SAN PATRICIO Y LOS HISPANOS: UNA HISTORIA QUE TAMBIÉN NOS PERTENECE

Cada marzo, el Lowcountry se pinta de verde. Savannah celebra uno de los desfiles de San Patricio más grandes del país, Hilton Head se llena de música y festivales, y miles de familias —incluyendo muchas hispanas— se unen a la celebración. Aunque la tradición es irlandesa, su historia conecta más con los latinos de lo que muchos imaginan.

Uno de los vínculos más fuertes es la historia de los San Patricios, un batallón de inmigrantes irlandeses que luchó junto a México durante la guerra entre Estados Unidos y México en 1846. Muchos de ellos eran católicos, pobres y discriminados por su idioma y origen. Al ver que los mexicanos enfrentaban luchas similares, eligieron la solidaridad. Hoy, México honra a los San Patricios como héroes, creando un puente cultural inesperado entre Irlanda y Latinoamérica.

Puerto Rico también adoptó la celebración de San Patricio a través de comunidades

católicas y escuelas religiosas. Con el tiempo, se convirtió en una fiesta alegre, llena de música, comida y color, muy al estilo boricua. Muchas familias puertorriqueñas en el Lowcountry continúan celebrándola así.

En Hilton Head, Bluffton y Savannah, las familias hispanas participan en los eventos de San Patricio porque son actividades familiares, inclusivas y parte de la identidad local. La celebración se ha convertido en un símbolo de bienvenida, donde la diversidad del Lowcountry brilla con fuerza.

Every March, the Lowcountry turns green. Savannah hosts one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the country, Hilton Head fills with music and festivals, and thousands of families, including many Hispanic families, join the celebration. Although the tradition is Irish, its history connects more deeply to Latinos than most people realize.

One of the strongest links is the story of the San Patricios, a battalion of Irish immigrants who fought alongside Mexico during the 1846 U.S.–Mexico War. Many of these immigrants were Catholic, poor, and discriminated against for their language and origins. When they saw Mexicans facing similar struggles, they chose solidarity over division. Today, Mexico honors the San Patricios as heroes, creating an unexpected cultural bridge between Ireland and Latin America.

Puerto Rico also embraced St. Patrick’s Day through Catholic communities and religious

schools. Over time, the celebration became a lively mix of music, food, and color, a uniquely Puerto Rican version of the green tradition. Many Puerto Rican families in the Lowcountry continue to celebrate it this way.

Here in Hilton Head, Bluffton, and Savannah, Hispanic families participate in St. Patrick’s events because they are welcoming, family friendly, and part of the region’s identity. The celebration has become a symbol of inclusion, where cultures blend and the diversity of the Lowcountry shines.

St. Patrick’s Day is more than parades and green shirts. It is a story of immigrants, faith, resilience, and community, themes that resonate deeply with Hispanic families. In a region where many cultures live side by side, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day is celebrating the values we share: family, perseverance, and hope.

“Muchas veces se habla del veterano, pero se deja fuera a la familia, que también sirve. Mi esposo estuvo 23 años en el Ejército y luego casi 20 años como empleado federal. Esa experiencia me permitió conocer diversas comunidades y necesidades.”

Su liderazgo nace de esa mezcla de experiencia profesional, sensibilidad humana y compromiso comunitario.

CÓMO INVOLUCRARSE Y APOYAR SU CAMPAÑA

Mayra invita a la comunidad a informarse, participar y ser parte del proceso democrático.

“Como latinos, muchas veces pensamos que no tenemos la capacidad o el derecho de aspirar a estos puestos. Pero sí la tenemos. Tengo un bachillerato en economía, soy abogada y tengo una maestría en derecho internacional y comercio. Vengo de una familia humilde, pero con esfuerzo he logrado prepararme para servir.”

“Para los jóvenes latinos que me ven como ejemplo de servicio y valentía, quiero decirles algo muy importante: personas como yo, que venimos de familias trabajadoras y humildes, estamos abriendo caminos para ustedes. Estoy trabajando para derribar barreras y para que su futuro sea más accesible, más justo y lleno de oportunidades.

Ustedes son los líderes del futuro, pero ese futuro empieza hoy. Empieza estando informados, atentos a lo que ocurre en su comunidad y participando activamente.

Pueden hacer un excelente trabajo. Pueden ser excelentes estudiantes. Y también pueden cumplir con su responsabilidad cívica: salir a votar. No permitan que otros decidan por ustedes.

Soy madre y conozco de cerca los retos que enfrentan nuestras familias en este distrito. Por eso lucho, porque sé lo que significa no sentirse escuchado. Todos merecemos vivir

con dignidad, con oportunidades reales y con la posibilidad de construir un futuro mejor.

Acompáñenme en este camino. Si son ciudadanos americanos, regístrense, participen y hagan que su voz cuente.”

Mayra Rivera Vázquez is much more than a candidate. She is an attorney, community leader, mother, wife of a United States Army veteran, and a tireless advocate for justice and equity. Her trajectory reflects service, preparation, and a deep commitment to the families of the Lowcountry and surrounding areas.

In this exclusive conversation with La Isla Magazine, Mayra shares her story, her motivation, and her vision for a district that is growing, contributing, and deserving of dignified representation.

ROOTS, SERVICE, AND COMMUNITY

Mayra has been deeply involved in issues related to education, immigration, health, and community development. She has worked with the Lowcountry Immigration Coalition and at a local immigration law firm. She has also collaborated with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and Hopeful Horizons, and has served on school committees and on the advisory committee for the Town of Bluffton, which works directly with local law enforcement.

Her district covers a broad and diverse region:

“I represent the area of Charleston, Dorchester, Berkeley, Jasper County, Colleton, and Beaufort County.”

Her professional and personal life has been shaped by service:

“I have always been a public servant. When I arrived here, I quickly became involved in the needs of the community. But unfortunately, the representation we’ve had in Congress has not been

effective. The necessary support for families to thrive has not been approved.”

WHAT MOTIVATED HER TO RUN FOR CONGRESS?

Mayra is clear: her candidacy comes from a real need.

“I am the first Latina to run for this position in the entire state. For me, it is important that as a community —a strong and growing community— we have true representation, a real voice in Congress.”

Her vision focuses on urgent issues:

• A fair and compassionate immigration system

“I want people to have better jobs, better wages, and the opportunity to own their homes. I want our children to be able to compete globally. And I want those of us who are immigrants to live with dignity and security.”

The Influence of Being Latina, a Mother, and a Veteran’s Spouse

Mayra speaks candidly about how her family life has shaped her leadership.

“Women manage many responsibilities at once. I have two adult children; my son is autistic and nonverbal. That has taught me patience and empathy.”

As the wife of a veteran, she understands the sacrifices military families make:

“People often talk about the veteran, but the family who also serves is left out. My husband served 23 years in the Army and then nearly 20 years as a federal employee. That experience allowed me to understand diverse communities and their needs.”

Her leadership is rooted in a blend of professional experience, human sensitivity, and community commitment.

Mayra encourages the community to stay informed, participate, and be part of the democratic process.

“As Latinos, we often think we don’t have the ability or the right to aspire to these positions. But we do. I have a bachelor’s degree in economics, I’m an attorney, and I hold a master’s degree in international law and commerce. I come from a humble family, but through effort I have prepared myself to serve.”

SAN PATRICIO EL SABOR VERDE DE LA VIDA

Cada 17 de marzo, Estados Unidos se tiñe de verde. Lo que comenzó como una festividad religiosa irlandesa, se ha transformado en una explosión cultural de desfiles, tréboles y, por supuesto, una gastronomía vibrante. En ciudades como Chicago o Nueva York, la tradición manda, pero en la cocina, ¡la creatividad manda más!

Como chefs, San Patricio nos invita a jugar con la frescura. Más allá de la famosa Corned Beef, la tendencia actual busca integrar ingredientes naturales que aporten ese color emblemático sin perder la elegancia. Hoy, les comparto una propuesta "fusion" que une la tradición de la empanada con el espíritu de la Isla Esmeralda.

EMPANADAS "EMERALD" DE ESPINACA Y TRES QUESOS

Esta versión utiliza una masa enriquecida con clorofila natural para un color impactante.

INGREDIENTES:

Para la masa:

• 500g de harina,

• 100g de mantequilla,

• 1 taza de puré de espinacas frescas (licuadas y coladas).

Para el relleno:

• 200g de queso ricota

• 100g de mozzarella

• 50g de parmesano y un toque de nuez moscada

Preparación:

1. Masa: Integra la harina con la mantequilla pomada. Agrega el puré de espinacas poco a poco hasta obtener una masa verde homogénea. Deja reposar 30 minutos.

2. Relleno: Mezcla los tres quesos con la nuez moscada y una pizca de pimienta.

3. Armado: Estira la masa, corta discos de 12 cm y rellena. Cierra con un pellizcado tradicional.

4. Cocción: Hornea a 200°C por 15-18 minutos hasta que estén ligeramente doradas pero mantengan su color vibrante.

THE GREEN FLAVOR OF LOVE

Every March 17, the United States turns green. What began as a religious Irish holiday has transformed into a cultural explosion of parades, shamrocks, and of course, vibrant food. In cities like Chicago or New York, tradition leads the way, but in the kitchen, creativity leads even more.

For chefs, St. Patrick’s Day is an invitation to play with freshness. Beyond the classic Corned Beef, today’s trend leans toward natural ingredients that bring that iconic color without sacrificing elegance. Here’s a “fusion” idea that blends the tradition of the empanada with the spirit of the Emerald Isle.

“EMERALD” SPINACH & THREE CHEESE EMPANADAS

This version uses a dough enriched with natural chlorophyll for a striking green color.

INGREDIENTS:

For the dough:

• 500g flour

• 100g butter

• 1 cup fresh spinach purée (blended and strained)

For the filling:

• 200g ricotta

• 100g mozzarella

• 50g parmesan

• A touch of nutmeg

Preparation:

1.Dough: Combine the flour with softened butter. Add the spinach purée little by little until you get a smooth green dough. Let rest for 30 minutes.

2. Filling: Mix the three cheeses with nutmeg and a pinch of pepper.

3. Assembly: Roll out the dough, cut 12 cm circles, and fill. Seal with a traditional pleated edge.

4. Cooking: Bake at 200°C (about 400°F) for 15–18 minutes until lightly golden while keeping their vibrant color.

El debate migratorio que se desarrolla en Columbia no es política distante. Afecta directamente el futuro del Lowcountry: nuestra fuerza laboral, la seguridad pública y la estabilidad económica de la región.

En la sesión legislativa 2025–2026, se han presentado proyectos de ley que ampliarían significativamente el papel del estado en la aplicación de leyes migratorias federales. Propuestas como H.4764 obligarían a las agencias locales que operan cárceles a firmar acuerdos con ICE bajo la Sección 287(g), convirtiendo a oficiales locales en agentes autorizados para realizar funciones federales. Otras medidas crearían nuevos

delitos estatales relacionados con la presencia ilegal o incentivarían reportes de personas indocumentadas. Paralelamente, ICE ha ampliado su presencia en Columbia, estableciendo oficinas para su división legal.

Para el Lowcountry, esto no es un debate lejano. Nuestra economía depende de sectores como hospitalidad, construcción, salud y pequeños negocios, donde los trabajadores inmigrantes son esenciales. Desde resorts y restaurantes hasta obras de construcción y servicios de cuidado, su aporte sostiene el crecimiento regional. Cuando las políticas de cumplimiento migratorio se endurecen, los efectos se sienten de inmediato: escasez de mano de obra, retrasos en proyectos, aumento de costos y, en consecuencia, precios más altos para residentes y visitantes.

El crecimiento acelerado del Lowcountry requiere una fuerza laboral estable. Si los nuevos mandatos desvían a las fuerzas del orden hacia funciones migratorias, debemos preguntarnos cómo afectará esto las prioridades de seguridad pública.

¿Habrá menos recursos para combatir delitos violentos, garantizar la seguridad vial o fortalecer la vigilancia comunitaria?

¿Tendrán las familias miedo de reportar delitos o colaborar como testigos?

La seguridad pública depende de la confianza. En una región diversa como la nuestra, esa confianza es fundamental. Si los residentes temen que una parada de tráfico o una llamada de emergencia pueda desencadenar consecuencias migratorias, podrían optar por no pedir ayuda, lo que aumenta la vulnerabilidad de toda la comunidad.

También existe un impacto financiero. Participar en programas federales de cumplimiento puede generar costos adicionales de capacitación, detención y administración para los condados. Los contribuyentes merecen claridad sobre cuánto costarían estas medidas y si los reembolsos federales serían suficientes. En una región que ya enfrenta desafíos de infraestructura, cada gasto importa.

Más allá de los números, está la identidad del Lowcountry. Somos una comunidad acogedora, emprendedora y orientada al futuro. Nuestra reputación es clave para el turismo, la inversión y la capacidad de atraer talento. Un clima percibido como hostil puede afectar la expansión empresarial y la disponibilidad de trabajadores en sectores críticos.

Esto no significa ignorar las leyes migratorias. La seguridad fronteriza es un asunto nacional legítimo. Pero la pregunta para los residentes del Lowcountry es si ampliar la participación estatal y local en la aplicación de leyes federales es la solución adecuada para nuestra región, y si se han evaluado plenamente los costos sociales y económicos. Por eso tu voz es esencial.

Si vives en Beaufort, Berkeley o Charleston, comunícate con tu representante estatal y tu senador. Pregunta cómo estas propuestas afectarían las prioridades de seguridad pública y solicita un análisis fiscal específico para tu condado. Exige claridad sobre cómo planean proteger tanto la seguridad como la estabilidad económica de los sectores de hospitalidad y construcción.

Participa en reuniones comunitarias, escribe a los periódicos locales, habla en foros públicos. Motiva a líderes empresariales, religiosos y cívicos a involucrarse. Las decisiones que se tomen en Columbia influirán en la vida diaria del Lowcountry, pero no deben tomarse sin la participación de quienes vivimos y trabajamos aquí.

El Lowcountry merece políticas reflexivas, basadas en datos y no en el miedo. Sea cual sea tu postura, exige responsabilidad, transparencia y un análisis serio del impacto real en nuestra economía y nuestras comunidades.

El futuro del Lowcountry debe ser decidido por ciudadanos informados y comprometidos. Ahora es el momento de alzar la voz.

THE FUTURE OF THE LOWCOUNTRY IS ON THE LINE MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD

The immigration debate unfolding in Columbia is not distant politics. It will shape the future of the Lowcountry’s workforce, public safety, and economy.

During the 2025–2026 legislative session, lawmakers introduced several bills expanding the state’s role in federal immigration enforcement. One proposal, H.4764, would require local jails to enter agreements with U.S. Immigration and

Customs Enforcement (ICE) under Section 287(g), allowing local officers to perform certain federal immigration functions. Other measures would create state penalties tied to unlawful presence or encourage reporting of undocumented individuals. At the same time, ICE has expanded its presence in downtown Columbia.

For the Lowcountry, these decisions carry real consequences. Our economy depends on hospitality, construction, healthcare, and small businesses. From Hilton Head Island to Charleston, immigrant workers help power restaurants, resorts, homebuilding, landscaping, and senior care. Significant

increases in enforcement could mean labor shortages, delayed projects, higher costs, and rising prices for residents and visitors.

Rapid regional growth also depends on a steady workforce and clear public safety priorities. If local law enforcement is required to take on federal immigration duties, residents should ask how that affects focus on violent crime, traffic safety, and community policing. Public safety is strongest when trust exists between law enforcement and the community. If people fear that routine interactions could carry immigration consequences, they may hesitate to report crimes or cooperate as witnesses.

There are financial questions as well. Expanded mandates could bring added training, detention, and administrative costs for counties. Taxpayers deserve transparency about those costs and whether federal reimbursement would fully cover them.

Beyond economics and budgets lies a broader question about the kind of community the Lowcountry wants to be. Tourism, business investment, and workforce recruitment all depend on reputation and stability. Employers considering expansion look closely at whether a region can attract and retain workers.

Immigration enforcement is a legitimate national issue. The question locally is whether expanding state and local involvement is the right approach for our region and whether the economic and social impacts have been fully considered.
