Field Notes From ECUADOR

Conservation can feel like an abstract idea.  Important, but distant.

In the cloud forests of Ecuador, that  idea becomes tangible: muddy boots, long  nights, and careful data collection in one of the  world’s most diverse ecosystems.

For Justin Elden, director of the Center for  Ecuadorian Amphibian Conservation at the Saint  Louis Zoo WildCare Institute, field work on the  slopes of the Andes follows a steady rhythm  of heavy rainfall and disciplined note taking,

all coated in a thick layer of mud. It’s demanding  work, but Elden says everything that happens in  the field connects directly back to the Zoo’s  classrooms and habitats.

On a conservation trip to Ecuador this  fall, Elden says one moment captured this  connection perfectly.

While monitoring a mountain stream,  Elden witnessed a pair of critically  endangered long-snouted harlequin toads  breeding in the wild. What made the  encounter extraordinary was that the pair had  been previously released by Zoo conservation  partners. Once considered extinct in the wild,  very few wild individuals remain for this species  today. If successful, the toads’ offspring could help  rebuild this incredibly fragile population and renew hope  for the species. It’s a dream come true for conservationists in the field. International conservation might seem worlds away from the bustling  sidewalks of Forest Park. But back in St. Louis, these experiences directly  influence animal care. Microhabitat conditions for reptiles and amphibians  are complex and easily misunderstood. Elden’s notes from Ecuador  sharpen the Zoo’s understanding of wild environments, informing habitat  design and husbandry practices at the Charles H. Hoessle Herpetarium.

To Elden, this work is critical to connect Zoo guests with not only  animals, but also their survival in the wild. When guests know their  experiences at the Zoo support efforts to protect species and ecosystems,  it adds a richer, deeper meaning to the visit.

Reversing biodiversity loss depends on long-term, collaborative  partnerships across borders, just like the one between Saint Louis Zoo and  Centro Jambatu – the amphibian conservation group that has played a key  role in advancing research and efforts to curb frog extinction.

In Ecuador and in St. Louis, these relationships are important  reminders of what’s possible through patience, partnership, and  persistence towards goals that once seemed abstract.

Raising Thriving Kids

For today’s families, raising healthy,  confident, and well-balanced children  is a top priority. The habits formed in  childhood shape a child’s future wellbeing, resilience, and relationship with their  bodies. As childhood obesity continues to rise  in the U.S. – now affecting nearly one in five  children, according to the CDC – many families  are embracing proactive wellness, choosing  to build strong foundations long before  challenges arise.

Wellness is far more than a number on  a scale. Children flourish when supported  physically, mentally, and emotionally. Consistent  daily habits help children develop the energy  and confidence they need to thrive. So, where  should parents begin? Fortunately, small,  intentional routines can make all the difference.

The 5-2-1-0 rule is a simple guide designed to  help kids feel their best each day:

„ 5 servings of colorful fruits and vegetables  to fuel learning and play

„ 2 hours or less of recreational screen time  to support focus and social engagement

„ 1 hour of active movement to build strong  bodies and reduce stress

„ 0 sugar-sweetened beverages to support  long-term health

These habits not only support physical  wellness but also contribute to healthier sleep  patterns, improved mood, and better academic  performance. For many parents, these daily  choices reflect larger values: prioritizing  balance and connection and cultivating  lifelong well-being.

If your child is struggling, it’s important  to find programs that fit your lifestyle and  focus on the whole child – not just weight.  Whether your goal is to reinforce healthy eating  habits, encourage joyful movement, support  emotional well-being, or simply ensure your  child grows up confident and resilient, ask your

pediatrician for expert guidance tailored to  your family’s needs.

Investing in wellness today lays the  foundation for the strong, vibrant, and thriving  adults our children will become tomorrow.

CARITAS FAMILY SOLUTIONS

Heart & Soul Annual Gala

On February 21, Caritas Family Solutions hosted its Heart & Soul Annual Gala at The Regency O’Fallon, Ill., supporting the organization’s child and family services and community programs. Guests joined for cocktails and tapas while perusing silent auction displays. Event host, Michelle Li, gave a warm welcome and opening remarks over dinner, followed by agency updates and award ceremony from staff, Hope Carbonaro and Anne Riley. This year’s Heart & Soul Award recipients were Sandy Tutka, Mary Barchet and Lisa Maurer of Farm Girl Finds boutique in Waterloo, Ill., for their continued efforts toward Human Support Services.

“The Heart & Soul Gala is one of the most meaningful nights of the year for our organization because it brings together people who truly care about our neighbors in need. The generosity we see that evening directly supports the children and families we serve and reminds us that we are not doing this work alone.”
