Lakehead is for

YOUWhen you become a Lakehead student, you become part of a diverse and dynamic community that will support you from the time you arrive through to graduation. We believe in the potential of our students, and we are committed to helping you build the academic skills and confidence needed to succeed.

Ambition and curiosity to pursue the unconventional is at the heart of the Lakehead experience. Our highly acclaimed, award winning faculty will challenge and teach you how to think, not what to think.

Through hands-on learning opportunities and individual academic experiences that expand beyond our lecture halls, our students are offered a truly unique experience. At Lakehead, you will develop the knowledge and skills for your university years and beyond.

Welcome to your future. Welcome to Lakehead.

Lakehead University respectfully acknowledges it is located on the traditional lands of Indigenous Peoples.

Lakehead Thunder Bay is located on the traditional lands of the Fort William First Nation, Signatory to the Robinson Superior Treaty of 1850. Lakehead Orillia is located on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabeg. The Anishinaabeg include the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Pottawatomi nations, collectively known as the Three Fires Confederacy.

Lakehead University acknowledges the history that many nations hold in the areas around our locations, and is committed to a relationship with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples based on the principles of mutual trust, respect, reciprocity, and collaboration in the spirit of reconciliation.

THUNDERWOLVES Hear from our

I felt seen, I felt heard, and I felt appreciated. I had a professor who started every weekly class with a check-in on her students' mental health, and how we were doing that week. I had others who always reminded us that they were available if we needed anything and that their biggest want was for us to succeed. The professors here care, and that means everything.

Beth Ouelette Interdisciplinary Studies, HBASc (2024)

I have a passion for both chemistry and biology, and choosing the double major program allowed me to explore both subjects and learn a tremendous amount.

Ashton Henderson Biology & Chemistry, HBSc (2024)

My favourite memory at Lakehead is the field trip I took with my mammalogy class to the International Wolf Centre in Minnesota. We listened to talks about wolves, observed a wolf necropsy, and got to spend the night in the auditorium right beside the wolves enclosure. It was a really cool weekend!

Julia Dunbar Geography, HBESc (2024)

My favourite thing about Lakehead is how flexible my program has been in my ability to explore my interests. I also really value the relationships I have made with other students and faculty.

Jason Nichols History, HBA (2023) / MA (2025)

Opportunities to learn outside of a traditional lecture hall offered another layer to learning that is hands-on and practical. In some of my classes, we often did smudging, created Indigenous art, and were visited by many Elders who offered their guidance to us. This type of learning is high quality.

Brooklyn MacKenzie Indigenous Languages, HBEd (2026)

My favourite part about Thunder Bay is how, no matter where you go, you are always within walking distance of nature. Being in touch with nature brings a calm and peace to my heart, something that is rare to find in other university cities.

CO-OP, INTERNSHIP & PLACEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

HANDS-ON PLACEMENTS TO BRING EDUCATION TO LIFE

What I love most about my program is how hands-on and interactive it is. We brainstorm ideas, scout locations, rent cameras and equipment, and work together to film, act, and cast. Then we dive into editing with professional softwares and learn about the craft of cinema. We share our ideas with our professor, get feedback, and watch our projects together in class. Whether we're making short films, podcasts, radio shows, or even photography projects it’s collaborative and exciting!

My favorite memory at Lakehead is when I completed my first integrated circuit design and got it manufactured and tested it at one of the university labs. Through the College Transfer Program, I was able to reduce the number of years required to get my diploma and I was also accepted to complete my MSc in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
