TASMANIA Best time to visit: ALL YEAR ROUND The Australian state of Tasmania, on its own island, can be included with an Australia itinerary or visited as its own destination as you can easily spend a week just exploring Tasmania. In Hobart, the largest city in Tasmania, old sandstone warehouses on the docks have new life as galleries, restaurants and hotels. Visit the Maritime Museum and the unusual Museum of Old and New Art, as well as area wineries. See the views from Mount Wellington and visit the old penal colony at Port Arthur. A stop at a wildlife center seems required to be sure to see the ferocious marsupials that share their name with the island. Visit Mole Creek Caves to see the glow-worm displays and underground rivers. Scenic waterfalls and gorges and beautiful beaches are found in the islands national parks. Those looking for more adventure can join a wilderness cruise along high vertical sea cliffs exploring waterfalls and sea caves while watching for seals, whales and abundant sea birds.
