FATHER’S the

HEART

Rediscovering Connection, Purpose, and Love

WHAT DOES IT MEAN

for a man to truly enjoy life? How do you become a better father, partner, or friend? And how do you help the people you care about experience more peace, purpose, and joy? These are not just philosophical questions. They are practical life questions that shape the way men live, lead, and relate to others.

LKN expert

Tom Clark is the

It’s crucial to explore these ideas through the lens of connection: connection to others, connection to self, and connection to God the Father. Disconnection rarely happens all at once. Instead, it tends to grow slowly through worry, anxiety, and fear. Over time, those emotions can affect relationships, cloud identity, and leave life feeling scattered or unsteady. Here are some fundamental principles to help you perfect love and cast out fear:

He shares scripturebased perspectives on family, identity, and purpose, with a focus on helping others overcome fear and rediscover connection through a father’s heart.

Pay attention to your internal state.

Unchecked worry and stress don’t stay isolated ... they influence how you speak, react, and relate to others. Learning to recognize and manage anxiety is a key part of emotional health.

Prioritize meaningful connection over isolation.

Strong relationships are one of the most important predictors of longterm well-being. Make time for family, friendships, and honest conversation.

Understand the influence of fatherhood.

Whether present, absent, biological, or spiritual, father figures shape identity and confidence. Many men carry unspoken gaps that influence how they show up in life.

Lead with love instead of fear.

Fear often drives control, anger, or withdrawal. Love creates space for growth and healing.

Reframe how you see challenges.

Life events, cultural shifts, and personal struggles can look very different when viewed through a grounded, values-based perspective rather than reaction or emotion.

Strengthen your sense of purpose.

Men thrive when they understand not just what they do, but why they do it. Purpose brings direction and resilience during difficult seasons.

Invest in the next generation. Whether through parenting, mentoring, or influence, men play a powerful role in shaping emotional and spiritual stability in others.

Understanding Hair Loss In Men

For many men, the first sign is subtle: a slightly higher hairline in the mirror or a thinner patch on the crown. While hair loss can feel alarming, it’s also incredibly common and in many cases a natural part of aging. The most frequent cause is androgenic alopecia, better known as male-pattern baldness. This hereditary condition affects roughly 50 million men in the United States, and about half of men will notice significant hair loss by age 50.

WHY HAIR LOSS HAPPENS

Male-pattern baldness occurs when hair follicles become sensitive to a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a byproduct of testosterone. Over time, DHT gradually shrinks these follicles, causing hair to grow thinner and shorter until growth stops altogether. Genetics play the biggest role. If baldness runs in your family, you’re more likely to experience it yourself. Age also increases the likelihood, and some men begin noticing early signs as young as their twenties or thirties. However, not all hair loss is purely genetic. Stressful life events, illness, nutritional deficiencies, certain medications, and scalp conditions can also trigger temporary thinning or shedding.

RECOGNIZING THE PATTERN

Male-pattern hair loss typically follows predictable stages. It often begins with a receding hairline near the temples, sometimes forming an “M” shape. Another common pattern is thinning at the crown of the head. Over time, these areas may expand and eventually meet. Because the process is gradual, many men adapt to the changes without much concern. For others, the emotional impact can be significant. Hair can be closely tied to identity, youthfulness, and confidence, which is why hair loss can feel more personal than medical.

WHAT CAN BE DONE?

Services in the field of hair restoration can include a vast array of non-surgical options such as human hair replacement systems, synthetic and human hair custom wigs, as well as hair toppers and extensions designed to seamlessly blend with your existing hair. Naturally-based trichological hair and scalp care, along with low-level laser hair therapy treatments are designed to help slow hair loss and optimize scalp health which supports regrowth in individuals in the early to moderate stages of hair loss. At Lake Norman Hair Loss Solutions, we offer exclusive, advanced hair replacement systems developed through international research laboratories, reflecting the growing range of medical-grade technologies now used to address hair loss concerns. The exciting aspect of these services is our ability to deliver instant results for our guests with an easy 90 minute appointment. Imagine turning back your appearance clock 10 or 15 years, enabling you to walk out into the world every day with maximum confidence again. No matter your degree of hair loss, Lake Norman Hair Loss Solutions has a solution for you. It all starts with a free, zeropressure private consultation.

Hair can be closely tied to identity, youthfulness, and confidence, which is why hair loss can feel more personal than medical.

SLEEP APNEA

The Silent Disruptor of Rest, Health, & Energy

SLEEP APNEA IS ONE OF THOSE conditions that often hides in plain sight— especially in men. It’s far more common than many realize and frequently goes undiagnosed for years. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airway repeatedly collapses during sleep, causing brief pauses in breathing. These interruptions can happen dozens or even hundreds of times a night, preventing the body from reaching deep, restorative sleep. The result isn’t just snoring, it’s fragmented sleep that can affect nearly every system in the body.

Men are statistically more likely to develop sleep apnea due to a combination of anatomy, hormones, and lifestyle factors. A thicker neck circumference, higher rates of weight gain in the upper body, and airway structure all play a role. Left untreated, sleep apnea can contribute to serious health issues including high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke risk, diabetes, and chronic fatigue. Many men don’t realize that constant tiredness, irritability, or difficulty concentrating may actually be signs of disrupted breathing at night rather than just “getting older” or being overworked.

WHY IT MATTERS MORE THAN YOU THINK

Sleep apnea doesn’t just affect nighttime rest. It impacts long-term health and daily performance. Poor oxygen flow during sleep puts stress on the cardiovascular system and prevents the body from properly recovering overnight. Over time, this can increase inflammation, elevate blood pressure, and contribute to metabolic changes. Even mild cases can affect energy, motivation, and mental clarity, often in subtle ways that are easy to overlook.

WHAT CAN HELP

The good news is that sleep apnea is highly treatable. Options include lifestyle changes such as weight management, reducing alcohol intake before bed, and improving sleep posture. Medical treatments like CPAP therapy are highly effective, and for some patients, oral appliances provided through dental professionals can help keep the airway open during sleep.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Sleep apnea is a serious health condition that deserves attention, especially for men who may brush off symptoms as stress or aging. The earlier it’s identified, the more effectively it can be treated. Better sleep isn’t just about feeling rested; it’s about protecting long-term health, improving daily energy, and enhancing overall quality of life.

WAXING THE CITY HUNTERSVILLE

A LITTLE BACKGROUND

I was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Roanoke, Virginia, from the age of 5 ... two very different places that helped shape me early on. I attended Howard University for undergraduate school and later earned my graduate degree from the University of South Carolina. I’m also a proud father of four (Miles-Elon, Maya-USC, Amaya-App State, and KelsyElon) and watching them grow into successful, grounded adults has been one of the greatest joys of my life.

A COMPETITIVE SPIRIT

I spent over 25 years in corporate America working in sales and marketing with brands like Duracell, Clorox, Newell, Del Monte Pet, and TTi Floorcare. As a competitive athlete through college, I’ve always had a drive to win, and sales gave me the perfect outlet for that energy. It taught me how to compete, how to connect, and how to understand people— skills that still serve me today. In many ways, the customers I worked with then are the same people we serve now, just in a more personal setting.

PERSPECTIVE, PURPOSE, AND COMMUNITY

My grandparents raised me, and their influence still guides how I move through life. They taught me the importance of hard work, treating people with dignity, and giving back whenever you can. Those lessons have carried through every chapter—from earning my MBA while working full-time and raising a family, to building a business today. I’ve lived in this area since 2005, and what keeps me here is the people and the sense of community.

LESSONS NOT LOSSES

Life has its share of challenges, but I’ve come to see them not as losses, but as lessons. Faith has always been a foundation for me and so has the mindset of continuing to compete. I just try to win more than I lose. I believe success comes down to three things: perspective, patience, and persistence. Those traits build wisdom, grace, and grit. If I could give my younger self advice, it would be simple: live with grace. Give it to yourself, extend it to others, and understand that life isn’t always neat, but it’s always teaching you something.

A PATH ALIGNED WITH PURPOSE

PHYSICIAN

SOUTHERN ONCOLOGY SPECIALISTS

I grew up in a coastal city in South India where my early life was shaped by family values, community, and a quiet curiosity about how medicine could change lives. My father was an anesthesiologist, so medicine was always close to home, even if I didn’t fully commit to it until later in high school. Once I did, it felt natural—like a path aligned with purpose. I eventually moved to the United States for medical training, carrying with me a deep respect for the profession and a desire to serve patients on a personal level.

SHAPED OVER TIME

While medicine has been part of my world for as long as I can remember, becoming a medical oncologist was a decision that grew over time. After completing medical school, I pursued advanced training and built a career that has now spanned more than 25 years, most recently in the Pittsburgh area before relocating to Lake Norman. Along the way, I came to understand that oncology is as much about connection as it is about clinical expertise. Each patient brings a unique story, and it is a privilege to walk alongside them during some of life’s most profound moments.

THE NEXT CHAPTER

Moving to Lake Norman was both a professional and personal decision. After decades in practice, I felt ready for a change in environment and pace. The natural beauty of the area, its greenways, and the warmer climate all played a role in drawing me here. I’m married, and my wife and I have two children in their late 20s, both living and working in New York City. Family continues to be my anchor through every stage of life.

FAITH, PERSISTENCE, AND DISCIPLINE

Sports like cricket and volleyball taught me early lessons in discipline, teamwork, and resilience— qualities that continue to shape how I practice medicine today. Oncology is a challenging field, but it is also deeply meaningful. On difficult days, I think about my patients and the strength they show in the face of illness; that perspective keeps me grounded. Faith, persistence, and discipline have guided my journey. One of the greatest rewards of my work is seeing patients respond to treatment and regain hope ... that is what continues to bring meaning to everything I do.

PRIDE, DISCIPLINE, AND TEAMWORK

I grew up in Hendersonville, North Carolina, where life was simple, steady, and rooted in community. My parents taught me to work hard, treat people with respect, and always show up when it matters. Those lessons have stayed with me throughout my life. At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I fully embraced being a Tar Heel. I played in the band, never missed a game during the Dean Smith era, and developed a deep sense of pride, discipline, and teamwork that still guides how I live and work today.

FINDING THE RIGHT PATH

Dentistry wasn’t something I planned from an early age, but it became the right fit over time. I wanted a career where I could use my hands, solve problems, and genuinely help people. Once I entered dental school, everything clicked. After graduation, I served nearly four years in the United States Navy as a dentist for the Marines. That experience shaped me in lasting ways, teaching discipline, resilience, and the importance of leading by example. It reinforced a simple truth: people are counting on you, so you show up and do your job well.

BUILDING A LIFE IN LAKE NORMAN

When it came time to settle down, my wife Susanne and I chose the Lake Norman area. It felt like the right place to build both a practice and a life. More than 30 years later, it still feels like home. Susanne and I were married in 1990, and she joined the practice in 1998. We’ve built everything together— our work, our family, and our life. We have three daughters who keep us grounded, proud, and laughing. These days, I unwind simply: time with family, time on the beach, and catching a Carolina game when I can.

PRINCIPLES THAT GUIDE ME

My parents were my first example of integrity, and the Navy reinforced it in a powerful way. Do the right thing, even when it’s difficult. That principle has guided me through every stage of my career. Building a dental practice hasn’t come without challenges, but staying focused on people has always kept me steady. At the end of the day, I’m most proud of my family and the trust our patients have placed in us. Dentistry is about relationships, consistency, and doing things the right way, one patient at a time.

ON GETTING HERE

I’ve always believed you don’t really “arrive” anywhere overnight. You build it one day at a time. Sweet Dreams Mattress & Furniture started as a family-driven business, and I’ve been fortunate to grow it alongside my wife, best friend, and business partner, Katy. Over the years, we’ve expanded with the Lake Norman community, but the foundation has stayed the same: show up, work hard, and treat people right.

FAMILY MATTERS

We call it the “Dream Team” because that’s really what it is ... family, friends, and staff all pitching in wherever and whenever they’re needed. It’s very much an “all hands on deck” kind of place, and everyone here is in it together. Katy and I are both involved in the business every day, and we’ve always believed people can tell the difference between something that’s family-run and something corporate. There’s just a different level of care and accountability when it’s personal. Staying family-owned means staying close to the work, close to the team, and close to the customers. At the end of the day, it’s about not losing sight of why we started and building something we’re proud of together.

OUR CUSTOMERS ... OUR HEART

It may sound cliché, but we’re not just selling mattresses, we’re helping people make an investment in their comfort and their health. We mean and feel this deeply and sincerely. Sleep affects everything we do, so we take that responsibility seriously. My approach has always been pretty simple: no pressure, no rush. I want people to feel comfortable asking questions, taking their time, and finding what actually fits their life, not just what’s on the floor.

GRATEFUL FOR OUR COMMUNITY

Lake Norman has been a great place to build a business and raise a family, and I don’t take that for granted. We’ve been fortunate to be recognized by the Chamber of Commerce, but what matters most to me is being part of a community that supports local businesses like ours. For Katy and me, being involved locally isn’t something extra we do, it’s part of who we are. We try to give back where we can and stay connected to the people who have supported us over the years.

BALANCE, ADVENTURE, AND SHOWING UP WHERE IT MATTERS

I’m the proud father of three boys—Jack (19), Patrick (17), and Cooper (12). At the center of my life is family, and everything else tends to orbit around that. I’ve always believed the best version of success is one that leaves room for the people and moments that matter most. I enjoy mountain biking, hiking, skiing, and golfing—anything that gets me outside and moving. Living in the Lake Norman area makes that easy, and we take full advantage of it as a family whenever we can.

FATHERHOOD AND PHILANTHROPY

Being a father is my greatest role, and I genuinely enjoy watching my kids compete, grow, and find their own paths through sports and life. I’ve also always felt a responsibility to give back. I have a philanthropic heart and participate in several community events throughout the year because I believe we’re meant to contribute where we live, not just reside here. That mindset has shaped how I approach both life and work. I’m proud to serve the Lake Norman community and honored to be part of something that feels bigger than any one person.

FINDING THE RIGHT RHYTHM

Over time, I’ve learned that balance isn’t something you stumble into; it’s something you build intentionally. I work hard, but I also make space to play hard with my family. There are so many opportunities to stay active and connected in this area that we rarely sit still for long. That rhythm (work, family, movement, adventure) has become my version of a good life. I honestly think that combination is the secret.

A COMMITMENT TO SERVE

My path into dentistry began with a commitment to serve. I received a scholarship through the United States Army to help pay for dental school, which ultimately led me into military service during a pivotal time. While practicing as a dentist during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, I was exposed to complex oral and facial trauma cases and the reconstructive work being done by oral surgeons. That experience changed my trajectory and inspired me to pursue that specialty.

THE MOMENTS THAT STICK

I am married and the proud father of two children, Erin (17) and Liam (12). Outside of work, I’ve always enjoyed endurance sports—triathlons and races have been a big part of my life. These days, with my children’s schedules, I don’t compete as often, but I still make time to stay active and clear my head. Exercise has always been my way of resetting. I also enjoy cooking, whether it’s testing a new recipe I found online or spending time with friends around the smoker. Those simple moments tend to be the ones that stick.

PERSPECTIVE MANAGEMENT

As a family, we try to prioritize time together whenever possible. Work keeps us busy, but we make a point to steal weekends and travel when we can. We’re very much beach people, and some of our favorite places include Isle of Palms and Aruba, where we can slow down and simply enjoy being together. Those moments away from the daily pace tend to bring a lot of perspective and remind me what really matters.

COSMETIC DENTISTRY OF THE CAROLINAS

A REFINED APPROACH TO MODERN DENTISTRY

My approach to dentistry is centered on a balance of clinical precision, artistry, and patient-centered care. At Cosmetic Dentistry of the Carolinas, we are committed to delivering highly personalized treatment, where every detail matters and every patient experience is intentional. Working alongside me, Dr. Ross Nash brings decades of experience in aesthetic dentistry and has earned national recognition for his contributions to the field. Together, we share a commitment to excellence and to providing care that is both highly skilled and deeply personal. We believe every patient deserves thoughtful, individualized treatment. That means taking the time to understand each case, focusing on detail, and delivering results that enhance both function and aesthetics while maintaining trust, comfort, and consistency at every step of the process.

SHAPED BY SERVICE

My approach to leadership and dentistry has been shaped significantly by my time serving as a naval officer in the U.S. Navy. That experience instilled in me a strong sense of discipline, integrity, structure, and teamwork—values that continue to guide how I live my life every day. I carry those principles into how I lead my team and care for patients, especially when cases are complex or require a high level of coordination. The Navy taught me how to remain steady under pressure and to always prioritize accountability and excellence in everything I do.

EDUCATION AND INNOVATION

I am committed to continually advancing the standard of care we provide by staying at the forefront of modern dental techniques and technology. Dentistry is always evolving, and our patients benefit when we evolve with it. Whether it’s cosmetic enhancements or restorative solutions, we focus on integrating innovative methods that improve both outcomes and the overall patient experience. As I often say, our patients deserve the highest level of care, and that means never becoming stagnant. Education, refinement, and innovation are ongoing priorities for me and our entire clinical team.

PLAY, PAUSE, RESET

I enjoy an active life with my wife, Isabel, and our two dogs, Vlad and Lana. I like tennis, yoga, and golf, and I’m a big fan of watching sports when I have downtime. It’s important to have a full and meaningful life outside the office. It helps me stay grounded and maintain perspective, and gives me a chance to recharge, step away from the demands of dentistry, and appreciate life beyond work in a more intentional and present way.

FROM ROCK HILL ROOTS TO LAKE NORMAN LEADERSHIP

I was born and raised in Rock Hill, South Carolina, graduating from Winthrop University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Management, and I’m a proud dad to an Old English Sheepdog named Henry. In January 1996, I was hired to lead our chamber of commerce with 850 plus business members in the Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Mooresville, and greater Lake Norman region.

STAYING GROUNDED AND HAVING FUN

While I reside in Huntersville during the week, I typically head down to Rock Hill to our family farm (which dates back to 1769) on the weekends. There I watch the cattle grazing on the tall grass, saddle up on Duke our quarter horse or Traveler our Tennessee Walker, and work in the garden I plant each spring. I also love to travel! I was President of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1992-1993 and traveled to 47 states and seven countries representing America’s largest young professionals organization in the nation.

KEEPING UP WITH GROWTH

Many of our challenges come from the unprecedented growth we have experienced but they are a byproduct of our success. It’s also important to keep your focus. Your organization cannot do everything for everybody. So, find your strengths and play to them.

ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

People may ask, “How do you handle a “Bad Day?” I’m not sure there is a “bad day” at Lake Norman but knowing the sun will rise again tomorrow keeps me smiling and grateful. Every new day presents a new opportunity. I try to learn from any bad experience and then move on. It’s important in life to slow down and appreciate the moment. Like the Alabama song from the 90’s, “I’m in a hurry and don’t know why… .” Sometimes you simply need to slow down and enjoy the ride you are on before it comes to a stop—and make no mistake, it will come to a stop so it’s important to enjoy the journey.

I’ve known from a young age that I was called to education. I began my career teaching social studies, and that expanded into leadership. What I love most about my role as Head of School is the blend of education, business, marketing, and vision. My academic journey reflects that passion. I earned my bachelor’s degree from William Peace University, my master’s from Regent University, and my doctorate from Anderson University. Alongside that journey, my wife and I (who I met in high school through our church youth group) are raising our two children, Levi and Rhettley Grace.

BUILDING SOMETHING THAT LASTS

I am incredibly proud of the growth and momentum we’re seeing at Lake Norman Christian School. In a short time, we’ve been able to expand in significant ways, including purchasing 20 acres in Huntersville and beginning construction on a new 40,000-square-foot facility. For me, this work is about more than buildings; it’s about creating something that will have a lasting impact on students, families, and the community. Even on challenging days, I stay motivated by that vision.

THE JOY OF THE JOURNEY

My faith plays a central role in how I approach both life and leadership, shaping the way I make decisions, treat others, and move through both calm and challenging seasons. One line from “Amazing Grace” has always stayed with me, serving as a steady reminder that the same grace that has carried me this far will continue to lead me forward, even when the path ahead isn’t entirely clear. I’ve learned to trust God’s timing rather than trying to force my own, and to look for purpose in every season— whether it feels productive, uncertain, or in between. That perspective has helped me let go of unnecessary stress, enjoy life more fully, and stay grounded in what truly matters.

CHOOSING PEOPLE OVER PROJECTS

I grew up in Jackson, Michigan, and attended Michigan State University, then moved to Boston to begin a master’s at Tufts University while working in research with the USDA. Over time, I realized I was drawn more to people than projects. A pivotal moment came while working with an oncology fellow who encouraged me toward medicine. I attended medical school at the University of the Caribbean, where I also met my wife.

FAMILY, BALANCE, AND THE JOY OF CONNECTION

My wife, also a family medicine physician with One Health in Mooresville, is truly my best friend and the love of my life. Together, we’re raising our two daughters, ages 6 and 2, who keep life joyful and grounded. As a busy family, we’ve learned to prioritize connection, and travel has become our favorite way to do that. We’ve taken annual trips to Europe, creating memories our girls already cherish. Closer to home, you’ll often find us on the tennis court, especially our youngest who happily chases balls and keeps us all smiling.

FINDING THE RIGHT FIT IN LAKE NORMAN

We were at a point in our careers where we knew something needed to change. The healthcare environment we were in no longer supported the level of care we wanted to provide or the fulfillment we were seeking as physicians. When we began exploring opportunities in the Charlotte area, we were intentional about finding a practice rooted in community and physician-led values. One Health immediately stood out. Their commitment to patient-centered care, clinician autonomy, and meaningful relationships aligned perfectly with our vision, making the move to the Lake Norman area an easy and rewarding decision.

SPREAD THE LOVE

ONE HEALTH DENVER, WATERSIDE, AND LAKE NORMAN REGIONAL

I take great pride in being part of a group of providers who are genuinely mission-driven and committed to exceptional community care. I believe in constant self-evaluation and focusing on small, consistent improvements over time. True success, in my view, is built on strong support systems and positive role models. If I could offer advice, it would be simple: care deeply for every person you encounter, and everything else will fall into place.

SELF-CARE

MEN

FIND A DOCTOR

On behalf of all the women in your life, “Just do it!” Do some research, talk to your friends, and find a doctor with whom you’re comfortable. Form a bond and a relationship with your physician, see them regularly, and do what they say.

Ok, Gentlemen, listen up! We know life gets busy and it’s easy to forget to take time for yourself, so we want to encourage you to do just that. We are always talking about women and all they have to juggle, but we are not forgetting our fellas! We don’t take you for granted so please don’t take yourself for granted. Here are a few suggestions on male selfcare from WebMd:

VARY YOUR EXERCISE

Your body can get too comfortable and complacent when you always do the same workout so mix it up a bit … have an age-appropriate variety of aerobics, muscle training, and stretching.

EAT, DRINK, & SLEEP WITH PURPOSE

WebMd advises you focus on nutrients rather than calories and eat a variety of healthy foods … and don’t forget the 8x8 rule for water intake (8, 8oz glasses of water per day). Get at least seven hours of sleep. Men think they can overcome sleep deprivation by exercising or pushing on, regardless of what their body is telling them, but that serves no one … recuperative sleep is critical to good physical and mental health.

KEEP TABS ON YOUR MENTAL STATUS

Think about several things: Are you drinking too much alcohol? Are you paying attention to signs of depression or bipolar symptoms (which are easily and often overlooked in men)? If you have a family history of mental illness, suicide, and/or substance abuse, you should talk to your doctor.

PROSTATE CARE IS ESSENTIAL

The prostate grows as you get older, so you’ll almost certainly have symptoms at some point. A healthy, low-fat diet will reduce the likelihood of prostate growth and may reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Have a discussion with your doctor about your prostate health.

YAY FOR SEX!

When you’re stressed out, not sleeping well, or drinking too much alcohol, your sex life will suffer, and we all know the importance and fragility of the male libido. A healthy libido depends on a healthy lifestyle, and a healthy sex life is a crucial component of a man’s overall health and wellbeing.

SURGERY CLOSE TO HOME

Look forward to every day; do something different every day; do something for yourself every day … whether it’s taking a run or listening to an audiobook or practicing meditation, find your groove and live each day with purpose and gratitude.

HENRY

Each year, as Independence Day approaches and summer settles into its warm, golden rhythm, the Exchange Club of Mooresville/ LKN and the Lowe’s YMCA hosts one of its most powerful traditions: the Field of Flags Summer Celebration. Held annually from July 2 through July 5, this event blends patriotism, remembrance, and community connection into an experience that resonates long after the final flag is taken down.

Field of Flags 2026

The Field of Flags Summer Celebration is more than a holiday tradition, it is a reminder that behind every flag is a story, and behind every story is a community that remembers.

At the center of the celebration is the Field of Flags itself, a breathtaking display of hundreds of American flags standing in precise rows across the lawn of the Lowe’s YMCA. Each flag represents a story, honoring veterans, active-duty military members, and first responders who have made an impact. Walking through the field feels like stepping into a living tribute, where each ripple of fabric carries memory, gratitude, and quiet reverence. Visitors often move slowly, reading dedications, pausing in reflection, or simply taking in the visual power of so many flags gathered in one place.

Beyond its visual beauty and emotional impact, the Field of Flags also serves a greater purpose. Proceeds from the event support the local LKN community with programs and initiatives focused on youth development, Americanism, and community service. You may purchase a flag kit for just $35.00 in honor of a hero, adding a personal thread to the larger tapestry of the display. This can be completed through the Exchange Club’s website OR on site July 2 and 3.

While the flags remain on display throughout the four-day celebration, the highlight for many is the evening of July 3. As the sun begins to set, the ground comes alive with music, laughter, and the unmistakable buzz of a summer gathering. This year’s live concert is Christina & Daniel Eagle from The Voice! Food trucks and beer gardens offer everything from classic barbecue to sweet treats, creating a sensory backdrop that feels both festive and familiar.

As darkness settles, the tone gently shifts. With anticipation building, the night sky becomes a canvas. The Firework Show, presented by Randy Marion, bursts overhead in bright, echoing blooms of color, reflecting off the sea of flags below. It is a moment where celebration and remembrance meet, where the joy of freedom is balanced by the recognition of those who have helped secure it.

In a world that often moves too quickly, this event invites people to slow down. It offers a space to reflect, to connect, and to celebrate together. The Field of Flags Summer Celebration is more than a holiday tradition, it is a reminder that behind every flag is a story, and behind every story is a community that remembers.

SAVING YOUR SMILE:

Your Root Canal

WHEN MOST PEO PLE HEAR “ROOT CANAL,” they immediately think of pain and discomfort. It is perhaps the most misunderstood procedure in modern dentistry. But as we look at the reality of treatment, it becomes clear that a root canal isn’t something to fear—it’s a sophisticated tool that allows us to save your natural teeth. The stories of significant pain are mostly due to old methods that did cause pain or badly infected teeth that were already extremely painful prior to the root canal procedure. When modern methods are used, we consistently complete root canals with very little or no discomfort.

The Foundation of Health

Of course, our first line of defense is always prevention. In our practice, the primary goal is to keep the tooth vital and healthy whenever possible. We prioritize conservative, minimally invasive treatments to avoid the need for more complex procedures. However, when the internal tissue of the tooth becomes compromised, a root canal becomes the hero of the story, allowing us to resolve the infection rather than losing the tooth entirely—a loss that can compromise surrounding structures such as bone and ligamental support or, worse, lead to the spread of infection systemically.

LKN expert

DR. CONNOR ZEHAK | NORTHCROSS DENTAL CARE

Think of a tooth like a complex system. When the pulp—the soft tissue and nerves—becomes infected or dies (necrotic), it is like an engine that has failed. The infection must be resolved to protect your overall health. By evaluating the root canals, we move “upstream” to the source of the issue. We meticulously remove the infected tissue, disinfect the internal system, and seal it to prevent reinfection. True success begins when we clean the tooth from the inside out.

AFTER EVALUATING THE SOURCE OF DISCOMFORT, WE’VE DISCOVERED SOMETHING PROFOUND: BY METICULOUSLY REMOVING INTERNAL INFECTION, WE GIVE YOUR TOOTH AN EXCEPTIONAL SECOND CHANCE.

A Predictable Second Chance

Your natural tooth is adaptable and far more powerful than most people realize. While dental implants are a fantastic modern solution, nothing functions quite like the tooth you were born with. When we measure the success of a properly treated root canal, we see incredible long-term outcomes. It allows you to maintain your natural bite and prevents the shifting of surrounding teeth.

Dr. Connor Zehak is a practicing dentist at Northcross Dental Care in Huntersville. A graduate of Midwestern University, he is a member of the American Dental Association and is specially trained in minimally invasive dental techniques. Residing in Mooresville, Dr. Zehak is dedicated to using evidence-based clinical research and the latest technology to help his patients maintain their natural smiles. WORTH BOUNDARIES

YOUR

Intwenty years of Personal Development Coaching, I’ve worked with countless good-hearted women who have suffered from not having boundaries. It’s one of the most common struggles I see; it’s not because these women are weak, passive or indecisive. The difficulty comes from early conditioning—messages absorbed in childhood that taught them their needs were negotiable, their comfort was secondary, and their worth depended on how compliant they were.

As we learn those early rules, many girls learned to keep the peace, avoid conflict, and minimize their needs and that being “good” meant being agreeable, forgiving, and endlessly accepting. These lessons become unconscious emotional rules that follow into adulthood.

Good-hearted women care intensely. They take responsibility for nearly everyone around them. They often become the emotional leaders of their families and friendships, usually without recognition or support. But here’s the truth: your support you give needs to include you.

A boundary isn’t a wall. It isn’t a punishment. It isn’t a threat. A boundary is the behavioral expression of your worth.

When a good-hearted woman tries to set a boundary, it can feel like she’s doing something wrong, it’s her unconscious emotional mind reacting to those old rules. You may feel guilt, fear, or anxiety; or you worry about upsetting someone, disappointing someone, or worse, being rejected. You may fear being seen as mean or selfish.

This isn’t weakness. This is conditioning. And you deserve so much more.

Here’s God’s honest truth: you cannot be the emotional foundation for everyone else while abandoning yourself.

Your boundaries are not about controlling others. Boundaries are about protecting access to you—your time, your energy, your peace, your emotional safety. They are how you teach the world how to treat you. And they are how you teach yourself what you deserve.

It feels uncomfortable at first. But the discomfort you feel when setting a boundary is not a sign you’re doing something wrong; it’s a sign you’re doing something different. And because it’s different, your emotional mind will try to pull you back into old patterns. But familiar is not the same as healthy.

Emotional Discovery, and Performance Coaching

Dave Jones is the founder of Captive Coaching and Empowerment. For years he has helped good-hearted women overcome drama and trauma to build confidence, set healthy boundaries, and step into their power. His passion for this work is deeply personal, inspired by the struggles of the women in his own life—especially his mom and sister. He’s also the host of the weekly podcast Her Discovered Power and now shares his insights in a monthly column by the same name in Lake Norman Woman Magazine.

Every good-hearted woman was born with amazing strength, intuition and inherent worth. Boundaries are simply the tools that allow those qualities to rise again, exactly as they were meant to!

You are allowed to say no. You are allowed to protect your peace. You are allowed to require respect. You are allowed to choose yourself. You are allowed to be. My mission is to help goodhearted women become, “The She, that she was meant to be.”

Through coaching and courses, Captive Coaching & Empowerment is committed to helping women live more empowered, intentional lives. Visit www.captivecoachingandempowerment.com.

If you’re like me and always on the hunt for easy recipes that are big on flavor, this one delivers. It’s hearty, semi-spicy (but not too hot), perfectly cheesy, and hints of a little sweetness from the fried onions. Give it a drizzle of ranch and you’re good to go!

INGREDIENTS

Buffalo Sauce:

. 1 cup Buffalo Hot Sauce

. 5 tbsp. Salted Butter

. 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire Sauce

. 1/2 tsp. Garlic Powder

. 1 Jalapeño, seeded and chopped

. Salt + Pepper, to taste

To Assemble The Buffalo Chicken Fries:

. 8 Chicken Strips,  cut into smaller chunks

. 26 oz. Frozen French Fries

. 8 oz. Sliced Provolone Cheese

. 1.5 cups Shredded Mozzarella Cheese

. 1/2 cup French Fried Onions

. 3/4 cup Ranch, or more/ less to taste

. 1/2 cup Sliced Green Onions

INSTRUCTIONS

1 Preheat the oven to 450F. Spread the French fries onto a sheet pan and bake according to their packaged directions. Add an extra 10 minutes to the suggested time to ensure the fries are super crispy.

2 While the fries are cooking, go ahead and bake or air fry the chicken strips according to their packaged directions. Once cooked, chop into smaller bite-sized pieces.

3 Meanwhile, mix all ingredients for the buffalo sauce in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Once bubbly, set aside.

4 Once crispy, remove the fries from the oven and top with the chicken, provolone cheese slices, then sprinkle with mozzarella cheese and French fried onions. Cook for 8 - 10 minutes until the French-fried onions are golden and cheese is melted.

5 Drizzle the cheesy chicken fries with desired amount of buffalo sauce and ranch. Top with green onions and serve immediately.

mind BODY spirit

Across decades of my clinical work, one pattern stands out: most people attempt to fix downstream symptoms without addressing the upstream source. They chase sleep with supplements, try to control anxiety with willpower, or push performance through effort alone. But if the brain and autonomic nervous system are dysregulated, those strategies often lead to further frustration rather than forward progress.

YOUR BRAIN matters

WE OFTEN TALK ABOUT THE MIND, body, and spirit as if they operate independently—three separate parts that we try to manage individually. But in reality, they are deeply interconnected, and the brain is the central system coordinating them all. When the brain is functioning well, alignment follows. When it’s not, we begin to feel it everywhere—fatigue in the body, fog in the mind, and a loss of clarity or purpose that many describe as a disconnect in spirit.

One of the most powerful entry points into this system is the vagus nerve and heart rate variability (HRV). These are measurable objective indicators of how effectively your body regulates stress and recovery. Think of the brain as air traffic control—managing the flow of information, emotion, and physiology. When that system is balanced, everything moves with efficiency. When it’s overwhelmed, delays, miscommunication, and overload follow.

Through simple, consistent practices (like deep diaphragmatic breathing), we can begin to restore that balance. This isn’t just about relaxation; it’s about creating coherence between the heart and brain. It is active, not passive. Over time, this practice improves sleep, enhances focus, reduces anxiety, and builds resilience.

But breathing is only part of the story. To truly understand and optimize the brain, we have to measure it directly. This is where EEG (electroencephalography) becomes essential. EEG allows us to see the brain’s electrical patterns in real time—how it’s regulating attention, processing information, and managing stress. We can identify inefficiencies that are often invisible from the outside, such as excessive high beta activity linked to stress and anxiety, or imbalances in theta that impact focus, recovery, and memory. We can see strengths and weaknesses in objective quantifiable data points.

Once identified, these patterns can be trained. Through neurofeedback, individuals learn to regulate their brain activity—much like strengthening a muscle through targeted exercise. The result is not just symptom relief, but improved performance: clearer thinking, better sleep, more stable mood, and greater adaptability under pressure.

The takeaway is simple: you can’t separate mind, body, and spirit from the brain that drives them. Start upstream. Measure what matters. Train to be the best version of yourself ... because at the end of the day, your brain matters.

Dr. Timothy Royer is a clinical neuropsychologist and co-founder of RoyerNeuroscience (www.royerneuroscience.com), a center focused on optimizing brain performance through advanced neurofeedback. With decades of experience, Dr. Royer is a national leader in brain-computer interface technology. Tune in to his radio show, Your Brain Matters, every Thursday at 4:00pm on WSIC Radio.
