There’s been some interesting movements in the halls of power recently which have got me wondering: what is it about the Queenstown business community that thinks it’s a good idea to ask for public feedback and then completely ignore it? This week Queenstown Airport Corporation presented its Statement of Intent following last year’s community ‘discussion’. The community, particularly those living in Frankton, sent a clear message that rapidly increasing the noise boundaries was unacceptable. Rarely does the community come together to give such a strong message on any issue but this was one. Yet the airport’s Statement of Intent feels as if that conversation never happened. Similarly, Destination Queenstown got the extra taxpayer funding it was seeking to go off and encourage even faster growth into Queenstown. I recall reading significant push back on this both from residents and businesses who are being pushed out of town by increasing rents, lack of diversity in the downtown area and the march toward total annihilation of downtown Queenstown for locals. This year, there was an old-fashioned shoulder season and because few locals actually have a reason or want to come to downtown anymore the remaining local businesses really suffered with few visitors and even fewer locals. Historically the locals could provide a buffer in those slow times. Over-tourism is a real thing as anyone who has been to Paris, Venice or Barcelona recently can attest, yet the corporates in Queenstown don’t seem to be taking this on board. It’s all about more growth in the tourism sector, regardless of sustainability and yet there is little recognition that the very reason that people want to come to Queenstown is at risk. Yes, it’s stunning, but all the resources are under severe pressure (particularly the once-pristine water) and the quality of our infrastructure is also under pressure. Council seems, on the surface, to recognise that climate change is a serious issue, agreeing to join other local bodies around the world in declaring a climate emergency. I say on the surface because agreeing with the airport’s Statement of Intent and funding DQ seems to fly in the face of working to reduce climate emissions. 99% of the locals I talk to recognise we enjoy the amenities we have because we have a mix of residents and visitors and putting in the bed tax will help that. What those locals don’t agree with however is that unbridled growth is necessary or desirable. More hotels will put more pressure on our water infrastructure which, coupled with a changing environment, a changing climate and aging infrastructure is already impacting the lake and our rivers. It seems to me that we, the little guys, are being taken for fools. Big businesses are ticking off the ‘communication with community’ box, then disregarding the feedback and going on their merry way. I’m not sure that’s a good idea. Simon Cox Resident

PREPARATION IS KEY! Buying and selling in our fast paced Queenstown market can sometimes seem quite overwhelming, especially for first timers! Taking shortcuts in preparation time can cause all sorts of unnecessary and opportunities lost. Our message this month is to be prepared! Here to help is Stewart Mitchell and his team from Loan Market Queenstown. Stew and his team have put together some handy advice and tips to get you finance ready!

Step 1 Book an appointment to see a mortgage broker This initial step will help you understand what your lending options are and most importantly help you work out your budget boundaries. There are some great lending options out there and Stew and the team will work with ALL the available lenders to secure the BEST finance deals for you.

“I’m a first time buyer - can I bid at auction?” YES! You will need to follow the steps above and get the finance process started at least 10-12 days before the auction date!

Step 2 Get your finance pre-approval early So you’ve found that dream property and are ready to make an offer! Great! • Now you need to complete your sale and purchase agreement with your agent or submit your Particulars and Conditions of sale to your broker if you intend to bid at auction.

How much deposit do I need to purchase a property? Existing residential property – Minimum of 10% deposit New residential property – Minimum of 10% deposit Turn key property – Minimum of 5% deposit Existing investment property – Minimum 20%-30% deposit New investment property – Minimum 10%-20% deposit

• First time buyers with less than 20% deposit will require a property valuation before your finance can be approved. • Allow up to five working days for initial pre approval and another five working days for your valuation (and don’t forget to budget around $1,000 for your valuation costs). • NB – Some lenders are offering up to $3,000 cash back as a gift when you draw down your mortgage, which can help offset these costs!

Preparation for sellers | What do I need to do and what are the costs? Order a building inspection report four weeks before putting your property on the market. This will give you the chance to fix any issues that may be off putting to a buyer and enable your purchasers to offer with confidence – Cost Approx. $895 inc GST. Order a LIM report from QLDC – Allow for a minimum of 10 working days for turnaround – Cost $230 inc GST. Book your complimentary market consultation with your real estate agent to discuss the best method of sale to extract the best possible results. That’s where I come in! If you are thinking of selling and would like to schedule a friendly chat to discuss you future plans, I would love to hear from you!

Post Postal Problems

I am in the process of renewing a work visa and have to send my Passport to the Department of Immigration. Off I went to post it off and find that the Queenstown Post Office has closed. This apparently was a well known fact but somehow I seemed to have missed that bit of news. Anyway I was told that some of the Post Office services had been transferred to the nearby Night n Day store. However while I am sure the staff of the Night n Day are reputable and honest,

I am really not that comfortable leaving my most important document in a convenience store when my entire future rests on it getting to its destination. Anyway after some investigation it seems there are some services that are still available at the Post Office Box Lobby (behind the Pig & Whistle) as well as at the Night n Day. I guess my whinge is that NZ Post have done a pretty poor job explaining what gets done where especially when so many people are still reliant on postal services in this town. Unhappy Pat

You see me rolling, without insurance. I’ve had an spotless record. Hand on heart, I’ve never had a crash! I’ve never crashed into anybody! But yet I still pay for insurance, just in case I dent a BMW.

It was just outside of Frank’s, we walked to the car to find a HUGE white scrape on the bumper. No note, no CCTV camera in the carpark, no witnesses. Nothing.

3rd party insurance would help cover that cost for the victim’s vehicle and the damage to mine will need to come out of my own pocket, capeesh.

Just unnecessary financial drain inflicted on me. We had a friend who fell victim to a hit’n’run except their vehicle actually was a BMW. They had CCTV footage! They never found the person responsible. There’s too many stories like this. So, this is a message to all those people who hit’n’run. You sad sorry sacks. Pucker up, own up to your mistake and GODSAKES get insurance because others could fall victim to your sucky driving!

So it really peeves me off when someone (who’s probably crashed into many bumpers) hits mine and does a runner leaving me with the cost!! I shouldn’t have to up my insurance premium to cover lowlife hit’n’runs!

Happy and grateful migrant

Million dollar town - third world infrastructure We already don’t have good houses to live in as even with the bylaw in effect there’s no enforcement. No place to park - everything is either too far or was taken over by local businesses. Buses don’t show up in convenient hours and don’t have stops where it would be needed - if you need public transport for work you’re out of luck.

Then our roads are a patchwork and even when a company is hired to fix something the result is usually slightly better than what it was. And then there’s the whole new council building that’s gonna cost ratepayers dearly. I don’t even know what else to say just stating the situation as it is leaves me out of words... #Nowords

Facebook / Website comments Reply to Editorial ‘Take Care’ Well, of all people I ever seen coming to this place for the season none were really worried about their health, after all the whole idea seems to be the opposite as soon as they leave their parents’ eyesight. Plus on the mental health side I’d say to NOT get your name in the system if you plan to stay long term. Immigration will ask for a psychiatric evaluation - very costly and mandatory - and that might lead to either your visa getting denied or your taxes ramped up. So yeah, there’s that too. Reply to ‘Cold Case Cluedo’ I noticed a man working in the fruit and veg section of one of Queenstown’s largest supermarkets on the weekend who kept using his hand to wipe his runny nose, then continue touching the produce. Disgusting!! Comment to ‘What’s Kingston’ (QTV)

That’s a wrap on another Super Rugby season. Congrats to the Crusaders and their fans. Another title won in typically no thrills negative spoiling style. But effective they are, and you can’t argue with the tactic’s if it wins 10 titles. No prizes for most entertaining rugby, however I will give the entertainment nod to the Jaguares who played fantastic rugby all season and gave Southern Hemisphere rugby fans hope that we can starve off the threats from the Northern game and keep rugby alive down under.

THE ORIGINAL TIPPING COMP

Scott is the sport and rugby guru at the Lakes Weekly Bulletin and a Hurricanes tragic. He won the Lone Star Super Rugby competition in 2016 the only time the Hurricanes won Super Rugby. No coincidence there!

Naomi Robinson

Speaking of titles, the pinnacle of local rugby tipping competitions, The Lonestar Comp, was won by Steve Ridley. His name will be etched into history alongside other great Queenstowners on the glory wall of the Lonestar. Well done Steve and well done Naomi, Dave and Team Lonestar for another well run competition. How Naomi managed to take the top tipping percentage in our Lakes Weekly rugby tips I will never know. Must have been a computing error or something. Thanks to Justin Marshall and Brett Anderson for making up the numbers and contributing your picks each week. Now for All Black action, and as Steve Hansen would say, time to flush the toilet and move on.

Scott ‘The Truth’ Stevens

Naomi is not a rugby expert, and instead relies on luck and advice from her tipping comp contestants.

Justin Marshall As a former All Black and current Sky Sports commentator Justin is probably the most qualified to win the whole comp.

Brett Anderson Brett has a passion for rugby as the coach for the Wakatipu team, which may give him an advantage in the comp.

GIG Review Who: Tiny Pieces of 8 Where: Sherwood, Workshop When: 06/07/19 Reviewer: Chi Bangs

Rating: That was a waste of time. I talked during the performance. It was mmmk. Totally worth it. Must See!

It’s been awhile since I’ve frequented the Sherwood Manor. “I usually play a pump organ for that song.” The drawcard to get me back to that sustainable household was Dunedin psychedelic folk band, Tiny Pieces of 8 playing They’re a quirky bunch of different aged multi instrumentalists! on Saturday night with local muso Tom Maxwell as the support. 3 of them can play the double bass! Wooden Boat had them throw down egg shaker shakes, double bass slaps, rim taps, Must’ve missed a Sherwood Update. We entered via the rhythmic strums, psychedelic overtones and wavering vocals. restaurant and the room was full, humming with feasting There’s plenty to enjoy about Tiny Pieces of 8, that’s why I’ve families. But what? Huh? No band in the corner? Music is now seen them 3 times! I was at their first Sherwood gig, when the performed in the Workshop, separate from the restaurant. bar was close by and you could coax them into doing another song with a glass of whiskey. I’ve never experienced live music there. The space is boxy. It tests the traditional Queenstown crowd! You really do have to It wasn’t the same this time. Brett Mills, who’s usually dancing SHUT UP and listen. up the front, was tucked around the corner by the sauna with his hullahoop. The small audience was quietly enjoying the dry, sandy blues from Tom Maxwell until an unwanted instrument joined in... “So, what do you guys think of all this?” one member asked ZZZZZZZZ! Grrr buzzing freezer! Could someone please turn the engaged audience, referring to the space. “That freezer is that off? pretty annoying” “Hey, you got any fish in there?” It kept performing into the next set. “This is a shanty number about the calm seas rising” said Deirdre, lead singer and lyricist. A salty textured intro of guitar pedals, symbol hisses, stricken bass cords and ZZZzzzz!! Together, the band of 5 could easily overpower the freezer.

Audience respect is an ethos Sherwood has tried to drill in to the talky Queenstown crowd. They’ve changed the dynamic which now demands it. FINALLY, the audience is now behaving! So, the least they can do is switch that freezer off during live performances. Right?

Arts+Culture Meet the artist: hip hop dancer Emily Originally from the USA, hip hop artist and dance teacher Emily Keisler is inviting Queenstown locals to give hip hop dancing a try. Working with the Danceworks Queenstown team, which operates out of the Queenstown Performing Arts Centre rooms (corner of Ballarat and Stanley Street), she’s starting the new term with a free taster session for beginners on 17th July. The taster session is an introductory class for absolute beginners, after which there will be weekly classes on a Wednesday evening. Students will learn a complete routine to a song over four weeks. Emily first learned to dance more than 25 years ago. “My Mom put me into a ballet class when I was 7 years old… but to be honest, I didn’t like putting on the tights. So, I started a jazz funk class (as they called it in the early 90s) and I had great fun doing that.” As the genre progressed, it became known as hip hop funk and later, the word ‘funk’ was dropped but the style’s contemporary movements developed. “There’s now so many variations,” says Emily.

Art News Dick Frizzell to judge Arts Gold Awards One of New Zealand’s most treasured contemporary artists will judge Central Otago’s prominent arts award. Dick Frizzell, the artist behind the iconic Four Square Man and the ‘Tiki to Mickey’ series will judge the Arts Gold Awards alongside celebrated director of the Eastern Southland Gallery, Jim Geddes. Entries are open for the 2019 Arts Gold Awards, which has a $13,000 prize pool including $5000 for the Supreme Award. It is open to all New Zealand citizens or permanent residents aged 18 years or older and accepted media ranges from photography to watercolour paintings. Artists are invited to submit their “best works” completed within the past two years and around 50 artists will be selected as finalists. Jim Geddes and Dick Frizzell will then judge the supreme prize winner, a Central Otago artist award for artists living permanently in the region, plus two highly commended awards. There will also be a People’s Choice Award. Entries cost just $30 and close on 1st August 2019; an exhibition of the selected finalists’ work will be held 28th September - 8th November 2019 at the Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery in Alexandra. Find out more on their website (artsgold.co.nz) or email enquiries@centralstories. com for further information.

“There’s popping and locking, there’s crump… hip hop can be done to fast or slow music.” Emily attended competitions across the USA with her school dance team and performed at basketball and football games. Her sports dance team won first place in its division at a national competition and after studying dance and choreography at college, Emily went on to dance for the Texas Stars, entertaining the crowds before big ice hockey games. She also worked with the Austin Spurs basketball team. Emily started teaching in 2013 and has offered dance lessons at Danceworks in Queenstown since February 2019.

What’s Happening

“From an artist’s perspective, dance is the ultimate way I can express who I am. It’s very freeing and it gets my creative mind moving… who doesn’t love to dance? It’s such a primal thing, humans have danced ever since they have known how to create a beat – it is innate in all of us. “I’ve never met anyone who has said that they don’t like to dance, only people who have said they don’t know how to dance.” If you fall into this latter category, try Emily’s free, introductory class next Wednesday (17th July, 7:30pm – 8:30pm). Find out more on Facebook (@DanceworksQT) or Instagram (@dancequeenstown).

12th,13th July 6pm; 14th July 5pm. Dorothy Browns Cinema, Arrowtown. Tickets $27 from dorothybrowns.com

Note that the 7pm show has now sold out. 13th July, 8:40pm – 10pm. Sherwood (554 Frankton Road). Tickets $10 + fees from Eventfinda.co.nz

14th July, 9pm – 11pm. Yonder (14 Church Street) $15 plus fees via Eventfinda.co.nz.

School Holidays are on again and with a little luck we might even get some snow. The LWB has a great colour competition. Pick up a copy on the 16th.

Prize Pack worth over $500!!! With prizes from: Coffee club AJ Hackett Paintball Central KJet Skyline – Gondola Site Trampoline

What to do with the kids at home and especially when there are friends over and the house is full? HERE’S OUR TOP 5 1. Have a Masterchef Competition at home Keep it simple is the key. Things like pizza making. Actually making the pizza from scratch is both fun and easy but importantly inexpensive. BTW you’re the judge. 2. Visit a Park I know it’s basic but its true. Taking the kids to the park is an easy win and as long as everyone is dressed for it, generally children don’t notice the cold as they race around. Queenstown Gardens, Kelvin Heights (Jardine Park), Lakes Hayes Estate McBride Park, Jacks Point and Frankton are all great options.

3. The Gorge Rd Jump Park is fantastic for anyone who loves their bike. It may be busy over the holidays but worth checking out. 4. Go Swimming. I know this isn’t free but it’s still cheap and all kids love to get in the pool. 5. Build a Puppet show. Puppet shows have always been the cornerstone of imaginative play for children and your kids can make a great puppet show at home. Simply using old socks ia great way to start - Spotlight will certainly have plenty of materials if you want to take it that one step further.

Keep an eye out for next weeks Colouring Competition with an epic Prize pack to be won!

Ben Elms has been living in the unusual climate of Central Otago for over 20 years. Some of Ben’s hats include permaculture designed orchards, one on one mentoring, hands-on workshops and the Dr Compost programme. He works alongside community-owned enterprise Wastebusters, which helps residents and tourists recycle effectively. Wastebusters is also helping to move our district towards zero waste, as part of the new QueenstownLakes District waste services contract. Biochar offers us so many positives as a gardener it’s hard to ignore this mind-blowing gardening magic. Biochar is a type of charcoal that has been made at high temperatures – think 300°C plus. The high temperatures and pyrolysis process means it’s a smoke free, nonpolluting burn process… it’s a little bit like the honey combed structure of hokey pokey, or a Crunchie bar.

100% Natural NZ Main Ingredients From NZ Grazed beef and locally caught fish.

Contains NO wheat gluten or chicken. 100% GE FREE. No artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. Low carbon footprint: Local ingredients used, No import costs, No shipping fuel, No fancy packaging.

Free Delivery in QT, Frankton, Arrowtown & Gibbston areas To order call or text 021 376 736 or visit ultimatefeeds.kiwi for info.

A gram of biochar can have the surface area of a mind-boggling 200 square meters! This porous structure, when added to our gardening and farming soils, acts like a sponge to capture and hold moisture and nutrients, allowing plants to use them later. This means less nutrients need to be applied to our soils – it’s like a holiday park for useful bacteria and fungi in the soil, encouraging growth of their numbers. Biochar is a form of carbon that doesn’t break down, it will stay in your soil for hundreds of years, slowly sequestering carbon out of the atmosphere and doing about a million other amazing things for your garden and the environment. Before adding it to the soil, you’ll need to ‘charge’ it with nutrients. You could simply pee into your bucket of biochar, mix it with manure slurry, or put it into your compost heap. You want around 5 – 10% biochar by volume in the soil to have a positive impact on crop yields and plant health. I also mix it into seed-raising mix.

The biochar industry has been slow to get started in New Zealand, but there are a few suppliers online. You can make it yourself using waste wood from pruning, or any other source of untreated timber (even chopped down wilding pines!). There’s a few different production methods; I’m a fan of the old biscuit tin in the home firebox method, but there’s also the earth pit, the steel bath, the ‘Kon tiki’ Kiln, the Oregon Kiln and the Warm Heart Kiln methods. Do some homework and find the best method for you. The Biochar Network New Zealand (bnnz.org) is at the forefront of carbon sequestering technology in New Zealand and has lots of information… go check it out!
