“It does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations, if you live near him.” - J.R.R. Tolkien This, we think, is new and different and very positive. A newly formed charitable trust called the Three Lakes Cultural Trust is developing the district’s first Cultural Master Plan. Anyone who lives or visits here knows the issues caused by unplanned growth and these are increasingly being voiced by the community. The Three Lakes Cultural Trust is concerned with those issues which affect the cultural well-being of all the district’s communities, the provision of cultural resources for them, and very essentially, the diversification of our economy. The big new idea is to have a well-considered and executed district wide plan. It is to help and better enable our communities and any organisations and individuals involved or interested in arts and culture. To do this, we must first gather facts and opinions to establish what we have and what we need and the trust has commissioned the highly regarded AEA Consulting to do this work. This is different. The trust and AEA’s work is independent although it is supported by Council. It is not funded by Council or ratepayers. The Trust is philanthropically funded by residents who are serious about long-term planning in our district. This project is not to compete with any of the very valuable cultural activities or organisations presently at work, but to assist and enable them and to help ensure provision (including funding), is made for arts and culture in the district’s future. The definition of culture is very wide – think LUMA, Michael Hill Violin Competition, Jazz Festival and Festival of Colour. From theatre shows to dance groups, art exhibitions to workshops – we need to know everything this community values or needs. Your views and those of the district’s communities are very much sought. There are two immediate ways we ask you, please, to be in this: complete the short online survey (research.net/r/qldculturesurvey – we understand survey fatigue, but it’s short and important!), and come to one of the Community Voice Meetings. These will take place each evening, Monday 27th May through until Thursday 30th May from 6.30pm – 8pm in Queenstown (QRC), Glenorchy (Camp Glenorchy), Wanaka (Lake Wanaka Centre) and Arrowtown (Athenaeum Hall). Editorial continued on page 8.

SIT continues commitment to excellence The Southern Institute of Technology (SIT), in the face of uncertainty with the Reform on Vocational Education on the horizon, is continuing to keep the bar high for its learners.

a range of global study options. From courses in construction, hospitality, and tourism, to travel and management, students can take their career worldwide with a SIT qualification.

Chief Executive Penny Simmonds said there had been some concern around the future of study of SIT, but the institution had been able to allay those fears.

As Queenstown is a hub for everything tourist related, students taking courses in tourism and travel are particularly spoiled for choice when it comes to work experience with a plethora of hotel chains based in the resort town.

“We’ve been very upfront with students and the reality is we don’t actually know anything yet on what the final reform will look like,” she said. “Once the Education Minister releases the framework for how vocational education will be delivered, that’s when we’ll be able to give students a more concise picture for their study at SIT.”

Established in 2009, SIT’S campus is an exceptional teaching environment with purpose-built spaces, plenty of natural light, magnificent views, ample parking, and easily accessible by public transport.

Any change decided by the Government would likely take a long time to implement so it was business as usual for the next few years, she said.

The institution is well-aware of the housing issues Queenstown faces; to make finding accommodation easier for prospective students, it has an accommodation complex comprised of three and four-bedroom apartment-style living.

Despite this, enrolments have remained steady and SIT continues to live up to its reputation as a centre of excellence as its students and graduates thrive in their chosen professional industries.

Located in close walking distance to the campus, the accommodation is modern and comfortable with Queenstown’s magnificent alpine views providing an inspiring backdrop for study.

Enrolments for Semester 2 starting in July are now open and provide an opportunity for people of all ages to take the first step toward their new career.

The ever-popular SIT2LRN Distance Learning programme continues to offer flexible learning, allowing to students to study from anywhere in the world. SIT2LRN programmes have no tuition fees for domestic students under the SIT Zero Fees Scheme.

I W How

Bikers and cars don’t mix

a mountain biker or skateboarder hasn’t been killed on Brecon Street coming down from Skyline is beyond me. Everyday there are people on bikes and skateboards taking their life in their hands doing wheelies and and whizzing past at breakneck speed and often straight down the steps What’s worse is frequently without helmets. This is crazy stuff with

the amount of traffic and pedestrians in the area. Come on people, knock some sense into yourselves - you are endangering yourselves and if you want to kill yourself go for it, but you will impact others who have to live with the result. Pull your heads in.

A little bit racist

Whinge Page Poll Question Do you agree QLDC should investmore into developing a diversified economy for Queenstown?

Yes 87%

No 13%

Vote Now! www.lwb.co.nz Do you think NZ can make a difference to climate change? Editorial continued from front page.

I went to Avenue Q on Friday and loved it. If you haven’t been, then do yourself a favour and go! One of the songs is ‘everyone a little bit racist’ which got me thinking, are we all in our PC world a little bit racist? . Regardless if its at driver who doesn’t appear to know what they are doing- they are asian, the right winger who still go on about marriage equality rather than say they don’t like gay people, through to employers who inadvertently pay men more than women. These days

are we more afraid of being labeled a racist than admitting what we are? Culture in New Zealand forces us to pretend we are all one big happy family but its actually not true. I know I have in built racism in me and yes it does come out on Queenstown roads and I doubt that it will ever changerather than deny it perhaps we might be better to admit it. Thanks Avenue Q – great song and yes you are right – I am a little bit racist.

Remember Amway This time last year there were thousands of visitors from Amway in town and we hated it. They were here in their hoards but didn’t seems to contribute anything to the local market. Your publication certainly had plenty to say about it. This year there are no big groups to replace it and as a result town is really quiet and my friends are all commenting

on having a real shoulder season for the first time in a couple of years, and negatively with businesses that are not so happy. I’m delighted to have a time where Queenstown is mostly just for locals and town has a more relaxed and less stressful feel. I can even get a park. I’m loving it and would be happy to never have a season like last years again.

Pedestrians – we walk on the left I was taught at a very early age that it is courtesous and protocol to walk on the same side of the pavement as the traffic. In New Zealand we drive on the left side, therefore its expected that we also walk on the left side. However I’m very confused as to why in Queenstown the rule goes out the window and we don’t follow this universal protocol. I maintain the left side while walking on the pavement, hiking running etc yet I am always dodging a stubborn walker who is walking on the

right side! Its worse when oblivious groups take up the whole pavement and don’t have the courtesy to make room for others to get by. Its annoying and causes major crowding on the street. I’ve asked fellow kiwis and Aussies and they all agree. When I visit the United States or Canada we walk on the right side it was the assumed approach. So PLEASE visitors respect the etiquette and walk on the left side. Well travelled.

In these ways, you can help inform AEA, the Trust and the plan and discuss and augment the results of the survey. Over the following weeks AEA will conduct various other community consultations and conversations, then collate this into a factbased “indicative”, (it will present options), cultural plan (expected in Spring this year). Looking after the resident communities and providing a different and better experience for visitors is clearly an idea whose time has come and not a moment too soon. The need to diversify the economy is crucial. We aim to bring together all of these conversations which community groups have been having - some going back a long way. At its heart, this is about long term planning, specifically for the cultural and economic well-being of the district’s communities. A vibrant cultural life is the foundation of a community’s economic and social wellbeing. “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” Antoine de Saint-Exupéry If you have any questions please contact admin@threelakesculturaltrust.co.nz

Facebook / website comments Feedback - last week’s editorial In addition to the sectors mentioned: film, education and knowledge/innovation I would add health/wellness. Otherwise good article pointing out the weakness relying on only a few sectors. Marco

Your Questions Answered Got a community question? Let us know at lwb.co.nz and we’ll find you an answer

Waste & Recycling Credit: Si Williams Soft plastics are a common contaminant for recycling and should go in the rubbish bin.

Rubbish Recycling I have a few issues with recycling. Why did you change the colours? People who are used to blue being recycling now will have to change their thinking. I guarantee you, people will use blue as recycling. How much more is it going to cost to have 3 bins picked up vs 2 bins? Plus the cost of 3rd bin? Would have been cheaper to have sorting from glass from recycling? Since some people are going to put uncleaned glass or lids w/ glass jars etc. So you still have to clean and sort them. Also, cost of patrol and pollution to pick up 3 vs 2 bins? Are we trying to save the environment? I shared my red bins with my neighbour and I never paid for the trash since blue bin is free and never had to use blue bags. Did you think about families sharing trash bins since some houses have 2-3 people living and don’t generate enough trash for a whole bin. This would have saved more money and energy (or too much thinking for you guys?) Just an example in Los Angeles when they expanded their recycling program they needed more trucks and created more pollution than they saved in trash.

QLDC Response Thanks for the opportunity to respond and share information about our new rubbish and recycling collection service. New bins signal a new service and a clear line in the sand that things need to be done differently from 1 July. Back in 2015, WasteMinz, the Glass Packaging Forum and Council’s across New Zealand agreed on some standardised colours to avoid user confusion (red: rubbish, blue: glass, yellow: mixed recyclables) The colours of the new bins are aligned with the agreed colours to support better consistency across New Zealand. It is everyone’s responsibility to think about the waste they produce and take care with the materials they are putting in to the recycling bins. The Council is working hard to educate people on how to use the service to ensure materials have the best possible chance of being recycled. Regarding pollution and collections, we’ve considered that too. What’s really cool about the service is the electric collection truck that has a split body. This means collections can be completed in one hit while keeping the material separated for processing. Who says a truck can’t multi-task! The size of the bin was given careful consideration. The 140L rubbish bin may seem large for many households, especially for those further along the zero waste journey. Many people won’t need to put it out every week, or even every few weeks and that’s okay. That’s where we’d like everyone to be in the longer term. A key priority of the new service is to reduce recycling contamination as much as possible. The 140L rubbish bin will help to avoid rubbish overflow being dumped in the recycling bins. It will also allow for a potential organics collection down the track. If you’ve got any more questions, we’ve provided FAQ’s at www. qldc.govt.nz We’re adding to these regularly so if you have a question that hasn’t been answered, send us an email at services@ qldc.govt.nz we’ll get an answer sorted and published online. Any questions you have just let us know at lwb.co.nz and we will get you an answer.

Community-owned enterprise Wastebusters is helping residents and tourists recycle effectively and moving our district towards zero waste, as part of the new Queenstown Lakes District waste services contract. #3 in a series of articles about waste and recycling We used the think the planet was very big. Big enough to absorb all the stuff we throw “away”. Now we’ve all seen pictures of the turtle with the straw up its nose, dead sea-birds full of plastic and plastic-strewn beaches. Rubbish is permanently harming the planet. We know there is no such place as “away”. That brings new motivation to make zero waste a reality, including here in our district. Council’s vision from the 2018 Waste Minimisation and Management Plan is “towards zero waste and a sustainable district”. There’s also a clear statement in Vision Beyond 2050: “Zero Waste is just something we do around here”. The new waste services contract starting on 1 July comes with an increased focus on education and waste minimisation. Time will be invested in helping residents and tourists recycle effectively. Glass will be collected separately across the district so it can be recycled. But to move towards zero waste, we need to do more than just recycle well. QLDC’s Dr Compost home-composting advice is influential around the country. All our district’s schools participate in the inspiring Enviroschools and zero waste education programmes funded by QLDC. Council is supporting zero waste community education and has set up a new $50,000 contestable fund to support community waste minimisation projects. ‘Save our Stuff’ is the umbrella logo for the new waste services contract. In a landfill, stuff never really goes away because a landfill is not designed for things to break down and disappear. Like a zombie, our stuff lives on after we throw it away. In a good way, if it’s repaired, composted, recycled or upcycled. Or in the landfill or in our oceans if it’s thrown away as rubbish or litter. That’s where the little round guy in the SOS logo comes from. He’s a zero waste zombie - representing the future potential of our stuff. Will it come back as something useful? Or will it linger on for decades or even centuries as discarded rubbish? The story of waste is the flip-side of the story of our stuff. It’s time to rethink how we design, use and throw away stuff so that landfills become the last resort. Gina Dempster,

Communications Manager for Wastebusters

Explore Cromwell’s historic side By Marion Low,

Cromwell & Districts Promotion Group

When the Clyde dam was built, much of Cromwell’s history disappeared under the waters of Lake Dunstan. Luckily, some of the historic buildings were saved and lovingly rebuilt on higher ground. These now form part of the Cromwell Heritage Precinct – a unique glimpse into days gone by. Renshaw’s In its lifetime this cottage went from private residence to ice cream factory to fish processing facility. Renshaw Cottage is now partially demolished, but still provides amazing photo opportunities. Cromwell Free Trade Butchery (Captain Barry’s) Up until 1862 Cromwell only had one butcher, and he charged exorbitant prices for his meat. Then came Captain Jackson Barry who crushed the monopoly by starting the Free Trade Butchery. He succeeded in lowering the price of meat to sixpence per pound and was given a public presentation of a gold watch in appreciation of his services to the community. The butchery continued to operate from this location until 1984 when it moved to the Mall for the formation of the Lake. The building was demolished and reconstructed where it stands today using the original stones. London Stables These stables were originally situated behind London House in the old main street and were probably livery stables for people visiting the town. Livery stables gave travellers somewhere to put their horses and wagons while they were in town buying provisions. London Stables has a unique floor made of small schist rocks laid on their side to provide purchase for the horse’s hooves. Murrell’s Cottage Murrell’s Cottage and the adjoining corrugated iron house are the only two buildings still in their original sites. Built of local schist rock, the stone cottage was the laundry and storage area for the main house.

Lego Show Comes To Cromwell Saturday & Sunday By Ross Lindsay With television’s LEGO Masters demonstrating the unlimited creativity possible with a small plastic brick, any concerns Dunedin based Lego Users Group Otago (LUGO) may have had about bringing this week’s exhibition to Cromwell should have well and truly disappeared. Sponsored by Paper Plus and with proceeds to the Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust, the ‘Central Otago Brick Show’ is in the Harvest Hotel Conference Centre at Cromwell’s The Gate Hospitality and Tourist Centre from 10am – 5pm this Saturday and Sunday, May 25 and 26. LUGO Chairperson, Jacqui Hay, tells us that it won’t be just Dunedin creations on display, but some from Christchurch and several month’s work by Queenstown’s Daniel Mulholland and his four year old son Kobe who have created an epic battle between Antman and his Marvel Comics super heroes and the Dark Side of the Force from Star Wars. Jacqui adds that as well as the displays, kids will be able to make their own LEGO creations from the LEGO and DUPLO play pits as well as decorating LEGO tiles. They can also make their own Minifigures and count all the LEGO crabs in the displays. Kobe (4) and sister Shyla

From Chile To Cromwell And Cooking Up A Storm By Ross Lindsay At just five years old Jo Gacitua grilled his first Angus steak on a traditional Chilean barbecue. As much as he still rates a wellseasoned Angus steak his favourite meal, Jo is passionate about all food. Recently appointed Executive Chief at The Gate Hospitality & Tourist Centre in Cromwell, Jo’s kitchen services both Five Stags Bar & Restaurant and Forage Information Centre. Already taking advantage of locally grown, Jo orders Merino lamb direct from a Cardona Valley farm and eggs from free range hens in Roxburgh. And he says, that’s just the start.

’S FUN, FOOD, CENTRAL OTAGO TERTAINMENT REFRESHMENT, EN ON DESTINATION & ACCOMMODATI Fab

The journey that finally brought Jo to Cromwell started long before he was born when in 1852 his German great grandparents were among 2000 who took advantage of an immigration arrangement to start a new life in Chile. Through political upheavals in Germany and Chile, a key clause that survives to this day is that Chileans related to the original German immigrants can have dual citizenship. At 17 and fluent in both Spanish and German, Jo set off for Germany to complete his education with a degree in journalism at Hamburg University. To make ends meet, Jo worked nights as a dishwasher in the kitchen of a fine dining restaurant where the highly esteemed ‘very German’ head chef talked him into becoming an apprentice chef at the same time as going to university.

Daily 6am–4pm Fab food, barista beverages and the best views in town.

From 11am Fri/Sat/Sun From 2pm Mon- Thurs

After gaining his degree, one thing led to another with Jo deciding journalism wasn’t for him and that he had inherited his parent’s love of hospitality. When he’d completed his apprenticeship, Jo travelled throughout Spain and Europe to explore and better understand local dishes before returning to Chile where he married and had two children. The political situation there saw Jo and his family choose to leave for a new life in New Zealand which he said appealed because of geographic similarity, especially the South Island. Jo arrived in New Zealand in 2007 with his family arriving two years later. Among a number of culinary highlights during his time in New Zealand and before moving to Cromwell were awards and impressing celebrity chef Simon Gault. The first award was largely the consequence of introducing traditional Spanish Tapas to the menu at Casita Miro vineyard restaurant on Waiheke. Auckland’s Metro magazine awarded it Auckland’s best restaurant of the year. Jo’s next award was the result of his reputation taking him to Palmerston North where he was invited to join the New Zealand Chefs Association and not long afterwards his skills, kitchen cleanliness and staff standards was recognised with the Chefs Association naming him the best chef in the Manawatu. Simon Gault came into his life as a customer of a restaurant Jo had been contracted to set up in Orewa north of Auckland. Simon was so impressed he bought the restaurant, although it was after Jo’s contract had run out and he’d taken a break to teach cooking at an international school.

Now remarried, Jo and German wife Nico were on the lookout for opportunities to lead the New Zealand lifestyle and become part of a community when they saw the opportunity to be Executive Chef at The Gate in Cromwell. “We couldn’t be happier,” says Jo. “previous Executive Chef Munish Raja had left a very positive legacy with enthusiastic staff keen to learn, be consistent and do their best to please customers. Together we’ve fine turned the quite meaty and comfort food winter menu and we’re already working on spring.” The Gate General Manager Glen Christiansen says he would describe the winter menu great, hearty kiwi choices. The Gate Hospitality & Tourist Centre’s new, award winning Executive Chef, Jo Gacitua (2nd right) with (l-r) Sous Chef Kasiano Naivaluvea, Demi Chef Joe Bukavesi and Chef de Partie Margaret Jenkins.

COMMUNITY NOTES What’s on?

Baskets of Blessing/Let’s Eat

National Coworking Day 2019 Coworking is still a relatively new concept around the globe. Started in the early 2000’s in California, it has spread around the globe. This growth has been organically driven by a global desire to change our way of working, to support new vocations and employment setups and ultimately turn away from an early twentieth century model of working. Coworking is people working in the same place on their own thing, sharing resources and choosing to be with other people. It’s a new way of working and one that can improve our wellbeing, business success, community growth and our environment. If you’ve never tried coworking or you are new to an area and want to find a coworking space, then National Coworking Day is an event designed just for you and if you’re worried about the cost, then 22 May is your FREE day to try spaces all over New Zealand. You can find out everything you need to know on our national event website: www.nationalcoworkingday.nz When: May 22, 2019 Where: iMeet Queenstown. The Cell Coworking Space, Wanaka

Baskets of Blessing/Let’s Eat! is a Queenstown community volunteer group with ambitious goals and desires above their current resources. They provide practical support and gifts of love for people who are experiencing difficult times by distributing uniquely personalised gift baskets filled with exclusively donated items, as well as providing cooler bags of frozen meal packs and baking.

Pink Ribbon Breakfast This year Remarkables Primary School are hosting a fashion show in partnership with The Hilton, Girl Next Door, Cutting Edge and MINX shoes. Grab a friend and come along to see some lovely new fashion items and hear from Minx director and designer extraordinaire, Cushla (Cush) Reed. Enjoy a glass of bubbles upon arrival, followed by a delicious full breakfast served by some of the wonderful RPS year 7 students. It will be a fun and very sociable morning with lots of laughs, give aways and amazing auctions to raise funds for The Breast Cancer Foundation. Tickets are limited, so book today! Grab your ticket via the eventfinda website. When: 9:30am – 12:00pm, May 26, 2019 Where: Hilton Queentown Resort & Spa Queenstown Schools’ LUMA Lanterns Installation Over 250 primary and high school students from around Queenstown are adding their own special touch to the multi-award-winning LUMA Southern Light Project. It’s the culmination of months of hard work and creative effort on their collaborative installations on the theme ‘Lanterns’ and with sustainability in mind there’s a twist - students all had to use recycled materials. Media students at the high school have also been able to get involved again, introducing an element of sound to the school pieces encouraging people to interact with the artworks by finding soundsensitive buttons to press in conjunction with the light elements. Another ‘first’ for WHS students is the chance to help in the set-up of their works, working on site with technicians to install their creations before the crowds arrive. LUMA Light Festival Trust chairman Duncan Forsyth says the level of involvement from local schools is a key element of community initiatives and engagement, aligning with the Trust’s core values. “These students work so hard each year and we’re as thrilled as they are to see their work literally come to life over the LUMA weekend” he says. When: 5:00 – 10:00pm, May 31 to June 3, 2019 Where: Queenstown Gardens and Waterfront

Let’s Eat receives quality surplus supermarket food supplemented by community donations that their teams then cook into delicious frozen meals. Their mission is to help reduce Queenstown’s surplus food waste, feed people who are needing support (for whatever reason) in times of crisis while simultaneously increasing community nurturing through participation, food and events. They are a passionate group with ambitious goals and desires above their current resources. Real Journeys has chosen the group as the 2019 charity of choice for their Doubtful Sound Cruise-for-aCause. This fundraiser can be a game changer in enabling them to meet the ever increasing demands of those needing support. Please help them share the Cruise-for-a Cause quest among your network of friends, family, work colleagues and neighbours. Their mission is to attract 70 people to book during May or June, on an exclusive overnight cruise to Doubtful Sound on 31 August 2019. Real Journeys are generously donating 100% of this ticket price to this great cause.

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN

Opinion: The Visitor Levy Referendum The proposed visitor levy is not ‘just a pass through’ charge. Research proves that bed taxes cannot be fully shifted to the visitor. Businesses will have to pay whether or not some of the charge can be passed on to customers. It is a sales turnover tax.

The council has not committed to fixing the tax at 5%. It “could come in higher”, we are told. If the tax is applied to one type of business in the District, other businesses could be next. Bed taxes are used overseas, but the council’s proposal is vastly different to overseas models. Most bed taxes are set at very low levels – on average around 80 cents a night per person. No European countries combine high GST rates with high occupancy and border taxes. All European countries that have bed taxes offer reduced GST rates.

The proposal is to take hundreds of millions of dollars off local accommodation businesses and their customers and return it to the council. The council says that most of the funding – $198m – is to be spent on council administration. That’s $198 million that could be spent in local shops.

There are plenty of multi-million-dollar tourism operators in the District. Wayfare Group operates Real Journeys, Go Orange, Cardrona, Canyon Food and Brew, and other bars and restaurants within its portfolio. Skyline Enterprises, Ngai Tahu, NZSki and AJ Hackett Bungy are also major players – direct beneficiaries of tourism and visitor expenditure. We tend to look to these as industry leaders and should ask ourselves why they are not coming forward with an offer to contribute. There are not 34 visitors for each resident here every day. Each day there is an average of 0.6 visitors to 1 resident and there are 1.7 visitors to each resident during peak times. The 34 to 1 ratio is a cumulative total which is irrelevant because infrastructure is built to cope with daily peak loads. This is not the District’s last chance to fund its needs appropriately. There are other funding options: asking big tourism businesses to make a contribution, rebating 5% of the $437m visitors already pay in GST, applying for funding from the $25m Tourism Infrastructure Fund, the $3 billion Provincial Growth Fund and the new $80m international visitor conservation and tourism levy fund, raising debt to 90% of the national norm for councils or issuing bonds. It’s important to get this right and to be fair. The worst option is a skewed approach that is heavily stacked against some businesses which offer great employment opportunities and encourage their clients to go out and spend the bulk of their vacation money on things other than accommodation. Bumper Book and Film Festival The 2019 NZ Mountain Book and Film festival promises more films than ever before, plus a thrilling range of books by Kiwi adventurers.

29th - 30th May Queenstown, $285, tickets limited Details: info@nztraveladventure.com

PHOTOGRAPHY. QT’s Astrophotography Adventure Join Rachel Gillespie and Jordan McInally of Undersoul Photography for a two-night astrophotography adventure where you’ll learn to shoot and edit stunning night-time vistas. You will need your own camera and equipment.

In total, 208 films were submitted in the international adventure film competition, a 16% increase on 2018 and a new record. Entries were received from Finland, Brazil, USA, South Korea, Australia, India, Turkey, Armenia, Europe, Hong Kong and New Zealand; 16 of the films were Kiwi-made. There’s also been a significant increase in the number of environmental films submitted.

DANCE. Beginners Tap Dance Course A five-week tap dancing course for those returning to tap dancing, or giving it a go for the very first time. An intermediate/ advanced course is also being held on Tuesday evenings. Limited numbers.

The standard of books submitted for inclusion has also seen a boost, with Festival Director Mark Sedon saying that the depth and breadth of Kiwi authors in this year’s Mountain Book Competition is “inspiring”. “The quality of films received and level of cinematography continues to rise but we are particularly pleased with the variety and quality of book entries too.” The book competition is judged by adventurers and writers; Allan Uren, Annabel Wilson and Chief judge Dave Vass. Content ranges from polar expeditions to surfing missions, science to scenery, and the ever-popular Kiwi guidebook. Many of the authors, including Bob McKerrow (NZ) will be presenting at the festival alongside the hard-core adventurers like Ben Kozel from Australia.

Tuesday evenings starting 4th June 4/13 Red Oaks, Frankton, $75 for the course, $2 per week to hire tap shoes

Ben Kozel’s uniquely Australian narratives recount epic adventures like rafting down the Amazon from its source high in the Andes, to its mouth on the Atlantic coast of South America. Ben and his two friends survived storms, tropical diseases, local authorities and some of the fiercest white water on the planet. After six months, having travelled 7,000km of the Amazon, they arrived at the Atlantic Ocean. He’s also tackled the first source-to-sea descent of the world’s fifth longest river, the Yenisey, which traverses Mongolia and Siberia into the Arctic Ocean. Ben will talk about both adventures at the festival this July. Bob McKerrow will also be speaking at the festival. The mountaineer, polar adventurer, humanitarian, writer and poet spent 36 years with the Red Cross on humanitarian and disaster relief work. He is recognised as a world leader in disaster recovery. Dunedin-born, Bob was a keen climber in his teenage years and explored the Otago and the greater Southern Alps. He was a member of a New Zealand Andean expedition in 1968 that climbed in the Cordillera Vilcabamba; he climbed 12 peaks, 8 of them first ascents. He’s completed the Coast to Coast three times, has completed a sea kayak double crossing of the Cook Strait and, in an attempt to sea kayak the Tasman Sea with Paul Caffyn, was arrested for not having particular radar equipment. The NZ Mountain and Book Festival is a 10-daycelebration of adventurous sports and lifestyles presented for adventurers, film and book enthusiasts and armchair adventurers. The festival runs in Wanaka from 28thJune to 3rdJuly, Queenstown from 4th– 6thJuly and Cromwell 7thJuly. The full programme will be released when general tickets go on sale on 1stJune at mountainfilm.nz.

What We’re Into Normal People by Sally Rooney Written by 28-year-old Irish author Sally Rooney, ‘Normal People’ exploded on to the literary scene in 2018. It was longlisted for the 2018 Man Booker Prize and last week beat Michele Obama’s autobiography to win top prize at the British Book Awards (aka the Nibbies). Set in Ireland in the 2000s, the novel follows the complex relationship between two teenagers, Connell and Marianne. Connell is handsome, popular and intelligent. Marianne is unpopular and intimidating. Her affluent family employ Connell’s mother as a cleaner. When the pair reach university, Marianne becomes pretty and popular, but Connell struggles to fit in. Still drawn to each other but ever unsure of the strength of their relationship, they must decide how willing they are to save each other.

WRITING. Under Rough Ridge Writers’ Retreat Registrations are now open for the inaugural Under Rough Ridge Writers’ Retreat in the quiet but surprisingly literary village of Oturehua, Central Otago. Tutors include Jillian Sullivan, Brian Turner, Mike Riddell, Paula Wagemaker, Rosemary Riddell, Bridget Musters and Declan Wong.

GIG Review

Rating: That was a waste of time.

Who: Avenue Q Where: Queenstown Memorial Centre When: Thursday 16th May Reviewer: Ch’i Bangs The words theatre can usually divide a room – some people are into it; some find stage singing a little cringey and hard to watch. I normally lean to this side of the divide UNLESS... Unless the show is crass, comical and pushing boundaries in a merry ballad. ‘Book of Mormon’ the 2011 debut musical from the creators of South Park! Raising the middle finger at religion and America. Now, that’s my kind of theatre! The same songwriter (Robert Lopez) wrote for Avenue Q in 2003. The R Rated sesame street stage show where the puppets act like woeful adults. So, when I heard that Showbiz Queenstown was performing this, I jumped and booked a table for opening night. Avenue Q is meant to be relatable on a lot of fronts. That proved to be true. “Plenty of knowledge, have earnt me this useless degree” I’m sure a lot of people can relate to that. The play follows young graduate ‘Princeton’ fresh out of college and in New York. He’s poor, unemployed and scrambling to find a flat, thankfully he finds an affordable room to rent way down in Avenue Q. It’s an American play, so some jokes were missed and kinda wished there was some adaption to make it suit for our setting. One of the characters stars as himself ‘Gary Coleman’ (I had to google him)

He’s a washed-up celebrity who owns a bunch of crummy flats. Sigh! “It sucks to be me, it sucks to be me... is there anybody here it doesn’t suck to be” The human and puppet characters start introducing themselves in this song. There’s Brain and Christmas Eve. Kate Monster who has the hots for Princeton. “Sucka, sucka, sucka, sucka, sucka, sucka, SUCK!” Christmas Eve is Asian. “Everyone’s a little bit racist, it’s truuuuueeee” The cute but destructive Bad Idea Bears “BUY some BEER!” “Yeeeahh buy some BEER” An internet crazed Trekkie Monster “the In-ter-nets for PORN” A dive bar slut, Lucy, with massive... “Yeah their real” Nicky and Rod who are flatmates struggling with their sexuality “If you were gay, that’ll be ok, because now hey, I’d like you annnyyyway” Have I been singing too much? Well that’s very much the show. Small dialogue exchanges but a lot of songs, that said, listen to these songs and they’ll have you in fits. It’s very smart. I doubt that there’ll be another indecent theatre show like this in Queenstown! It’s filthy! it’s fantastic! This is your chance to watch something funny that’s not on the TV screen! Get you tickets... NOW!

I talked during the performance. It was mmmk. Totally worth it. Must See!

The release of the JobFix Job Vacancy numbers confirms what many businesses in Queenstown already know, the market has slowed significantly and finding staff has become a lot easier. Since the start of the year the number of jobs advertised has declined on the same month last year and April continues that trend. The number of open positions dropped 7% year on year and 15% since March, with the number of roles in the visitor sectors declining 10% over last year. Within this the hotel sector itself there was a 30% decline in the number of open roles. The upside for employers is that a significant number of quality candidates are applying for most roles which is a big turnaround since January when finding any candidate was a good outcome. The only sector with an increase in roles available this year is the finance sector but this is based on very small numbers of roles advertised. The early part of May has also been much quieter which bodes well for businesses who will increase staffing numbers across the ski season.
