A forest powered by the people - Kia ora. At the end of 2018, scientists from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reported we had only ten years to avoid catastrophic climate-driven change. Individuals, communities, towns, and countries have been asked by scientists, world leaders and school children to account for environmental, social and carbon costs. Essential to this is the need to take a regenerative approach to our lives and the economy. Treespace is our personal response to addressing the complex issues of climate change by planting native trees at scale and creating an opportunity for others to participate. New Zealand’s goal must be carbon neutrality and we want to make as big an impact as we can. The first site chosen for a Treespace native reforestation project is Mt Dewar. Just 7 kilometres from downtown Queenstown, Mt Dewar has 1,780 hectares of currently unproductive high-country farmland that’s burdened with wilding pines and introduced pest problems. Our goal is to restore and rebalance 99% of the mountain’s ecosystem through large scale native reforestation and natural regeneration, using 0.1% of the land to establish building platforms for a mountainside forest community. Proceeds from the sale of house sites will help fund planting over 400 hectares of native mountain beech forest across mid to lower elevations of Mt Dewar over a 15-year period. The maturing trees have the added benefit of visually absorbing future buildings with the forest settlement area. This, alongside the rewilding and ecological restoration of a further 1300 hectares of native shrubland and alpine tussock, will make Mt Dewar the largest commercial native reforestation in New Zealand’s history. A forest powered by the people. The Treespace project will provide housing for 53 families within a defined area on the lower corner of the mountain that adjoins Arthurs Point. 80% of the home sites proposed will be small footprint (10m x 10m) to promote small-house design to minimise environmental impact and maximise affordability. Public enjoyment, education and forging connections with nature are fundamental to the project’s success. The addition of a further 20kms of hiking and biking trails and the realignment of existing farm tracks will deliver over 50kms of public biking, hiking, and access trails across the mountain including a ridgeline trail, a summit to Long Gully route and connecting the Zoot trail to the lowest Coronet Peak Road base car. Regardless of Mt Dewar’s compromised ecological state, its current legal classification as an ‘Outstanding Natural Landscape’ means that the Treespace team are now seeking council and community endorsement to proceed. It is our hope that long-term thinking prevails and any potential short-term visual effects of buildings until the forest establishes itself are justified in light of the much bigger environmental movement that we are all a part of. If you would like to know more about the project or submissions hop onto our Facebook @treespacecommunity and we’d be happy to answer any questions. Nga mihi.

In Response to Last Weeks’ Editorial
Your blaming immigration NZ for QTs problems? Wow, must have missed the last election. Queenstown needs to understand if you want to run a business you are going to have start attracting kiwis - which it has neglected for years, and stop this ‘they don’t want to work here attitude’ - it was fine argument when we were a tiny town but the growth in the last 5 years means you simply won’t be able to run it off immigrants any longer. QT has got to stop blaming everyone else for its problems, we are not a special case. Just have a think about this phrase you used ‘immigration NZ needs to hurry up so we can run our businesses’. Also elaborate on this ‘sustainable growth you speak of?’ I’ve never seen sustainable growth in this region. It’s all done haphazardly with the view that public infrastructure needs to catch up to private needs. Jim has just come out and said this in regards to LTNZ fixing Ladies Mile. $22m of public money was spent on a 2 lane bridge which has done pretty much nothing due to ongoing growth.
Realistically, Kmart etc should never have been allowed to go ahead. 50 low paid jobs - including all the other box stores - and for what exactly? Money to be siphoned out of the area to large corporates. I’m not sure tourists were coming to shop at Kmart, but to get away from cities and into nature. So yes I’d expect a lot less tourists, and not stagnant but declining numbers. Airport was suggesting 5.1 million passengers by 2030 apparently? Good luck. Air New Zealand’s change in forecast was for me a little surprising, I was expecting maybe 12 months before this happened, but that it would is no surprise. And if we turn to tourism itself, the IPCC has told us to half carbon emissions by 2030 to have some chance of a liveable world. How many people will be able to rationalise travelling halfway across the planet as we approach 1.5C of warming and beyond? We need to try to understand the world we now live in, not one where ‘growth’ is the measure of how a society is performing.

Facebook/Website Comments Soft Plastic Recycling Woes - 686 This is extremely disappointing, where is the logic in this?? We’ve gone to lengths to remove single use soft plastic bags from stores as a way to cut down on the ridiculous amount of plastic we use. This is great, but there’s still far too much plastic being used on food products and other items we buy at the grocery store. Removing our chance to recycle these plastics does not make sense. Hopefully at some point in the future we won’t have soooo much plastic packaging on the items we buy, but at this stage collecting them and recycling them is a far better option than just throwing them in the trash. I’d love to see a response from the council on this topic McBike
This is not correct. QLDC transfer stations accept greenwaste, in fact some of it is chipped and reused by the Parks team.
More information about QLDC waste services can be found at www.qldc.govt.nz/rubbishand-recycling Not Just Traffic - 686
We understand that the privately-owned cleanfill/greenwaste site known as Stoney Creek notified that they were no longer accepting cleanfill or greenwaste from 20 January.
A Thank You Note A thank you to the person who returned my black bag with camera, note pad, WiFi, and glass. The bag was returned to the police and after some jokes with them my heart rate slowed. The person did not leave his name for us to thank. There must be a lot of honest people in Queenstown as we have heard this happens regularly.
We are from Adelaide and 2 weeks of holiday snaps seemed lost. Once again thank you good Samaritan we will all ways remember Queenstown. Regards Michael and Heather.
Traffic and pedestrian issues are related. If they removed the pedestrian crossing at the corner of Shotover and Brecon St - outside the Night N Day and replaced it with a pedestrian island where cars have right of way, the entire CBD would flow so much better. On a busy day the steady flow of pedestrians crossing there on their way to or from Skyline is relentless so the traffic gets backed up in both directions, causing further blockages in other parts of the CBD. Strangely the traffic boffins in the council seem to be totally oblivious to this simple fact. They should sit down in the park diagonally opposite Fegburger and watch it sometime - Queenstown’s traffic woes would be largely solved overnight. Daniel

The Art of Enjoying The Bustle In case you hadn’t noticed, this place is rather busy. And hectically busy places often get a pretty bad rep – especially from their inhabitants. To the passing tourist, the bustle might seem vibrant, energetic and somewhat exciting. But for the daily commuter battling through evermore-crowded streets, it might spark a hatred of all human beings. The bad news for us residents is that in the next the five to ten years, more and more will be squeezed into the confined walls of this miniature town. Browse through the local news, forums and bars and you’ll see and hear some serious concerns. Rightly so, without the proper infrastructure, rapid population increase can cause serious disadvantages… but I’m not here to moan, we’ll leave that to the whinge page. Instead it’s time we shed some light on the upside to busyness. There’s plenty of research that suggests there’s upsides to living in highly populated areas. Dr Jeanette Bickel of Toronto’s York University claims that, “people feel most content when they’re busy, and naturally, this occurs in highly populated, buzzing areas.” If places were track events, Queenstown would hold the pace of a 100m sprinter – we’ve certainly got a buzz. But how healthy is the frantic lifestyle? We’re often told that there’s negative side effects to busyness, such as an increased likelihood of becoming a smoker and a greater risk of developing coronary heart disease (not ideal). However, the fast-paced nature of city life is apparently ideal for reducing feelings of stress and anxiety. In 2017, researchers from Oxford University and the University of Hong
Kong assessed the health of 420,000 individuals from 22 cities. They concluded that those living in higher-density areas were more likely to be a healthy weight. We’re on to a winner here, Queenstown. Yes, houses are hard to come by, but so it should be in a desirable area otherwise it would lose its spark. You can’t just rock up and settle down easy-peasy. It’s hard, you’ve got to be patient, but it’s rewarding in the end. Yes, sometimes it feels like this small town can’t keep up with rapid change, but it is adapting. We’ve got one of the more efficient bus services in the country and a trip that would have cost you $7 two years ago now comes in at just $2. If that doesn’t scream winning, I simply don’t know what does. New businesses are popping up left, right and center and that old, smelly shopping centre is getting refurb, so things aren’t as bad as they seem people. Despite all the talk of big development, Queenstown’s still quite far from a concrete jungle – the beautiful mountains are still there and the sun still serenely sets over the lake. So, the next time you hear someone moan about the bleak future of this ‘once beautiful place’, realise that almost everyone thinks everything was better in the past. Forget nit-picking through setbacks and growth issues; tell them to sit down, have a pint, and enjoy the view. Because what we do have here in Queenstown is a pretty sweet deal. Arts+Culture A Taste of the Jungle at Sherwood Blues singer-songwriter, guitarist and banjo player C.W. Stoneking is coming to the Sherwood this Sunday. Known for his quirky blend of old-school-style-blues with a modern twist and a wild imagination, he last toured New Zealand with musical heavyweights Queens of the Stone Age. This time, he’ll be performing solo, tapping out a mix of old favourites and new songs. Rumour has it, we may even get a glimpse of his brand-new album. It’ll be Stoneking’s first new full-length album since 2014’s ARIA-awardwinning album, Gon’ Boogaloo. “It’s all half-finished,” he says from his current home in Nashville, USA. “I fool around a lot, I walk around singing songs, I start to feel them and then I get the tunes. Once they pop their heads up, the album will start popping up.” Born in rural Australia, Stoneking’s love of music was ignited by his American father’s music collection. He stumbled across early blues
compilation, Living With The Blues and soon began listening to a wide range of music from gospel and Hukum blues to ragtime. He busked and played in bars across Australia, drawing mixed audiences with his funny, rambling stories, old-time white suits and memorable music. He describes his music as “jungle music, which doesn’t mean anything.” The songs describe cartoonish jungles with giant snakes, intense heat and down-on-their-luck characters. After spending a number of years touring with his band, the Primitive Horn Ochestra, Stoneking spent much of 2018 touring solo. He says the Queenstown gig will be the same, “I’m stripping things right down, it’ll just me and my guitar.” “I’ve done a lot of touring, mostly solo… it’s been a different sort of year. It’s nice, it’s a different sort of connection.” His special guest will be Arrowtown local and Tui award-winner Holly Arrowsmith. “I haven’t played with Holly before,” says Stoneking, “But I’ve been looking at her music and I like it.” The Sherwood Hotel (554 Frankton Rd) is one of very few venues on Stoneking’s New Zealand tour – he’s not in the country often so music fans don’t want to miss this opportunity. Tickets are available from banishedmusic.com from $39.90 (plus fees).

NZSA Waitangi Day Literary Honours for Otago Writer The New Zealand Society of Authors has awarded the Waitiangi Day Literary Honours to Dunedin-based crime writer Liam McIlvanney. Born in Scotland, but now living in Dunedin, Liam has been making waves in the literary scene both locally and internationally with award-winning novels like Burns the Radical and Where the Dead Men Go. He received the award alongside Samoan/Maori author and columnist Lani Young, who was named the ACP Pacific Laureate last year. The Waitangi Day Honours are the only NZ literary awards bestowed by other writers and peers. Previous honourees include Owen Marshall, Paul Cleave and Man Booker winner Eleanor Catton. Siobhan Harvey, President of NZSA, said, “In person and product, both recipients represent different but complimentary examples of contemporary literature in Aotearoa.”

A Tribe is Forming For Hackers, Founders, and Investors. Startup Queenstown Lakes Trust is a coalition of entrepreneurs, investors, changemakers, and startup enthusiasts, building a startup ecosystem for the Queenstown Lakes District. For hackers, founders, investors, and those with a passion for entrepreneurship, Startup Queenstown Lakes has begun to build a framework of programmes, training, meet-ups and other initiatives to spur a strong startup community. Newly appointed CEO, James Burnes, former CMO at local tech startup Wherewolf, answers a few questions about the organization for LWB. LWB: How did the trust get started? Burnes: In late 2017 a group of entrepreneurs and startup enthusiasts gathered at Queenstown Resort College, prompted by Peter Harris, QLDC’s new economic development manager. Peter saw great momentum in Wanaka with the CUBE, but we lacked a cohesive effort to support talent on this side of the Crown Range. The energy to do something was palpable. The committee began by launching a monthly meet-up, Entrepreneur Coffee Jam. In partnership with Ignite Wanaka business chamber, who oversaw the CUBE at the time, we soon brought their entrepreneur programs to Queenstown. The pick-up was excellent. We knew we were on to something. Today we’re supported by QLDC, helping to build an economic infrastructure and generate new companies and jobs that leverage our destination status, tourism/adventure-tech expertise, and incredible work/life balance to attract big-thinking talent to launch their next big idea here. LWB: So where’s the best place for LWB readers to get involved? Burnes: The easiest place to start is by coming to our monthly Entrepreneur Coffee Jams. You get to hear the startup journey of 3 entrepreneurs in a casual setting, meet others who have the same entrepreneurial interests you may have, and find a tribe who can support you in your startup journey. LWB: What other programs does Startup Queenstown Lakes offer? Burnes: There are so many skill-building workshops and advice sessions, the best place to see what all we offer is to jump online and take a look at www.entrepreneurship.co.nz.

How about chocolates, baking, flowers, balloons, an adventure, pampering, thrill-seeking activity, dinner out or a night away in a hotel? We have hand-picked some local businesses around town to provide some inspiration to spoil your loved one this Valentine’s Day.

Originally Valentines Day was the celebration of martyrs death, not one but two St Valentines! The modern version has come about, we believe, because in February English birds pair off to produce eggs. The English nobility picked up the idea and started sending love notes during the mating-bird season. The festival got a further prompt though Shakespearian theatre where audiences were entertained by a lovestruck Orphelia who referred to herself as Hamlets Valentine. With the industrial revolution and the advent of the printing press came the arrival

of mass-produced cards and the poetry that appeared inside the card. Of course, Valentines was really commercialised when the manufacturers Cadbury and Hersheys hit upon the idea of marketing love styled chocolates over the Valentines period.
Today shops everywhere decorate their windows and merchandise heavily to celebrate the 14th February and if you haven’t booked a restaurant yet- do it now because on the day it will be impossible to get a booking.
