Is our economy no longer serving the community’s interests? More than half of all employees in the Queenstown Lakes economy are employed in tourism. This industry is the backbone of our economy but having most of our eggs in the tourism basket is neither wise, nor practical. Recent pushback on development at Ladies Mile, debate around the airports’ focus on corporate growth over community impact, and the ongoing conversation around affordable housing and working wages are indicators that residents want something to change. We have reached a critical junction point. Are we destined to be a tourism-only town, or can we diversify our economy with more industries added to the mix before it’s too late? Do we need to double down on a single industry? Will more tourism increase wages, create meaningful career opportunities, or reduce the strain on our housing market? Will more tourism make Queenstown Lakes a better place to live, work, and play? Will more tourism attract the best and brightest to settle here as fulltime residents and contribute to the fabric of our community? Let’s be clear - this isn’t anti-tourism thinking. We have achieved an incredible level of success building a destination with global appeal. As a community we need to discuss whether we want all our eggs in the tourism basket, or do we now prioritise diversification of our economy and spread more of those proverbial eggs around before something cracks? Let’s put the incredible investment that created our destination to work by attracting and stimulating the next industries in our community. We don’t need to replace tourism, just add to and leverage it. Diversification increases our intellectual, cultural, and economic options to make this place a place that our children can thrive in as they grow up. Three promising areas have Council support: film, education, and the knowledge and innovation sector. Ratepayers are investing nearly a billion dollars over ten years on physical infrastructure to deal with where we are today, in anticipation of more of the same. By comparison, we are investing less than 1% of that to diversifying our economy over the same period. Editorial continued on page 8.

P R E PA R I N G YO U R PROPERTY FOR WINTER
Now that Autumn is officially here, it’s time to prepare your home for cold weather. These steps, most of which you can do yourself, may help lower your utility bills and protect your investment. A bit of attention now could save costly repairs and aggravation later.
01 CLEAN YOUR GUTTERS
07 CHECK FOR DRAFTS
You’re so used to your gutters working properly and draining thousands of gallons of water from your roof yearly, that you forget they could use a little TLC. Remove leaves, nests, and debris from gutters and check for leaks or hire a professional to clear your gutters for you. Check out www.taylordgardens.nz for a clearing quote.
It’s important to make sure your property is well insulated and retaining as much heat as possible. Feel for drafts around the edges of windows and doors. A good tip is to use a lighted candle and if the flame flickers, there’s most likely a draft. If necessary, replace seals and consider buying heavier or insulated drapery for especially drafty windows. Ensure your loft has adequate insulation and fit draught excluders which will both keep your house warmer and save you energy.
02 CHECK YOUR CHIMNEY AND FIREPLACE If you have a wood burner fireplace and use it often, have your chimney cleaned and inspected by a professional - and don’t forget to stock up on firewood! Order enough firewood for the season. If you gather your own firewood, make sure it’s dry and readily accessible.
03 GARDEN MAINTENANCE Check for damaged or overhanging heavy tree limbs that may break under heavy snow or that are too close to power lines or the roof. Don’t forget to take down your shade sails and cover or put away your BBQ furniture.
08 CHANGE YOUR FILTERS Another thing in your house that might be costing you more money then it should be. If your filters are clogged, it’s harder to keep your home at the temperature you want it to be which will increase your heating bills.
09 PROGRAMME YOUR THERMOSTAT Check the temperature and timer settings. Setting your thermostat to lower the temperature automatically at night and when you’re not home, can result in substantial savings.
04 LEAF REMOVAL
10 CHANGE YOUR BATTERIES
Rake and remove leaves from the yard. Put into a compost pile if you have one or take to the garden waste disposal.
Once a year you should be checking to make sure all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide devices are working. Since you’re already testing everything else out, you might as well add this on.
05 DRAIN YOUR OUTDOOR FAUCETS Say it with me now: “I will turn off all outdoor faucets before winter!” Drain and disconnect all garden hoses to prevent any water freezing. Not doing this can result in pipes bursting!
06 BRING YOUR OUTDOOR FURNITURE IN Yes, your furniture is outdoor furniture. No, that does not mean you should test the label by leaving it outside through hurricane-like weather and snowstorms. It cost you money and time to set that outdoor space up, so if you want to get another summer season out of it you should store it in a garage or shed.
As your local real estate expert, I am here to help you with any aspect of owning, buying, selling or renting a property. Or perhaps you just fancy a yarn about the market. Either way, please don’t hesitate to call anytime! I’m here for you and at your service. Kind regards,

Recycling changes feedback
So the only real difference (to the new bins) would be the RFID chip? And how many bins are actually being lost to warrant that? There has got to be a number it can’t just be a guess right? Plus how hard would it be to label or even spray paint the existing bins? To me that’s a rubbish excuse and a gigantic waste of existing resources. Coming from something called Wastebusters and Waste Management makes it even worse! So what I want to know is: how can a private citizen raise a public investigation to disclose who was involved in this as well as the financials of the whole deal? I ask because based on the evidence shown so far I’m 100% confident there were some shady deal going under the table to line politicians’ pockets with public money and
I’m sure that can be proven with a investigation. (Edited) Mafia Waste Management. ‘You say [old bins can be] “dropped off at the Frankton transfer station to be recycled.” Can you clarify please how and where they will be recycled?’ Paul. Council’s response: We’re still working through the final details of how and where the bins will be recycled. We’ll share more on this in the coming weeks. In the meantime, if you have questions about how the new service will work, head to www.qldc.govt.nz or phone 441 0499.
♪ Gross Plastic Mountain Scene Bags ♪ The Mountain Scene gets delivered to my house regularly, as it does to all the houses on my street. Every time it is delivered I collect at least 6 other papers wrapped in plastic from various driveways. The papers end up in my recycling bin. Has the Mountain Scene considered the amount of waste in delivering these papers? Particularly the single use plastic waste that comes with each paper, this concerns me the most.
A more sustainable approach would be to deliver the papers without the plastic wrap, or even better, rely on the distribution bins around town where people can collect one one if they want. Do most people not read the Mountain Scene online these days anyway? Please give this some thought, it upsets me every time I walk up my street collecting newspapers (which are often wet anyway despite the plastic) from the driveways of the many holiday homes. Editorial continued from front page. Diversification of our economy is easy to suggest, but hard to achieve. We have a small population, are a long way from key markets, and lack a traditional economic base such as manufacturing or large-scale farming. So, what do we have? Talent! Our district has a wealth of incredibly talented people – who want to be in this place, our prime asset; this is the gold we haven’t mined yet. Attracting and harnessing this talent, in this place, is the key to diversifying our economy. Behind the scenes, the work underway is getting traction. Film Otago Southland is helping boost our film sector. We saw $35 million in production expenditure covering 150 shoots in a single year. The industry employs nearly 200 people, with wages well above average. In turn, a thriving film industry creates tourism demand. Whether it be Lord of the RIngs or the recent production of Wrinkle of Time and Mission Impossible, this work raises the profile of our destination. On the education front, the numbers are even more impressive. Work by Study Queenstown shows $88m was contributed to the local economy in 2018, employing more than 1,000 people. The sector is growing 4 times faster than tourism in Queenstown (48% vs. 12%) and more importantly, these students attract friends and family spending ($480M to NZ in 2018). These students are also part of our workforce, many working 20+ hours per week. The recent launch of Startup Queenstown Lakes is the next promising effort to foster high-growth companies with an innovation, technology, or IP edge. These are the types of companies that are able to export innovation both nationally and internationally. We already have numerous innovative firms working here, many that leverage our tourism expertise, as a landing pad to sell services globally including InTouch, SnoPro, Wherewolf, Chomp, First Table and many others. Creating economic infrastructure that supports entrepreneurs with innovative ideas means that as other industries grow, including film and education, we have a well-paid talent pool activated to create new products and services that can be exported around the globe. Many of our best diversification opportunities will leverage tourism or support it in the future. Our investment in economic infrastructure boosts our destination status, continuing to attract visitors and talent alike to discover all we have to offer - in a more manageable way. Sparking diversification is a long game. If we find more ways to tap into the incredible talent of those who call our district home, while supporting those who join the dots, we can grow an economy that better meets the needs of current and future generations. HURRICANES vs JAGUARES - Fri 17 May, 5:35pm The Jags gave the Highlanders a little hurry up last week but the Canes are starting to look like the team they should be, Championship Winners. REBELS vs BULLS - Fri 17 May, 7:45pm Poor Quade got hurt. That’s might be the end of the Rebels because they have no Plan B. Beating the Bulls at home should be do-able, just.

PICKS OF THE WEEK My Name is Moana Moana tours alongside sister Trina Maniapoto, Paddy Free & Cadzow Cossar... Songs haunt us. They remind us of where we’ve been and hint at where we are going... a bit like Ocean or Moana, that mysterious watery highway that connects our Pacific Islands and our people. ‘My Name is Moana’ is an intimate 90-minute tribute to the ocean led by singer/songwriter Moana. This show celebrates our relationship as New Zealanders to the Ocean through a mixture of music, myth and personal anecdote. An intimate, uplifting and often humorous experience. Otago Documentary to Premiere at International Festival A documentary about arts-loving Central Otago communities will have its world premiere at an international documentary film festival next month. ‘Central to the Soul’ will appear as part of the 14th Doc Edge Festival, an Oscar-qualifying festival held annually in Auckland and Wellington. The documentary was created by filmmaker and feature writer Bill Morris, whose previous work has appeared on TVNZ (‘Our Big Blue Backyard’ 2015–16) and he’s worked with the Natural History New Zealand Unit (NHNZ). Bill Morris’ biopic of singer-songwriter Donna Dean, ‘The Sound of Her Guitar’, was among the award winners at Doc Edge in 2016. In ‘Central to the Soul’, Bill explores the communities of Central Otago, as they gather to enjoy performances at venues in the Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes district. Filmed throughout 2018, it’s an exploration of a side of this region that’s not often shown. Described as ‘so much more than a music film’, it explores the importance of community and how locals have adapted to the major social, political and geographical changes of the past 50 years – from the damming of the Clutha river, to the influx of viticulture, dairy farming, mass tourism and investment homebuying. The film includes performances from Adam McGrath in Arrowtown, Hopetoun Brown in Tarras Hall, Helen Webby in Bannockburn and Michael Hurst in Roxburgh.

FAIR. Trash n’ Treasure A fun family-orientated fair with a sausage sizzle, books, ski gear and gear for tots to teens. Hosted by the good people at Arrowtown Plunket.
An AOTNZ performer says, “I used to turn up in towns thinking I was the most important thing happening that night. I came to realise I was just a focal point for something much more important – the chance for a community to gather.” The project was made via the Arts On Tour NZ project, with the support of Central Lakes Trust and Otago Community Trust. Central Lakes Trust Chief Executive, Susan Finlay says the Arts on Tour programme provides “increased awareness of the arts in small communities and the opportunity to have diverse performers in the local area.” “[‘Central to the Soul’] is a real snapshot of our cultural heritage, and showcases the present cultural health and wellbeing of our communities in rural New Zealand.” The Doc Edge Festival runs 30th May – 9th June (Auckland) and 13th 23rd June (Wellington), find out more information at docedge.nz.

Art News Wonky Donkey Author Wins Tui Award Queenstown Lakes based musician and children’s book writer Craig Smith has won a Tui Award for ‘Not Just for Kids 2’, the second album in his series of fun songs for kids (and kids at heart). Craig was the Recorded Music NZ Best Children’s Artist winner, with another Queenstown Lakes based artist, Anna van Riel, a nominee. Craig is known for his bestselling book, ‘The Wonky Donkey’, which saw surge in world-wide popularity last year after a video of a Scottish grandmother reading the book went viral online. He is a twotime APRA Best Children’s Song Award winner, two-time ISC finalist (children’s section) and NZ Post children’s book award winner (children’s choice).

This fellowship will go by the name of Queenstown Bible Baptist Church. The venue will initially be the St John Ambulance rooms on Douglas Street in Frankton. Pastor Jeff Williams and his wife Debby will begin by holding weekly Sunday evening services at 5:30pm. The church will hold traditional services, using the Bible as the foundation for all instruction and practice. Who are Jeff and Debby? With more than thirty years of ministry, the Williams have started several churches on the South Island in Dunedin, Blenheim, Reefton and Timaru. Each congregation is a growing and active part of their community. Pastor Jeff created a free Bible Correspondence School in 1992 which has reached into homes and communities up and down the country. This ministry has seen many people transformed by the Word of God, touching all walks of life, from church members to prisoners. In 2001 Pastor Jeff started a Bible institute in Blenheim to prepare people interested in Christian ministry. This has led to several pastors currently ministering in New Zealand and a number of missionaries serving in foreign countries. These trained ministers provide compassionate aid and support to people who otherwise have little hope. The Biblical pattern of training others to reach out with the gospel is a foundational part of Christ’s teaching and the Williams’ ministry. Do you have sincere Bible questions? Pastor Jeff holds a PhD in Biblical studies and is ready to spend time giving Scriptural answers to today’s difficult questions. Jeff works faithfully to help others understand and have confidence in a new life with Christ founded upon Bible based answers. The view for the future of this new church is to reach individuals and families with the amazing good news of God’s saving grace and to grow a dynamic, community-oriented, Biblical church family. Jeff & Debby are committed to serving faithfully in Queenstown to see this new church established and would love to meet you. All visitors are more than welcome to attend services and if you have time, stay for a cuppa afterwards!

Wastebusters job as part of the new waste services contract is to help residents and tourists know how to recycle effectively, and to move our district towards zero waste. #2 in a series of articles about waste and recycling The new rubbish and recycling service is starting on 1 July, and you’ll be asked to keep contamination out of your recycling. What even is contamination? It’s jargon for anything that isn’t supposed to be in that recycling bin. A lot of contamination comes from people “wish-cycling”. We like the idea that something will be recycled, so we put it in the recycling bin and hope for the best. There’s also a lot of contamination which go far beyond the realms of “wish-recycling” into the darker side of “not really giving a sh**.” At Wastebusters we’ve found dead fish, sex toys and frying pans in our recycling, not to mention dirty nappies and coffee cups. That’s pretty gross for the recycling crews, and it also affects the recyclability of the material. With China’s National Sword programme drastically reducing imports of recycling into China, there’s a global drive to improve the quality of recycling. That means reducing contamination to much lower levels. Some of that is being done through better collection and sorting, but we also need to take more care with the recycling we put out at the kerbside. Food is a contaminant, so give any dirty cans or bottles a rinse or quick scrub. Liquids make paper and cardboard soggy, so empty any bottles before you put them in the recycling. Have a look at the stickers inside your new wheelie bins to make sure you know what should go in each bin. The most confusing items for people are coffee cups and tetrapaks (like soy milk cartons). Both go in the rubbish because they contain plastic as well as cardboard and so are a contaminant for cardboard recycling. Soft plastics (like cheese wrappers) have no viable recycling markets at present and also get tangled in the recycling sorting machinery, so the only option for them right now is to put them in your rubbish bin. Glass recycling is easy to get right, because only glass bottles and jars go in the glass recycling bin. A good rule of thumb is, if in doubt, leave it out of the recycling bin.

Q+A
LWB talks to Harry Hume about taking action to raise awareness of mental health in Queenstown.
You are holding a charity event at Barmuda this Sunday the 19th, why is mental health so important to you? As a team, we all have our own stories some of which are personal and some of us have lost loved ones. It’s only once you crack the ice and talk to people about mental health that you realise how common it is and how it affects everyone in one way or another. Mental health is universal and it’s important that we all look after each other. How did the idea come about? One of our team was in the planning process of holding an event similar back at their home in the UK. However, with their plans to move to NZ being so close they had to drop the event. Now being here in Queenstown long enough to have met the right people, it seems more than fitting to reopen the plans and hold the event here. What’s your main focus on holding such an event? To raise awareness of mental health and to help fund charities that heavily rely on donations. We want the public to acknowledge how common mental health issues are among all of us. It’s our focus that everyone knows where to get the help and support they need if they are struggling. It’s about time we get talking and lift the “TABOO” surrounding mental health. If at least one person leaves Taboo finding an outlet they can turn to for help, then the event will have been well and truly worth it. By coming down to support it what can I expect? A good old fashioned party from day to night, all for a good cause! We have live music from two bands performing in the afternoon along side barmuda’s famous ping pong tournament and an epic list of 7 local DJ’s all pulling together for the cause! How are you raising donations? Entry on the night is a minimum $10 cash donation. 100% of which goes to the charities we are representing, this includes entry into our raffle with incredible prizes provided by supporting businesses here in Queenstown. We have intentionally kept the entry price low, in the hope that peoples generosity will reflect in donation buckets around the venue. Are their particular charities you will channel the money towards? Yes, we are proud to be supporting two charities. Half what we raise is being split 50/50 between an NZ based charity and a UK based charity. Lifeline Aoeteroa provides a free call helpline or text service with professional counsellors trained in every aspect of mental health. The counsellors are there to listen and help those in need. It costs them $25 to answer each phone call, so community fundraising like Taboo is vital to keep that service accessible.
