Introduction

British Comics Now is an initiative by the Lakes International Comic Art Festival, the UK’s development agency for comics. LICAF is a well-established event taking place each year in the UK’s Lake District and featuring the best in comic art from around the world. As well as showcasing great international comic artists and writers, having worked with 32 countries to date, we have an equally strong commitment to raising the profile of the great British comic art being produced and putting a spotlight on the independent sector.

Our mission is to raise the profile of British work and to help facilitate its journey into other parts of the world, into as many countries and languages as possible through the selling of rights, translation of works and more. To date our initiative has included delegations to international festivals in Asia, North America and Europe and a new International Rights Market at our annual festival, focusing on the selling of British Comics to overseas publishers. We are proud to publish the British Comics Now Catalogue 2025. It aims to provide a snapshot of British comics focussing on work available to buy, publish and distribute in other countries and languages.

The creators featured were chosen via an open call by a specialist jury and we hope to produce further catalogues in the future. Thank you to Bobby Joseph, Lucy Sullivan and Andy Oliver for helping us choose a rich and diverse selection.

A very big thank you to Arts Council England for their support for this project and our festival as a whole, and to the Adlard Family Foundation for their support for the catalogue, the International Rights Market and our work more broadly.

Synopsis

It’s springtime and the warring tribes of Ireland are on the rampage. Sweeney leads his men, with the priest, Ronan Finn, in tow to bless the souls of the dying. When Sweeney flouts the rules of battle he is cursed and cast adrift to wander half-man, half-bird, through the wilds of Ireland. Humiliated and fearful the wilderness breaks him down before slowly restoring him to his humanity. Sweeney’s Progress is the retelling of the medieval Irish poem, Buile Suibhne. An eco-fable and hymn to the natural world as a place of trial and healing.
