I wasn’t expecting my entire outlook on cultures to change when I came to Canada, but it did – completely. In one of the leadership programs I took part in, there were different international students coming together for certain projects. Canada made me a more diverse person. I feel as if I’m open to more points of view now, open to living and being around different types of people with different mentalities and cultures. I also had the chance to represent Lakehead in France for an exchange semester. That was a very, very big accomplishment for me, so I’m grateful for that! It's a chance to share my experiences, offer guidance on navigating campus life, and help ease the transition of new students into this new chapter. I get to answer questions, provide tips on academics and campus resources, and generally be a friendly face they can rely on. Cultural events take place in the International Centre throughout the year, these are a fantastic experience for all students. I've participated in celebrations like Diwali, Lunar New Year, and the Multicultural Festival where I've enjoyed traditional performances, music, dance, and delicious food from different cultures. These events not only showcase diversity but also foster understanding and appreciation among students from various backgrounds. It's a great way to learn about different customs and traditions, and to connect with people who share a passion for global cultures.”

I was a peer tutor and mentor in the Academic Support Zone. I offered math tutoring across various programs and assisted with engineering courses during the school year and summer transition. The Academic Support Zone is a welcoming environment where students can receive personalized and group tutoring, guidance on study strategies, assistance with practice problems, and support for writing research papers and proper citation practices. With more than 27 co-op programs at Lakehead, you have the opportunity to graduate with hands-on, practical experience and gain an understanding of what it is like to work in your chosen field. Co-operative education is a form of work-integrated learning in which academic terms alternate with work terms. When I began my undergraduate studies, not only was I able to be a research assistant at the Summer School of Medical Imaging in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute, I was a co-author on an article with my professor and a PhD student to outline our findings. A year later, I received a MITACS Research Award that funded my research project relating to SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). I worked on predicting the most likely mutants of SARS-CoV-2 at the main protease level to determine which therapeutic options against the mutants would be most effective. For my final year capstone project, our group collaborated with the Thunder Bay Police Service, working closely with them to understand real-world challenges they were facing. I found it especially fulfilling to work on something that had a real impact on the local community I’ve called home throughout my time at Lakehead. Although conducting this in-depth research was intense, presenting our findings and solutions to the organization felt like a real consulting experience and gave me valuable exposure to client communication, research, teamwork, and public speaking. Through Lakehead, I found out about the Impact Mentoring Program in first year in which I was assigned to an RBC senior manager who met and mentored me every two weeks. I learned a lot of important lessons from him, and following his advice helped me land my current job at Deloitte, which I secured within a couple months of graduating."

During my internship at Information Orillia, my favourite project was creating a promotional video. When I showed it to my supervisor, she teared up. I think the power that small office held was really strong and it made me feel like my job was important and made me love what I was doing even more. NON-DIRECT ENTRY COLLABORATIVE DVM PROGRAM

Lakehead University and the University of Guelph’s Ontario Veterinary College are launching a first-of-its-kind veterinary medicine program in Canada. The Collaborative Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program (CDVMP) will train a new generation of veterinarians to serve northern, rural, remote, and Indigenous communities across Ontario. In addition to the bedrock and loose sediment that covers it, you will investigate our planet’s atmosphere, hydrosphere, history, and life. Students will learn by examining modern processes occurring on the surface and how to infer deeper Earth processes. Fieldwork is an essential component of geology, which means you will participate in two field schools during your undergraduate program. Studies at the graduate level will emphasize the fields of petrochemistry and tectonophysics, and students have the option of specializing with some having previously focused on the areas of petrology, mineralogy, geochemistry, tectonics, economic geology to name a few. The Master's program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skill to undertake a supervised research study in a relevant area of concern, within the broad definition of health. Students must choose one of the above specializations as part of their program. Although you may choose to complete research studies using quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-method approaches, you are required to demonstrate beginning competence in both quantitative and qualitative methods. The structure of the program allows you to complete elective courses in research methods and/or in a discipline-based area of interest. The PhD in Health Sciences is designed to be a researchintensive program emphasizing the development of research skills with a particular focus on populations who historically have been vulnerable to higher rates of poor health (such as seniors and Indigenous populations). Applied health research is an integral part of the program. It includes a hands-on experience through an innovative Research Internship that provides students with the opportunity to apply program content in a real-world, applied-health research setting.
