tepping onto the green, one discovers a stillness – a moment devoted to considering your next move. A time to reflect on which club is best for your shot. A period to evaluate the distance between where you stand and your ultimate goal. The First Tee of Greater St. Louis takes this powerful moment and expands on it, introducing additional benefits to area youth. “We teach life-skills educational programming and healthy habits through the game of golf,” executive director Michele Miller South explains. “We take what you learn on the course and apply it to every day, such as critical thinking.” The innovative program is currently available at 63 area elementary schools through physical education classes. The nonprofit organization has access to six golf courses, where it hosts three sessions each year. For $50 a session, children try their hand at the sport – and learn invaluable lessons along the way. “In golf, you’re made to stop, anticipate and respond,” South says. “You have to think about the next shot you want to take, which club to use and how far the ball will go. Children can use those decision-making skills [elsewhere, like] when considering whether to go out shopping with friends the night before an English test. When things aren’t going well on the golf course, you have to learn to manage your emotions, think things through and make a good choice.” Game play is not limited to just those who can afford the price tag. “We never turn a child away because they can’t pay,” South assures. “Those who are unable to pay can use our scholarship fund. We also provide college scholarships to seniors in our program. In the last three years, we’ve given Eric Heckman, Michele Miller South, out six college scholarships.” Vinet Whiteside and Adam Brennan Membership to The First Tee of Greater St. Louis is open to youth ages seven to 17 and also serves those with special needs, including autism and Down Syndrome. Youngsters between the ages of five and six can enroll in “Little Linksters,” which introduces them to the organization’s nine core values: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment. he Saint Louis Crisis Nursery recently held its premier fundraising event and gala, the 2018 Razzle Dazzle Ball. This year’s event took place at the Sheraton Westport Plaza Hotel St. Louis with the theme “Garden of Hope.” A glamorous evening of dinner, dancing, live and silent auctions, live music and specialty cocktails, it attracted more than 500 of the area’s most distinguished citizens, who came together to support the organization’s mission of preventing child abuse and neglect. Hugs and Kisses Awards went to Man of the Year Chip Walker and Young Professional of the Year Ciara Samana. Co-chairing the event were Pam Duffy and Janet Langley.

atients, guests, and supporters recently gathered at the Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis for the Lupus Foundation of America Heartland Chapter’s Purple Ball. After a cocktail reception featuring a silent auction, a raffle and a wine pull, guests enjoyed dinner and a program including the presentation of the Lupus Leadership Award to Dr. Alfred Kim, followed by a live auction, music and dancing. The cruel mystery of lupus – a complex disease both hard to define and to diagnose – affects each person differently, with no known cause or cure. Along with providing monthly support groups, educational workshops, a patient assistance fund and a summer camp for girls with lupus, the Lupus Foundation of America Heartland Chapter provides information and referral services for those newly diagnosed with this mysterious and often-debilitating affliction.

The academy offers multiple programs that students, teens and even the general public can enjoy and learn from; it has been advancing public understanding of science and promoting interest in the sciences to students and adults since 1856.

his week, the 2018 Women of Achievement will be lauded for their remarkable achievements in volunteer leadership across metro St. Louis. Women of Achievement, St. Louis’ longest-running program recognizing area women for their volunteerism, will salute this year’s class during its 63rd annual awards luncheon at 11:45 a.m. on May 15 at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis in Clayton. Ladue News would like to give three of these ladies another round of applause for their dedication to our community, after an unfortunate oversight in the original announcement made within the May 4 edition.

Tammy Iskarous: Social EntErpriSE

Tammy Iskarous’ pastor friend once said: “The greatest gift you can give someone is the gift of your attention.” Since then, she says she has tried to live that advice out loud. “I have had a heart to serve and make a difference since I was a teenager,” Iskarous says. “I have always been active in youth ministry, mission trips and community connections.” Eleven years ago, Iskarous founded Riverbend Family Ministries, an umbrella organization offering resources to smaller nonprofits that provide families and individuals with tools to be self-sufficient across Madison County, Illinois. “Not only do I get to watch these nonprofits flourish, I get the privilege of pouring into families’ lives every day,” she says. Iskarous, who has logged more than 30,000 volunteer hours and served on community boards from the YWCA of Alton to the Wood River Woman’s Club, sees herself aiding families in need and being a voice of change for generations to come. “I love serving our families in crisis due to violence, addiction, homelessness or poverty,” she says. “I know that there is hope and healing from trauma of the past. It takes people willing to lean in to make a difference. I am thankful God has allowed me to be that woman.”

marIlyn l. raTkIn: Social JuSticE

In Mississippi early in the 1950s, an 8-year-old Marilyn L. Ratkin first saw signs of segregation: “Whites Only” or “Colored Only” appeared on drinking fountains everywhere from bathrooms to movie theaters. “I knew it was wrong for people to be treated differently because of their skin color,” she says. That defining moment planted a seed in Ratkin, and she grew up to pursue social justice through volunteering. Through the years, Ratkin has lived out her life’s calling by supporting social justice organizations including the National Council of Jewish Women, which works to advance social and economic justice for all women, children and families. “This mission speaks to me, as we not only provide direct services but also advocate for those who are unable to advocate for themselves,” she says.

Early childhood literacy is another cause close to Ratkin’s heart. This passion led her to become a reader for Ready Readers, a local nonprofit that inspires preschool-age children from low-income communities to become readers. “Children must learn to read so that they can read to learn,” Ratkin says. As for her future volunteer efforts, Ratkin says she plans to continue to advocate for social justice for people of every age and ethnicity, all while keeping in mind her favorite quote from children’s rights activist Marian Wright Edelman: “You are not obliged to win. You are obliged to keep trying to do the best you can every day.”

impactful lEadErShip Risa Zwerling Wrighton has a special place in her heart for kids – including all 7,000 undergraduates at Washington University in St. Louis. The university “mom” is involved in a multitude of student support programs, including one of her creation: Home Plate, where students are paired with local families to give them a “touch of home away from home” through dinners and events. Since 2001, more than 350 families have hosted students. “The families love it, and the students love it,” Wrighton says. For more than 25 years, Wrighton also has spent time with kids at Our Little Haven, a St. Louis-based nonprofit providing therapeutic day care, family counseling and foster care support services to young victims of abuse and neglect. “I have seen many of the Haven children grow up to enjoy a bright future,” she says. Wrighton’s latest volunteer effort was influenced by supporting another child, 9-year-old Chelsea Harris, whom she mentored through the St. Louis-based program Discovering Options. “It was a rocky road, yet an enormously fulfilling one, helping this young person cope with more issues than any child should have to face,” Wrighton says. “She was starting to thrive as a student at Lift For Life Academy, [but] a few months short of her 17th birthday, she was murdered on the streets of South City on her way to a part-time job after school.” From that tragedy, Wrighton forged a collaboration with Missouri Rep. Stacey Newman and Becky Morgan, Missouri chapter president of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, leading to the establishment of St. Louis Area Violence Prevention Commission, a commission of close to 50 local agencies working toward gun-violence prevention and intervention. “We can learn a lot from the children of America coming together to do what the grown-ups have failed to do – keep them safe from gun violence,” Wrighton says. “It may take a generation, but we will get it right. Savvy Surrounding Style is revamping its showroom to focus more on interior design in 2018.

ince 2010, Ladue’s Savvy Surrounding Style has been providing St. Louis with all things home: from gorgeous couches to lively holiday décor to dynamic artwork. The store has also been a full-service design firm since its inception, working with clients to help create their dream spaces. In 2018, though, Savvy is honing its focus on its design services. The Savvy team is currently in the process of completely updating and remodeling the showroom, and the new and improved space will be unveiled in mid-May. Savvy owner Diane Fogerty is excited for what this revamped effort will be able to bring to the area. She notes that since Savvy added commercial design last year, its design services have really taken off, which led the Savvy team to dial back on the retail end and emphasize another aspect. “We’ve revamped our showroom with new lines that aren’t generally available anywhere else in St. Louis,” Fogerty says. “We’re going to have a lot more product that will enhance the

experience. We offer very unique pieces to enhance our customers’ homes. Sometimes that key element is all you need to complete a project.” The new and improved Savvy will feature a brand-new design library and facility where Savvy designers will be able to interact with their clients and to present design plans, including renderings and 3-D models to help with visualization. “The updated studio will make the process easier for our clients through the selection and decision-making process,” she says. When customers step through the doors of the remodeled space, Fogerty hopes they’ll be inspired by the atmosphere it provides. She’s traveled all over the country seeking the best pieces for the new showroom and is enthusiastic about what she’s found. “Our first goal for this new space is to bring new looks to the St. Louis marketplace, which is why I traveled so much looking for lines of furniture and accessories,” Fogerty says. “When you visit the West and East coasts and

realize there’s so much out there that isn’t readily available [in St. Louis], we’re looking to bring the newer trends to this area.” She notes the incorporation of metallics and faux hides in Savvy’s new pieces, along with “great pieces for mantels and bookcases, coffee tables and exciting new lighting.” Fogerty even found a light fixture made out of feathers in Las Vegas. “The use of color right now in design is exciting to me,” she says. “It used to be the neutrals weren’t very interesting.

You had your beige, your ivory … Now there [are] so many new neutrals, like navy and even metallic.” She’s seeing this resurgence of color on ceilings, in patterns and in wallpaper – which she notes is making a huge comeback. “It’s unbelievable what you can do with wallpaper,” she says. Fogerty also notes the importance of lighting, saying it’s “not just a function, it’s a design element.” “There are so many ways to enhance a room by lighting it correctly,” she adds. When it comes to overall style and themes, Fogerty says the trend of mixing styles has become a revolution. “Not everything has to be the same style,” she says.

“Choose pieces you love, and put them together. You don’t have to fit in a box.” To celebrate the store’s reopening, Fogerty and her team are planning on hosting a grand opening event, along with an invite-only open for past clients. “We’re so excited about the opening,” she says. “Everyone wants to update their look in spring and summer and dust everything off. It’s a great time for us to be reopening.” Savvy will be taking walk-ins for design services from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays and by appointment the other days of the week. The team features three full-time designers, two full-time projects managers, a design assistant and a full-time

manager and accountant. Fogerty also hopes to hire an intern this summer, too, citing that she likes to work with up-and-comers in St. Louis’ design community. When it comes to design services, Fogerty says Savvy is able to stand out because it doesn’t have a “look.” “Our look is our clients’ look,” she says. “A lot of firms have a specific look, but ours is whatever the client wants it to be. At the end of the day, someone else is going to enjoy it, so we want it to be what [he or she] is looking for. rdinary is boring. There’s enough ordinary in the world.” So says Jenny Rausch, designer and co-owner of Karr Bick Kitchen & Bath. Since buying the venerable design and remodeling company in 2006, Rausch and her husband, Todd, have made it their mission to create – and to be – “nothing ordinary.” “For us, ‘nothing ordinary’ simply means striving to be the best in whatever you do and to be present in the moment,” explains Rausch. The “nothing ordinary” ethos infuses every aspect of Karr Bick, from the way the company cares for its employees to its partnerships with clients to its trademark inventive spaces. “We’re family-oriented people,” stresses Rausch. “Our employees are our family – our Karr Bick family. I think that if you give your employees the freedom to take care of their families, they’re not only happier people, but also better at their jobs and will work harder for their clients.” Equipped with a talented team of designers and carpenters, Karr Bick is a full-service operation that can handle an entire project, from conception to sourcing materials to installation and completion. “We will work with a team, but we can do it all on our own,” states Rausch. “We’re problem-solvers at heart. Whether it’s an issue with your layout, a complicated color combination or an unexpected pipe – we can handle it. We supply everything, down to the handles and knobs.” That can-do spirit and flexibility extends to the company’s aesthetic. Karr Bick’s designers are multilingual, fluent in a diverse array of modes that

includes French Country, cottage and contemporary. “We’ve all flexed our muscles in different styles,” notes Rausch. “It’s a collaborative process with our clients. We get a chance to play and to go on a dream ride with them.” Regardless of style, the resulting spaces are united by an almost indescribable quality, which is palpable upon entry. “We hear it all the time, especially on house tours,” says Rausch. “People will say to us, ‘we knew it was a Karr Bick kitchen!’” Rausch attributes this feeling to the company’s family focus. “It trickles down into our projects,” she observes. “I think that if you had to encapsulate what we do, it’s that we create spaces that feel like home. There’s a sense of coziness in whatever we design. Our spaces are not museum pieces. They are places in which you can see yourself living.” Having recently undergone a massive renovation of her own Kirkwood residence, Rausch acknowledges the stress that such an undertaking can cause families. She advises prospective clients to do their homework first. Many customers arrive at Karr Bick by way of its website, which is filled with before-and-after photos, process breakdowns and informational videos. After reviewing these materials, clients can then schedule a complimentary initial design

This year was no contest, though, as 4-year-old Amelia Daly stole the hearts of LN readers to become the 2018 Ladue News Lil’ One winner! Amelia is described by her mother, Toni, as a “spitfire” – surely a requirement when the younger sister of three brothers. Amelia loves all animals, especially zebras, rabbits and puppies. She even has her own puppy, a Frenchton (a French bulldog and Boston terrier mix) she named June Bug. According to Toni, Amelia thinks she is June Bug’s trainer and “trains her to do anything she wants.” Amelia loves animals so much that when she grows up, she wants to be a “vet doctor.” Amelia also loves going on vacations, especially to Chicago, where she can visit the American Girl store. The tartness and sweetness inherent in cherries provide an ideal foil for savory flavors, so use the fruit fresh to make a glaze for chicken or the base of a salad dressing. This sautéed cherry and wilted vegetable salad incorporates cherries in two ways: sautéed whole, to add pops of color and flavor to the salad and then, through their juice, to coat and soften hearty cruciferous vegetables. This salad constitutes more than a side dish, though; very slightly cooking the shredded vegetables in a blend of fresh cherries, cherry juice and white balsamic vinegar results in a salad full of crunch and natural sweetness.

SAUTÉED CHERRY AND WILTED VEGETABLE SALAD To shred these hearty vegetables and greens easily and fast, use a mandolin. Also, feel free to use a different combination of veggies here – either different proportions of the ones listed or a new blend altogether. Other hearty vegetables and greens like cauliflower, arugula, bok choy, kohlrabi and radishes would work well. Serves | 4 |        

4 Tbsp white balsamic vinegar, divided 2 cups fresh, dark sweet cherries, pitted, seeds removed 1 cup Brussels sprouts, shredded 1 cup broccoli, shredded 1 cup red cabbage, shredded 1 cup green cabbage, shredded 1 cup kale, shredded ¼ cup crumbled goat cheese

| Preparation | In a large saucepan over medium heat, add 2 tablespoons of white balsamic vinegar and cherries. Sauté until cherries start to soften and cherry juice begins to thicken, 7 minutes. Add Brussels sprouts, broccoli, red and green cabbages, and kale, and sauté for an additional 2 minutes or until vegetables become wilted and slightly soft. Divide mixture evenly between 4 salad plates. Drizzle with remaining white balsamic vinegar, and top with crumbled goat cheese. Serve.

ONCE UPON A TIME, COURTNEY Keefe adopted a dog named Chloe from Open Door Animal Sanctuary. Keefe had Chloe for eight years before the pup was diagnosed with stage 4 bladder cancer in October 2017. About a month later, Keefe’s mother was diagnosed with stomach, liver, lung and pancreatic cancer. Chloe passed away this past January, and Keefe’s mother passed away slightly more than a month after Chloe. “It was a one-two punch,” Keefe says. In the process of grieving, but still trying to go about her daily life, Keefe went to Open Door, to which she makes regular donations, on April 7. She had browsed its adoptable dogs online, but told herself she wasn’t ready yet – until she saw Jewel. “I was taken in by her bio online,” Keefe says. “I called and asked specifically about her.” When Keefe arrived at Open Door, staff members asked if she would like to take Jewel for a walk. “[The Open Door staff] was blown away by how quickly we bonded,” Keefe recalls. “There was an instant connection. We’re perfect for each other.” Keefe took the 45-pound boxer/Lab mix home the same day. The pup had been at Open Door for 10 months and had a hard time at the shelter. She could be aggressive, had her guard up and “didn’t show well,” according to Keefe. She knew it wouldn’t be easy, but Keefe says she didn’t need an easy dog. “I needed a dog that was going to require attention and extra TLC,” she says. “I’m in a rough place right now, and coming home to an empty house after losing Chloe and then my mom was so hard. I was sad and removed. There was a void, but Jewel has filled that and then some. We picked each other.” Since adopting Jewel just a little more than a month ago, Keefe has divided her time between teaching at The Soulard School and tending to her new four-legged child. “She sleeps on the bed with me and has full run of the house,” Keefe says. “She still has her guard up a lot of the time, but she’s slowly letting it down. With me, she’s already let it down, but with other people, she’s still kind of cautious.”

Keefe says it’s impossible to keep fluffy squeaker toys in the house because Jewel “murders them.” The pup loves playing fetch, lounging, chasing squirrels and going for walks. The two are still figuring each other out, but Keefe knows Jewel is in her forever home. “The name just fit, because she’s a diamond in the rough,” Keefe says. “She got overlooked and had to be searched for. But the patience pays off, because I love her more every day.”

osmetic procedures are no longer taboo for men. These days, local plastic surgeons are seeing an increase in male patients pursuing minimally invasive cosmetic surgery, a practice that traditionally has been more common among women. At Washington University Facial Plastic Surgery Center in St. Louis, facial plastic surgeons Dr. Gregory Branham and Dr. John Chi are experiencing an uptick in men coming in for cosmetic consultations. “We have definitely seen more men who are more open to [cosmetic surgery],” Branham says. “It is becoming more acceptable, so more men are having procedures – maybe he has a spouse who is encouraging him, or he is in a [life] transition like divorce or changing jobs.” And nowadays, men are very informed and direct about what they want when it comes to cosmetic work, Chi explains. “Men tend to be more aware of changes and fear an overdone appearance, so they want the results to be very subtle and natural,” he says. The cosmetic procedure process typically begins with a consultation to determine the patient’s wants and needs and establish a treatment plan, which can include both noninvasive treatments and minimally invasive surgeries.

NoNiNvasive TreaTmeNTs At Ridenour Plastic Surgery in Creve Coeur, facial plastic surgeon Dr. Brock Ridenour says the most popular procedures are noninvasive treatments, such as Botox injections and injectable fillers. “They produce the subtle but noticeable results that men favor,” Ridenour says. “In women, fillers are used to create smooth skin and soft curves. In men, fillers are more often used to strengthen masculine [facial] features, such as angular cheekbones and a strong jaw line.” Botox also is the most common treatment men request at Washington University Facial Plastic Surgery Center. Male patients, typically around the age of 40 and older, often desire Botox in two facial areas, Chi explains: around the eyes to diminish smile lines and on the forehead to soften horizontal wrinkles. Treatments take approximately 15 minutes and need to be repeated every three to six months. Patients may return to work the same day and s can expect to see results in three to five days. Another popular procedure Ridenour performs is CoolSculpting, a noninvasive body contouring treatment that uses a handheld device to precisely freeze and destroy unwanted fat cells below the surface of the skin. “Men are using [CoolSculpting] to manage fat bulges in theirr flanks, chest omen,” he says. and abdomen,” “The procedure is completely noninvasive and does not involve needles, scalpels or cannulas [tubes]. In one or two painless sessions, men experience permanent fat reduction in areas that have been resistant to exercise and dieting.”

miNimally iNvasive surgeries Among the most popular minimally invasive cosmetic surgeries, men are seeking rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, brow lifts and facelifts, local plastic surgeons say. Rhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery, reshapes the nose to correct both function or aesthetic concerns. “Rhinoplasty is sometimes performed to correct a crooked nose deformity from sport-related trauma,” Ridenour says. “More recently, men also are seeking rhinoplasty to achieve better facial harmony and a more pleasing aesthetic appearance, often balancing a disproportionate nose with their chin and other facial features.” The procedure can last an hour to four hours and typically

involves about a week of downtime for patients, where they will have stitches in their nose and wear a cast, Chi explains, adding that some bruising and swelling usually is apparent for one to four weeks. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, takes about one to two hours to perform and entails about seven to 14 days of downtime for bruising and swelling to resolve. “Droopy eyelids make men look older, tired and less energetic,” Ridenour says. “Eyelid surgery removes excess skin from the upper eyelid and reduces puffiness and bags under the eyes that make men look worn and tired.” Another common procedure for men is a brow lift, which reduces both the horizontal wrinkle lines across the forehead and the vertical frown lines between the eyebrows, Chi says. The procedure typically lasts about an hour and a half and requires a week of downtime. Facelift operations, which lift and firm sagging facial tissues to restore a more naturally youthful facial appearance, also are slowly becoming more common among men, Ridenour says. In addition, more men are having breast reduction surgery to treat gynecomastia, which is swelling of the breast tissue caused by a hormone imbalance, he adds. The best candidate for any cosmetic procedure is a relatively healthy nonsmoker with no disabling medical conditions that can impair healing, Ridenour notes. “The most successful candidates have a positive outlook, realistic goals and are not risk averse,” he says. “It’s important that men choosing cosmetic surgery must accept the importance of taking the proper time to heal, and they must agree to remain inactive in the first several critical days following surgery.” Healing time varies according to several factors, including the patient’s age, his overall health and the extent and complexity of the procedure, he adds. As more men are becoming educated about cosmetic work, there is less stigma surrounding the subject, local plastic surgeons say. “Today’s men are more open about cosmetic surgery,” Branham says, “and they are less concerned about others knowing about a cosmetic procedure.” Washington University Facial Plastic Surgery Center, 1020 N. n iconic St. Louis dining destination recently reopened with a new operator, as the much-loved Boathouse at Forest Park officially debuted under the management of Sugarfire Events on April 25 with a full menu of appetizers, entrées, sandwiches and more. The venue received both a kitchen remodel and a contemporary revamp, with fresh paint and nautical photographs to accentuate the dining room’s classic aspects, like skylights and a double-sided fireplace. The bar menu will also include a selection of grab-and-go picnic-friendly items such as sandwiches, salads and cold appetizers. “We looked at what we had here, and tried to elevate the experience by completely utilizing everything this property has and how it should be used to really pay honor to the beauty of one of the most iconic landmarks in St. Louis,” says bar manager Dan Jameson, who also oversees the venue’s live entertainment. “We’re excited to give people a fulfilling experience with the Boathouse at Forest Park,” MacMurray concludes. “Great food, great music, great service, a beautiful atmosphere, an iconic bar and an iconic location.”

‌A considerable stretch separates Aida and Jersey Boys, but the distance between them underscores how central The Muny remains to the area arts scene. In 1917, The Municipal Opera of St. Louis, as The Muny originally was known, presented a weeklong run of Verdi’s classic opera Aida. Two years later, on June 6, 1919, a performance of Robin Hood began The Muny’s annual season at its showcase amphitheater in the heart of Forest Park. Since then, six generations of families have made The Muny a summer entertainment destination. This season’s series features two regional premieres (Jersey Boys and Jerome Robbins’ Broadway), with two family classics (Annie and The Wiz), two American musical staples (Gypsy and Singin’ in the Rain) and an iconic local story (Meet Me in St. Louis) also coming. To start the milestone season memorably, The Muny will stage two special events this month. Muny favorites Heather Headley and Matthew Morrison co-host An Evening With the Stars there at 9:15 p.m. on Friday, May 18. Two days later, The Muny holds its “Centennial Birthday Bash” from 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets for the first event start at $15, obtainable by visiting muny.org/100, with 1,500 free seats offered on a first-come, first-served basis. (Although the gala’s dinner portion sold out, many tickets remain for the show itself.) The centennial bash, meanwhile, is free, with some activities, Muny souvenirs and food available for purchase. “This will be a night of real Muny history,” says Muny artistic director and executive producer Mike Isaacson of the gala. “So many extraordinary talents will be joining us, and we’re working to create a show that we hope for the rest of your life, you’ll be able to say, ‘I was there.’” The season then starts with Jerome Robbins’ Broadway (June 11 to 17), starring Muny favorite Rob McClure (The Addams Family, Hello, Dolly!, Beauty and the Beast) and directed by Broadway veteran Cynthia Onrubia. Following it is The Wiz (June 19 to 25), directed by St. Louis Theater Circle winner Denis Jones (42nd Street, A Chorus Line, Chicago) and starring Nathan Lee Graham (Fox TV’s LA to Vegas), Jared Grimes, Mykal Kilgore and James T. Lane. Singin’ in the Rain, last seen at The Muny in 2011, runs from June 27 to July 3, with Marc Bruni directing. It showcases Broadway star Corbin Bleu, one-time Muny Kid Berklea Going and Jeffrey Schechter, who came to the rescue at the 11th hour for last season’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, enchanting Muny audiences with his performance as Pseudolus. Following that will be The Muny and world regional debut of Jersey Boys (July 9 to 16), directed and

choreographed by Josh Rhodes. Annie takes to The Muny stage for the first time since 2009 from July 18 to 25; directing it is John Tartaglia, seen at The Muny last season in A Funny Thing and a 13-year veteran performer on PBS’s Sesame Street. Christopher Sieber portrays Daddy Warbucks, with Jennifer Simard playing that dastardly orphanage villain Miss Hannigan. Rob Ruggiero, who’s directed The Music Man, Oklahoma!, South Pacific and The King and I at The Muny, returns to direct the classic musical Gypsy from July 27 to Aug. 2. Ralph Perkins choreographs the show, which features lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, music by Jule Styne and a book by Arthur Laurents. Closing the centennial season Aug. 4 to 12 is that perennial Muny favorite Meet Me in St. Louis, making its eighth appearance on the Forest Park stage and first since 2009. Marcia Milgrom Dodge directs, with choreography by Josh Walden (The Little Mermaid, Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story). Erin Dilly and her reallife husband, Stephen R. Buntrock, portray Mrs. Anna and Mr. Alonso Smith. This presentation includes several songs new to the stage adaptation of the show. The Muny’s centennial season, in short, features something familiar, something new and something pretty much for everyone to enjoy. One can understand why, in producing top-tier, Broadway-caliber shows on the sprawling stage of that impressive outdoor theater, before thousands of patrons on summer evenings in St. Louis, The Muny can proclaim that it’s “alone … in its greatness.”

onsider, if you will, the homophones coo (the pleased-sounding cry of a dove) and coup (a brilliant achievement) – as in the observation that the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis collectively may be cooing over a current coup. That coup, the free exhibition titled “Amy Sherald,” runs through Aug. 19 in CAM’s Front Room gallery. It constitutes the first major solo museum showcase of the painter who recently skyrocketed to fame with Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama, her official oil-onlinen depiction of this nation’s former first lady for the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery. Admittedly, the local exhibition (opening on the date this issue hits the stands) almost necessarily excludes that artistic marvel, following its Feb. 12 unveiling with Kehinde Wiley’s painting of former President Barack Obama. On general principles, though, a comment from Dorothy Moss – curator of painting and sculpture at the National Portrait Gallery, whose “20th Century Americans” exhibition Sherald’s striking painting of the ex-first lady now graces – suggests the level of interest potentially facing CAM, for reasons involving both empowerment and Sherald’s technique (grisaille, a monochromatic painting effect designed to suggest

three-dimensionality). “Museum attendance has increased dramatically since the Obama portraits were unveiled,” Moss relates. “I have especially noticed the excitement on the faces of young girls who come to see Michelle Obama’s portrait. “It’s a joy to watch how this portrait inspires and how community forms around the portrait. It’s also wonderful to listen to visitors engage in meaningful dialogue about portraiture while standing in front of Amy Sherald’s portrait of Michelle Obama.” Lisa Melandri, CAM’s executive director, organized “Amy Sherald” for the St. Louis institution. “CAM is a museum that loves its firsts, so the idea of extending an invitation to an Am extraordinarily talented artist to yS her have her first solo museum show with us ald was a perfect fit,” Melandri relates by way of providing background on the exhibition’s origin. “We like to be thought of as a launchpad for unheralded artistic vision.

“I first saw Amy Sherald’s work in 2016, and her singular power was immediately evident. A little more than a year ago, I made an inquiry to Amy about an intimate exhibition at CAM, and I was absolutely delighted when she accepted. With her recent recognition, I feel it’s terrific that more people can see and know her exceptional work.” With regard to staging the exhibition, Melandri unstintingly praises Monique Meloche Gallery, which has long fostered Sherald’s artistry. “It’s a great pleasure to work on any project with Monique,” she says of the Chicago institution’s namesake. “Her gallery is known for maintaining attentive and supportive long-term relationships with their artists. I also think it’s important to acknowledge that Monique knew this was good work before Amy received broader recognition. Monique has been incredibly helpful at every stage of this exhibition.” Although a request for a brief interview with Sherald went unanswered, Melandri, more or less in passing, explains why – the artist is both exacting and quite busy. “Part of the reason we thought of doing an intimate exhibition was from taking into account that Amy makes [only] 10 to 12 paintings a year, and she wanted to create new work especially for the show,” she says. “With new works as the exhibition centerpiece, we

were also interested in including works with single figures, the more rare works with two figures, as well as a combination of portraits at the 4½- by 3½-foot size she usually employs along with larger-scale works. So even with a small presentation of paintings, you get a range of her stylistic choices and the range of her sitters, all completed in just the last three years.” When asked to name her personal favorite among the pieces in “Amy Sherald,” Melandri waffles just a bit, perhaps understandably. “That’s an incredibly difficult question to answer, because every work in the exhibition is moving and appealing, which is why they’ve been selected,” she says. “I think A clear unspoken granted magic shows Sherald’s signature style – the exacting rendering of the young woman’s face against the monochrome background combined with the bold geometric patterning in her clothing.” Melandri also sketches information about a CAM document to commemorate the exhibition: “It’ll be a modest publication featuring an in-depth interview with Amy and documentation of the exhibition. We decided to include an interview so that Amy’s vision and voice would be central.” To highlight CAM’s achievement even further, it will take two years for Sherald to enjoy what’s been characterized as “a major retrospective” in her own hometown, under Christopher Bedford, director at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Nonetheless, almost necessarily, he shares Melandri’s general enthusiasm for Sherald’s work and the specific enthusiasm of the portrait pilgrims mentioned by Moss. “I think portraiture by black American artists occupies an extraordinarily important position in contemporary culture,” Bedford says. “Museums nationwide are searching for ways to represent communities of people traditionally unrepresented on museum walls. “As if in response to this, artists like Amy Sherald have made great strides in reinventing portraiture for a new audience in 2018. The survey exhibition of her work being organized by the BMA examines almost 15 years of portrait painting.
