LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN BULLETIN

Aotearoa stands together. Like everyone in New Zealand, I was horrified by the events in Christchurch last Friday. It was undoubtedly one of Aotearoa’s darkest days. In today’s world of instant communication and round-the-clock news, we’re used to seeing and hearing about horrible acts of violence overseas. And while intellectually, we all know that nowhere is immune to the black stain of terrorism, I, probably like you, had convinced myself that we were safe. Tucked away at the bottom of the world with a small, socially progressive population, I felt like we were unlikely to ever experience the horror of mass murder on this scale. I was so wrong. New Zealand is never going to be the same again. We are now unfortunately part of a group of countries where mass murder by extremist groups has smashed our innocence. Like Australia after the Port Arthur massacre, our leaders will obviously tackle our gun laws with updated legislation and I’m sure the ease of flying throughout NZ is also going to change. We are all going to be on guard and on edge for a long while. Condolences from world leaders and people around the world who have been in this situation before us, are very welcome. For Kiwis in Australia, I’m sure that the Sydney Opera House sails projecting the silver fern in solidarity with NZ would have been both heart-wrenching and poignant. On a personal level, I’ve been reminded of how wonderful my friends are. I’m sure you too heard from many friends overseas who just wanted to reach out and say they were thinking of us and wanted to check in and let us know of their love. That said, none of that helps at this moment as I try come to grips with the enormity of last Friday. I also feel for Christchurch, just getting back on its feet and now dealing with a tragedy of this magnitude. I suppose if there is ever a positive that comes from these events, it does bind us closer together as we reach out to those affected. The love and support for Muslims around the country has been palpable and it is heartening to see that when a killer strove to instill fear and drive division, we have responded with an outpouring of love and unity. I cannot begin to imagine the pain those who were directly affected are now going through. As we go to print, there will be candlelit vigils held in Wanaka and Queenstown; this is an opportunity for us all to stand with the Muslim community in Christchurch and with all of New Zealand, to express our grief and to say that we will not let hate change the fabric of our warm and welcoming community. David Gibbs Commercial and Operations Manager Lakes Weekly Bulletin If you feel you need to talk further. 1737, Need to talk? is New Zealand’d national mental health helpline. You can call or text 1737 at any time to talk to a trained counsellor. If you wish to donate to the families of the Christchurch Mass Shooting, all the money raised will go towards helping the families directly affected. www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/christchurch-shooting-victims-fund

Dating

Let’s catch up (but actually not) I’ve lost count of how many times I was about to start writing this. I’ve thought, chill out, this happens, move on, he’s just not into you, it’s not meant to be blah blah blah… But enough is enough. Guys, honestly, what in the name of heartbreaks made you think that it’s okay to throw around phrases like “It was so nice to see you!” and “Let’s catch up again very soon!” only to then not act upon it. Worse, most of you keep the occasional message coming and instead of showing an obvious lack of interest by simply no communication at all (which would be nice and clear, thanks), you make sure to randomly pop back into our minds by sending a little “How’s things?” or “What’s happening?”. This is followed by a new start of the let’s-catch-up cycle which normally ends in silence, until it’s time for your next “Heyyy!”.

Dating is hard enough already, why do you have to make it even more complicated? I’m not a there’s-only-black-and-white person, but when it comes to dating I strongly believe that it’s fair and pretty straight forward to show the right signs. Not to mention, to make a decision to start with. Do I actually want to spend time with this person? Surely, that’s an easy enough question to answer. Yes? Then make an effort, make it happen. No? Just say no, it’s that simple (and definitely do not suggest a catch-up in the first place). I have yet to figure out if this is a problem of generations (the world’s your oyster and there’s plenty of fish to catch - yes, of course you can have them all!) or a local demeanour (Queenstown is the town of Peter Pans after all - I mean, who wants to grow up when you can keep getting wasted instead?). Or, who knows, it might be me. #stillsingle Anonymous

Dirty Thieving Dogs What on earth is happening to Queenstown!? In the past couple of weeks the number of scumbags stealing tools and items from retail stores is disgusting. Do you not think they have CCTV? Do you not think that we will go to the police? Do you really think you can get away with it!? Like come on... you really

have to be that desperate to steal without thinking about the concequences. I wonder how many businesses have been hit with this in the past month, I personally know of 6 local businesses! What are we as a community going to do about this!? Concerned Shopkeeper

Do you support a visitor levy being applied to visitors to help pay for infrastructure? Yes 58%

No 41%

Vote Now! www.lwb.co.nz Is Autumn your favorite season?

Facebook/Website Comments Editorial - 691 I agree with a visitor levy IF it is to bring the infrastructure to a state that can support the current number of visitors, or fewer, but NOT if it is the wedge to further increase numbers of visitors. A levy can not mitigate many of the antisocial impacts of very large numbers of visitors, which we are all now experiencing. Jane Shearer Editorial - 691 So let me get this straight: tourists already spend a ludicrous amount of money with accommodation (if you think it’s expensive for locals imagine how abusive it is for tourists) they spend heaps with local tours, booze, rental cars and so on and now they’ll have to pay an ‘entrance fee’ as well? If I were a tourist I would take my business elsewhere and spread the news that other places are just as beautiful and at costs of a fraction than it does here. And once things get really scarce I would like to see what will happen to local business and all those new buildings that are being built all over the place... Point being: there is over a billion dollars coming to Queenstown every year, where is this money going to? Because wages haven’t increased and me or my friends are not getting rich on the other hand new businesses are opening every now and then, some are expanding... So how about increasing businesses’ taxes and make it proportional to their earnings instead of charging an ‘entrance fee’? Anonymous

The Great Migration South

School Holidays Feature Out on April 9th & 16th in the Lakes Weekly Bulletin.

by Sarah Grenham

As all residents, visitors and new comers to the bustling town of Queenstown understand, finding accommodation here is one of the most challenging parts of arriving. With bags big enough to rival the surrounding mountains strapped to their backs and extra luggage hanging off every available limb, seasoned backpackers can often be spotted staggering from one hostel to the next, searching in vain to find one with a spare bed available. (“You MUST book ahead!” The residents of Queenstown cry in anguish, shaking their head at the clueless newbies). Once a space to finally rest their weary heads has been secured (and at the bargain price of $40+ a night), the next stage of the great migration south can begin – the act of joining every single social media page with the words ‘Queenstown’ and ‘accommodation’ in the title, and hounding it day and night, waiting for the sacred notification that a spare room is available (often at prices that will make you flinch, bills not included and a very loose use of the term: ‘ten minutes’ walk to town’).

QUEENSTOWN

To book, contact your account manager today.

To learn more contact your account manager today or give us a call on 03 409 2800.

And then the real fun begins. There is a real delicate art to house hunting; depending on the size of the house and the chattiness of its occupants, you have around seven minutes to make yourself appear a presentable, funny, cool, clean, quiet, organised, respectful and fun individual, all whilst trying to scope out your new potential flatmates, strike the correct balance between chatty, but not overbearing, ask probing questions about the house and work out if this is a place you could picture yourself living in for the foreseeable future. It feels strangely like a job interview as you stumble over your words to defend your lack of a job and your cheeks ache from the huge smile you’ve plastered across your face – but when you get the message that you’ve got the room, the memory of all the angst seems to all fade away. You unpack your clothes while you gaze at your new majestic view of the mountains and the backpack that once cut permanent grooves into your shoulders becomes a distant memory, tucked safely away under your bed. You start to establish your own ‘local’ spots in Queenstown and it feels in the blink of an eye you are sat outside your favourite café, cashing in on your locals’ discount and you spot a helpless new comer, staggering from one hostel to the next. And then you, a now seasoned resident of Queenstown, shake your head at the clueless newbie and cry in anguish, ‘‘You MUST book ahead!”

A Weekend Road Trip For Aspiring Entrepreneurs by James Burnes A global event giving participants a taste of the entrepreneur journey is taking place in Dunedin 5 to 7 April. Organizers at Startup Queenstown Lakes are filling a van with aspiring founders, code crunching developers, and creative locals to take part. Startup Weekend takes place over 54-hours and challenges participants to launch a business over a weekend. Events take place throughout the world, with the next New Zealand event hosted at Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin. Last year Startup Queenstown Lakes took 5 locals on a road trip to Dunedin. Chris Barnhart, the marketing manager at restaurant Yonder and World Bar, was among the locals in the van. Barnhart wasn’t sure what to expect. On Friday evening participants can pitch a business idea or problem to solve. About half did, including Barnhart. “After the pitches, teams self-organised teams around their favorite idea and got to work. Mentors provided feedback and helped teams hone their business model,” he said. “In just over two days we went from a rough idea to a solid pitch that customers or investors would be impressed to hear.” The programme culminated in a pitch competition before a panel of judges on Sunday evening. Teams demonstrate how far they got validating their idea. Many have built prototypes or even secured a few early customers. Barnhart and his teammates ‘launched’ a gin distillery that up-cycled discarded fruits from local orchards. Their 5-minute pitch included a brief slide deck, a sample cocktail, and mock-up packaging. The team won the competition. “This experience is really about learning how to fail fast, iterate smartly, validate ideas quickly, and tell a strong and concise story about your new product or service,” said James Burnes, CEO of Startup Queenstown Lakes. “These are vital skills for any professional, not just entrepreneurs.”

“To be honest, it was my favorite thing I did last year. It challenged my skills in leadership, team work, and being creative under tight deadlines” Barnhart said. He intends to go again this year. Burnes noted no previous business experience is required and that attendees come from a diverse background of experiences. “There is a huge mixed of attendees at these events, many of whom have never started or ran a company,” he said. “There are few more effective ways to get a taste of entrepreneurship in such a direct, real-world way.” Individuals or companies interested in participating in the Startup Weekend Dunedin Road Trip should buy their event ticket now. The $99 ticket includes all meals during the event. Individuals are responsible for their own housing. Startup Queenstown Lakes is offering free transport courtesy of Go Orange for all district participants and is assisting with sorting rooms. The van departs Queenstown CBD at 12:30pm on Friday, 5 April and will return late on Sunday, 7 April. If you have questions, contact roadtrip@entrepreneurship.co.nz or visit the events page on the Startup Queenstown Lakes website at www.entrepreneuzhip.co.nz/events/

Queen Of Boogie Piano

Saturday 23rd March, 2 - 3pm Sherwood, 554 Frankton Road Free event

Queen of boogie piano comes to Queenstown Jan Preston is known as Australia’s Queen of boogie piano. But the incredible piano player and signer is in fact a born and bred New Zealander. She grew up in Greymouth on the West Coast where her family and others from the local community would regularly get together to play music. Jan says her love of boogie-woogie piano and ragtime music began when she came across an old ragtime record.

Wednesday 27th March, 5:15 - 8:30pm Reading Cinema, Queenstown Tickets $30, includes popcorn and wine

“A 78 [rpm] Winifred Atwell record of ‘The Black and White Rag’ was the first piece of not-classical piano music I’d heard. I just loved it – but nobody could show me how to play it. I came back to the style many years later, it’s always turned me on!”

These days, she writes music for TV and film (including for her sister, celebrated filmmaker Dame Gaylene Preston), as well as touring with her trio. Jan’s latest tour, 88 Pianos I Have Known features projected images, biographical stories and of course, Jan’s distinctive original music.

FILM. Boy Erased (R15) Boy Erased is the true story of one young man’s struggle to find himself while being forced to question every aspect of his identity. This exclusive showing is a fundraiser for OUTline, Rainbow Youth and Diverse Church.

COMEDY. Sajeela Kershi Fights Like a Girl Multi-cultural comedy from multi-award winning comedian and writer Sajeela Kershi. Talking about Trump, terrorists and everything in between, Sajeela calls out the bull****.

“Back then, if you learned piano, you learned classical music. I love classical music and I still write for films and play some in my shows.

Jan went on to study piano seriously, completing her grades and a five-year classical piano degree at Auckland University. Not content to become a concert pianist or a piano teacher, Jan co-founded Coup D’Etat, which had a No. 1 hit with the song Doctor I Like Your Medicine in 1980. She then jumped the ditch to live in Sydney and became known as the Queen of Boogie-woogie piano.

LITERATURE. Roderick and the Wizard of Endor book The launch of author F. M. McQueen’s new fantasy book for children, illustrated by Emma-Kate Moore. Aimed at 7 – 13-year-olds with active imaginations. Parents and children are welcome at this event; nibbles are provided and the book will be on sale.

Wednesday 27th March, 7 - 8pm Sherwood, 554 Frankton Road Secure a seat for $2 + fees from eventfinda.com

What We’re Into

“As far as I can remember, I have never, ever played in Queenstown, even though I’ve toured New Zealand for many years. I’m very, very excited!” Jan says. “There’s lots of new material, which will take you from tears to laughter (I like to take my audiences on a journey). Boogie piano is uplifting and fun, so be prepared to feel great, to be uplifted and entertained. I can assure you it will not be boring!” Find out more about Jan, check out janpreston.com or pop over to Eventfinda.com to get tickets for the show: $24 (+ fees), Wednesday 20th March, 7pm, Queenstown Memorial Centre. Creative Queenstown will be operating a cash bar on the evening, with all proceeds going to charity.

Muggle Quidditch Quidditch New Zealand are looking for dedicated athletes to represent New Zealand in the nation’s second bid for the Quidditch World Cup. The magical sport, which features in J.K. Rowling’s fictional Harry Potter books, sees witches and wizards take to the skies on broomsticks in a full-contact ball game. The muggle (non-magical) version is a mix of rugby, dodgeball and tag; the snitch – a tiny, flying golden ball in the magical version – is a person with a tennis ball in the muggle version. Players run around with ‘broomsticks’ between their legs as they attempt to score points with the quaffle ball, dodge the bludgers and catch the snitch. Harry Potter fans brought the fictional game to life in the USA in 2005; it’s now played in more than 40 countries. The New Zealand team made its debut in 2018, competing against 28 national teams in Florence, Italy. It’s the first time New Zealand has competed at an international level in a full-contact, mixed-gender sport. Fancy yourself as a Quidditch player? Queenstown has its challenges. There are homeless and socially isolated people who need a place where they can feel welcomed and accepted. There are struggling working families who need access to affordable clothing and need to know what support is available to them. There are people who find themselves in a difficult or unexpected situation and come to us to find out where they can go for help. Operating hours are weekdays Mon 10am – 4pm, Tuesday – Friday 9am – 4pm. Come and check out the facilities and find out what activities are happening here! They work with other organisations on issues affecting our community and together find solutions. They have relationships with social services/ organisations so that they know what is available for their clients and can work together to assist them. They keep up to date with community issues and provide feedback to get traction with solutions. They are flexible, and don’t have the red tape of other organisations, so they can respond quickly by either referring or advocating on behalf of a client. In order to operate, they rely heavily on the support of our local community and funding organisations. They are very grateful to the individuals, businesses and our QLDC who support us financially with donations, goods and services. Thank you to all our lovely supporters! Happiness House believe we live in a caring supportive community and together can look after each other.

BANNOCKBURN

4 Easter eggs to find in Cromwell By Marion Low, Cromwell & Districts Promotion Group

Cromwell has more to offer than meets the eye. It has plenty of hidden treasures just waiting to be discovered by those who are willing to look. Bannockburn Sluicings Slip on your trainers and take a hike on the Bannockburn Sluicings trial. This 3.5 km loop snakes through a landscape that reminds of the Grand Canyon and offers a unique insight into the mining activities that shaped both the landscape and the region. BBQ spots mwell has two spots by the lake where you can grill a sausage or two. The first one is in Alpha Street Park, and the second one is located at the edge of the Heritage Precinct. Picnic in Lowburn Just outside of town lies the beautiful settlement of Lowburn. At the entrance, you will find a grassy bank where you can enjoy a quiet picnic, and take a splash in the sheltered water of the inlet. 45th Parallel An initial steep climb will be well-rewarded with amazing panoramic views over Lake Dunstan and the Cromwell Basin. There are two access points to this route; one just past the Lowburn Inlet on SH6, and the other via Clark road.

Close to 100 entries for speedway racing this Friday and Saturday Long-time Cromwell locals say his funeral was the towns largest and now the speedway meeting this Friday and Saturday at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway to honour immediate past-present Daryl Ainsley will be one of the track’s biggest with close to 100 entries. A further measure of the high regard in which Daryl is held, drivers are coming from all over the South Island, many of them amongst the country’s best for their class. Central Motor Speedway promoter Jason Scott says he is hoping that the many who knew Daryl through sports he was passionate about before discovering the thrills and spills of speedway will come along on Friday and Saturday to not just watch the racing action but to also mix and mingle in the clubrooms afterwards. “It could be said Daryl was a man of three sports. In his 20’s it was rugby where he was a skilled halfback for Cromwell. Then in his 30’s, ‘Mr 110 percent’ focussed on multi-sport competing in three Coast-to-Coast races and in his 40’s caught the speedway bug in a big way,’ says Jason. “Those were his big passions but he also played rugby league and squash, got into chess and will long be remembered as DJ Dazza. In business, all credit to him for going from the hand piece in his early 20’s to building Ainsley Shearing, formerly owned by his late father, into one of the South’s most successful. He was also a dedicated father, son and brother. “During his nine years at Central Motor Speedway, Daryl made a huge impact, and it wasn’t just his driving. He joined the committee and then in 2015 was elected club president. After sorting his shearing gangs, most days of the week Daryl could be found at the track on mower with his mobile up to his ear. He also ran PD boys on Saturday mornings and shortly before his death, put 110 percent into installing an irrigation system. Daryl’s quiet but firm manner helped secure the club’s track lease until 2025. At the time of his death Daryl was leading the charge for going forward from there. “As a club we haven’t done a lot of talking about a key reason for having the Daryl Ainsley Memorial Meeting. As much as it’s a last farewell to Daryl, it’s to start generating funds for a permanent memorial to him and also the speedway’s builder, Ron Spriggs. Part of this fund raising will be commemorative t-shirts and wrist bands and a percentage taken from the gate taking. In their early 50’s, both men were taken far too soon. Daryl by a single car accident near the family crib at Tautuku in the Catlins and Ron Spriggs by terminal illness.” Understandably we’d love to see a huge crowd for one of the tracks biggest ever turnout of super saloons – the class Daryl raced under the Mad Maori Racing banner, saloons, sprintcars, six shooters, youth ministocks and productions. Both days’ gates open for trackside parking with racing starting at 6pm. We’ve also got lots of off-track attractions including a burnout, ‘Noise Complaint’ band on Saturday, kids lolly scramble and food concessions.” By Ross Lindsay

Located deep in the heart of Central Otago in the valley of Upper Clutha, Cromwell is a special place.

In a statement from Loop Recordings, Media contact, Dan Clint said, ‘Fly My Pretties are beyond excited to announce the incredible cast for a special Easter weekend performance in Gibbston Valley. The set will run through the entire Fly My Pretties back catalogue and Queenstowners will be treated to some classics that are being performed live for the first time in years. Headlining the festival is New Zealand music stalwart, Dave Dobbyn; A musician that has had top 10 hits during every one of the last four decades so grab your ticket and get your sing-a-long voice ready because you will know all of the songs. ‘We booked Dave Dobbyn because he is an iconic New Zealand musician who appeals to a wide range of people, says Bryce Wrigley, one-third of the team behind the inaugural festival. No strangers to Queenstown’s event market, Bryce and Zahra have teamed up with Clayton Spence and been selling out Queenstown clubs with Australasia’s biggest Drum n Bass acts for years; ‘Drum and Bass is a niche market’, says Bryce, ‘and I’ve always wanted to put on an outdoor event but I wanted it to be inclusive of everyone in our community’. ‘Yeah, we wanted to have something for everyone’, adds Zahra, so, ‘Through the Valley’ will include everything from a ‘kid zone’ with games for the little ones (kids under 11 get free entry to the event), to a full-service (waiters and all) VIP tent for the grown-ups. ‘There’s a lot more involved in the set up for a festival’, says Bryce, it’s harder to coordinate all the moving pieces’. ‘But everyone involved has been so supportive’, adds Zarha, ‘there’s definitely a palpable love for it [the festival]. You get to know everyone from the waste management team to the food vendors really personally, all our partners have been so helpful and there’s a real sense that everyone is really keen to see the event succeed and grow’. Also on the line-up, emerging Christchurch talent, the Butlers. Incidentally, they released their first album this week, so give them a google and have a listen. And no strangers to the Queenstown market, Rhythmonyx and Foz (DJ set). FULL FLY PRETTIES CAST: Barnaby Weir, A Girl Named Mo, Anna Coddington, Bailey Wiley, Hollie Smith, Lisa Tomlins, Ria Hall, Age Pryor, Iraia Whakamoe (The Nudge), James Coyle (The Nudge), Jarney Murphy (The Black Seeds), Laughton Kora, Mike Fabulous (Lord Echo), Nigel Patterson (The Black Seeds), & Ryan Prebble (The Nudge)

Drug Testing Technician Queenstown/Central Otago The Drug Detection Agency (TDDA) is the largest provider of workplace drug testing services in New Zealand, performing health and safety focused collection and screening of urine, oral fluid and hair samples from workforce personnel. No formal qualifications are required from applicants as full training and assessment in required NZ standards will be completed before the commencement of work. The required qualification is completed in a four day course run by TDDA held in Auckland 1821 March. The main requirement of this position is the collection of samples to detect the presence of illicit and prescription drugs. The applicant must be honest, reliable and not afraid of hard work and sometimes long hours. The hours change on a daily basis due to testing requirements so we cannot provide a set start or finish time each day - weekly hours vary between 18-30 hours. The position is part time, and there is a requirement to be on call every second week. All work is carried out either in our Queenstown office or on site in our fully equipped mobile van. A full Driver Licence is essential as the applicant will be required to drive a manual van.

The number of open roles advertised in February declined 8% year-on-year and dropped 4.5% from January. This is the second month in a row where the number of positions advertised was behind the prior year and the first time in over twelve months when declines for two consecutive months have been recorded.

JOB ADS Total Jobs Advertsied

While the total number of open roles declined in January by 4.5%, this was better than the previous year where the seasonal decline was over 11%. However, it’s not all doom and gloom, as the market remains very healthy with a total of 738 positions available in February and a slower decrease than we saw in 2018.

By Sector Construction Utili ties and Transport Finance R/E and Admin Government

Each year, February sees the 'Summer Seasonal Fluctuation' kick in as the holiday season winds down. February numbers show that businesses, especially in the F&B, Accommodation, Tourism, Travel and Retail sectors, are either adjusting to a lower number of candidates being available or doing a much better job this year of retaining employees! All of these categories saw double-digit declines in jobs advertised during February both compared with Feb 2018 and last month.

AirNZ has reported a slow-down in tourism growth, and the local job market may also be reflecting a drop in visitor numbers to Queenstown. The Construction sector led the way in growing the number of jobs advertised with demand for skilled candidates growing by a sizeable 30% from the January period and in-line with last year. Overall there were no major changes in category ranking for job roles, even with the drop in F&B / Accommodation openings as they represented 68% of all roles advertised. Summary • Total open roles advertised in February declined 8% on Feb 2018 • Tourism-related categories all fell in excess of 10% • Both January and February have recorded declines in job numbers for the first time in over 12 months
