Keeping Our Community Safe. As the busy summer period tapers off, local police are reflecting on what was a busy time for the district, and looking to the future. The New Year’s period went off relatively well and the levels of violence and disorder that are associated with celebrations in some parts of the country were not seen here. In part, this is a reflection of the good cooperation between local agencies and organisers. It’s also testament to the nature of the community we live in. A current hot topic is our roads – you don’t have to wait too long to hear somebody talking about congestion and how long it now takes to get from A to B; but from a policing point of view, our overriding objective is safety. To this end, the highways are a major focus. We’ve been working hard to ensure that our staff are deployed at the right times to highrisk locations but still some of what they are seeing, and what is been reported to us, is eye-rolling stuff. Please continue to report any sort of dangerous driving to us and we will do our absolute best to deal with every instance where other road users are being put at risk. You are our eyes and ears. We do ask that when reporting poor driving, keep in mind that we must prioritise, so what is inconvenient or irritating, but low-risk, might not make the cut. This doesn’t mean that we don’t understand your frustration, just that we need to send patrols to where they can do the most good. Another significant focus is drink driving. It seems that no matter what changes there have been in society’s attitudes there are still plenty of people who are prepared to take the chance. We will keep on with enforcement, in the towns, on rural roads and at all times of the day but it’s the conversations, attitudes and lack of acceptance of this behaviour by our communities that will have the greatest effect. When you have the chance to exert influence for the better, please do so. Collectively, this will make a difference. It might sound a little starry-eyed, but nationally, police have the mission of making New Zealand the world’s safest country. When you think about it, why wouldn’t we? To aim for anything less doesn’t make sense. In this country, we start with a lot of natural advantages, the most important of which is a strongly supportive society. Taking this a step further, at a local level we have got together have decided as a group, from the boss to the youngest constable, that we want to be the safest area within the country. Of course, we are only part of the picture and can’t achieve this on our own. The most important element is the partnership between police and community so please stay in touch, keep us in the loop and help in whatever way you feel you can in achieving our mission. Ferry Grief

Why did Mel get so much grief for speaking out about the appaulling Queenstown Ferry Service in the ODT? I must say, I’m appaulled too! Firstly the change in routes. Before Go Orange put a tight ass leash on the operation you could ask your friendly driver to drop you at any jetty, now they have strict allocated stops. For anyone living in the K-Heights area knows that the peninsula is quite large and there’s a huge chunk of local residents between The Hilton and Bayview. For the unfortunate people residing inbetween, those jetty’s have a 25 to 30 minute walk. Solution response - just park up at Hilton - pfft cos there’s so many parks? Bayview? I feel like I’m back tracking - might as well drive in. Now it’s the needing to stop at each location. Under the new system, when heading to The Hilton they must follow this route: Bayview - Kelvin Heights, Rees Hotel - Frankton, The Marina - Frankton and Hilton - Kelvin Heights.

There are occasions when, clearly, everybody is on the same stop but no no no - the driver is now tracked by GPS and ordered to stop at ALL stops - 30 minute boat trip added onto your 25-30 minute hike home. For local commuters of this Ferry service they encourage you to sign up for a $49 concession card - which is significantly cheaper than the old Water Taxi $80 concession payment BUT you can’t pay for a passenger on that card i.e - you can’t click two trips they’ll only allow one which is STUPID - You’ve already paid for it? What difference does it make? When you question that, you get a rude rehearsed response from the driver - in fact the drivers must be feeling the corporate squeeze because in general their attitude is super off putting. Yes it’s cheaper, yes it’s more frequent but I’m yearning for the old water taxi days because this new system is NOT for the locals and genuinely SUCKS. #boycotttheqtferry

Vegan GF Ice Cream Hunt The announcement of gluten free magnum had me sooo excited! Being a vegan, I had to stand by my morals and give up that unlawful dairy product that’s squeezed from the utter, creamed and frozen to then be licked off a stick. Ehyek! I pestered the supermarket assistant for weeks asking ‘Is it here yet? Is it here now? When? WHEN?!’ Desperate to taste something that I longed for which my morals would approve. That day came, I rushed to the freezer just by the checkout, rummaged through the other devil ice creams to find the glorious animal friendly Magnum. Just a quick check of the back to see if it’s gluten free annnnd no... No... NO.... NOOOOOO! You have got to be KIDDING ME!? The Vegan Magnum is NOT Gluten Free?!

I stood there astonished, my glorious dreams I had of enjoying this Magnum just came crashing down around me. Being vegan is challenging enough but being gluten free as well... Awwhhh MAN... the struggle is ongoing! SURELY vegan food manufactures would find a correlation between being vegan AND gluten free!!! Come ON!!! We are living in a modern world. Science has made it possible to eat plastic surely there is a way to get an Ice cream that’s vegan AND gluten free. Come on Magnum, I thought you had this nailed... #alonelyGFveganwaits

GIG Review

Rating: That was a waste of time. I talked during the performance.

Who: Marlon Williams and the Yarra Benders Where: Queenstown Memorial Centre When: Wednesday 27th February Reviewer: Ch’i Bangs Another Wednesday night gig, another mullet musician. Except this time, the atmosphere was completely different. Seated general admission and a very, very, well-behaved Queenstown crowd. Could it have been the healthy patches of grey leading by ‘polite applauding’ example? Or was it something to do with the bar closing ludicrously early at 9pm? Or just that people are in speechless awe of Marlon Williams? The Lyttleton-raised musician has gained international appeal off the back of his 2018 second studio album ‘Make way for Love’ – a heart ache, crooning, breakup compilation which is said to be up there with Bon Iver’s ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’. The trudging on the road, he’s made it back to Aotearoa for a massive home tour – Queenstown being one of the 12 stops. Support act were comical in between songs, Emily Fairlight and the… “What do I call you guys?” she asked the guitarist over the mic, “Errmmmm probably F**kers???” he replied. The crowd laughed. Short intermission, bar closed, everybody was quiet, seated – spotlight on Marlon. We didn’t move, the audience was strapped in to (what seemed like) a two-hour show. The first part of the set was intimate, a little same-sy but still had you open mouthed, grasping your chest and looking longingly at him as he moved his hips like Elvis and wavered like Roy Orbison over love agony lyrics, “Didn’t yooou laay beside me…

It was mmmk. Totally worth it. A gig to remember!

in my mum’s home,” a line from the song Beautiful Dress. “Ghee it feels like a school assembly,” looking over at the stunned mullet crowd. Vampire Again had him change styles, stripping down to a wife-beater and swaying amongst the seated crowd, in an attempt to encourage some standing movement. Nobody d a r e d. Some credit must be given to the backing band The Yarra Benders – Really tight, talented musicians. Dave Khan to the right of him picking up violin, guitar, keyboard, EVERYTHING and Ben Woolley to the left, on bass and absolutely, stunning backup vocals. Marlon exited as the band finished Dark Child with an extended jam. The second part of the show was more uppity. He dug into most of his 2015 self-titled album which is where most of my favourites lie; I’m Lost Without You and Strange Things. An encore performance left him solo, without a mic, toes edging on the stage, with an acoustic guitar, unplugged, to cover Barbara Dane’s When I Was a Young Girl. The band then joined him for the truly special closing song, Arahura. Marlon Williams. Your voice is extraordinary. My heart swoons. I wish I could’ve been standing up front lost in your performance but, it was too awkward. I would’ve been growled at by an elderly – you can kiss me in my dreams.

Marlon Williams and the Yarra Benders.

HURRICANES vs HIGHLANDERS If you are trying to pick a Super Rugby game this year please don’t listen to me. Only one thing I can rely on. Hurricanes to win this one, blind faith will prevail. CRUSADERS vs CHIEFS New coach, loss of senior players, you can see why the Chiefs have got so bad, and Damien Mackenzie at No. 10. Big problem.

WARATAHS vs REDS If this game was in Queensland I’d go Reds. But the Sydney factor should count for 15 points to the Tahs. BULLS vs SHARKS Who knows? Picking the South African conference has been impossible thus far. REBELS vs BRUMBIES I hate to say it but Quade Cooper is looking good. Outside Genia and the confidence is back. BLUES vs SUNWOLVES If I was betting my house on a game, it wouldn’t be this one. LIONS vs JAGUARES They would have celebrated long into Tuesday after last weeks win, I can’t see the Jags back up with anything other than a hangover.

Every year, Billboard publishes the ‘Power 100’, a list of the most powerful people in live, tech management and recorded music. 2018 was a special year because 17% of the list was female, up from just 10% in 2017. But it’s a small victory. Men still hold most of the top jobs in our music industry – often the big names we hear – Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Adele and Beyoncé are simply the face of a big brand that’s run predominantly by men. The story is similar in the New Zealand music industry, with major festivals like Rhythm and Alps mostly showing male performers (out of 40 acts, there were just 7 women this year). To inspire more women to get into the music industry, Auckland-based Lani Purkis and Teresa Patterson have organised a small, female-only festival to celebrate International Women’s Day on 8th March. Their aim is to provide a safe, respectful and inclusive environment for women and to make female artists and crew more visible in a bid to inspire the next generation of female artists and producers. Five venues across four cities are participating, including Queenstown’s Sherwood.

O’Neill Aotearoa Surf Film Festival 2019 – An epic night of surf cinema! This is the 7th annual ASFF, part of a national tour of some of the world’s best surf films. Includes audience giveaways from O’Neill and Corona. 13th March, 6:30pm – 10pm. World Bar, Church Street. Tickets $16 from asff.co.nz Award-winning indie/folk musician and singer Mel Parsons will play at the Queenstown show, alongside Canadian hypnotic folk muso Dana Sipos. Mel, who is originally from Westport, but has performed globally, says the Milk and Honey festival is a “great initiative.”

What we’re into Journal of Urgent Writing Published by Massey University Press, the Journal of Urgent Writing was published in 2016 (Volume 1) and 2017 (Volume 2). Both volumes contain contemporary writing by some of New Zealand’s best thinkers, from Mãmari Stephens on our threatened marae to Jo Randerson on dying, there’s plenty of fodder to feed your mind in this collection of provocative and passionate essays. Each essay is just a few pages long and provides food for thought for anyone living in New Zealand today. Intended to be an annual national discussion, 2018’s Volume 3 has yet to appear, which is probably a metaphor for something, but let’s not think about that too much…

“There’s an imbalance, particularly in the NZ music industry. The festival has some massive line ups and it’s great for younger women to see that,” she says. Talking about her own experience in the industry, Mel says: “I forged on anyway, but there’s definitely a lack of women. I was lucky, I had support but there must have been others out there who didn’t see that and have struggled. We’re trying to make a difference.” She says the Sherwood gig will be “intimate”, held in the Workshop space. Mel has not met Canadian Dana Sipos before, but she’s really looking forward to the gig and says audiences can expect something “really special.” Mel released a new record, ‘Glass Heart’, to critical acclaim at the end of 2018 and was already due to be in the region touring with her new material. She says she heard about the festival through “the industry grapevine” and asked to be part of it. “All of the feedback I’ve heard about the festival is really positive – it feels like the first of a kind, the first of a long-time thing. There’s lots to be really excited about and there’s a really great level of talent… which should be what it’s all about.” Mel Parsons and Dana Sipos, Milk and Honey Festival, Sherwood (554 Frankton Road, Queenstown). 8th March, 7:30pm – 10pm. Tickets are $36 + fees from Eventfinda.com

COMMUNITY NOTES What’s on?

Queenstown Hospice Shop

Doc’s Dilemma: Balancing Biodiversity And Visitors

Nelson Mandela once said, “I have always admired men and women who use their talents to serve the community.”

The Department of Conservation manages around one third of New Zealand’s land area, including some of our most visited spots and iconic scenery. Legally, it is required to protect fragile ecostems and threatened species AND manage the ever-increasing demands for access to them.

The success of the Queenstown Hospice Shop, 106 Gorge Road, is due to the fact that I have the most amazing team of volunteers.

DOC’s budget is split roughly 50:50 between these conservation and visitor management roles. Criticism – often trenchant and emotional – comes from both sides of this divide. DOC’s director-general Lou Sanson will look at the issues, ways forward and how the community can help.

Our goal is to turn top quality donations into funds so we can provide first class palliative care to those who live in the Wakatipu Basin. We do this through the work of three pallative nurses living in the area and providing full Hospice care in Invercargill.

Date: 8th March 2019 | Time: 6:00pm – 7:30pm Venue: The Rees Hotel

We are extremely lucky to have so many kind people, who donate high quality items that we are able to sell to our many delighted customers.

Playcentre Awareness Week 2019

This year we are looking to increase our number of volunteers. This will enable us to handle increasing donations of goods, improve customer service and raise more funds to so we can meet the needs of a growing population

Future Villagers – Showcasing the resources of Playcentre through play. Today’s children are tomorrow’s adults. We are a village and children are our future. That’s the focus of the 2019 campaign for Playcentre Awareness Week as they head into a new year of fostering our nation’s children. Come visit your local centre during this open week (4 – 10 March). If you cannot make a visit during Playcentre Awareness Week, feel welcome to visit any time. New members are always welcome. www.playcentre.org.nz Date: 4th – 10th March 2019 Venue: 57 Stanley St, Queenstown Wakatipu Toy Library Family Fun Day Come join us for a fun family day out!!! We will have the sausage sizzle going and plus yummy bake sale! We will be showcasing our NEW BOUNCY CASTLE, and there will be lots of new toys on display for members to explore!! Plus Will from Playball will be coming by at 11.30 for a fun playball demonstration! Come along and support your local Toy Library! Date: 2nd March 2019 | Time: 10:00am – 2:00pm Venue: Shotover Primary School Community Hall, Stalker Road

Volunteering at the Hospice shop provides a lot of satisfaction. The feel good factor of helping the community you live in, using your life skills and learning new ones. You get to meet people and make new friends. We have very flexible volunteering hours and most of all you will havie a lot of fun with a great bunch of men and women. The shop is open Monday to Friday 10am until 4pm and Saturday’s 10am until 3pm. During these hours we require people to sort and price our donations, organise displays, work the till, dust and clean and help our customers. If you are interested in finding out more, come into the shop and see me or just call 0274 354 319. John “Boggy” McDowell QSM Retail Manager Hospice Shop Queenstown

ARTHURS POINT Arthur’s Point has almost everything you could ask for – beautiful scenic views, the roaring Shotover River and Coronet Peak ski field right on your doorstep. However, it’s been crying out for a certain something – a proper local. Canyon Food & Brew Co opened its doors last year and ever since then we’ve been doing what we do best – serving fresh brews and delicious food to everyone who steps onto the biggest deck in Queenstown. It started off as a crazy dream – two local guys found the site down by the bridge and saw it’s potential. We could have just been another bar or restaurant but we thought why not be different? So we built a state of the art microbrewery. Our head brewer, Jonathan Kauri, is NZ born and bred and set out to make the freshest brews using local ingredients. At Canyon, you’ll find beer that is approachable but different, with a range of styles from all over the world perfectly crafted to complement our tasty menu. Find us under the bridge at 1 Arthurs Point Road to find out for yourself.
