AGAINST THE ODDS
COME ABOARD!
By Connie Mitchell
When Kevin East was a kid, his mother took him to the St. Louis riverfront to watch the boats pass by. At 8 years old, she took him for his first ride on one of those boats – the historic Admiral. “I thought it was the coolest thing ever,” he recalls. It was this early experience that instilled a love of the river and a curiosity about the mechanics of boating.
Now, decades later, East is celebrating his 31st year as a riverboat captain, one of three who pilot the Riverboats at the Gateway Arch. East worked his way up from an 18-year-old deckhand to the pilot house and says the old adage is true: “Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.”
East is not only one of the longest-serving
riverboat captains on the water, he’s also the first African American in Missouri to earn a license to navigate a vessel. In 1992, he received his license after completing a year operating a vessel under supervision and passing a U.S. Coast Guard exam. Riverboat captains renew their licenses every five years, and East uses those opportunities to add certifications, such as licensure to navigate vessels on the Great Lakes.
“No day is the same on the river,” East says. “After three decades, I still love being on the boat and navigating the river just as much as I did when I started out.” Riverboats at the Gateway Arch are operated by the Gateway Arch National Park and offer a selection of cruises, from sightseeing to dinner on the water.
East’s accomplishments are memorialized at the Missouri Historical Society where his first uniform is part of the collection. “I feel like I’m
part of an elite group whose stories are being preserved to inspire future generations,” he says. “When I took my licensure exam, I had no idea passing it would make me the first African American licensed to navigate a vessel in the state of Missouri. It was a complete surprise to me, but it gave my accomplishment even more meaning, and I’ve appreciated the recognition I’ve received over the years for it.”
East has no plans to retire any time soon, and even in the off-season helps to maintain the boats. “The river is different every day, every boat is different and every cruise is different depending on the visitors who come aboard,” he says. “That’s what keeps it interesting.”

GREEN SPACE All the BUZZ
By Charlotte Renner
If you have access to a smartphone and a garden, whether it’s in your backyard or your local park, you can be a citizen scientist. In 2019, Dr. Nicole Miller-Struttman started Shutterbee, a St. Louis-based research study focused on learning more about our area’s bee population and the importance of pollinators in the region. Here, Miller-Struttman tells us how the study works, the importance of citizen science and why she launched it in the first place.
How does Shutterbee work?
What are you studying through it?
“We have a research team that collaborates with citizen scientists. Citizen scientists pick a garden of their choosing; it can be in their yard, in a park nearby or in a community garden. Then they photograph the bees in those gardens every two weeks. That allows us to try to understand bee diversity and interactions with plants across the urbanization gradients: So, are bees in the city doing anything different than bees in the suburbs? Our future goal is to actually look at how much these things change from year to year. We’ve been doing this for a few years now and we have a lot of really good information about what’s here, but we don’t necessarily know how often they come and go or how often their populations fluctuate. That’s one of our next steps.”
What is the significance of getting the community involved through citizen science?
“One of the things we have found is that people get so connected to the organisms that they’re observing and their gardens they’re working in a way they hadn’t before. Bees are everywhere, and we don’t see them. Some of them are really small, so they start to look a little bit more closely. The other part of it
How to Get Involved
Miller-Struttman stresses that anyone can participate in Shutterbee; you can go to any garden, anywhere, for the study. “It doesn’t matter to us because it doesn’t matter to the bees,” she says. “If there’s a garden out there, they’re using it.” after participants upload photos of the bees to iNaturalist, a website used to record natural observations, Miller-Struttman and her team identify the bees in the photos and analyze the data. For more information, visit shutterbee.net.
is that they’re contributing to our deeper understanding of how we can conserve bees. By being part of this process, they’re investigating
and helping us investigate how we can help these pollinators.”
Why did you start Shutterbee?
“I wanted to have some answers to these big questions about how bees and their interactions with plants are changing throughout the region. But I also love working with non-experts. I think it brings a lot of joy to the work because they’re excited about it. This is an issue that people can have a positive impact on. There are so many environmental things that seem out of reach, or that seem too big. Climate change seems like such a huge issue that we can’t right the ship on individually, whereas insects are small and they’re important and you can see changes pretty quickly, even within your own garden.”
