Conservation can feel like an abstract idea. Important, but distant.
In the cloud forests of Ecuador, that idea becomes tangible: muddy boots, long nights, and careful data collection in one of the world’s most diverse ecosystems.
For Justin Elden, director of the Center for Ecuadorian Amphibian Conservation at the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Institute, field work on the slopes of the Andes follows a steady rhythm of heavy rainfall and disciplined note taking,

all coated in a thick layer of mud. It’s demanding work, but Elden says everything that happens in the field connects directly back to the Zoo’s classrooms and habitats.
On a conservation trip to Ecuador this fall, Elden says one moment captured this connection perfectly.
While monitoring a mountain stream, Elden witnessed a pair of critically endangered long-snouted harlequin toads breeding in the wild. What made the encounter extraordinary was that the pair had been previously released by Zoo conservation partners. Once considered extinct in the wild, very few wild individuals remain for this species today. If successful, the toads’ offspring could help rebuild this incredibly fragile population and renew hope for the species. It’s a dream come true for conservationists in the field. International conservation might seem worlds away from the bustling sidewalks of Forest Park. But back in St. Louis, these experiences directly influence animal care. Microhabitat conditions for reptiles and amphibians are complex and easily misunderstood. Elden’s notes from Ecuador sharpen the Zoo’s understanding of wild environments, informing habitat design and husbandry practices at the Charles H. Hoessle Herpetarium.
To Elden, this work is critical to connect Zoo guests with not only animals, but also their survival in the wild. When guests know their experiences at the Zoo support efforts to protect species and ecosystems, it adds a richer, deeper meaning to the visit.
Reversing biodiversity loss depends on long-term, collaborative partnerships across borders, just like the one between Saint Louis Zoo and Centro Jambatu – the amphibian conservation group that has played a key role in advancing research and efforts to curb frog extinction.
In Ecuador and in St. Louis, these relationships are important reminders of what’s possible through patience, partnership, and persistence towards goals that once seemed abstract.

For today’s families, raising healthy, confident, and well-balanced children is a top priority. The habits formed in childhood shape a child’s future wellbeing, resilience, and relationship with their bodies. As childhood obesity continues to rise in the U.S. – now affecting nearly one in five children, according to the CDC – many families are embracing proactive wellness, choosing to build strong foundations long before challenges arise.
Wellness is far more than a number on a scale. Children flourish when supported physically, mentally, and emotionally. Consistent daily habits help children develop the energy and confidence they need to thrive. So, where should parents begin? Fortunately, small, intentional routines can make all the difference.
The 5-2-1-0 rule is a simple guide designed to help kids feel their best each day:

5 servings of colorful fruits and vegetables to fuel learning and play
2 hours or less of recreational screen time to support focus and social engagement
1 hour of active movement to build strong bodies and reduce stress
0 sugar-sweetened beverages to support long-term health
These habits not only support physical wellness but also contribute to healthier sleep patterns, improved mood, and better academic performance. For many parents, these daily choices reflect larger values: prioritizing balance and connection and cultivating lifelong well-being.
If your child is struggling, it’s important to find programs that fit your lifestyle and focus on the whole child – not just weight. Whether your goal is to reinforce healthy eating habits, encourage joyful movement, support emotional well-being, or simply ensure your child grows up confident and resilient, ask your

pediatrician for expert guidance tailored to your family’s needs.
Investing in wellness today lays the foundation for the strong, vibrant, and thriving adults our children will become tomorrow.
Dr. Manasi Hulyalkar is a Mercy pediatrician board-certified in obesity medicine who leads the Mercy Kids Weight and Wellness program. The new program includes a multidisciplinary team that comprises a registered dietician, physical therapist, psychologist, and bariatric surgeon and offers families a comprehensive, supportive program that focuses on the whole child.

By this time of year, you’re likely desperate to escape the cold, dry air and the havoc it wreaks on your skin. Those jetting off to somewhere warm and sunny are in for a treat, and for best results, start preparing now to get a healthy spring break glow. Those staying local need not be stuck with dry, dull skin either – these products and services can provide a fresh-off-the-beach look right here in the Lou.
Every skincare routine should include a gentle cleanser and moisturizer as the bare minimum. A light moisturizer in the morning will suffice, but at night, use something thicker like the Pearl + Rosewater Hydrating Night Cream by Lark Skin Co., even if only temporarily to restore winter-worn skin. Exfoliating a couple times per week can help shed dead, flaky skin and allow moisturizers to work more efficiently, so reach for the Jojoba + Turmeric Facial Polish at the end of a shower. For brighter skin and anti-aging benefits, try the Tulsi + Rose Calming Facial Toner, followed by the Aloe + Willow Bark Vitamin C Serum each morning.
Lark Skin Co., larkskinco.com

helps you feel at home by the pool or beach, then try sunless tanning. Local salons like Sunset Skin are already booking spray tans ahead of this spring, so prebook or join a waitlist now. A day or two before your spray tan, prepare by showering, exfoliating with a dry brush, and shaving. Avoid lotions – or really any product that might interfere with the tanning solution – on the day of the appointment, and heed the after-care advice for longer lasting results.

Whether basking in the sun on vacation or taking a walk at a local park, experts recommend wearing sunscreen or moisturizer with SPF to protect skin from damaging UV rays. Aim for broad-spectrum protection of at least 30 SPF, and reapply regularly according to the product’s instructions. RFA Skincare by Raquel Aesthetics & Wellness offers sheer, tinted, and powder SPF products with hydrating ingredients that layer well with makeup. Don’t forget about your scalp and lips, either – liquid or powder sunscreen is sufficient for the scalp, but for your lips, try the Colorescience Peptide Lip Shine with SPF 30 at The Saint Louis Med Spa for a boost in color and shape.
The more sun exposure you accumulate, the quicker your skin will age, and the higher your risk will be for developing skin cancer. A base tan, or early seasonal exposure, can do more harm than good, but if it

At Nicky Slices Pizza Club, chef Nick Williams worked diligently to develop what he’s successfully coined as “The Coolest Club in the World.” The St. Louis native established his “hella good Detroit-style pizza” brand in 2020, quickly becoming a local viral sensation for creative preorder take-and-bake pies via Instagram. With a new brick and mortar on The Hill that debuted to long lines of enthusiastic pizza lovers last fall, he offers a high-energy home base to regularly serve a menu of eye-catching scratch-made savory pies and mouthwatering appetizers.
Williams got early industry experience lending a hand at his father’s South City pizza shop, Natty’s. After graduating with a degree in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia, he moved to New York to become a graphic design intern at Complex magazine. During this period, he gravitated back towards the kitchen, working up the ranks at a seafood restaurant called Littleneck and soon thereafter aspiring to open an eatery of his own in the big city.
The pandemic and familial ties re-routed the seasoned cook back to his hometown, where he saw an opportunity to put both his well-honed kitchen and design skills to good use. Williams moonlit as a private chef, dropping off mini lasagnas and take-and-bake pizzas to clients. When the high demand circled back to him, he knew he’d found a calling to market the perfected product online.
“To me, the real non-negotiable hallmark of Detroit-style pizza is the

crispy cheese crust, or frico,” Williams says. “Our crust is pretty fluffy. We go for a big oven rise and want it to be light, like a taller focaccia. The simplicity is what makes it beautiful.” The airy base provides a sturdy canvas for an endless amount of fun flavor profiles, such as The Roner – an instant classic topped with thick-cut pepperoni cups, basil, red sauce, and a healthy drizzle of garlic chili hot honey. Another popular pick, Dumps Like a Truck, features an inventive combination of pork and chives dumpling sausage, with Sriracha mayo, crispy onion, garlic, and ponzu.
The Hill’s exciting new pizzeria features a striking brick façade painted black and emblazoned with Nicky Slices’ neon pink graffiti-style logo – a signature that’s as electric as what the kitchen crew cooks up inside (to a live DJ on Saturdays, to boot). And with enticing items such as housemade crispy thin-crust pizzas and Philly cheesesteaks on the horizon, the popularity of Nicky Slices Pizza Club – with its tens of thousands of followers – is on the rise and shows no signs of slowing down.
Nicky Slices Pizza Club is open Wednesday through Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Saturdays from 4 to 10 p.m. or until sold out.

CARITAS FAMILY SOLUTIONS
On February 21, Caritas Family Solutions hosted its Heart & Soul Annual Gala at The Regency O’Fallon, Ill., supporting the organization’s child and family services and community programs. Guests joined for cocktails and tapas while perusing silent auction displays. Event host, Michelle Li, gave a warm welcome and opening remarks over dinner, followed by agency updates and award ceremony from staff, Hope Carbonaro and Anne Riley. This year’s Heart & Soul Award recipients were Sandy Tutka, Mary Barchet and Lisa Maurer of Farm Girl Finds boutique in Waterloo, Ill., for their continued efforts toward Human Support Services.

“The Heart & Soul Gala is one of the most meaningful nights of the year for our organization because it brings together people who truly care about our neighbors in need. The generosity we see that evening directly supports the children and families we serve and reminds us that we are not doing this work alone.”
