Lake Norman Woman of the Year, I knew exactly the kind of woman I wanted it to honor. Not because she had the biggest title, owned the most successful business, or had the longest list of accomplishments, but because she made the lives of the people around her better. I knew that woman because I was raised by her.
My mom was never a business owner. She was a pastor’s wife, an elementary school principal, a speaker and counselor, a grandmother to ten, and, most importantly to me, Mama to four daughters. She spent her life serving, teaching, encouraging, listening, and loving people. Much of what she did happened quietly, without applause or recognition. She simply saw what needed to be done and did it faithfully. When we lost her in 2021, I began thinking differently about legacy. The women who change our lives aren't always standing on stages or collecting awards. Sometimes they're packing lunches, sitting beside hospital beds, mentoring a young woman, volunteering at church, running a classroom, caring for aging parents, building a business, raising children, or being the friend who answers the phone when everyone else is asleep.

That is the heart behind our Lake Norman Woman of the Year. We want to celebrate women from every walk of life. Business owners and stay-at-home moms. Teachers and executives. Volunteers, caregivers, mentors, community leaders, and women whose greatest impact may never appear on a résumé. Last year, standing in a room filled with women celebrating other women, I knew we had created something special. Not because of the dresses, dinner, or awards, but because women were being seen. My mom taught me that a meaningful life isn't measured by how many people know your name. It's measured by how many lives are better because you were there.

More Than a Boutique: A Family Story At Whitlyn’s Boutique, family isn’t simply part of our story—it’s at the heart of everything we do. As a mother-daughter-owned boutique, we’ve had the privilege of building something together that reflects the things we both love: beautiful spaces, thoughtful gifts, great style, and creating a place where people genuinely enjoy spending time.
Family is at the heart of it all
From the beginning, we wanted Whitlyn’s to be more than a place to shop. We wanted it to feel like a destination— somewhere you could find the perfect outfit, a beautiful piece for your home, or a thoughtful gift for someone you love. Today, Whitlyn’s has something for the whole family, with carefully chosen collections for women, men and little ones, along with home décor, entertaining pieces, seasonal favorites and gifts. But what we treasure most are the relationships we’ve built along the way. It’s the conversations at the counter, familiar faces returning season after season, and families allowing us to be a small part of their celebrations and everyday moments. Being family-owned means there’s a little bit of us in everything we do. We choose the products, plan the displays, dream up the events and navigate this adventure together—different opinions and all! We’re incredibly grateful to the Lake Norman community for embracing our family business and allowing Whitlyn’s to become part of yours.

ABOUT DR. COLLINS Cindy shares: “There are very few people who can say they truly change lives every day, but Dr. Ashley Collins absolutely does.” A devoted follower of Christ, Dr. Collins and her husband Andrew have three children: Zander, Zane, and Zoe. As an adoptive parent herself, she is passionate about advocating for foster care and adoption. She is the owner of Collins Family Dentistry and Dreams Dental Sleep Center and has built a reputation for treating every patient like family. Her compassion is evident in everything she does but in 2024, she took that to the next level, donating a kidney to save the life of one of her patients. Furthermore, it inspired her to establish #OneBeanClub, an initiative dedicated to raising awareness about living kidney donation and celebrating the lives transformed through that remarkable act of generosity. IN HER OWN WORDS “My favorite verse is Ephesians 3:20 because it reminds me that if we allow Christ’s power to work within us, He can do far more than we could ever ask or imagine. That truth inspires me to show love and kindness every day, and when I ask God for opportunities to serve, He never disappoints. I’m grateful for the people who have shaped me: my mom, my husband, my children, Cindy, and my incredible team. They remind me to keep growing. I love building trusting relationships with patients, helping them overcome fear, and creating a dental home where they truly feel cared for.” SEEDS OF SERVICE Founder of #OneBeanClub to support and encourage living organ donors; Donate Life NC; church ministry; 4:12 Student Ministries; The Corner Table soup kitchen. w

H E N D AV E J O N E S , founder of Captive Coaching and Empowerment, asked to be the Presenting Sponsor of Lake Norman Woman’s Woman of the Year Gala benefiting Foster Love Adopt Repeat, it was not about advertising a business ... it was about love. Period. “When I learned that this year’s gala would benefit Foster Love Adopt Repeat,” Dave smiles, “I immediately knew I wanted to be involved. As the father of three adopted daughters, I’ve experienced firsthand the incredible difference a loving, stable family can make. Adoption has been one of the greatest blessings in my life. Every child deserves to know they are wanted, valued, and unconditionally loved, and I’m honored to support an organization that helps make that possible for so many families.”
That same heart for serving others has also shaped the business Dave built. Growing up, he watched his mother face struggles that left a lasting impression on him. Seeing the challenges she endured inspired a lifelong desire to help women recognize their value, heal from past hurts, and discover the confidence to build healthier, more fulfilling lives. From his mother’s influence to the joy of adopting his daughters, you can see why his support of this year’s gala makes perfect sense. It’s not just about sponsoring an event. It’s about championing women, supporting families, and giving children the opportunity to experience all the beauty this world has to offer. As we prepare to celebrate extraordinary women from across our communities at our annual Woman of the Year Gala on September 25, we are grateful for sponsors like Dave who understand that our greatest legacy is measured by the lives we touch. When businesses choose to support causes that strengthen families, empower women, and create brighter futures for children, our entire community benefits; and sometimes the most meaningful sponsorships aren’t about putting your name and logo on an event table. They’re about putting your heart behind a cause ... and that is where real change takes place. w

creating a legacy of
GRACE “THE WAY YOU HELP HEAL THE WORLD IS YOU START WITH YOUR OWN FAMILY.”
Mother Teresa
E
VERY ACT OF KINDNESS has a beginning, and for most of us, that beginning is found within our families. It is there that we first learn to love unconditionally, to show up for one another, and to understand that helping others is one of the greatest gifts we can offer. For local philanthropist Robin Salzman, those values became the inspiration behind the Giving With Grace Foundation, which she and her husband, Jack, established to support organizations creating meaningful change throughout our communities. Through grants that uplift women and children in crisis, support animal welfare, and advance other life-changing causes, the foundation reflects the couple’s enduring commitment to service. “People often ask me what inspired us to create the Giving With Grace Foundation,” Robin shares. “They expect the answer to begin with business or success, but the truth is much simpler than that. It begins with family. Every meal shared, every lesson passed from one generation to the next, every helping hand offered becomes part of the legacy we leave behind.” As someone who has spent decades working alongside nonprofits throughout the Lake Norman region, Robin has witnessed firsthand the healing power of compassion.
“Whether it’s supporting children and families, honoring veterans, caring for animals, encouraging education, or standing beside neighbors during life’s difficult moments, I’ve witnessed something extraordinary,” she says. “People are at their very best when they are helping others.” Our emotional wellbeing is strengthened through meaningful connections with the people we love and the communities we build together. Our spirits are renewed when we give of ourselves. In a world that often feels unpredictable and challenging, family and friendship remind us that we are never meant to navigate life’s journey alone. “Community is simply family with a larger table,” Robin smiles. “I hope the Giving With Grace Foundation becomes more than a source of financial support. I hope it becomes an invitation for others to discover the joy that comes from giving. In a world that often celebrates more, perhaps the greatest gift we can offer is simply more kindness, more grace, more time, and more love.” w
Robin Salzman is a longtime Lake Norman philanthropist, community volunteer, and president of the Giving With Grace Foundation. She and her husband, Jack, are the owners of The Serve Pickleball + Kitchen in Cornelius, and together they are dedicated to supporting local nonprofits and strengthening the community through generosity, compassion, and service.

ELCOME TO THE SOUTH, where the front porch is more than an entrance; it’s the heartbeat of the home. It’s where Grandma waves to passersby while snapping beans from her rocking chair. Neighbors gather for a little sweet tea and spicey talk. Teenagers steal that shy first kiss. Fall welcomes the colors, the costumes, and the candy, while Christmas transforms an ordinary porch into something magical. For Amanda Hoerdemann and Caitlin Pleasants, owners of The Porch Pop, those memories and traditions became the inspiration for their business. Amanda grew up in Cary, North Carolina, and studied hospitality and event management at East Carolina University. After college, she worked in private events in Washington, D.C., before moving to Charlotte where she got into real estate and now also owns her own staging company. “I feel like I’ve always been decorating and designing things ever since I was little,” Amanda shares. “Whether it was constantly rearranging my room (hello, staging!) to helping my mom with holiday decor for all seasons (hello, Porch Pop!), I’ve always gravitated towards setting a tone and making a theme come to life.”
26 S E P T E M B E R 2 0 2 6
Caitlin’s path was similar. A Mount Airy native, she studied communications and public relations at UNC Charlotte and built a career in event planning where she worked with a college department, a local museum, hotels, and catering sales.
“We started talking about how a beautifully styled porch could do exactly what a great event does,” Caitlin explains. “It sets the tone, creates a feeling, and makes people smile before they even step inside,” Amanda adds. Their backgrounds in hospitality continue to influence everything they do today. Their goal isn’t simply to decorate; it’s to remove the stress of creating a beautiful seasonal space so clients can focus on enjoying the season and the moments that matter most. Both women also understand the importance of balancing business and family. Amanda is mom to 6-year-old Hayes, while Caitlin is mom to Brysen, 6, and Andi, 2. For both, their children are their greatest accomplishments. At the heart of The Porch Pop is a mission. Whether it’s a front porch dressed in the colors of fall, a magical holiday display, or a welcoming look that lasts all year long, Amanda and Caitlin believe the smallest details can make the biggest impact. Every design is thoughtfully crafted to reflect the people who call it home, transforming an ordinary entryway into a warm welcome ... one porch at a time. w W R I T ER L E S L IE O G L E

At ClosetsbyDesign, that’s something I’ve had the privilege of witnessing for more than two decades now. Every family enters a new chapter at its own pace. Sometimes it’s preparing a nursery for a new baby. Other times it’s organizing a playroom, creating a more functional room for growing teenagers, welcoming adult children back home, or downsizing after the kids have started families of their own. No matter the stage, I believe our homes should support the way we live today while making room for what’s next. Our passion is helping families create spaces that make everyday life easier, less stressful, and more enjoyable. Organization isn’t just about storage; it’s about giving people more time to enjoy their busy lives.

SEPTEMBER 2026
One of the greatest blessings of owning this business has been the relationships we’ve built over the years. In fact, one of our longtime clients recently reached out and said,
“You designed our daughter’s nursery, and now she’s 11 years old. We need your help creating a room that works for this next stage of her life.” Moments like that mean the world to me. It’s incredibly rewarding to know we’ve been part of a family’s story from the very beginning. Watching one generation become the next is just one of the many reasons I love what I do. I’ve always believed that a home should grow alongside the people who live in it. As our lives pivot, our spaces should reflect those changes in ways that make life more functional, comfortable, and beautiful. Looking back on this past year, becoming a grandmother has given me an even deeper appreciation for the many seasons of life. That’s why I hope families see home organization as more than simply arranging shelves, drawers, and closets. It’s an opportunity to shape your home so that it reflects the way you live today while supporting the life you’re building for tomorrow. w

Navigating
meno pause with
EVIDENCE, EXPERIENCE, AND HEART
— Vanessa Everett, MD
INTRODUCING
ONE HEALTH’S VIRTUAL MENOPAUSE CLINIC
As an OB/GYN and Regional Medical Director for One Health Women’s Services, I’ve spent my career helping women navigate every stage of health. When I began my OB/GYN residency in the early 2000s, the landmark Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study had just been published. Almost overnight, the medical community’s approach to Menopause Hormone Therapy (MHT) shifted dramatically. MHT—once widely prescribed to ease the transition into menopause—was suddenly viewed as unsafe, linked in major headlines to increased risks of heart disease, stroke, and breast cancer. Understandably, both patients and healthcare providers pulled back. For years, fear dominated the conversation, leaving a vast gap in care for millions of women experiencing debilitating menopausal symptoms.
32 S E P T E M B E R 2 0 2 6
"Menopause brings hormonal changes that impact every cell in the body, causing physical and emotional shifts that may feel beyond our control. The good news is that lifestyle changes and comprehensive menopause care can help women do more than simply manage this transition—they can thrive."
(from L to R:) Mahala Spalsbury Mudiyam, MD, Jennifer L. Little, MD, FACOG, Vanessa Everett, MD, & Amy Price, FNP-C, MSCP
E V O LV I N G S C I E N C E : THE TIMING HYPOTHESIS AND 2022 BENCHMARKS About ten years ago, clinical researchers thoroughly reanalyzed the original WHI data, revealing critical nuances that changed everything. That reanalysis established what experts now call the timing hypothesis: when and how a woman starts hormone therapy determines its safety and efficacy. This evolved understanding culminated in current clinical benchmark guidelines issued in 2022 by The Menopause Society (formerly NAMS). These benchmarks give us vital pillars of modern menopause care:
WR I T E R JEN N I F ER L L I T T L E, M D , FA C O G
P HO T O G R AP HE R C H E L S E A B RE N
CUTTING THROUGH THE NOISE Unfortunately, while clinical guidance has become clearer, public information has only gotten noisier. The explosion of internet culture and social media influencers—including physician influencers—has created a "wild west" of menopause advice. Women seeking real answers are routinely bombarded with advertisements for unregulated supplements, anti-aging quick fixes, and unproven treatments that lack scientific evidence.
When trusted sources become hard to identify, women are left confused, frustrated, and often paying out-of-pocket for treatments that do not work. At One Health, we believe women deserve clear, evidencebased answers—not highpressure sales pitches or trendy fads. Healthcare during midlife should be empowering, safe, and accessible.
MENOPAUSE CARE IS PRIMARY CARE: A UNIFIED DUALS P E C I A LT Y M O D E L At its core, menopause care is primary care—it requires treating the whole woman, not just managing hormones. True midlife wellness encompasses essential cancer screenings, cardiovascular risk assessments, and bone health evaluations. By seamlessly integrating Family Physicians and OB/GYN specialists, One Health provides complete primary and preventive care alongside specialized management for perimenopause, menopause, and sexual health.
The Timing Window: For women who initiate hormone therapy under age 60 or within 10 years of their final menstrual period, the benefits—such as relief from vasomotor symptoms and longterm bone protection— frequently outweigh the potential risks.
The Healthy Tissue Hypothesis (The Right Candidate): Linked to starting MHT at the right time is using MHT in the right person. It is essential to look at a woman’s individual health history—including hormone-sensitive cancers, heart health, liver function, high cholesterol, diabetes, and smoking history. Evaluating these factors ensures that hormone therapy is a safe choice for her and will not increase her personal risk of heart disease, stroke, or dementia.
A COMPREHENSIVE, HOLISTIC TOOLKIT It is also important to recognize a clinical reality: not all symptoms of aging will benefit from Menopause Hormone Therapy, and MHT is not the right choice for everyone. If you are a woman who cannot or chooses not to take MHT due to age, personal health risk factors, or personal preference, it simply means we take a different approach. Despite the alarming narratives often found online, women can feel entirely confident that they can still lead a healthy, vibrant life without hormone therapy. Non-hormonal prescription options, targeted lifestyle modifications, and proactive wellness strategies offer proven, effective pathways to navigate this transition with strength and vitality. To provide truly comprehensive care, our virtual clinic collaborates seamlessly with One Health’s broader specialty networks, including: Nutrition and Mental Health Support: Partnering with our Agilix and Mind Healthy programs to address metabolic health, nutrition, and psychological well-being. Lifestyle Medicine: Integrating evidencebased lifestyle interventions—spanning sleep, stress management, and physical activity—to support long-term vitality.
No Mandatory Stop Age: Rather than enforcing an arbitrary cutoff (such as stopping therapy automatically at age 65), guidelines now support continuing treatment as long as the benefits outweigh the risks for an individual patient, managed through ongoing shared decision-making.
Route of Administration Matters: Evidence shows that transdermal options (like patches and gels) carry a significantly lower risk of blood clots and stroke compared to traditional oral hormones, giving providers safer delivery methods to personalize care.
In addition, low-dose vaginal estrogen for the treatment of Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM)—which includes symptoms like vaginal dryness, discomfort, and recurrent urinary issues—works locally with minimal systemic absorption. Because of its high safety profile, localized vaginal estrogen is available to women at any age needing symptom relief. While systemic Menopause Hormone Therapy for women starting after age 60 requires a more cautious, individualized approach due to cardiovascular considerations, today’s evidence allows us to offer comprehensive menopause care with renewed confidence.

A deeper CONNECTION: “I treat every patient like they're my family and how I'd want my sister, brother, or grandmother to be treated,” Rebecca Thomason says with a smile. As a family nurse practitioner with Iredell Family Medicine in Mooresville, she has found her passion in life. “They become a part of you versus you just being their provider,” she continues. “You're invested. For me, it has always been about forming connections. My goal is to help people navigate their healthcare journey and to understand them on a deeper level. Physical health is impacted by mental and spiritual health and vice versa. You can't just treat one aspect; it's a triangular approach.” FINDING HER purpose: Growing up in Elmira, New York, Rebecca originally planned to become an attorney, studying political science in college before life pointed her in a different direction where she could fulfill a desire to help others more. Rebecca became a certified nursing assistant and licensed practical nurse before earning her registered nurse credentials in 2006. She cared for patients in cardiac stepdown units, emergency departments, and outpatient surgery centers across New York, Virginia, and the Delmarva region while continuing her education. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing while working full-time before graduating as a family nurse practitioner in 2015 with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

outside THE OFFICE: Rebecca believes caring for herself is just as important as caring for others. She enjoys golfing, bowling, reading, and cheering for Alabama football alongside her husband. The couple also loves traveling, especially to warm-weather destinations throughout the Caribbean, with Grenada holding a special place in their hearts as their honeymoon destination. At home, they're happily outnumbered by their three beloved dogs: Jameson, Ginger, and Callie. KEEP growing: Looking back, Rebecca says one of her proudest accomplishments is putting herself through school. Yet despite everything she's achieved, she's still motivated by a desire to keep growing. “I always want to learn something new each day, whether about myself personally or my job. Every day is a chance to find new opportunities to improve.” w

with Stage III T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma at just 3 years old, his family’s world was turned upside down. What followed was 132 rounds of chemotherapy, countless hospital stays, and the kind of fight no child should ever have to face. But Luke fought ... and won. When he rang the bell at Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital, signaling the end of treatment, the Miller family made a promise: they would turn their pain into purpose. That promise became Luke and the Lost Bell, a children’s book written to remind every
child battling cancer that they are brave, they are loved, and they are never alone. Through their nonprofit, Next Chapter Station, the Miller family has donated over 500 copies of the book to hospitals, oncology clinics, and pediatric cancer organizations across the United States and Canada, ensuring no child or family ever has to pay for a copy. Now, they’re aiming higher. The family has set a goal of donating 1,000 books by September, putting hope into the hands of even more children and families navigating their own cancer journeys.

NEEDING MEN TO
CARE
FOR OVER 20 YEARS NOW, I’ve been helping women navigate the effects of emotional difficulties, barriers to workplace advancement, and the many challenges that stand in the way of empowerment. This month, I’m writing to enlist the support of every woman’s brother, father, and son—good-hearted men and boys whose help is essential to this mission. For too long women have believed that they must be the ones to “lift each other up.” I don’t fully believe this. I believe to improve society’s view of women also requires the assistance of men in the movement; just like we can’t as a society expect to have the greatest minds working on the greatest projects and innovations without having ALL people’s minds and brilliance on the tasks, both men’s and women’s. It’s the same thing with women’s equality and empowerment ... they shouldn’t have to do it alone.
Dave Jones is the founder of Captive Coaching and Empowerment. For years he has helped good-hearted women overcome drama and trauma to build confidence, set healthy boundaries, and step into their power. His passion for this work is deeply personal, inspired by the struggles of the women in his own life—especially his mom and sister. He’s also the host of the weekly podcast Her Discovered Power and now shares his insights in a monthly column by the same name in Lake Norman Woman Magazine.
Caring quietly is no longer enough for men to do. Vocal support that is clear, public, and consistent has impact. It shifts conversations in boardrooms, hiring decisions, and challenges harmful narratives. It signals to other men that equality is not a “women’s issue,” but a human one.
This moment calls for partnership. It calls for courage. It calls for other men, partners, brothers, fathers, friends, and colleagues to use their voices alongside ours. Not to speak for women, but to speak with them;
equality should never be a solo effort. When men speak up, they help dismantle the myths that exist and continue to render women as “lesser than” and it reminds others that they, nor I, are advocating for
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, EMOTIONAL DISCOVERY, & PERFORMANCE COACHING
Having male allies who stand beside them tells women in our world that those struggles are not theirs to carry alone. That their worth is not up for debate; it is inherent. And it needs to be a shared responsibility. Treasuring the women in our lives for what they mean to us is not enough. It must include defending them, supporting them, and letting them know you are their ally.
So ladies, talk with the men in your lives and tell them their voices matter. Ask them to use their courage to speak up when they witness inequity ... courage to challenge dismissive comments, advocate for fair policies, and support women’s empowerment. These are the things that good-hearted men will do, and if they won’t, it might reveal how those men really feel and maybe you need to know that too. Women have always been strong, usually having to use that strength to push through boundaries, walls, and glass ceilings. Silence can allow harm to grow, so we need good men to do more than care; we need them to speak. As the famous saying goes, the only thing necessary for this inequity to remain is that good men do nothing.
Through coaching and courses, Captive Coaching & Empowerment is committed to helping women live more empowered, intentional lives. E-mail David@captivecoachingandempowerment.com or visit www.captivecoachingandempowerment.com.

Is Teeth-Whitening For You? A Q&A WITH DR. JULIANNE COLVIN OF CRAWFORD & COLVIN DENTISTRY A H E A LT H Y W H I T E S M I L E I S O N E O F T H E M O S T AT T R A C T I V E
features in our society today. It can boost confidence and motivate healthy maintenance habits for good overall health. Over time, we often notice yellowing of our teeth due to age and eating and drinking habits. Patients often ask about teeth-whitening options to revitalize and brighten their smile, and there are several aspects to consider:
Who can whiten their teeth? If done correctly, teeth-whitening is safe and effective for anyone who has all of their adult teeth in healthy condition. It does not cause damage to tooth enamel and there are very few long-term risks. It is important to note that teeth with crowns and fillings will not respond well to whitening treatments, nor will those with cavities or poor surrounding gum health. Most dentists recommend whitening no earlier than the age of 14, as many teeth are still erupting during this time and are prone to higher sensitivity. Pregnant and nursing women should also avoid whitening, as the potential impact of swallowed whitening agents on a fetus or baby is unknown.
How does it work? The most effective whitening products contain hydrogen or carbamide peroxide, which penetrates tooth enamel and reaches discolored molecules within the dentin layer of the tooth. These internal stains are dissolved, producing whiter teeth. There may be some temporary sensitivity during the whitening process, but no damage or harm is caused to the tooth structure itself, when used as directed. It is important to avoid prolonged contact of peroxide products with gum tissue, however, as this can result in unnecessary soreness and inflammation which can last a few days.
What are my options? Teeth bleaching continues to be one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments. Bleaching works by using peroxide-based agents to break down stains and discoloration on the enamel and dentin, effectively lightening the shade of your teeth. While over-thecounter products like whitening strips, gels, and trays are widely available and convenient, professional treatments performed by a dentist offer faster and more dramatic results. w
What should patients expect with teeth bleaching? In-office procedures typically use a higher concentration of bleaching agents and may include light or laser activation to accelerate the process. However, not all discoloration can be erased with bleach— intrinsic stains caused by medication or trauma may require veneers or bonding. Tooth sensitivity is a common side effect but is usually temporary. To maintain your results, it’s important to avoid staining foods and beverages like coffee, red wine, and dark berries, especially in the first 48 hours after treatment. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups also help extend the benefits of bleaching. In general, teeth bleaching offers a safe, effective, and relatively quick path to a brighter smile.

AN ESTATE OF MIND
THREE IN A SERIES OF SIX COLUMNS
END-OF-LIFE
PLANNING M E G D. G O L D S T E I N , AT TO R N E Y-AT- L AW
North Carolina statutes grant you the right to require that your wishes be honored if you are at the end-of-life stage rather than permitting them to be followed. IN YOUR HEALTH CARE POWER OF ATTORNEY AND ADVANCE DIRECTIVE,
you may direct the administration or withholding of artificial nutrition and/ or artificial hydration, and specify that treatment (“life-prolonging measures”) shall or may be withheld when any, some, or all of the following conditions exist: You have an incurable or irreversible condition that will result in your death within a relatively short period of time; or You become unconscious and, to a high degree of medical certainty, will never regain consciousness; or You suffer from advanced dementia or any other condition resulting in the substantial loss of cognitive ability and that loss, to a high degree of medical certainty, is not reversible.
“Life-prolonging procedures” is defined as: Medical procedures or interventions which in the judgment of the attending physician would serve only to postpone artificially the moment of death by sustaining, restoring, or supplanting a vital function, including mechanical ventilation, dialysis, antibiotics, artificial nutrition and hydration, and similar forms of treatment. Life-prolonging measures do not include care necessary to provide comfort or to alleviate pain. Although as a practical matter, the attending physician has the discretion to determine when the conditions have or have not been met, once the conditions have been satisfied, an attending physician will be able to rely on “shall” when family members have different views than those expressed in your Health Care Power of Attorney and Advance Directive. On the other hand, “shall” will provide family members with some leverage when an attending physician is vacillating regarding your particular medical condition.
A health care agent may be authorized to make certain post-mortem decisions on your behalf if you have not made these decisions for yourself prior to your death. You may grant or withhold from your health care agent the power to (1) authorize an autopsy, (2) consent to donation of your tissue or organs for transplantation or therapy, (3) donate your body for anatomical study, and (4) direct the disposition of your remains—whether your body is buried or cremated. The statutes do not address differing cultural and religious values in our society. Health care powers of attorney and advance directives provide the flexibility to tailor the documents to your particular desires and wishes. You may also address mental health treatments and resuscitation (a DNR order). A copy of your health care power of attorney and advance directive should be given to your primary physician for placement in your medical file. In addition, you should provide a copy to your designated health care agent and place your documents in an easily accessible place at your home. The burden of making our end-of-life decisions should not be left to our family or the courts. Because the law grants us the right to make these decisions for ourselves, we need to exercise our right to self-direct rather than leaving the burden to others.

Goldstein, Attorney-at-Law, has 45 years of extensive legal experience and is well-versed in estate planning, trust and estate administration, fiduciary relationships, charitable giving, and the formation and continuation of business and charitable entities. “Growing up, my childhood nickname was ‘Kellbell,’ so when I turned my passion into a business, the name just felt right. It’s personal, playful, and perfectly captures the heart behind what I do.” S O B E A M S K E L LY H O U B O LT, owner of KELLBELL+CO., serving the Charlotte and Lake Norman region with stunning event décor that transforms special occasions into lasting memories. A North Carolina native who grew up in the area and attended UNC Charlotte, Kelly has built a business that blends imagination, organization, and a genuine passion for making people feel special. “I’ve always been artistic, but I’m also incredibly organized,” she explains. “Event planning just came naturally. I love taking a client’s ideas and weaving them into one unforgettable experience. While event planning laid the foundation for her company, balloons unexpectedly became her signature. When her niece was born 11 years ago, Kelly decided every milestone deserved to be bigger, brighter, and more memorable than the last. Balloons had always been part of her family’s traditions, but she soon discovered they could become striking works of art rather than simple helium bouquets.

Building KELLBELL+CO. has also introduced her to a community of fellow entrepreneurs who understand both the triumphs and the challenges of small business ownership. Those relationships have become just as meaningful as the clients she serves. “Work-life balance is definitely still a work in progress for me,” Kelly admits with a smile. It helps that I genuinely love what I do, and thankfully I have an incredible support team in my husband and parents ... I couldn’t do this without them.”
beyond Lake Norman. She dreams of opening KELLBELL+CO. franchises throughout North America while maintaining the quality and innovation that have become her hallmark. Kelly’s authenticity, paired with her relentless drive to learn and grow every day, is perhaps what truly sets her apart. Whether she’s styling an intimate gathering or envisioning nationwide expansion, her mission remains the same: to create exquisite designs for the moments that matter most ... and to help people fully celebrate life! w

Professionally, she’s especially proud that the business has doubled in size every year since opening. That remarkable growth hasn’t happened by accident. It has come through confidence, consistency, and recognizing the value of her work. “I’ve become comfortable standing behind my pricing because I know the quality I deliver,” she says. “That confidence has changed everything.” Kelly’s longterm vision reaches far

Unlocking Medicare BENEFITS YOU MAY BE MISSING AND HOW TO CLAIM THEM Every year, billions of dollars in Medicare benefits go unclaimed — not because people don’t qualify, but because no one told them where to look. If you or someone you love is on Medicare, consider this your starting point. YOUR FIRST STOP:
BenefitsCheckUp.org
Benefits Check Up is a free, confidential online tool created by the National Council on Aging that matches older adults with benefits programs based on their financial situation and location. You answer a few simple questions and the tool surfaces programs you may qualify for (many with nothing to do with income and everything to do with your circumstances). The site connects users with nearly 2,000 benefits programs covering food, medicine, utilities, and daily expenses including Medicare Savings Programs, the Part D Low-Income Subsidy, SNAP, and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Visit BenefitsCheckUp.org or call 1-800-794-6559.
The Eldercare Locator:
A national resource most people have never heard of. Funded by the U.S. Administration on Aging, the Eldercare Locator connects older adults and people with disabilities with local services — from transportation and housing to benefits eligibility and home-based care. Call 800-677-1116, Monday through Friday, or visit eldercare. acl.gov. If you’re not sure what to ask or where to turn, start here.

EXTRA HELP:
The Most Underused Benefit in Medicare
The Extra Help program (also called the Low-Income Subsidy) helps cover Part D prescription drug costs. The Social Security Administration estimates its average annual value at $5,700 per person. In 2026, qualifying beneficiaries pay no more than $5.10 for generics and $12.65 for brand-name drugs, with no coverage gap and no deductible. Eligibility is based on income and resources, but the only way to know for certain is to apply. Do that at ssa.gov/ extrahelp or by calling 1-800-772-1213.
MEDICARE SAVINGS PROGRAMS:
Over $8,000 in Annual Value
Medicare Savings Programs are stateadministered programs that help cover premiums, deductibles, and cost-sharing for people with limited income. Enrollment in an MSP combined with Extra Help is estimated to save individuals at least $8,400 annually. Yet an estimated 40% of eligible people are still not enrolled, largely because they assume they won’t qualify. Apply through your state Medicaid office. Even if you are unsure, apply anyway.
The Bottom Line
The gap between what Medicare recipients are entitled to and what they actually receive is almost always an information gap. These programs are real, funded, and available right now, and most people who qualify have never heard of them. That’s where an independent broker earns their value. We don’t just help you navigate the plans; we help you understand everything Medicare has available to you. w

HERE she IS WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO THE LAKE NORMAN AREA? “Born and raised in Germany, I never imagined that becoming an au pair in the United States would completely change the direction of my life. I fell in love with America, extended my stay, attended college in Wisconsin, and eventually settled in North Carolina, where I met my husband, who is also German. Today we’re raising our daughters, Allina, 4, and Annabelle, 2, bilingually, and that’s one of my greatest joys.”
HOW DID YOUR PERSONAL JOURNEY LEAD YOU TO CREATE MONEY MINDSET, LLC? “My career took me from paralegal, to sales, to executive assistant, and then to human resources before I finally followed the dream that had been on my heart for nearly a decade ... launching Money Mindset to help women create financial confidence. My business exists because I’ve been where so many women are. After a difficult season of life, I found myself newly single, living in North Carolina with more than $20,000 in debt, and no savings. Bankruptcy was suggested, but after working at a bankruptcy law firm, I understood the emotional toll it could take. Instead, I made a promise that money would never have that much control over my life again. I created spreadsheets, prioritized every debt, and slowly paid them off one by one. That lonely journey became my inspiration because I wanted other women to know they don’t have to figure it out alone.” YOU OFTEN SAY THAT MONEY PROBLEMS AREN’T ABOUT MATH, BUT BEHAVIOR, COULD YOU ELABORATE?
anika
“It’s probably the biggest lesson that I’ve learned. We often know what we should do, but changing lifelong habits and deeply rooted beliefs about money is the hard part. That’s why I focus just as much on mindset as I do budgeting. My favorite advice is simple: plan your money before the month begins, schedule regular money dates with your spouse, build an emergency fund, and don’t abandon your plan when life throws you a curveball. Wealth isn’t built through flashy purchases or trendy investments. It’s built through small, consistent decisions repeated over time.”

AS BOTH A BUSINESS OWNER AND A MOM, HOW DO YOU KEEP A PROPER WORK-HOME BALANCE? Balance isn’t something I believe you achieve once and keep forever. There are simply different seasons of life. Right now my business is still young, so many evenings and weekends are spent building behind the scenes. But when I’m with my girls, they have my complete attention. I believe 20 minutes of uninterrupted time is far more valuable than two distracted hours spent looking at a phone or laptop. I also make time to journal, read something inspirational, take walks, and explore new places with my family. Those moments keep me grounded and remind me why I work so hard. w

into separate categories (physical, mental, and emotional) but our bodies don't work that way. The way we move affects how we think. Stress can show up as headaches or muscle tension. Poor sleep can leave us physically drained and emotionally overwhelmed. When one area of our wellbeing is struggling, the others often feel the impact. That's why many health professionals are embracing a more holistic approach to wellness ... one that recognizes the body and mind are constantly working together. Rather than focusing on a
THE POWER OF
whole-person
single symptom, whole-person wellness encourages us to look at the bigger picture and ask a simple question: What does my body need to function at its best?
WELLNESS MOVEMENT IS MEDICINE You don't have to train for a marathon to benefit from movement. A daily walk, stretching, yoga, strength training, swimming, or simply taking breaks from sitting throughout the day can improve flexibility, circulation, posture, and energy levels. For some people, supportive therapies such as chiropractic care, massage therapy, or physical therapy may also play a valuable role in improving mobility and relieving discomfort. The goal isn't simply to eliminate pain ... it's to help your body move more freely so you can enjoy everyday life.
58 S E P T E M B E R 2 0 2 6
CARING FOR YOUR MIND Mental wellness deserves the same attention we give our physical health. Chronic stress affects nearly every system in the body, influencing sleep, concentration, digestion, immune function, and even our perception of pain. Creating moments of calm doesn't have to be complicated. Deep breathing, spending time outdoors, journaling, meditation, meaningful conversations, or simply stepping away from technology for a few minutes each day can help quiet the mind and restore perspective.
LISTEN TO WHAT YOUR BODY IS SAYING Our bodies are remarkably good at communicating when something is off. Persistent aches, stiffness, fatigue, poor sleep, headaches, digestive issues, or increased stress may all be signs that it's time to slow down and pay attention. Instead of ignoring these signals or simply pushing through them, consider them an invitation to evaluate your daily habits. Are you moving enough? Are you sleeping well? Are you managing stress in healthy ways? Are you taking time to recover and recharge? Small changes can make a meaningful difference over time. w
