The ancient country in Southeast Europe, officially called the Hellenic Republic but more commonly known as Greece, is home to thousands of islands in the Aegean and Ionian Seas, of which 227 are inhabited. Its history is long and rich and has had an unmistakable influence on western civilization in terms of democracy, philosophy, literature, science, mathematics, theatre, and of course, the Olympic Games. Greece has enormous opportunities for those interested in ancient history, with archaeological sites on the mainland, including Athens where the famous Parthenon prominently overlooks the city, as well as in the Peloponnese region, and on many islands. There are fabulous gastronomic delights, local wine tasting, regional cultural specialties like dance and music, stunning beaches, and appealing climates. For the first time visitor to Greece, we suggest a few days in Athens where one can experience the local culture, visit the temples on the Acropolis, and get a clearer picture of its history at the magnificent Acropolis Museum. Travel north to Delphi, an extensive archaeological site that is part of the Parnassos National Park and one of the 18 UNESCO World Heritage Sites found in Greece. If ancient history is your interest, then a few days across the Corinth Canal in the Peloponnese is suggested, where many important archaeological sites are found, such as Epidaurus, Mystra, Mycenae, Olympia, and more. Even on a first trip to Greece, one should not leave without visiting at least one of its many islands. Santorini and Mykonos are two well-known islands with many resorts at beach level as well as overlooking the sea. For those seeking a less crowded setting with impressive beaches, and excellent cuisine, Naxos and Paros Islands are good options. Crete is the largest island in Greece and it offers plenty of activities. Wander through the Venetian Harbor and Agora Marketplace of Chania; relax at one of the Elounda Beach resorts and take a boat to Spinalonga Island; visit the Bronza Age ancient ruins of the Palace of Knossos and explore small fishing villages, monasteries, and secluded bays. Greece is an ideal vacation for families, couples, groups of friends, and for celebrating a milestone.
