NOVEMBER OFTEN ARRIVES

with expectations: happy families gathered around perfectly set Thanksgiving tables, familiar traditions, and everyone smiling as the holiday season begins. But life doesn’t always look like a holiday card.

E

Maybe this is your first Thanksgiving without someone you love. Maybe family relationships are complicated. Maybe life simply doesn’t look the way you thought it would by now.

There is wisdom in those words, especially this time of year.

When we honor veterans, we must also remember the families who serve alongside them. Military service can mean spouses holding down the home while someone they love is deployed. It can mean children missing a parent at birthdays, holidays, school events, and all those ordinary moments that make up a life. These families sacrifice quietly, and their service matters too.

It’s not what we wanted. It’s not what we planned. But it’s what we have.

Maybe gratitude and grief can sit at the same table.

“It’s not what we wanted, it’s not what we planned, but it’s what we have. So we do the best with what we have.”

November brings Thanksgiving and Veterans Day, and this month we are honored to share the stories of female veterans in our community. These women have served in different branches, eras, and roles, but their stories share a common thread: courage, sacrifice, resilience, and service.

For some military families, the holidays have meant an empty chair because someone they love is serving far from home. For others, that chair represents someone who isn’t coming back.

BECAUSE YOU

SERVED A LEGACY OF SUPPORT FOR VETERANS

IN A COMMUNIT Y THAT PRIDES

itself on honoring those who serve, one local organization is making a tangible difference for veterans and their families. Because You Served, founded by Jarrett Hodson and his father, David Hodson, is dedicated to providing veterans with the support and resources they need during one of life’s most significant transitions— buying or selling a home. The idea for the organization was born out of Jarrett’s experience, first as a Citadel graduate and later as a mortgage lender in the real estate industry. He recognized a recurring challenge: veterans, frequently relocating due to service obligations, often faced the same closing costs and real estate hurdles as civilian buyers. Jarrett wanted to create a solution that would ease the financial and logistical burden on these men and women, giving back in a meaningful way for their sacrifices. With his extensive background in community service, entrepreneurship, and veteran advocacy, David became the driving force in turning this vision into a reality. Under his guidance, Because You Served now offers veterans and family members access to complimentary real estate services nationwide, ensuring they can

navigate home transactions with confidence, transparency, and care. The program is supported by sponsors (both real estate agents and businesses) who are dedicated to those who serve. But the organization’s impact goes far beyond real estate. Because You Served works tirelessly to raise awareness of veteran needs in the local community. “Our mission is simple,” David shares. “We want to honor the commitment of our veterans by making their lives just a little easier,

whether it’s a new home, a new community, or simply knowing someone has their back. That philosophy extends to our first responders as well who can now benefit from the Because You Served program.” The organization’s work resonates deeply in the area, where residents have embraced the mission whole-heartedly. Because You Served has partnered with local police and fire departments to bring service and outreach programs to our communities and has cultivated a network of supporters who share the vision of giving veterans the recognition and resources they deserve. As the organization grows, David and Jarrett remain committed to innovation and compassion. Their approach blends practical assistance with heartfelt advocacy, ensuring veterans and first responders are equipped to thrive in their civilian lives while feeling celebrated for their service. w

Because You Served is more than an organization—it’s a movement, one that exemplifies the power of community and the importance of giving back. To learn more, please visit www.becauseyouserved.com.

HARWARD

KATHI HARWARD served in the

U.S. Army from 2001 to 2003 as a 92G food service specialist. Always knowing she wanted to work with children, she saw the Army’s college benefits and the GI Bill as an opportunity to pursue that dream. Since her discharge, she has earned three degrees: an associate degree in general studies, a bachelor’s degree in elementary education with an emphasis in math, and a master’s degree in early childhood education.

WO M E N of VA L O R Throughout our nation’s history, women have answered the call to serve, demonstrating extraordinary courage, resilience, and patriotism. Lake Norman

Woman magazine and WSIC Radio, in partnership with Katie Stankiewicz, CEO of Willow Equine and Executive Director of Soul to Sole Connection, proudly honor three local women whose military service, personal sacrifices, and enduring contributions continue to inspire us all.

16

NOVEMBER 2026

Her Army experience took an unexpected turn when the September 11 attacks occurred. “I was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas,” she shares, “when orders came for deployment; however, I was not able to deploy as I was pending a medical discharge. I was diagnosed with aerobic and environmental-induced asthma. One of the greatest challenges was watching fellow soldiers, including my husband, deploy to Iraq. We even spent our first wedding anniversary apart.” Today, Kathi and her husband have been married for 24 years and have two beautiful daughters. She hopes more Americans understand that military service reaches far beyond the individual in uniform. It touches spouses, children, extended family, friends, and the support systems that help loved ones navigate deployments, uncertainty, and time apart. Kathi’s journey is a testament to the power of following your calling, embracing opportunities, and persevering through life’s unexpected turns. For women considering military service, she offers this encouragement: “DO IT if that is what your heart tells you to do! Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. Just be mentally prepared for people trying to put you down. But don’t let them stop you.”

college and receiving her commission in 1992, Marlo Mikeal became an aircraft maintenance officer with the U.S. Air Force, primarily working with C-130 aircraft. She deployed twice to Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Southern Watch, helping enforce the no-fly zone over southern Iraq. “I was introduced to the idea of the Air Force through a friend of mine while I was in college,” Marlo shares. “This was way outside my comfort zone, but I was drawn to it. Once I got involved and realized how much this opened up my world, I was hooked.” Military service challenged Marlo to grow as both an officer and a leader, balancing the technical demands of aircraft maintenance with the responsibility of leading others. “As a young officer, you are immediately put into a leadership position of some

served in the U.S. Coast Guard, witnessing both peacetime and wartime operations. Throughout her 25-year career, she contributed to homeland security, maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, disaster relief, and missions following September 11. “I was inspired to join the Coast Guard,” she shares, “because I wanted to serve our nation, see the world, and get my education. Protecting American waterways and making a difference in people’s lives also inspired me. The camaraderie and trust among service members are unlike anything else. Knowing that your team is counting on you, and that you can count on them, creates bonds that last a lifetime.” Helping others during emergencies and disasters made that commitment especially meaningful for Paige. One of her greatest challenges, however, was balancing her military responsibilities with family life. Long hours, time at sea, and unexpected missions often meant missing holidays, birthdays, and many milestone moments.

Transitioning back to civilian life after the military presents its own hurdles as veterans adjust to a new world “back home.” Reestablishing routines, building connections, and navigating unfamiliar professional and personal situations can feel overwhelming at times. “Despite the many challenges, the military allowed me to grow as a leader, continue learning, and discover a world I wouldn’t have known otherwise. Above all, it gave me a sense of purpose and belonging to something much bigger than myself.”

Paige

“Military personnel come from all walks of life and serve for many different KEENAN reasons,” she says, “but they share a commitment to something greater than themselves. Behind that dedication are families navigating separation and uncertainty while their loved ones protect the nation.” For women considering the military, Paige encourages confidence and an open mind. She urges them to explore available paths rather than allow stereotypes or expectations to dictate their choices. “Be confident in your abilities,” she advises, “work hard, and never be afraid to take on challenges. Your dedication, professionalism, and character will earn respect and open doors throughout your military career and beyond.” w

SERVE, TOO: THE INVISIBLE WEIGHT CARRIED B Y M I L I TA RY SPOUSES WHEN WE VISUALIZE MILITARY service, we often picture a person in uniform. We see commitment, deployments, sacrifice, and pride. Behind that person often stands someone whose life has also been profoundly shaped by that service: their spouse. Military spouses may not have taken an oath or worn a uniform, yet they live within the rhythm of military life. They wait for orders. They pack the boxes. Change jobs. Raise children. Answer late-night phone calls. Navigate uncertainty. Celebrate homecomings while quietly wondering what has changed. Spouses carry burdens that often go unseen.

18

NOVEMBER 2026

During deployment, military spouses frequently become the steady point at home while everything around them shifts. They become the primary parent, decision-maker, household manager, emotional anchor, and problem-solver, while also experiencing loneliness, overwhelm, and the persistent awareness that the person they love may be in danger. The impact of service does not necessarily end when deployment ends. Reintegration brings another period of adjustment as families learn how to live together again. Homecoming can be beautiful, but it is not always simple. The spouse welcoming someone home may discover that returning home and feeling at home are two very different things. Some service members return carrying experiences that cannot simply be left behind. Sleep and communication may be different. Crowds may feel uncomfortable. For those experiencing post-traumatic stress symptoms such as anger, withdrawal, hypervigilance, nightmares, emotional numbness, or difficulty reconnecting can become part of daily life. When that happens, the entire family feels the impact. Military families are diverse, and many demonstrate tremendous resilience. When a loved one is living with PTSD, families may adjust routines and behaviors to accommodate symptoms and maintain a sense of stability. Over time, spouses themselves can experience significant stress, exhaustion, and caregiver burden. The service member’s trauma and the spouse’s experience are not the same. The effects of trauma ripple through relationships, marriages, and entire families.

Military spouses are often praised for being strong, adaptable, independent, and resilient. Those words are meant as compliments. Sometimes our admiration for someone’s strength prevents us from noticing their exhaustion. As we support our military community, our circle of care cannot stop with the service member or veteran. It must include spouses, children, and the entire family system. Ask them, “How are YOU really doing?” Then listen. Not only to the answer, but also to what may remain unsaid. Support can look remarkably ordinary. Bring dinner. Offer childcare. Check in throughout the deployment, not just during the first few weeks. Invite them for coffee. Remember important dates. Continue showing up. Encourage access to mental health support for individuals, couples, and families. Caring for the person standing beside the service member does not diminish the service member’s sacrifice. It strengthens the family. When we say we support our military, veterans, and their families, “families” cannot be the quiet word at the end of the sentence ... they are part of the mission, too. w

In honor of military moms everywhere, we are honored to introduce you to two Lake Norman women whose love, strength, and sacrifices are woven into their children’s journeys of service. Through pride, worry, distance, and countless prayers, these mothers remind us that serving our country is a family affair.

WRITER LESLIE OGLE

It is difficult to put into words the impact having a child join the military has on a mother’s life. While other parents look forward to college visits, academic milestones, and holiday breaks, military moms pray, worry, and wait for the next phone call. We feel immeasurable pride that our children are serving something bigger than themselves, yet that pride comes with a heartache and fear that are difficult to describe.

Annie Hanson OWNER OF THE CLOSET NICHE

My son, Airman first class JACOB MONSOUR, serves in the United States Air Force. He left for boot camp the day before his 20th birthday in June 2025, marking the first birthday of his I had ever missed. This summer, he celebrated his 21st birthday while stationed in Italy.

news broadcasts that have become too difficult to watch. No matter where the military sends Jacob, my heart is always with him. I strive to turn worry into faith and fear into courage. As a military mom, I must smile when I want to cry, cheer him on when I want to hold him close, and accept that he is his own man, walking his own path. My advice to fellow military moms is simple: Pray, Support, Encourage, Wait, and Repeat!

I am beyond proud of my son, yet I miss him every day. I support him while worrying about his safety and grieving the birthdays, holidays, and everyday moments we miss together. Being a military mom requires embracing the unknown and finding the strength to endure challenges, just as he is doing. Others may see bravery, but I see sacrifice: an empty chair, a phone I keep close, late-night worries, and

Jennifer L. Gipp VP OF PHILANTHROPY AND M A R K E T I N G AT P U R P L E H E A R T H O M E S

First and foremost, I’m a mom. My husband has been my biggest supporter and together we have two children, Michael and Maddie. Michael was already serving in the Marine Corps when I joined Purple Heart Homes and was a big part of what drew me to its mission. MICHAEL GIPP has been a Marine for six years, including four years stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and recently reenlisted. One of my hardest moments came when he first left for boot camp. For 13 weeks, there were no phone calls or texts, only the hope of a letter. I still have the first one he sent. When I finally heard his voice, the tears came the moment he said “Mom.” Being a military mom is a combination of enormous pride, worry, and learning to let go. Watching Michael become a leader, especially when my husband and I traveled to Japan to pin him at his promotion to sergeant, was one of my proudest mama moments.

His service has also changed how I see the veterans we serve. Nearly half of the Purple Heart Homes team are veterans, and their experiences have helped me better understand what Michael may be going through, even when he doesn’t share every detail. Everyone we serve is somebody’s “Michael.” Someone watched them leave, waited for a phone call, worried about them, and celebrated their accomplishments. Military service affects entire families, and I hope people remember the loved ones standing behind every person in uniform. Through Purple Heart Homes, I have the privilege of giving back to those who have given so much. w

the BEYOND

UNIFORM Long after the uniform is hung up for the last time, the experiences of serving in the military continue to shape a person’s life. The challenges faced, friendships formed, and lessons learned become part of a story that does not end when active duty does. In this Tribute to Veterans edition, we take a closer look at one of those journeys through the eyes of Dr. Lindsay Montgomery, who spent eight years in the United States Navy.

22 N O V E M B E R 2 0 2 6

A S C O - O W N E R O F L E M B O M O N T G O M E RY Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Mooresville, she and her sister, Dr. Kara Lembo, have built a thriving practice and are celebrating their 15th year in business. “My years in the Navy gave me an incredible opportunity to grow as a dentist and as a leader,” she shares. “I gained valuable experience in dentistry while working with people from many different backgrounds. It taught me how to take responsibility and stay focused when others were counting on me. The camaraderie among everyone was the best, and I have carried that with me through the years.” Serving alongside others taught her the importance of trust, teamwork, and knowing that those around you are equally committed to the mission. Her time in uniform also gave her a greater understanding of her own abilities. “Learning what I was capable of,” she explains, “particularly in a leadership role, became one of the lasting gifts of my time in the service. The Navy taught me to be adaptable and to keep moving forward, even when circumstances were demanding. Those lessons did not stay behind when I left the military.” Dr. Montgomery hopes Americans remember that the impact of military service extends beyond the person wearing the uniform. Families sacrifice, too. “Not being with your family when deployed overseas is the hardest sacrifice of all,” she reflects. For Dr. Montgomery, the Navy is not simply a chapter in her past. It remains part of the foundation on which she has built her life and her career, influencing how she leads, how she serves others, and how she meets the challenges that come her way. The uniform may be tucked away, but what she learned while wearing it endures. w

PRESERVING the PAST,

BUILDING the FUTURE

CORNELIUS IS BRINGING

a major new attraction to life that honors its past while looking toward its future. The Cornelius History Museum will highlight the town’s agricultural roots, early settlers, veterans, and economic growth while creating a new gathering place for the community. The Cornelius History Museum Board President is David Hodson, who also serves as CEO of Because You Served, LLC. David sees the project as a way to strengthen community ties. “This museum isn’t just about preserving artifacts,” he says, “it’s about preserving stories ... stories of the farmers, families, and veterans who shaped Cornelius and continue to inspire us today.” In June, the museum announced a formal campaign to raise the funds necessary to bring the museum to life. To date, $925,000 has been raised through a combination of state grants and individual donations, putting the project nearly halfway toward its approximately $2 million goal. “We’re excited to see the museum really beginning to take shape. The design is complete, our building permits have been approved, and early site work is underway. The interior demolition

24 N O V E M B E R 2 0 2 6

is finished, and we installed new windows this summer. Additionally, our contractor is now working on the HVAC and fire prevention systems, and we have construction funding through the end of the year.”

“KIDS WILL BE ABLE TO TOUCH, SEE, AND EVEN HEAR THE HISTORY THAT BUILT CORNELIUS.” The museum will occupy the Agriculture Building on School Street, which once served as a hub for teaching modern farming practices in the early 1900s. Interactive exhibits will combine historical artifacts with engaging educational programs. “We want visitors of all ages to feel like they’ve stepped back in time,” David smiles. “Kids will be able to touch, see, and even hear the history that built Cornelius.”

More than a collection of displays, the museum will also host community events and school programs, becoming a cultural anchor in the town’s walkable downtown district. “This will be a gathering place,” David explains. “A spot where families can learn together and where our veterans’ contributions are recognized alongside our agricultural heritage.” Community members can join the effort through donations, volunteer opportunities, and upcoming programs. With construction underway and a late spring 2027 opening anticipated, the Cornelius History Museum is steadily becoming a reality, poised to celebrate the town’s rich history while creating a vibrant destination for generations to come. w

David Hodson is CEO of Because You Served, which was cofounded by him and his son, Jarrett Hodson. MONTH

YOUR HEALTH. YOUR STORY. Every Chapter. MORE AWARENESS. BRIGHTER TOMORROWS.

Diabetes Awareness Is Women’s Health Awareness. W H Y P R I M A RY C A R E & GY N B OT H M AT T E R

Diabetes and prediabetes can affect women at every stage of life — from your reproductive years to menopause and beyond. Prevention, screening, and ongoing care matter, and you don’t have to do it alone. A trusted primary care provider and a GYN work together to support your whole health, because your health story deserves a team.

Know your numbers.

Know your risks.

Know your care team.

Understand your blood sugar and A1c.

Learn how life stages, family history, and more can affect you.

Partner with both a primary care provider and a GYN for complete, coordinated care.

Women’s health is a whole-life journey. Blood sugar, hormones, pregnancy history, menopause, and preventive care are all connected — and a strong relationship with both a primary care provider and a GYN can help you stay healthier at every stage. Diabetes and prediabetes don’t just affect one part of your life — they can influence your heart, hormones, reproductive health, bone health, and more. Women experience unique risk factors, including hormonal changes, a history of gestational diabetes, and the transition through menopause. That’s why comprehensive care matters. A primary care provider and a GYN each bring an important perspective. Your primary care provider can help monitor blood sugar, assess overall health risks, and coordinate preventive care. Your GYN understands your reproductive health, hormone changes, and how conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), pregnancy, and

menopause can influence your risk for type 2 diabetes.

THE FACTS Prediabetes often has no symptoms.

Many women don’t know they have it.

Together, they can help you get the right screenings at the right time, create a personalized plan, and support you through every chapter.

A history of gestational diabetes matters later in life.

“Knowing your numbers is important. Being known by your care team is even better.”

It can increase your risk for type 2 diabetes.

You are more than a number. Regular conversations with a trusted primary care provider and a GYN can help you understand your risks, stay informed, and feel empowered to make the best choices for your health — today and for the future.

Preventive care can help catch risk early.

Regular screening, healthy habits, and ongoing care can make a big difference.

NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS:

HOPE

ACROSS LAKE NORMAN ONE AFTERNOON, AS THE ADA JENKINS CENTER TEAM was wrapping up for the day, a Care Coordinator shared an urgent request. A client battling cancer needed just $190 to keep the utilities from being disconnected. Without "Every act of electricity, access to the breathing generosity machine that was relied on wouldn’t work, the medication needed helps create a could not be refrigerated, and community where the food that was secured might spoil. Unfortunately, emergency families can move assistance funds had already beyond immediate been exhausted. That evening, the story was shared at a community event. A woman listening quietly approached afterward and said, “I would like to pay that utility bill. If someone ever needs that type of help again, please call me.”

As preparations begin for the next tax season, Ada Jenkins Center is seeking volunteers to serve as tax preparers and greeters. No prior tax experience is required, and training begins in December. Volunteers make a direct impact by helping neighbors access refunds they have earned and strengthen their financial stability. Community members can also support local families at AJC’s Food Fight on November 14. This fun and impactful event brings together local chefs, restaurants, businesses, and supporters to raise funds that help provide food, financial assistance, educational opportunities, and other critical services for families in our community.

challenges and build a brighter future."

In moments like these, neighbors become lifelines. Stories like this happen every day at Ada Jenkins Center. Behind every request is a person, a family, or a child facing challenges that can feel overwhelming. Thanks to the generosity of our community, those neighbors are not facing hardship alone. Last year, Ada Jenkins Center served 6,311 individuals across the region. The food pantry provided food for 7,951 visits, helping families stretch their budgets during a time of rising costs. More than $441,000 in financial assistance helped neighbors remain housed, keep utilities connected, and access childcare. Our educational programs supported 89 students in after-school learning and another 59 students through summer camp opportunities.

28 N O V E M B E R 2 0 2 6

One of the most powerful tools for financial stability is Free Tax Prep Meck. During the most recent tax season, volunteers helped residents secure nearly $2.4 million in federal refunds and more than $923,000 in tax preparation savings for clients. These refunds often provide families with the resources needed to catch up on bills, build savings, or invest in their futures.

As we enter the season of gratitude, Ada Jenkins Center is reminded daily that our greatest strength is the neighbors who step forward to help one another. Whether through volunteering, attending Food Fight, or supporting a family in crisis, every act of generosity helps create a community where families can move beyond immediate challenges and build a brighter future. Together, we are proving that when one neighbor struggles, an entire community can rise to help. w

HEALTH H AV I N G H A D T H E P R I V I L E G E O F being the dentist for countless patients, I have been witness to the advancements of dentistry that have really improved the quality of life for so many people—most specifically, dental implants. The first titanium dental implant was placed in a human in 1965. Since then, more research and refinement has taken place to allow for greater

Unfortunately, there are situations where too much deterioration has occurred to the point of the tooth not being able to be saved or, if attempted, the final result would not be a long-lasting solution. Both scenarios end up with the tooth being removed. For many individuals, a missing tooth may be solely a cosmetic concern. But in reality, a multitude of negative issues involving your jawbone structure, chewing efficiency, speech, and long-term oral health can occur. There are several ways to rehabilitate the area of the missing tooth or teeth. One outcome involves removable dentures that, if fabricated well, can absolutely bring value to a patient. However, even the best denture will only give 20-30% of the bite force that a human would with a full set of natural teeth; subsequently, I always ask patients who are interested in conventional dentures the following: “If you go to a restaurant and open up the menu, do you choose things based on what you want to eat or what you can eat?

Any time a tooth is removed, the area where the tooth used to occupy and function shrinks and degrades due to lack of stimulation. This can occur drastically within the first year after the removal of a tooth with no implant replacement. Dental implants are not limited to single teeth and can play a very important role even for patients who wear dentures. The biocompatible titanium material that dental implants are made from can preserve the bone density in the area of the missing tooth/teeth. Moreover, by having the denture be “attached” to the dental implants, the bite force load from the patient is improved, sometimes upwards of 60%. Dental implants can also benefit patients missing one or several teeth. Not only can you avoid potentially unnecessary dental treatment on the neighboring teeth, but you can also halt the progression of bone loss. The bite force of implants replacing single or several teeth is equal to or approaching natural teeth. However, implants must still be maintained and cared for with routine dental checkups and examinations to ensure proper gum and bone health and continued long-term success. Ultimately, it is up to the patient to make the final decision. w

“Diamonds are a girl’s best friend,” the old song goes, and while a beautiful diamond certainly has a way of capturing the heart, some of life’s most precious treasures can’t be measured in carats, cut, or clarity. Kim Gregory Clendenin, president of R. Gregory Jewelers in Statesville, understands that better than most. Alongside her husband, Matt, she has spent many years developing a discerning eye for what makes a diamond, a piece of jewelry, or a cherished keepsake truly special. Jewelry may sparkle, but the memories we attach to it are what make it priceless. Since Kim’s father, Rick Gregory, opened the store in 1981, R. Gregory Jewelers has built something far more enduring than a jewelry business. The family has cultivated decades of relationships, trust, and loyalty. In Kim’s hands, her father’s business has become an heirloom of its own.

“He had a vision,” Kim reflects, “for a store that would offer exceptional jewelry and customer service while making everyone who walked through the door feel special. I have had the opportunity of learning from my dad and seeing his passion come to life.”

In 2025, Kim was selected to serve on the Independent Jewelers Organization’s Buyers Review Board, one of only five independent jewelers chosen nationally for the board. It was another reflection of the knowledge and expertise she has developed over a lifetime in the jewelry industry.

Kim and Matt married in 2002. Two years later, Matt joined the family business after Rick recognized qualities in his sonin-law that reminded him of himself. The partnership proved to be a natural fit. When Rick died in 2013, Kim and Matt found themselves carrying forward not only a business, but a deeply personal family legacy. “It has been such a privilege,” Kim says, “to continue to build on the relationships that Dad formed and create our own new ones along the way. Customers who first came to R. Gregory for an engagement ring now return years later for an anniversary or christening gift ... it’s an honor to be a part of those moments.” Much like Kim’s own upbringing, her children have grown up alongside the business, experiencing firsthand the joys and demands of being part of a family enterprise, from accompanying their parents to events to answering the phones. For Kim, the connection between family, faith, and work remains at the heart of it all. “We truly are a family business, and it’s hard to separate work from family, so we just roll with it,” she smiles. “And we put our faith in God.” For all of the history rooted in Statesville, Kim’s work has taken her far beyond North Carolina. Antwerp, Belgium, is one of the world’s great centers of the diamond trade, and Kim and Matt travel there at least twice a year to hand-select diamonds directly from cutters. Before each trip, Kim works with customers to understand exactly what they are looking for. Then she and Matt take that vision with them in search of the right stone.

More recently, the store was accepted as a member of the American Gem Society, an honor Kim considers especially meaningful. “Being accepted as a member of the American Gem Society is one of the things I’m most proud of. AGS is known for its commitment to ethics, education, and the highest standards in the jewelry industry.”

“For me,” she says, “one of my favorite parts is working with our customers before our trips ... there is something wonderfully personal about that process. They are sharing their deepest feelings with me, and I don’t take that for granted.”

Kim’s passion for her work is matched by a deep sense of gratitude and faith, both of which have helped guide her through some of life’s most challenging seasons. Losing her father, whom she describes as her “rock,” was very difficult and unexpected; then, just last year, she faced another profound loss with the passing of her mother after a long, progressive illness. Balancing her roles as a business owner, mother, and caregiver during that time profoundly changed her perspective. “Through it all,” she shares, “I learned to lean on my faith in a new way and felt the closeness of Jesus like never before.”

In Kim’s hands, her father’s business has become an heirloom of its own.

Another important part of Kim’s work has little to do with buying something new; instead, she helps customers transform inherited or sentimental jewelry into pieces that fit their lives today while preserving the history of the original. “I love sitting with clients and creating jewelry from their own collection,” Kim says. “An outdated ring becomes a new pendant. Emeralds from their grandmother’s jewelry can be incorporated into a necklace and earring set. Items that have spent years tucked away in a jewelry box can be worn again.”

Today, Kim’s relationship with God has become an even greater part of her life and sense of purpose. She now serves as the director of an outreach ministry in London, UK, where she spends her summers connecting with others and sharing the message of the Gospel. Her experiences have taught her to trust that life’s path may not always unfold as planned, but that there is purpose in the journey. As she often reminds herself, “It’s not my plan, but His.” w L A K E N O R M A N wO M A N . C O M

AN ESTATE OF MIND FIVE IN A SERIES OF SIX COLUMNS

PROTECTING YOUR ASSETS FROM THIRD PARTIES M E G D. G O L D S T E I N , AT TO R N E Y-AT- L AW

PROFESSIONALS, INCLUDING DOCTORS

and lawyers, executives, entrepreneurs, and high wealth individuals are often concerned about exposure of their assets to claims of creditors. Creditors’ claims arise from numerous unexpected events. While driving and talking on your cell phone, you run through a red light, smash into the side of another car and severely injure three passengers, all resulting in a large judgment for damages against you. Or your business has defaulted on a large bank loan that you personally guaranteed. Your unprotected assets are now at risk of seizure for payment of the judgment or satisfaction of the guaranty. Estate planners assist their clients with asset protection planning. This planning does not involve hiding assets or making fraudulent or illegal transfers. This planning involves recognized legal techniques that may shield assets from a judgment creditor but must be implemented well in advance of the possibility of future creditor problems. Some common mechanisms to be considered by North Carolina residents include:

1 JOINT ASSETS.

Real property titled in the joint name of spouses is subject to their joint creditors, not sole creditors. However, North Carolina law presumes bank and brokerage accounts titled in a couple’s joint names are owned equally but that presumption may not apply in all circumstances. A doctor residing in North Carolina who retitles her account into the sole name of her non-working spouse will not be shielded from her creditors.

2 IRAS & CONTRACTUAL DEATH BENEFITS.

It is wise to maximize your taxdeferred contributions to qualified retirement accounts. Subject to limitations, regular IRAs, Roth IRAs, and qualified retirement accounts including, but not limited to, pension plans, 401(k) plans and SEPs are not subject to creditors.

3 LIFE INSURANCE.

Generally, life insurance payable to a beneficiary is exempt from creditors. Excess cash in whole, universal, and variable life insurance policies provides excellent asset protection for the internal cash value.

4 LIMITED LIABILITY

COMPANIES AND LIMITED PARTNERSHIPS. Creditors may

obtain “charging orders” over interests in limited liability companies and limited partnerships. These orders limit the creditor’s rights to distributions made by the entity, thereby shielding the assets owned by the entity from the member’s or partner’s separate creditors. Interests in such entities owned by spouses and children carry this same protection.

5 TRUSTS. Spendthrift trusts established for the benefit of your spouse and children may be structured to protect trust assets and inheritances from their creditors and divorced spouses. 6 GIFTS. You should utilize your

gift tax annual exclusion ($19,000/donor/ donee in 2026) to make gifts to family members provided you do not retain control.

7 LIABILITY INSURANCE.

Professionals are often considered “deep pockets” in our litigious society. You should periodically review your liability and umbrella insurance.

8 PRE- AND POSTMARITAL AGREEMENTS.

In pre- and post-marital agreements, spouses may waive equitable distribution and alimony in the event of a later divorce and interests in property of the spouse who is the first to die.

Other strategies need to be considered in light of your own tax, financial and personal circumstances. Of course, no plan should be implemented without advice from competent counsel. The information provided in this article is not intended to give legal or tax advice.

Meg D. Goldstein, Attorney-at-Law, has 45 years of extensive legal experience and is well-versed in estate planning, trust and estate administration, fiduciary relationships, charitable giving, and the formation and continuation of business and charitable entities. Her priority and passion are to ensure that each client's specific needs and desires are addressed in a well-presented plan to limit future controversies between family members and business associates.

creating a home F O R T H E S E A S O N YO U ’ R E I N

I’ve always believed there’s a big difference between living in a house and loving where you live. Over the years at Sweet Dreams, some of my favorite moments haven’t simply been helping someone choose a beautiful sofa or bedroom set; it’s been getting to know the why behind the room we’re helping create. Our homes are the backdrop to so much of our lives. And as life changes, our homes should be able to change with us. Here are a few things I’ve learned that can make creating a home feel a little less overwhelming and a lot more personal.

Start with how you live, not how you want the room to look. Before choosing a sofa, dining table, or bedroom set, think about how the room is actually used. Do you entertain often? Are the kids constantly coming and going? Is the space now used by two people instead of a family of five? Furniture should fit the way you live now, not the way you lived ten years ago. Maybe the kids have left for college, you’re furnishing your first home together, or a parent is moving in with you. Start by asking, “What do I need this room to do for me now?”

Pay attention to scale and furniture placement. One of the biggest challenges I hear is, “I know what I like when I see it. I just don’t know how to put it all together.” That’s where scale and placement can make such a difference. A piece of furniture can be beautiful on its own and still feel wrong in a particular room if it’s too large, too small, or positioned in a way that makes the space difficult to use. Before purchasing, measure the room, consider traffic patterns, and think about how much space you need to move comfortably around each piece. Sometimes the answer isn’t adding something new. It’s moving what you already have.

42 N O V E M B E R 2 0 2 6

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Bringing a room together can feel overwhelming, especially when there are so many options. A fresh set of eyes can help you see possibilities you may not have considered and, just as importantly, help you narrow down the choices. At Sweet Dreams, our design team can meet with you in our showroom or come to your home. We can look at measurements, furniture placement, scale, colors, fabrics, and finishing pieces and then create digital design boards and layouts to help you visualize the possibilities. You don’t have to have everything figured out before you ask for help. That’s our job! w

DIABETES & womens health: '

THE CONNECTIONS WE SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT

Diabetes Is More Common Than You Think

F R O M R E P R O D U C T I V E H E A LT H T O menopause and beyond, understanding diabetes risk—and maintaining strong relationships with your primary care and OB/GYN providers—can make a lasting difference.

Millions of Americans live with diabetes or prediabetes, often without noticeable symptoms. Prediabetes occurs when blood sugar is elevated but hasn't reached the threshold for diabetes. Early identification matters. For many people, type 2 diabetes can be delayed or prevented through sustainable lifestyle changes, appropriate screening, and ongoing medical care.

According to One Health’s Lizeth Duenas, MD, Family Medicine Physician & Board Certified Diabetologist, “Women often spend so much of their lives caring for others that their own health becomes a secondary priority. This November, during National Diabetes Awareness Month, we want to remind every woman that caring for herself is essential. “ Diabetes can affect women at every stage of life, from reproductive years and pregnancy to menopause and beyond. Through early detection, healthy lifestyle choices, and personalized medical care, we can prevent or delay type 2 Diabetes and help women living with diabetes thrive. A woman's annual OB/GYN visit and primary care appointment may seem like entirely different conversations. One might focus on reproductive health or menopause; the other on blood pressure, cholesterol, or blood sugar. Yet these conversations are more closely connected than many women realize.

Women's Health Brings Unique Considerations A woman's diabetes risk can change throughout her life. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with insulin resistance. Gestational diabetes, even when it resolves after childbirth, increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later. During menopause, hormonal and metabolic changes can also influence blood sugar regulation. These experiences aren't isolated events. They're important chapters in a woman's overall health story.

Dr. Duenas adds, “Our goal is to empower women with the knowledge, tools, and support they need to take charge of their health. Because when women prioritize their well-being, they strengthen not only themselves but also the families and communities they love.”

Five Conversations Worth Having At your next appointment, consider asking:

Healthcare often focuses on numbers: A1c, blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight. These measurements are essential, but they don't tell the entire story. They don't reveal the demands of family, work, aging, or the challenges of making lasting lifestyle changes. At OneHealth, we believe exceptional care begins with listening, explaining clearly, and including patients in decisions. Strong relationships with primary care and OB/ GYN providers help transform isolated appointments into a lifelong partnership. Knowing your numbers is important. Being known by your healthcare team is even better. w

A perfect FIT “I grew up in the foothills of Western North Carolina and attended Louise Harkey School of Nursing in Concord where I earned my associate degree. I have always been naturally empathetic and knew I wanted a career that would allow me to help others, so nursing felt like the perfect fit. I went on to earn my Bachelor of Science in Nursing through Winston-Salem State University, followed by my master’s degree from South University.”

inspiration COMES IN MANY FORMS “My daughter inspires me with her intelligence, work ethic, and love of learning; my husband encourages me to stay disciplined, whether that means going to the gym, tackling a new project, or learning something new. My mother inspires me with the love she has poured into our family, and my patients continually inspire me through their determination to improve their health. I am especially inspired by those who keep moving forward despite challenges. My own experiences with pregnancy, weight struggles, and menopause have also shaped the way I care for others. After three miscarriages, my daughter was conceived through IVF and born nine weeks early by emergency C-section after becoming wrapped in her umbilical cord. It was a terrifying time, but it was also a joyous time. I learned what truly loving someone unconditionally means.”

LOVES OF MY life “My greatest joys in life are my family and the people I am fortunate enough to share it with. I have a daughter who graduated from Western Carolina University and plans to pursue a career in medicine, as well as two stepsons, both of whom have full-time careers in maintenance management. I am incredibly proud of all three of them and love watching each of them pursue their own path. Another great blessing in my life has been my marriage to my husband of 14 years. In him, I gained not only a husband who loves me with all his heart but also a best friend and a wonderful stepdad to my daughter. In our family, we affectionately call him “Diva Dad,” a title that says a lot about the special relationship they share.” GRATITUDE, growth, AND GRACE “One of my favorite quotes is by Maya Angelou: ‘The real difficulty is to overcome how you think about yourself.’ This really resonates with me. As we go through the stages of life, our perception of ourselves changes many times. When we are young, we are trying to figure out who we are; as we grow, we may feel like we have a pretty good handle on things; and as we age, our perception of ourselves can change yet again. At every stage, it can be easy to see our imperfections and dwell on them. Instead, let us step back and appreciate where we have been, where we are headed, and all that we have accomplished along the way.” w

Women are taught in childhood to be agreeable, accommodating, nurturing, and emotionally responsible. They’re taught to anticipate needs, avoid conflict, and make sure everyone else is okay. They were seldom ever conditioned to look after their own needs. Meanwhile, most of us men learned to not even consider how the magic is made; it just was. So, when November arrives, women don’t just prepare for the holidays ... they prepare for the emotional Olympics.

THE EMOTIONAL LABOR OF THE HOLIDAYS: WHY WOMEN CARRY IT ALL

(and how to stop)

AS NOVE MBE R A R R I V ES, something subtle begins to happen inside countless women everywhere. The calendar fills up and the emotional weight of the holidays starts pressing down long before the first string of lights goes up. Women feel it in their shoulders, their sleep, their breath, their bandwidth. It’s not just stress; it’s emotional labor. Many women don’t realize they’re carrying it because it’s normally just called exhaustion. And here’s the truth: you aren’t exhausted because your load is too much; you’re exhausted because you carry the load for everyone around you as well. Emotional labor is the invisible work of holding everything together.

It’s remembering who likes what, who will react how, and even preventing conflicts before they start. It’s anticipating feelings, managing expectations, and absorbing tensions. It’s the mental load of planning, hosting, gifting, cooking, and coordinating – or all of it. All while regulating everyone emotionally. By mid-November, many women begin to feel a familiar dread. They love the holidays but they know what’s coming: making sure everyone feels included, comfortable, understood, and connected; meeting family obligations. They know they’ll be the ones remembering every detail no one else notices. This isn’t a flaw. It’s conditioning.

Dave Jones is the founder of Captive Coaching and Empowerment. For years he has helped good-hearted women overcome drama and trauma to build confidence, set healthy boundaries, and step into their power. His passion for this work is deeply personal, inspired by the struggles of the women in his own life—especially his mom and sister. He’s also the host of the weekly podcast Her Discovered Power and now shares his insights in a monthly column by the same name in Lake Norman Woman Magazine.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, EMOTIONAL DISCOVERY, & PERFORMANCE COACHING

Thirty years ago, my wife’s stress muscle would flare up under her shoulder blades starting at Thanksgiving and wouldn’t go away until after Christmas. I didn’t realize then she needed help and not a massage of the shoulders, and she didn’t know help was allowed to be asked. You are allowed to enjoy the holidays without sacrificing yourself. So, how about this season you set boundaries as the start of your new self. Say “no” when you want to. Feel the strength in requiring others to help. Delegate like the power-managers you are. You don’t have to be the emotional backbone of every gathering. You don’t have to anticipate everybody’s feelings. You don’t have to prevent every conflict. You don’t have to carry the emotional weight of grown adults. This November, I want you to remember one thing: emotional labor is not your obligation. It’s a learned role and you can unlearn it. You can reclaim your energy, your boundaries, your joy, and your presence. The holidays don’t have to be heavy. They can be warm, connected, meaningful, and peaceful—not because you carried everything, but because you finally stopped.

Let those new boundaries be your presents to you!

Through coaching and courses, Captive Coaching & Empowerment is committed to helping women live more empowered, intentional lives. E-mail David@captivecoachingandempowerment.com or visit www.captivecoachingandempowerment.com.

Dressing or Stuffing?

T H E G R E AT T H A N K S G I V I N G D E B AT E :

INGREDIENTS

1 loaf of Cornbread (sometimes called a Johnny cake), cut into cubes 2 loaves of Crusty Bread (I did 1 Ciabatta + 1 French Bread), cut into cubes Olive Oil, as needed

1 Large White Onion, chopped 2 Garlic Cloves, minced 6 cups Chicken Broth 1 tsp. Dried Basil 1 tbsp. Fresh Thyme 1 tsp. Salt

½ cup Butter 4 stalks Celery, chopped

1 tsp. Fresh Cracked Black Pepper

1 Carrot, shredded & chopped

½ bunch Fresh Parsley, chopped

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat oven to 425F. Cut cornbread into small cubes and spread them onto a baking sheet. Toast in the oven until dried and crumbly, about 5 minutes.

1

Remove cornbread and cut two loaves

2 of crusty bread into cubes. Toss cubes with 1 - 2 tbsp. olive oil and place flat on 2 baking sheets. Toast in the oven until browned and crisp, about 5 - 8 minutes. Make sure to flip halfway through. butter in a large skillet. Add celery, 3 Melt onions, carrot, and garlic, then sauté for 5 minutes. Next you’ll add chicken broth, dried basil, fresh thyme, ½ the chopped parsley, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer. OPTIONAL ADD-INS:

So, what’s the difference between Thanksgiving dressing and stuffing? To be short and to the point, dressing is prepared and baked in a casserole dish while stuffing is the exact same thing but stuffed and cooked inside of the turkey. I personally prefer dressing, but this recipe works for both options. I also love the textures of mixing both cornbread and a crusty Italian bread when making dressing. The cornbread gives you this fluffy texture (similar to Stove Top), while the thick, toasted chunks of Italian bread give the dressing a hearty bite. You’re going to love the combo, I promise.

56 N O V E M B E R 2 0 2 6

I almost always include a pound of ground sausage to this recipe. Simply cook it separately, drain, and add to the mix after step #4. Some folks prefer fruit in their stuffing (I’m an eitherway kind of gal); dried cranberries or cherries would work nicely here. Like above, add these to the mix after step #4. Rosemary is a nice addition for some extra herbal oomph. Add a 1/2 tbsp. of fresh rosemary at step #3 if you have some on hand. To make this fully vegetarian, substitute the chicken broth for vegetable.

Place all the toasted bread cubes

4 in a large mixing bowl. Slowly add broth mixture, in batches, to the cubes and toss until combined. Depending on your moisture preference, you may or may not use all of the broth mixture. Taste and adjust salt + pepper, if preferred. Transfer dressing to a large

5 casserole dish. Turn heat down to 375F and bake for 25 - 30 minutes. Sprinkle with remaining parsley before serving. w
