St. Louisâ role as the âgateway to the westâ has certainly evolved over the years, but itâs always inspiring to see the ways in which global influences converge in our city.
A prime example is Square One Gallery, a new contemporary art showroom whose three founders met in New York City and are now seeking to bring their international connections to art appreciators in the Central West End. Contributing writer Bethany Christo explores how the gallery is uplifting artistic voices both from the metro and abroad on p. 50.
Another hub of artistic greatness is the famed Muny, which is currently preparing to kick off its 2024 season. Contributor Andrea Smith sat down with the Munyâs artistic director Mike Isaacson, who discusses all the musical magic we have to look forward to on p. 56.
And while St. Louis draws in talent from around the world, it is also serving as a launchpad for students ready to expand their horizons. Show Me the World, as featured by columnist Drew Gieseke on p. 16, is a local nonprofit giving students from underserved areas the opportunity to travel internationally, among many other student development efforts. And on p. 60, Smith returns to feature Gianna Francis, the Ladue Horton Watkins High School senior who earned a Congressional Award after logging hundreds of hours in public service and personal development.
Happy exploring,
Ashley Klein, Managing Editor

HAnD, FOOT AnD MOuTH DISeASe IN KIDS
By Dr. Heather Joyce
While winter is typically known as flu season, cases of hand, foot and mouth disease typically increase during summer.
Unlike foot-and-mouth disease, which affects farm animals, this illness in children is a mild viral infection causing fever, mouth sores and a rash.
Hand, foot and mouth disease is caused by a virus that thrives in warm weather, making it most common from spring to fall in Missouri, though it can occur year-round in tropical climates. The disease primarily affects young children, spreading through direct contact with saliva and stool.
It starts with a fever and is followed by a sore throat, drooling and a rash. The rash is characterized by red, raised bumps or blisters on the hands and feet. In my opinion, it should be called hand, foot, mouth and bottom disease, because I see diaper rash as a symptom just as commonly as the rash on the hands and feet.
Children with this illness may experience fatigue, fussiness, a runny nose, vomiting and diarrhea. Due to the stomach upset and mouth sores, young children often refuse to eat and drink. The illness usually lasts seven to 10 days, with the fever persisting for two to three days. Preventing dehydration is crucial for parents to keep in mind when their children have hand, foot and mouth disease.
Here are my tips for keeping your child comfortable and hydrated during this common illness:
Ibuprofen or acetaminophen â give an appropriate dose for your childâs weight as needed for fever and pain (including feeding refusal). If your child will not swallow medicine by mouth, ask your pediatrician about the rectal form of acetaminophen that works well.
Offer fluids at all times, including breastmilk, formula, milk, Pedialyte,
Gatorade, water, popsicles, ice cubes and ice cream. Basically, anything they will drink!
 Avoid spicy and acidic foods/drinks.
 Offer soft, easy-to-swallow foods.
HOME REMEDIES
Salt-water rinses for older children are helpful for pain. Mix half a teaspoon of salt with 1 cup of warm water, then have the child swish and spit as needed.
Magic mouthwash â made by mixing equal parts of Maalox (Aluminum Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide) and Benadryl (diphenhydramine). Drop into the mouth or place in the mouth with a cotton swab. Mixing 5 ml of Maalox with 5 ml of Benadryl is the best way to make this. Use 1 ml on the sores every 6 hours.
Gly-oxide is another over-the-counter product that cleans and coats the ulcers well.
I do not recommend mouth-numbing gels (like Orajel) during this illness, because of the large amount needed to numb all the sores and the short-lived relief. There are also rare but serious side effects from using too much of this medication.
Unfortunately, there is no antibiotic or medication to shorten the length of the illness. Seek medical care if your child is refusing to drink, has decreased urination, has dry mouth or if you are concerned about dehydration.

in the Back Game
By Charlotte Renner
According to a report from the Rapid Transition Alliance, the global sports sector contributes the same level of emissions as a medium-sized country. One part of that is sport-related waste. Instead of throwing your old sports gear in the trash, donate it to one of these organizations in St. Louis. By promoting sustainable practices, youâll positively impact the lives of local youth and families by giving them access to sports equipment like bikes, apparel, safety equipment, balls and more.
ST. LOUIS BWORKS
For many, riding a bike is an integral part of childhood. St. Louis BWorks makes this dream a reality for local children through its Earna-Bike class. Kids learn about bike safety and maintenance, and at the end of the class, they get to take home their own bike. Bike donations help this program thrive â if your child has outgrown their old bike or you have bike equipment collecting dust in the garage, you can donate it to BWorksâ Soulard location, The Alpine Shop, Billy Goat Bicycle Company or The Hub Bicycle Company. BWorks accepts bikes in any condition, and donations are tax-deductible. Be sure to fill out the donation form on BWorksâ website (bworks.org/donate/donate-bikes) before dropping off your bike.
BWorks, 2414 Menard St., St. Louis, bworks.org
PASSBACK
Passback provides free, high-quality gear to families and youth in underserved communities. One of Passbackâs core missions is to extend
the life of sports gear as long as possible by upcycling and repurposing donations. This solution creates a sustainable circular economy for sports equipment, resulting in less waste and more play. Passback accepts gear in any condition, including balls, gloves, cleats, helmets, matching uniforms, sports brand clothing, water bottles and fan gear. You can find a full list of accepted items on Passbackâs website. As a bonus, if a donated item is at the end of its life, Passback will responsibly recycle it for you.
Passback, 4818 Washington Blvd., St. Louis, 314-795-8321, passback-official.org
STL YOUTH SPORTS OUTREACH
Thereâs no question about it: Sports equipment is expensive. To make sports more accessible for all St. Louis children, STL Youth Sports Outreach provides lightly used sports equipment to children who need it most, promoting an active and healthy lifestyle. When children need larger sizes of their sports gear, they can use the trade-in program to turn in their old equipment to get the size they need. STL Youth Sports Outreach accepts dropbox donations at the rear of its building in Overland, Missouri.
St. Louis Sports Outreach, 9424 Everman Ave., Overland, sites.google.com/view/stlyso
FIRST TEE
At First Tee, itâs all about empowering kids and teens through the game of golf. First Tee is a youth development organization that integrates essential life skills with golf lessons. First Tee of Greater St. Louis offers programs at local golf courses, elementary schools and youth centers. Your used golf gear can make all the difference for this program. Through the 2nd Swing Club Donation program, your old golf clubs and equipment are converted into a cash donation to fund the program. It accepts golf clubs, balls, apparel, range finders and more. You can find more information on how to donate on First Teeâs website.

Finding New Friends
By Sheila Oliveri
Summer is a great time to meet new friends. In the coming months, kids have time to engage in simple childhood pleasures like flopping belly-first into the grass to look for bugs, searching for animals in a sky of fluffy clouds and rounding up neighbors for outdoor games. Ready Readers suggests the book âHide and Seekâ by Polly Noakes to spark imagination and conversation.
The story begins in a lush meadow teeming with wildflowers. Four friends â a bear, a bunny, a raccoon and a little girl â scamper to their favorite tree to begin the game. As the child hides her eyes and starts counting, readers glimpse a wolf following the child as she searches for her trusted trio of mates, oblivious to the creature lurking behind her. As she searches, readers are anxious to know the intentions of the wolf, whose expressions have grown increasingly menacing.
After a long and unsuccessful search for her buddies, the girl announces, âI give up! Itâs my turn to hide now. Come and find me!â During the ensuing hunt for the child, the trio are shocked to discover the wolf tracking their movements. The suspense grows as the four animals confront each other and the friends express concern for the girlâs safety. The unexpected ending provides an opportunity to discuss a myriad of childhood issues including strangers, safety and common misconceptions, as well as the importance of giving individuals a chance to show their true colors.
Noakesâ rich watercolor illustrations depict the serenity and innocence of the scene. The simple, sparse text invites young readers to focus on the pictures, searching for each of the characters hidden in the grasses and wildflowers as the story unfolds to its satisfying ending.
Ready Readers brings the joy and power of literacy to more than 15,000 children from economically suppressed neighborhoods across the St. Louis area through weekly interactive story times facilitated by community volunteers. Visit readyreaders.org to learn how you can join in the fun!

the AroundWORLD
By Drew Gieseke
Sometimes, all it takes to change someoneâs life is to show them whatâs possible. The Show Me the World Project is doing just that by providing youth from under-resourced communities with multicultural experiences abroad and entrepreneurship workshops.
âOur program is structured with a robust curriculum that ranges in a variety of topics designed to develop holistic students,â says Show Me the World Project cofounder and executive director Samantha Lurie Carroll. âWe like to say that weâre developing global travelers and leaders with a strong foundation in entrepreneurship and STEM.â
Show Me The World Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2012 after a group of Vashon High School students participated in a school swap with one of the most affluent high schools in the area. At the time of writing, minority enrollment at Vashon is 100 percent, and 99 percent of students are economically disadvantaged, according to U.S. News and World Report. During the school swap, Vashon students witnessed how different schools were for kids only a couple ZIP codes away, including their classrooms, available courses and science supplies.
âA lot of educational funding is based on the cost of the houses in the area and the taxes people are paying, so students just arenât exposed to as many learning opportunities in schools that donât have [comparable] resources and funding,â Carroll says. âThese inequities were illuminated during this school swap experience, and it really turned their advocacy on fire.â
One element of the educational experience that stood out was access to international learning opportunities. The Vashon students fundraised for
a trip to Costa Rica, where they learned about science, culture and more. Since then, Show Me the World students have taken nine trips to Central and South America, including Nicaragua, Panama and Ecuador (their June 2024 excursion).
But thereâs more to it than simply traveling â students attend weekly workshops on STEM subjects and pick up entrepreneurship and leadership skills that are applied to Show Me the Worldâs specialty coffee shop, which doubles as one of the organizationâs key fundraising activities. (The shop also accepts donations.) Participants learn how to roast beans, import and export coffee, sell at farmers markets and more.
âWe use coffee as a tool to increase educational outcomes,â Show Me the World cofounder and managing director Sylvester Chisom says. âItâs incredible how itâs worked out.â
Show Me the Worldâs results have been remarkable participating Vashon High students from the first two years of the program increased their GPAs by 50 percent, and 90 percent scored at the proficient or advanced levels on the biology state exam compared to the 7 percent of the total school population that scored proficient.
Of the participating students, Chisom says: âThey just exude confidence. Their presence, their poise â theyâre raising their hands for leadership opportunities like class president and other experiences. They decide to own their own businesses. This is a framework theyâve learned: to set an audacious goal and find success in that. It does something for them.â

Lavish Living
By Alecia Humphreys
This once dark and dated space is now a lavish, modern living room thanks to the designer behind the eponymous Karen Korn Interiors.
âWe wanted this room to feel connected to the rest of the house, which is light and airy, but also have an independent feel,â Korn says. âWe started with a color without veering too far from the overall sensibility of the house, which we describe as modern traditional.â
Korn incorporated an array of materials, textures and patterns (like the gorgeous grasscloth wall covering, for instance) that all contribute to the cohesive color scheme.
âIt feels tailored and sophisticated while adding some whimsy with the flower art,â Korn says.
Without a doubt, Kornâs favorite aspect of this project is the game table.
âThe game table was their grandmotherâs,â Korn says. âWe painted the set and reupholstered the chairs. The thread that ties the new to the old fills the space with a loving energy and reminds our clients of the memories that fill their hearts with joy. I love when we can reimagine a piece of furniture that has been in a family for years.â
The harmonious result clearly reflects the shared vision between Korn and her client.
âShe has spectacular taste and had a vision, but she also understood that she was limited with overall industry knowledge,â Korn says.
âWe worked collaboratively, yet she ultimately trusted our guidance, and it all turned out better than we could have imagined. We are incredibly happy with the house because our client feels so good there. Her home is now filled with furniture and finishes that provide her comfort and delight.â

FIVE ACES SMOKESTAQ LIGHTNING
Lacledeâs Landing has a new family-owned and operated barbecue joint from a local pitmaster who has cooked up St. Louis-style smoked meats for the past decade. Five Aces Smokestaq Lightning debuted in January, featuring sandwiches, burgers, barbecue dinners and Southern sides.
The concept comes from pitmaster Antonio Ellis and his wife, Latoshia Ellis. The duo owned and operated the original version of their brand, Five Aces Bar-B-Que & Southern Cooking, in the Shaw neighborhood for four years. In 2020, they closed the restaurant due to the pandemic and used the space as a commissary for Five Acesâ food truck until the lease on the space ended. An opportunity came about to open a new brick-andmortar restaurant downtown when Antonio spotted a for-lease sign while operating the food truck at an event for Abstrakt Marketing Group across the street.
Five Aces Smokestaq Lightning now serves as the new home for the coupleâs comfort food and is open for carryout lunch service. After focusing primarily on perfecting a menu for their food truck over the past few years, the Ellis family has landed on the ideal fast-casual smokehouse menu.
Meats are smoked with hickory, white or red oak in custom-built smokers and a large rotisserie. Antonio cooks with neither salt nor seasoned salt and instead uses a signature 15-ingredient dry rub. âItâs a little spicy and itâs a little sweet, but neither is overpowering, and my homemade barbecue sauce, which is added at the end, is the same way,â he says.
His smoked brisket Philly is one of the restaurantâs best-selling items, served up Philly-style with sautĂŠed bell peppers, onions and mozzarellaprovolone mix. Other popular picks include baby back ribs and rib tips. A meatloaf sloppy joe â an accidental success created by Latoshia out of a failed and repurposed meatloaf one fateful day â gets its unique flavor from house dry rub and barbecue sauce.
In the near future, the Ellises look forward to offering full-service dinner hours and live music. Pending a liquor license, they will serve beverage options including frozen bourbon slushies and frozen margaritas. âThis used to be Show-Meâs years ago when I was in the Air Force, and Iâd come down here for Mardi Gras to party and hang out,â Antonio says. âWeâre hoping to have late-night hours to bring life back to the area and give tourists another staple to visit.â
Five Aces Smokestaq Lightning is currently open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Evening and weekend hours will tentatively begin on June 1. Follow it on Instagram for more information and updates.

STAGES BEGINS 2024 Season
By Mark Bretz >
Now entering its 38th season, STAGES St. Louis made a niche for itself in its first 36 years by focusing exclusively on musicals during the summer. It was a daring idea by founders Michael Hamilton and Jack Lane, the companyâs founding artistic director and executive producer, respectively.
After all, The Muny has been performing musicals at its amphitheater in Forest Park every summer since 1918. Up to 11,000 people attend the âtheater under the starsâ on a given night. With hard work and perseverance, though, Hamilton, Lane and their company not only survived but eventually thrived, offering three musicals each summer.
A few years back, STAGES moved to its dream home at the new-and-improved Kirkwood Performing Arts Center. In 2023, STAGES made another calculated bet by veering away from its
exclusive offering of musicals to include a nonmusical comedy titled âClue,â which cleaned up at the 2024 St. Louis Theater Circle Awards this past March.
âClueâ was both a critical success and a box-office smash. Fresh from the exhilaration of that achievement, executive producer Andrew Kuhlman and artistic director Gayle Seay âwho succeeded Lane and Hamilton when the founders retired in 2022 â decided to open the troupeâs 2024 season with another non-musical, âSteel Magnolias.â
Playwright Robert Harlingâs 1987 work, which blends comedy with drama, focuses on a group of women in a Louisiana town who congregate at Truvyâs hair salon over three years, sharing local gossip, laughs and tears over personal misfortunes. STAGESâ rendition opened May 31 and will run through June 30.
From July 26 through Aug. 25 STAGES will
present âNewsies,â the first Disney production to be featured in STAGESâ mainstage season. The main season will conclude with the epic musical, âRagtime,â which will run Sept. 20 through Oct. 20.
Thatâs not all, though. STAGES will collaborate with The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis in December when the two companies present the local premiere of âMillion Dollar Quartet Christmasâ at the Loretto-Hilton Center, home of The Rep, on the Webster University campus.
Tickets for all STAGES mainstage productions are available by calling 314-821-2407, online at stagesstlouis.org or by visiting the box office at the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center. Let the shows begin!

OLD neWSBOYS
âLet the Games Beginâ Kickoff Campaign
In early May, Old Newsboys held its 2024 campaign kickoff âLet the Games Beginâ at Westport Social. Guests enjoyed cocktails, a buffet dinner and games including shuffleboard and bocce as they learned about the organizationâs mission of helping at-risk youth in the St. Louis metro area.
Missy Hill and Scott Niekamp spoke before Justin Heutel introduced Brian, Steve and Bob OâLoughlin as tri-chairmen for the upcoming campaign. Muriel Smith, from the St. Louis Area Diaper Bank, and Debra Turner, from the Lou and Jackie Brock Foundation, also spoke to guests about the impact Old Newsboys has on St. Louis. Future Old Newsboys events include the âPony Up for Kidsâ polo match on Sept. 28 and Old Newsboys Day on Nov. 21.
Visit laduenews.com to see more photos from this event >
Old Newsboys is a special St. Louis tradition dating back to 1957 when Stan Musial first chaired the campaign to aid local childrenâs organizations. Itâs an honor to lead this yearâs campaign and to follow in the footsteps of notable St. Louisans. Ted Wetterau, Lou Brock, Gussie Busch, Marilyn Fox, Jack Buck and [others] have carried the torch for at-risk kids in our community for 67 years. Itâs our hope to make this yearâs campaign the most successful ever.
