Watkins Cattle Company 8th Annual Bull & Female Sale

Page 1

WELCOME TO THE 8TH ANNUAL WATKINS CAT TLE COMPANY FALL SALE!

First and foremost, thank you. Thank you for taking the time to look at our cattle, consider our program, and allow us the opportunity to share what we have worked so hard to build. We never take that for granted. We are proud to call the fescue belt home, and we believe cattle should be built for the environment they live in. Our goal has always been simple: raise cattle that work. Cattle that are fertile, functional, good-footed, easy-doing, and capable of producing heavy, healthy calves year after year. This past year has reminded us just how much family, friends, and community mean. On May 26, 2024, an EF3 tornado tore through our home place and changed our operation in ways we never could have imagined. We are still rebuilding today. But through it all, we were reminded of what cannot be torn down — the people who stand beside you when times are hard. The support we have received from our family, friends, neighbors, customers, and community has meant more to us than we can put into words. Every helping hand, every phone call, every prayer, and every word of encouragement has helped us keep moving forward. We are truly blessed. And moving forward is exactly what we are doing. Once again, we will host our sale here at the ranch in a new facility that we are building where we have parked trailers in the past. It is another step in rebuilding, and we are excited to welcome you home to our place.

We are especially excited about this year’s cattle. We will offer our deepest set of yearling bulls to date, a select group of registered spring-bred females, and yearling registered heifers ready to breed this fall. We will also offer our largest set yet of open yearling commercial heifers. Tim Crunkleton Farms will again be represented with a select group of open commercial heifers. Tim has been a longtime friend of our family and has supported Watkins Cattle Company with bull purchases since the beginning. We are proud to have his cattle as part of our sale. All heifers have been pelvic checked, tract scored, and vaccinated to be ready for fall breeding. We believe this is a set of cattle that represents where we are headed as a program — functional cattle with the kind of genetics that can make a difference in a real-world, grass-based operation.

While cattle are what bring us together on sale day, family is what makes all of this worthwhile. This year has brought plenty of changes for our family. LaTeresa has faced some health challenges, and although she has made significant improvements, she has been limited in what she has been able to do. We are grateful for her progress and for the people who have surrounded her with love and support. Our oldest daughter, Kaitlin, is teaching first grade at Valley Springs School. She and her husband, Russell Goodman, are also busy building their own cow herd and raising our two grandchildren, Hazel and Hatch. Our middle daughter, Mattie, graduated from graduate school at the University of Central Arkansas in Speech-Language Pathology. She also married Brock Knapp in September. We couldn’t be more proud of her and excited to see where their journey takes them. Our youngest daughter, Laramie, has started her college career and will be playing basketball at the University of Arkansas–North Ark. We are looking forward to watching her chase that dream. And this year, we are thankful to have Dalton Billups joining our operation as our herdsman. We appreciate his hard work and the help he has provided as we continue rebuilding. The cattle business has always been about more than numbers on a spreadsheet. It is about cows that get bred, calves that grow, feet that last, and cattle that can go to work every day without needing to be pampered.

We believe the fundamentals still matter. Fertility matters. Functionality matters. Disposition matters. Pounds matter. And cattle that work in the environment they are born into matter. We are excited about the opportunities in today’s cattle industry and especially about the continued interest in Red Angus-sired genetics. We look forward to sharing more about the Angus Access program and the opportunities it provides for Red Angus-sired calves. We continue to invest in the tools that help us make better decisions, including genomically enhanced EPDs, carcass ultrasound, and our own on-ranch evaluations for docility,

fertility, and phenotype. But at the end of the day, we still believe the cow must work in the pasture. That is what we are trying to build. Cattle that work for you. Cattle that fit your environment. Cattle that make you money. And cattle that you will still be proud of years down the road. Thank you for trusting in Watkins Cattle Company and for giving us the opportunity to earn your business. Whether you have bought cattle from us for years or this is your first time looking through our offering, we are grateful you are here. We hope you enjoy the cattle, enjoy the fellowship, and most of all, feel at home when you visit our ranch. We look forward to seeing you on sale day. Safe travels, God bless you and your family and thank you for being part of the Watkins Cattle Company family. Sincerely,

Watkins Cattle Company

SALE LOCATION

When we started Watkins Cattle Company, we had a vision. We wanted it to be family-owned, family-operated, and something our girls could grow up being a part of. We have raised three daughters through this business. They have grown up around the cattle, the work, the long days, the early mornings, the good days, and the hard ones. Through every change and every season, our family has been at the center of Watkins Cattle Company. Truthfully, it was never just about the cattle. It was always about our family. Over the years, we have had people tell us that we could do things differently or that we should make changes. Maybe they were right. But for a long time, we were determined to make it work the way we had always envisioned it. Then life happened.

ILLUPS

D A LT O N , H E AT H E R , J O H N & T R I P P

The last three years have taught us some things that are difficult to put into words. Health struggles for both Michael and LaTeresa, a devastating tornado in May of 2024, and watching our girls grow into young women with lives and responsibilities of their own have changed our family and our operation in ways we never expected. A family business is demanding. We have always known that. We welcomed the long hours, the sacrifices, and the responsibility because we believed in what we were building together. But no one really prepares you for the day when the way you’ve always done things simply isn’t sustainable anymore. That realization has been hard. There is a certain amount of pride that comes with saying, “We can do it ourselves.” And there is an even greater amount of humility in admitting, “We need some help.” So, with a lot of thought and prayer, we are excited to announce that Dalton Billups has joined Watkins Cattle Company as our Herdsman. Dalton will help with the day-to-day operation and become an important part of our team as we move into this next chapter. Dalton and his wife, Heather, have two boys, John and Tripp, and their family is from the area. Heather is a sixth-grade teacher at Harrison Public Schools. Dalton brings considerable experience in the cattle business and is an accomplished cowboy and farrier. More importantly, we believe he is the kind of person we want to have beside us as we continue building this operation. We know that bringing someone into something that has been so deeply personal and family-centered is a big step. Watkins Cattle Company is a part of who we are, and we don’t take that lightly. We are looking forward to Dalton learning the ins and outs of our operation, becoming part of our family and team, and helping us carry this business forward. We are also looking forward to all of you getting to know Dalton and his family. This isn’t the end of the Watkins Cattle Company we dreamed about. It’s simply a new chapter. Sometimes evolving doesn’t mean giving up on what you’ve built. Sometimes it means making the changes necessary to protect it, strengthen it, and allow it to continue. Our family is still at the heart of everything we do. Our love for cattle hasn’t changed. Our commitment to this operation hasn’t changed. We’re just learning that sometimes, the strongest thing a family can do is recognize when it’s time to let someone else help carry the load. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has stood beside our family through the good times, the hard times, and everything in between. Your support has meant more to us than you will ever know. We are excited about this next chapter and thankful that we don’t have to write it alone.

Welcome to the Watkins Cattle Company family, Dalton. We are glad you’re here. 3

What a way to start off the sale! Look at this big, stout, gentle, good footed herd sire. Lot 1 has stood out since not long after he was born and he has never slowed down. If you want overall performance, carcass, and maternal in one package, get started here. We were impressed with his sire when Country Boy Farms and Bull Hill Ranch purchased him, and we were fortunate to get to sample him. Combine that with the seven-yearold Hughes dam and it is a unique genetic package.

Take a look at this stud! This could be one of the most complete herd sires we have raised. This Eastwood son is out of a Grindstone heifer and she did it all! This phenotypic stand out is something to see. We think this bull has so much to offer and can move your program in so many different directions. You will notice that he stuck something in his right eye as a calf, but it has not slowed him down on the way to being lot 2.

Look at the muscle in Lot 3. We are especially proud of this herd bull as his sire was our high selling bull in our 2024 sale and went to Veale Ranch in west Texas. When we find genetics that work in our environment it makes breeding easier. This super gentle young herd sire will stamp his progeny with look and performance. You will be the talk of the town when you have a group of his females.

We have really grown to love these Game Changer sired cattle. They have really fit our environment and can perform at an elevated level on fescue. This big ribbed, square hipped herd sire is sure to fit the bill for improving your program. We really like the phenotype on these cattle, and the females are looking very promising. Go ahead and change your program with lot 4.

The Manhattan sired bulls were our best-selling sire group in last year’s sale, and we are still bringing the goods. We were pleased with our first set of Manhattan daughters calving this fall and you will see some later in the sale. The added length and depth make these cattle stand out. You cannot go wrong with this good-footed, slick haired herd sire.

Look at this female maker! This sires grandam has been prolific at producing high-performance cattle and this bull is no exception. This bull checks lots of boxes with a balance of carcass and maternal. Lot 6 would benefit your operation as well. If you have not got a bull yet, here is a good place to get started.

We have been looking at this calf for quite some time. Kings River was a highlight sire at our 2024 sale and was purchased by Kevin Barrows. While he has been productive in their program, we have been excited to use him in ours. Lot 11 is out of a nice young Stockman 4051 daughter, and we expect a bright future for her. Take a good look at this slick haired herd sire and plug him into your program.

Take a good look at this slick haired Patriot bull. King-Ballard Farm purchased his sire, and we could not be happier with this young sire’s progeny. If you want performance and balance in your program, get to looking right here. This Declaration heifer’s first calf was a doozy and her dam stayed in our program until she was 17 years old. Get your hand in the air on Lot 12.

theB U L L S Lucky lot 13 is a maternal powerhouse. Slick haired, easy fleshing progeny are in your future with this herd sire. Great cows are on both sides of this pedigree.

When we flushed KF 244 we knew what we had and the Merlin cross was outstanding. This cow produced so many embryos that we just keep putting a few in every year. These calves will always be some of the most sought-after genetics in our sale. We know we have 2 experienced ranchers that will be fighting over this calf. Do not let a good heifer bull get by you.

Who put this sale order together? Lot 27 is sure a stud and if you look at lot 25 you will see similar breeding. This moderate framed sire will be a hit for producing high performing cattle in a grass-based operation.

theB U L L S Wow! Look at this heifer bull. You are going to have a challenging time finding a better one. We do not raise very many heifer bulls, and this one will make you happy.

These Hi Frequency calves, are really good, and they have a great look. Being in a drought for the first 8 months of his life may have slowed him down a little but the end product is on point. Cattle have to perform in real world situations, just like in your operation. Lot 29 will move lots of programs forward.

Well, we are ending up with a ¾ brother to lot 1. Here is your last chance. Few programs picture their last lot, but this is a good-looking bull. Go ahead and get your bidder card out and do not go home alone!

WATKINS CAT TLE COMPANY 8TH ANNUAL PRODUCTION SALE

This bull’s dam cut her foot not long after he was born. Probably something we had not picked up from the tornado. She did the best job she could in a drought but as you can see, he came on after weaning and made a bull. Genetics are there to produce quality progeny. Only one bull left, do not go home empty handed.

We breed sisters to the same bulls and when we find something we like we try to replicate it. We like consistency and this is part of how we do it. Here is you chance to have some sisters that could help your program go a different direction.

This is the only Hi Frequency daughter to sell this year. We really like these females look and performance. The females we have in our program have exceptional feet and udders.

1. Contact the Red Angus valueadded department at 940-477-4593 and complete a short supplier enrollment questionnaire over the phone. If needed, the producer may be asked to supply additional documentation on breeding such as semen receipt, lease agreements or information on purchased females. 2. After all documentation is recorded, staff will ship the tags directly to the producer who must tag the calves before they leave the ranch of origin – birth, branding, preconditioning, weaning or before loading on the semi.

Red Angus Guide to EPDS and Indexes ProS – Profitability and Sustainability is an all-purpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments in the beef supply chain. This index is a combination of the breeding objectives modeled in the HerdBuilder and GridMaster selection indexes. In this index, replacement heifers are retained from within the herd and all remaining progeny are fed out to slaughter and sold on a quality-based grid. Traits included in this index include CED, ADG, HPG, STAY, MW, DMI, CW, MARB, REA and Fat.

HB – HerdBuilder is a maternal selection index that predicts the economic differences of animals for traits that are important from conception through weaning.

Index | Dollars per Head | Higher Value

Index | Dollars per Head | Higher Value

HB is calculated based on the scenario that bulls are mated to heifers and cows, replacement heifers are retained and all remaining progeny are marketed at weaning. This index is a combination of CED, CEM, WW, Milk, MW, HPG and STAY.

CED – Calving Ease Direct predicts differences in the percent of calves born unassisted out of 2-year-old dams. Percent | Higher Value BW – Birth Weight predicts differences in actual birth weight of progeny. Pounds | Lower Value WW – Weaning Weight predicts differences in 205-day weaning weight. Pounds | Higher Value YW – Yearling Weight predicts differences in 365-day yearling weight. Pounds | Higher Value ADG – Average Daily Gain predicts differences in weight gain between 205 and 365 days of age. Pounds | Higher Value DMI – Dry Matter Intake predicts differences in daily feed intake as measured in a feedlot during the post-weaning period. Pounds | Lower Value MILK – Milk predicts differences in weaning weight attributed to the milking ability of the animal’s daughters. Pounds | Higher Value ME – Maintenance Energy predicts the difference in maintence energy requirements. Mcals per Month | Lower Value HPG – Heifer Pregnancy predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to conceive and calve at 2 years of age following exposure to breeding. Percent | Higher Value

GM – GridMaster is a selection index that predicts the average economic difference of non-replacement calves through the post-weaning phase of production. GM places selection pressure on growth, feed yard performance and carcass traits. GM is calculated based on the scenario that progeny are fed out to slaughter and marketed on a quality-based carcass grid. This index is a combination of ADG, CW, DMI, MARB, Fat and REA. Index | Dollars per Head | Higher Value

CEM – Calving Ease Maternal predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to calve unassisted as 2-year-old heifers. Percent | Higher Value STAY – Stayability predicts differences in the ability of an animals’ retained daughters to remain productive in the herd – calve every year – through 6 years of age. Percent | Higher Value MARB – Marbling predicts differences in marbling score – amount of intramuscular fat measured at the 13th rib. Marbling Score Units | Higher Value YG – Yield Grade predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade, which is calculated using CW, REA and Fat. Yield Grade Units | Lower Value CW – Carcass Weight predicts differences in actual hot carcass weight. Pounds | Higher Value REA – Ribeye Area predicts differences in square inches of ribeye area measured at the 13th rib. Square Inches | Higher Value FAT – Fat predicts differences in the depth of backfat measured between the 12th and 13th ribs. Inches | Lower Value
