International President, 2018-19 – Mark Maloney RC of Decatur, Alabama, USA October message 2019 Rotary's long-term, sustained battle against polio has defined our organization for decades. We have a right to be proud of all that we have accomplished through the years. Our progress is real and noteworthy. In 1988, polio was endemic in 125 countries, with more than 350,000 new cases a year worldwide. Since then, Rotary and our Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners have reduced the incidence of polio by more than 99.9 percent, vaccinated more than 2.5 billion children against the virus, and prevented 18 million cases of paralysis. Over the years, Rotary has helped country after country move into the polio-free column. This includes India, which some considered impossible not long ago. Of the three types of poliovirus, type 2 has been eradicated and type 3 could soon be certified as eradicated. Nigeria has not reported a case of wild poliovirus in nearly three years. If this trend holds, we will be down to just one type of wild poliovirus in only one section of the world, Afghanistan and Pakistan. There are major challenges in that region. But it is crucial that we remain optimistic. Look at all that we have accomplished so far. This is no time to get discouraged or to think that the task is impossible. We will end polio forever, but only if we remain steadfast and vigilant.

World Polio Day is a time for Rotarians from all over the globe to come together, recognize the progress we have made in our fight against polio, and plan the action we must take to end polio forever. The key word is action, because we still have important work to do. This year, we want to see as many Rotary clubs as possible holding World Polio Day events around the world. Need some ideas? How about organizing a viewing party for friends and club members to watch Rotary's Online Global Update? You could also dedicate a club meeting to World Polio Day or create a fundraising event. Remember, every dollar raised is matched 2-to-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Once you have created an event, register it at endpolio.org/register-your-event. Then promote it using the World Polio Day toolkit, available at endpolio.org/world-polio-day. Mark your calendar to tune in to Rotary's World Polio Day Online Global Update on 24 October. This year we will stream our program on Facebook in multiple time zones around the world. Visit the Rotary International Facebook page to RSVP to your region's program. And do not forget to follow the event on social media and share it with your network. When we reach our goal, polio will become only the second human disease eradicated on the planet, and Rotary will receive international acclaim. But what matters most is the children who will never again have to face this terrible, disabling virus. Rotary must continue to connect the world in the effort toward polio eradication. What is RLI? ROTARY LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) program is a series of fast-paced, interactive courses offered to refine a Rotarian's leadership skills and increase their base of knowledge in Rotary.1 RLI has spread to over 350 districts in the Rotary world and has been translated into ten languages. Courses are fun, topical, interactive, and geared to busy business, professional and community leaders who want to be more effective leaders in their vocation and Rotary club, and more knowledgeable Rotarians. Participants return to their clubs with enthusiasm, new contacts, fresh ideas, an increased understanding of their potential as Rotarians, and valuable skills impacting their potential leadership in the club. RLI is an unofficial affiliate of Rotary International; it is not an official program of Rotary International nor under its control

Afghanistan, an update… In August – • • •
3 cases of wild poliovirus were reported. 5.1 million children were vaccinated. Permanent Transit Teams (PTTs) vaccinated 1 579 581 children, and crossborder teams vaccinated 160 046 children against polio. At the undergird of the polio programme in Afghanistan are women — polio officers, health workers, frontline workers, mothers, sisters, daughters, and grandmothers— some are anonymous, and some are on the frontlines. But what is clear is that the polio programme is driven by women on a mission. The milestones achieved in the global fight against polio eradication are in large part due to the female work force. They are able to step beyond the threshold of countless homes, and effectively cross socio-cultural barriers. MANILA, Philippines -- Philippine health officials declared a polio outbreak in the country on Thursday, nearly two decades after the World Health Organization declared it to be free of the highly contagious and potentially deadly disease. Click this link to read more.
Statement from International PolioPlus Chair Michael K. McGovern on circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 case in the Philippines Through ongoing disease surveillance, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative has confirmed a circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) case in a three-year-old girl in the Philippines, along with a possible second case pending confirmation from the World Health Organization. No cases of wild poliovirus have been discovered, and the Philippines’ polio-free status is not at risk. We’re saddened by this news and for the child, especially as Rotary approaches the 40-year anniversary of our first immunization project in the Philippines in 1979. It is important to remember that cVDPVs are extremely rare and only occur in under-immunized communities. Vaccination coverage in the Philippines has been steadily declining over the past few years, and the case reported recently underscores how crucial it is to increase vaccination coverage to at least 95% of children to stop future spread of polio. Rotary and our partners are working with counterparts and public health authorities in the Philippines to strengthen surveillance and support immunization responses in the coming weeks and months.

Rotary has a broad and active network in the Philippines—a network that has the power to raise awareness about the importance of improving immunization rates and making sure every single child is protected against polio. On Friday, 20 September, the 10 District Governors in the Philippines signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Health to work together to ensure the success of the upcoming polio immunization campaigns. We appreciate the leadership and commitment of Rotarians in the Philippines to protect all children from polio in the country where Rotary held the inaugural polio immunization campaign. In my short time with Rotary, I have been described by members of the Rotary Family as: provocative, a sh*t disturber, a bull in a china shop, and my personal favourite: a hurricane in heels. Still, I was recently invited to serve on a panel at a Zone Conference regarding new club development. Through this panel, I shared an idea that to me doesn’t seem radical. But in discussion with attendees afterwards became apparent that it was something that had never been considered before. The idea that the old faithful “Service Above Self” motto might better serve us if approached from the angle “Service Through Self”. Most passionate Rotarians can probably think of a time when they were so dedicated to a project, so committed to a cause, that they put the service to the organization above their own needs, perhaps to a point where they felt burnt out. Those who can’t think of such a time may have actually reached it but instead suppressed those feelings, which eventually lead to disinterest, a lack of motivation and dedicationand perhaps eventually their ultimate departure from Rotary. While the dedication of these members is admirable, it is also detrimental. These departed members are now not only missing from the organization, but they will not feel, and therefore not speak, positively of Rotary to anyone who asks- creating with it a public image issue and reducing the number of individuals who may want to join. All this, because they have been told time and time again to put the service above themselves. I would go so far as to speculate that if we were to poll former Rotary Family members and ask them why they made the decision to leave- speaking honestly, many of them would cite “burnout” as a reason. If this were true, it would suggest that we are losing our most dedicated members to something that for years has been at our very core- our dedication to service. I do not need to explain why this is something that is ultimately a disservice not only to Rotary, but to humanity as a whole. In Rotary, we like to look at things through rose-coloured glasses, to focus on the positives of the organization rather than our opportunities. But the trouble with that, is that when looking at the world through rose-coloured glasses, red flags simply look like flags; they lose their ability to warn us of areas of concern. While we definitely should take the time to celebrate and commemorate the things we have accomplished, we must also take off the glasses from time-to-time to see where we can improve- and this is one of those instances. Being a part of the Rotary Family is dedicating yourself to the service of humanity, but aren’t we just as much a part of humanity as anyone else? Can we not serve our own needs, whether they be personal, professional, or the needs of our very soul- while still serving others? Can we not grow ourselves and grow Rotary at the same time? Whether it is developing our networks, making new friends, gaining new skills, or so far as to give ourselves a sense of purpose or accomplishment, Rotary can serve us as we serve the world. I am sure that in many cases it already does, but with the constant reminder of “service above self” is probably just as or more frequently steering clubs, districts, and beyond to not focus on that element; to measure themselves only in community and global service, only in foundation contributions - but we could be so much more. This idea, this approach, will not only attract new members to the Rotary Family - it will keep the best ones we already have. How’s that for growing Rotary? “Service Through Self” is a change to our very core - but perhaps it is the very change we need to turn this old ship in a more fruitful direction, revitalizing the organization as we have never seen before. Perhaps, it is exactly what we need and exactly the time to do it. Service Through Self: Grow You, Grow Rotary, Grow Humanity

A reminder! ROTARY FRIENDSHIP EXCHANGE TRIP TO SOUTH AFRICA MARSHA KALAKAY Greetings Fellow Rotarians! Our Rotary Friendship Exchange trip to South Africa will be here before you know it. During our trip, we will visit and stay with Rotarians of District 9400. They will teach us of their culture and introduce us to the successes and challenges of their communities. Although our itinerary is not yet complete, I do know that we are scheduled to visit the children’s ward of an area hospital and an early childhood center. We are collecting needed items for both locations. I will be packing an extra suitcase to take and leave for the children that we visit. We have been asked to bring with us lightweight infant sleepers and receiving blankets, clothing for small children and educational toys. The clothing and blankets can be new or gently used. I am also in need of a lightweight suitcase that I can leave behind. Marsha Kalakay

A message from 6330 Passport member Lynn Coates Greetings from sunny Barcelona Spain!! On our post-tour after the 2019 Europe Eastern Mediterranean Africa Conference (EMMA 2019), we had the honour of being invited to the Rotary Club of Barcelona meeting. This is me at left with their Club president.
On Thursday, September 12, I attended an East Coast Kitchen Party (ECKP) Task Force meeting as the Passport Club’s representative at the home of Kathleen Murphy, Area 4 Assistant Governor, here in London. In attendance were the clubs that have been invited to take part in this fund raiser organized by the London Club: Those clubs are:

Here is a brief review for anyone who was not involved or attended the Fund Raiser last year. The London Club organized the East Coast Kitchen Party (this will be Year 3) for their major fund-raiser event and invited clubs to help out and share in the profits as follows: • • •
All Clubs Silent and Live Auction proceeds are given to that club. We raised $5,193.00 Sales from Games. The fish pond, shrimp and oysters, kiss the cod – again shared by the clubs. Our share was $400.72 The ticket sales as a rule cover the expenses. Any left-over is divided up amongst the clubs by number of tickets they sold.
Tanya worked on Auction Items and getting the word out for ticket sales. I was on the committee, assisting other committee heads - on seating chart, picking up props, printing, and greeting the night of the event. \\ We also had volunteers from our Passport club on the floor that evening - Sorry do not have the names right now. On the next page are the fund-raising results:

Cycling without Age In early September, 6330 Passport was out with the “Cycling Without Age” trishaw. Our four riders today had a combined age of over 250 years. We were honoured to help them all get out and about.
