you can gain great views and enjoy a walk – best reference is the website or i-site – but for a few starters try Stewart Town at Bannockburn or the 45th Parallel near Lowburn. The first is accessed off Felton Road and takes you up through old gold mining tailings past caves and sluiced cliffs. There’s lovely stone ruins and 100 year old still-fruiting trees, plus fabulous views of the vineyards on the homeward loop. It’s an easy hour and dogs are welcome. Along the left shore of Lake Dunstan the 45th Parallel is marked by a roadside monument. Cross the highway and ascend 400 - plus steps onto a glacial terrace. This serves as a grandstand to vast vistas up and down the valley. The track follows the terrace top then down through a gully, - slippery underfoot –to the very pretty Lowburn Inlet. There are toilets and a playground here and it’s a sheltered picnic spot. For cyclists too, tracks link to here from Cromwell and continue right to Bannockburn and beyond. With the late harvests just finishing, stalls have apples and pears as well as nuts, olive oil, saffron and more. The season’s new wines are still being made but there’s plenty of earlier vintages to try. Year round activities to enjoy which are unique to this area include a visit to the Cromwell Heritage Precinct, built by volunteers about 27 years ago. The re-created village oozes schist-clad charm from every stone wall. It’s home to cafes, galleries and craftspeople and has historic displays in most buildings –all free to visit. There’s also white-knuckle action in the form of jetboating the Kawarau River, tandem hang-gliding, heli-sightseeing and the famous Highlands Motor Sport Park.
