What about photographing winter scenes challenges you most? DIANE ANDERSON I do not really have any special challenges with regard to photographing winter scenes because most all of my assignments are indoors, photographing the “beautiful people” of the Lou, all dressed up in their best attire.
SARAH CONARD The weather is definitely the most challenging. I run from assignment to assignment all day so I’m constantly braving the elements. The upside of winter photography, though, is the beautiful light.

he statistics about obesity in the United States continue to rise and shock every year, with more than a third of our country’s residents considered obese. Working on a daily basis to combat those numbers is Charles D’Angelo, a St. Louis-based weight-loss and personal development coach who’s worked with everyone from CEO’s, national politicians, and doctors, to stay at home parents and teens. Two lives recently transformed through his unique coaching program are those of Kathy Blattel and Troy Schob. Schob routinely saw D’Angelo on TV and was interested in his philosophies, so he bought D’Angelo’s book, “Think and Grow Thin.” Schob read it but couldn’t fully commit because his father became ill. Before his father passed away, he told Schob, “Don’t end up like me.” “I knew I was going to be the next guy lying in that bed,” Schob says. “I decided at that point to do something. I called Charles’ office and enrolled in his coaching program.” They started off with D’Angelo helping Schob get clear on what he wanted out of life. Schob’s mission was to change his destiny. He didn’t want to end up like his father. D’Angelo helped Schob discover exactly what he’d have to do to reach his goals. “The weight just started melting off,” Schob says. “I kept working out and eating right, and it became fun. I’m the healthiest I’ve been since I was 18.” He talks about being able to get on the treadmill and go for 50 minutes without batting an eye because his endurance is so much better. “I’ve never achieved this kind of success before,” he says. “You see people losing a lot of weight, but Charles made it a reality for me. Get in the right mindset, and you can do anything.” Kathy Blattel struggled with her weight the majority of her life. Throughout the past several years, she tried a wide range of programs and would lose 20 or so pounds and gain it back. It was frustrating. Then, her son told her one of his friends was reaching his goals working with Charles D’Angelo. Blattel looked him up and reached out. “There were some things that really attracted me to his message and his program,” she says. No. 1, she says, she saw there were a lot of older women who had been able to lose a lot of weight through his program and keep the weight off. Secondly, he has a strong faith in God, which appealed to Blattel because of her strong spiritual background. Third, D’Angelo has been there.

He used to be 360 pounds and “gets it,” according to Blattel. Blattel started working with D’Angelo. Her daughter, after seeing how much weight Blattel was losing, signed up, too. “Not only have I lost more than 100 pounds, but my entire family is down more than 300 pounds collectively in the last seven months simply following my lead.” Blattel says. “It’s very exciting.” Life for Blattel and her family is “one thousand percent different.” She says everything is easier, from sleeping to running errands. “I have achieved all my goals I set with Charles in the beginning,” she says. “Charles is tough and direct. I don’t think I would’ve lost the weight without him specifically as my coach.” Every day when she got onto the scale and would see her weight was down, she was motivated further. “When people ask ‘Wasn’t it hard to lose 100 pounds?’ I tell them it was much harder to be overweight than to lose 100 pounds,” Blattel says. “It’s much easier to lose it than to be overweight. That’s my new mantra.” Helping people recognize the positive possibilities for their lives is what gets D’Angelo out of bed every morning. “To think small changes have such life-saving, massive impacts drives me,” D’Angelo says. “Change doesn’t happen overnight, but the process of changing does.” He recommends people start their weight loss journey by writing down exactly what they want out of their lives, “without hesitation or reservation – no filter.” “After finishing a full page outlining all of your goals, look at them and ask yourself what type of person you will have to become to have the things or experiences you want,” he says. “With that new clarity, get to work immediately on finding the right people or information to help you begin the growth process of becoming that person.” Charles D’Angelo, 314-495-3228, charlesdangelo.com

t was a festive evening at Dominic’s Restaurant on The Hill as Winter Opera Saint Louis celebrated its annual Holidays on The Hill event. The four-course meal was accompanied by singalong carols and holiday classics performed by Winter Opera members. Already several performances into the 2015-2016 season, January will feature “Così fan Tutte” by Mozart, and March will feature “Il Trovatore” by Verdi. This is the ninth season that nonprofit Winter Opera has been providing the community with world-class operatic performances during the winter months, featuring nationally and internationally known artists.

uests were invited to the second annual Epilepsy Foundation of Missouri and Kansas fundraiser, An Evening of Opera, which took place at the Sheldon Concert Hall. Kathryn Favazza, soprano, Sara Murphy, mezzo-soprano, and John Tiranno, tenor, were accompanied by pianist Sandra Geary and performed opera classics from some of the most beloved operas including “Norma” and “Rigoletto,” as well as the famous “Flower Duet” from the French opera “Lakme.” The foundation leads the fight to stop seizures and find a cure to overcome the challenges created by epilepsy through efforts including education, advocacy and research.

he Maryville University St. Louis Speakers Series recently hosted a private dinner for Diana Nyad at the Lewis and Clark Room on the 16th floor of the Saint Louis Club. Nyad came to national attention in the 1970s for swimming around Manhattan and then from the Bahamas to Florida. In 2013 at the age of 64, she became the first person to swim from Cuba to Key West, Florida, without the aid of a shark cage. Nyad is also a journalist who has been regularly featured on National Public Radio and ABC’s “Wide World of Sports.” The Speakers Series is open to the public by subscribing to it. The lectures take place from 8 to 9:30 p.m. on seven Tuesday evenings from October through April.
In what was possibly one of the all-time top talks of the St. Louis Speakers Series, Diana Nyad mesmerized the audience, not just with the details of her remarkable achievements in long-distance swimming, but with her enthusiasm, her energy, her great interpersonal charm, and with her openness about her journey and the obstacles she faced.

SUNNY UPGRADE

T
he space was a surprise. The client, a single dad with two teenagers, called Patrice Munden of Patrice Munden Interior Design to redo a sunroom. He was a previous client of Munden’s; she had done two rooms for him six months prior. The mission was to convert an unused sunroom into a space for his teenage daughter to entertain her friends. “He wanted a space for her with no TV,” Munden says. “The space would be to listen to music, read and study.” Munden peeked into the young woman’s room to get a sense of her style so they could work with the space. “Her style is on the modern side,” Munden says. “We had put a strong blue on the walls of (the client’s) previous two rooms, so we went with that.” She says the bright blue helps lighten the room, as the flooring is very dark. The client met Munden at the furniture store, and once they picked out a durable sofa, they were able to work the rest of the space around it. “We picked up a funky table and put in a reading lamp that’s height-adjustable,” Munden says. “Other than the sofa, we wanted to go with light surfacing.” The surprise was a success. “She’s very pleased with it,” Munden says.

antone, the global color authority, announced the newest additions to its Color of the Year lineup: Serenity, a weightless and airy hue resembling a clear blue sky, and Rose Quartz, a gentle mineral-inspired variation of pink. It’s the first time the organization has selected two hues as Color of the Year. Past notables include Marsala (2015), Radiant Orchid (2014), Emerald (2013), tangerine tango (2012) and Honeysuckle (2011). “With the whole greater than its individual parts, joined together Serenity and Rose Quartz demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness, as well as a soothing sense of order and peace,” says Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone Color Institute executive director, in a news release. As a practical matter, many might wonder how best to incorporate the new and somewhat unorthodox palette in their homes. For those who are tentative about investing in the new combo, the best advice is to experiment in ways that can be easily and relatively inexpensively implemented. For example, in the dining room, you might consider painting a feature wall in Serenity and accenting it with new Rose Quartzcolored dinnerware and accessories. In the kitchen, a Rose Quartz toaster or mixer could easily and beautifully co-exist with black, white and stainless steel for a modern look. “Color is all about context – how and where it is used,” Eiseman says. “It’s also about shape, function, materials and texture.” She acknowledges that some of us will find it hard to break with the stereotypical perception and usage of blue as a masculine color and pink as a feminine color. However, it’s also possible that presenting and using these colors together in new ways could help change those stereotypes. “Designers and manufacturers should be on the cutting edge of change,” Eiseman adds. One brand that has already embraced the dual approach to color of the year is KitchenAid, a Pantone partner and a pioneer

In the final analysis, however, soft and gentle Rose Quartz may work quite well on its own. In fact, Eiseman says that many people might be surprised to learn of its many applications. Known by St. Louisans and skin care fanatics alike, Blissoma has a reputation for pure and pretty products. Owner Julie Longyear recently opened Blissoma’s brick-andmortar location on LaSalle Street. With changes afoot, LN decided to chat with this beauty brainiac about the brand, the building and more. Congratulations on your brick-and-mortar location! How have you been selling your products until now, and what do you see for the store in the future? We have multiple sales channels, and I’m very glad for all of them, as they all contribute to our strength. Up until now, our in-person retail sales were limited to special events. We also have a strong base of online sales from our website, wholesale accounts like other Internet retailers and also spas and esthetician clients now, and international distributors in seven countries. Each channel has its own rhythm, and they all help sustain us. We are excited to build our brand in the St. Louis community. Blissoma is in a unique position as a thought leader in green and natural beauty. Due to our brand position in our professional community, we have connections that smaller lines do not have, both to be able to carry more exclusive brands that screen clients and will not sell to just everyone, and also to bring educational resources to the local community. We have a large section of the store built specifically for education and experiential events. There is a farmhouse-style table and chairs always set up and ready to host workshops and classes. We are working on planning events for the spring now and plan to be a true hub for natural wellness and conscious living in St. Louis. We are also hoping to bring in several more very selective natural brands soon for hair care and makeup options. What separates Blissoma products from other brands? I think our ingredients, client-focused products and processes, and authenticity are key differentiators. We source some of the best nutritional ingredients available anywhere in the world. We’re willing to search for them and pay for them. Some of them are quite costly, but we know that is what is delivering results for our clients, so it’s totally worth it. We also use those ingredients to design products that are based on client requests and specific needs. Tell me about your dedication to organic, vegan, pure products. Where does this come from? Blissoma is founded on a true love affair with the plant world. We are also a holistic brand. Holistic means considering all aspects of something, so it feels very natural and appropriate to me to consider

the total effect of our products. That includes people, animals and the earth. We strive to be as positive and healing as possible in all areas. Organic agriculture is the best method for growing clean, nutritious, healthy crops. The nutrition content is higher in organic crops, and the growing process is beneficial for the earth. To grow without artificial fertilizers, the farmer must consider the soil health. Everything must be naturally nutritious and in balance to nourish the plant to optimal growth. This is the same approach we use in dealing with clients’ skin – we don’t force or push, and we don’t use harsh ingredients like strong acids. We nourish skin like an organic farmer builds good soil. You have a chemistry and art background. Tell me a bit about what that means and how you used those skills to launch this line. I have an unusual brain, in that I’m very tuned into
both my more concrete, logical side and then also can step fully into creative flow, so left and right brain are both very active! I can literally feel the difference as I flip back and forth between the different ways of thinking. Most people are much more heavily one way or the other. I’m strong in both, which is good because I’ve needed both to flourish in small business. What is next for Blissoma? This year feels like a big open canvas. We went through so much change and evolution last year getting moved into our new building. I’m still adjusting a bit to some of the new rhythms of the store. We hope to get our paperwork done for sales into Europe soon, as they have stricter legal requirements than the USA, and our products are ideal for that market, as we designed our recipes to pass EU regulations... I am truly excited to help more people locally and abroad find their confidence and beauty through health!

very woman wants a new hair style for the new year. And for 2016, sexy and sophisticated long bangs remain on trend, according to area style experts. Ln asked three local stylists, at Dominic Michael Salon, ginger Bay Salon & Spa and Mitchell James Salon, to share their expertise on fresh ways to style show-stopping fringe – and how you can re-create the looks at home.
DoMiNiC MiCHael SaloN Owner Dominic Bertani showcased Sally’s face-framing fringe by combining a series of ponytails into a classy chignon updo. “There are lots of different effects that can be created from a simple bang – long bangs can be alluring, sexy or mysterious, while short bangs can be youthful, edgy and hip,” Bertani says. For her facial shape and style considerations, a long bang looks really good. So i left her bangs long, as they balance very well with the chignon.” To create Sally’s style, Bertani used a large-barrel iron to curl her hair in sections – spraying each portion with L’Oréal Professionnel infinium 3 working spray (available at Dominic Michael Salon for $25.50) along the way. next, Bertani brushed her hair loose and – working from the bottom up – twisted the sections into ponytails and pinned them to create a sophisticated chignon, perfect for a night on the town. 8833 Ladue Road, Ladue, 314-721-4230, dmsalon.com

GinGer Bay Salon & Spa Hairstylist Ashley Shelton was inspired by the glamorous look of today’s A-list red-carpet stars for Sally’s quick, smooth blowout into a loose curl. “I chose this look because my guests are frequently asking how to achieve an easy, do-it-yourself loose, big curl with effortless-looking style,” Shelton says. To achieve this look, shampoo and condition the hair (with Aveda Color Conserve Shampoo, $21, and Aveda Smooth Infusion Conditioner, $21) and blow-dry the bangs first. Before the blowout, Shelton used Aveda products (Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair, $29; Pure Abundance Style-Prep, $24; and Smooth Infusion Nourishing Styling Creme, $26) to protect against heat-styling, create volume and control, nourish the hair and fight frizz. Once the hair is almost dry, someone wishing to duplicate this look should flip her head upside-down to brush the hair completely dry and smooth using the Aveda Wooden Paddle, $25. Then she should part the hairline where she would like it to lie. Last, she should use the Bio Ionic 1-inch StyleWinder (retail, roughly $120 to $135) and section off the hair in vertical sections, moving from top to bottom. “Always curl away from the face to frame it,” Shelton notes. “Once the hair is curled,” Shelton continues, “it is important not to touch your hair and let it cool to set the curl.” For bigger and looser curls, a woman should take larger sections, she adds. Grateful Kids We saw the musical “Wicked” recently. It’s a fantastic show with beautiful sets and great songs. The show is about many things, one of which is the relationship between Galinda (pronounced “Glinda,” with the “a” silent) and Elphaba. At the beginning of the show, Galinda is wholly self-centered. At the end, she expresses gratitude to Elphaba, singing: “Because I knew you I have been changed for good.” Children, especially toddlers and preschoolers, are naturally self-centered. As parents, grandparents, family and teachers, we want to teach them life skills such as sensitivity to the feelings of others and empathy. As children learn gratitude, they learn to reach outside themselves, to overcome their self-centeredness and to understand and meet the needs of others. So how do we teach gratitude? By the age of 2 or 3, children can express thanks for certain people and things: their parents, their pets, their toys. Encourage them to do so. Older preschoolers, 4- and 5-year-olds, can understand the concept of gratitude for acts such as taking them to the zoo, reading the same book over and over again, and voicing simple expressions of kindness and caring. Children model their parents’ behavior, so be sure your children see you showing thanks. Thank

As children learn gratitude, they learn to reach outside themselves, to overcome their self-centeredness and to understand and meet the needs of others. them for their good deeds and acts of kindness. More specifically, you can make expressions of gratitude part of your daily conversations. It’s OK to express thanks for the same things over and over – repetition reinforces. Have your kids help. Give them reasonable responsibilities, and hold them accountable to complete their assigned tasks. Don’t ask them to do things which they physically or developmentally cannot do, and don’t step in to help with the things they can accomplish. The more kids do for themselves, the more likely they are to appreciate the efforts of others. E ncourage generosity. Your children learn to appreciate the things they have when you give toys to those who have less and when you make your kids part
of the giving process. Insist that your child write thank-you notes. The act of saying thanks reinforces the concept of gratitude. Remember it’s OK to say “no.” No one should get everything he or she asks for. Being denied makes receiving that much better. Finally, be patient. No habits, good or bad, develop overnight. Everything takes time. Your children will eventually learn that giving to others and making others happy is a gift to themselves. hen our boys were young, the words flowed freely. There was continual conversation, and they hung on our every shared thought. Unfortunately, the kids have moved into adolescence, and our talk-time has changed. It’s not that maturing children aren’t interested in what parents have to say; rather, most teens prefer to engage with their peers. And it is, actually, developmentally appropriate if your child occasionally does not listen. If, however, your son or daughter ignores you on a regular basis, that is a problem. For many children and adults, conversational abilities don’t come naturally; therefore it’s important to model good listening skills. Pay attention to your spouse, don’t be distracted when talking to friends and, most importantly, engage your children. Look each other in the eye, and ask follow-up questions. If you want your kids to listen, be reliable. “I will bring home dessert tonight” or “You can watch that show tomorrow” or “I won’t be long” seem like innocent promises, but can erode trust and the desire to listen if these expectations are unfulfilled. Say what you mean, and do what you say. Last, avoid aggressive comments. A loud “attacking” tone places kids of any age on the defensive and can create an anxious child or one who thinks it’s acceptable to yell. But at the same time, avoid a “soft” tone. While speaking quietly can get a child to listen, being overly passive allows your kids to walk all over you. The way you speak will greatly influence how well your kids listen. Proper communication teaches a child to be reasonable, thoughtful and well connected to the family. You are your child’s best teacher, and it’s never too early or too late to improve your child’s listening habits.

n September 2013, Jim McKelvey, the St. Louis-based co-founder of the mobile-payments company Square, recognized the need for technology talent and created LaunchCode, a nonprofit organization designed to create pathways to apprenticeships and jobs. Within its first two years, more than 1,000 people took their first steps toward lucrative technology careers through LaunchCode’s training and educational programs. In October 2015, the organization opened the LaunchCode Mentor Center in north St. Louis as a collaborative tech-training space. “The U.S. faces a massive tech-talent gap,” says executive director Brendan Lind. “The U.S. Department of Labor predicts 1 million technology jobs will go unfilled by 2020. When developing Square, Jim McKelvey experienced this firsthand. He couldn’t find enough local tech talent to fill jobs at his new company. At the same time, McKelvey saw many people in his hometown struggling in low-wage jobs, unable to find well-paying work with the opportunity for growth.” In a news release announcing the opening, Gov. Jeremiah “Jay” Nixon said the Mentor Center grows LaunchCode’s initial mission of “building a bridge for members of the community to access next-generation tech training and for growing businesses to access a pipeline of trained workers.” The organization anticipates serving roughly 1,000 individuals at the Mentor Center this year alone. In addition to space for educational programs and mentoring, the 16,000-square-foot center houses its administrative offices and staff of almost 30 people. Lind echoes Nixon’s sentiments on the crucial need for the space: “The Mentor Center provides resources that focus on preparing candidates for all types of jobs in the tech workforce – students can get a foundational understanding of code through CS50x St. Louis, our free, world-class partnership with Harvard University and Washington University in St. Louis, or attend the weekly CoderGirl meetup to explore topics in Web design and (the programming language) Java.” Most high-paying technology jobs require a college degree and three to five years of work experience in the field, which closes the doors to many motivated, bright individuals. LaunchCode is partnering with educators and employers, both local and national, to help provide the skills and contacts needed to move more people into the workforce. Kara Wolter was one of those candidates. After working as a grocery clerk, Wolter sought training at LaunchCode and became an apprentice at Monsanto. “Working at Monsanto, I’m constantly challenged to grow and learn and do new things,” she says in the annual report. “LaunchCode is a great bridge for people who are passionate about programming computers but don’t necessarily have the experience companies are looking for.” Lind points to Wolter’s journey as a prime example of the type of situation LaunchCode was created to develop. “LaunchCode was founded to help the untapped talent here in St. Louis find opportunity while also allowing our businesses, cities and individuals to thrive,” he says. “Our mission is to ensure that if one can do the job, he or she can get the job.“ LaunchCode candidates come from all walks of life: veterans, mothers re-entering the workforce, college students unable to find jobs with their four-year degrees, persons with disabilities and many others. It works to fill many different employer needs, including noncoding jobs such as business analysts and
database administrators. LaunchCode also supports candidates in developing their interview skills, professional demeanor and ability to be successful in the workplace, Lind adds. LaunchCode’s 2015 annual report estimates more than 300 jobs, plus additional apprenticeships, have been created since the organization opened its doors. Monsanto is just one of many large companies providing financial or in-kind support to the organization. LaunchCode has more than 200 hiring partners in the St. Louis region, ranging from Fortune 500 companies to local startups that span a wide array of industries. In addition, the state provides support through Youth Opportunities Program, the Missouri Works Program for creating 20 new full-time jobs at the center and the Community Development Block Grant program, according to the governor’s office. “The support of the St. Louis business community has been integral to our success,” Lind says, adding that a new hub office in Miami opened last year, with expansions planned this year for Kansas City and Providence, Rhode Island. “Local companies hire LaunchCoders, provide mentorship to candidates and support our educational opportunities through

generous donations and corporate giving,” Lind says. “St. Louis took a chance on the experiment that was LaunchCode. Today, we’ve been recognized by the White House as a national example of how to solve the tech-talent gap, and we’re bringing our model to cities across the country. “There is so much untapped talent in this region,” Lind continues. “LaunchCode provides an opportunity for people to learn the right skills, get better jobs, and create better lives for themselves and their families. ome restaurants seem to want to confound the public by sporting sleek, ambiguous names that don’t reflect or say much of anything about the experience they provide. They could be slinging sushi or barbecue for all we can glean from the sign over the door. Sometimes, though, restaurants wear their hearts on their sleeves, letting the dining public know just what to expect. Winslow’s Home is just such a place. This popular University City eatery offers solid, comforting fare in a homey, comforting environment where everyone feels welcome. It’s a perfect spot to dine before catching a performance of “Sunset Baby” at The Black Rep, which deals with all manner of issues of home and family. Housed in a historic building on Delmar, well

removed from the hustle and bustle of the Loop, Winslow’s Home combines elements of neighborhood restaurant and artisanal grocery store. Browse the shelves and cases full of sundries and grab-and-go fare, or settle into a table and peruse a menu full of local goodness. Winslow’s Home has its own farm near Augusta, Missouri, supplying many of the ingredients in the dishes coming out of the kitchen. A number of the employees at the restaurant also pull duty at the farm, so it’s entirely possible your server may have harvested those veggies on your plate. The Winslow’s Home menu is small but varied. We hit both ends of the offerings, ordering a half kale salad ($4, full available for $7) and the oxtail poutine ($9). The salad was a generous portion; even at half size, it’s big enough to share. It’s a very
By Matt Sorrell straightforward dish – crisp kale, crunchy croutons, some parmesan and a flavorful anchovy vinaigrette. For an extra six bucks, chicken can be added to the mix. The poutine is a take on the famous Canadian comfort dish. House-made Tater Tots are augmented with cheese curds and covered with a powerful, herbforward oxtail “gravy” that’s more akin to what we usually think of as a sauce than the thick gravy the traditional version usually incorporates. For mains, we ordered a couple of longtime favorites: the shrimp and grits ($18) and the pot pie ($10). The shrimp and grits are super rich. The plump shrimp and creamy grits are seasoned with onion, pepper and bacon and topped with a soft poached egg. The golden, flaky crust that tops the pot pie is a thing of beauty, revealing plenty of tender Buttonwood

Farm chicken and veggies when it’s cracked open. The wine and beer list at Winslow’s Home comprises some solid choices, including the glass of Mas de Boislauzon Côtes du Rhône ($9) we enjoyed. Cocktails are available as well, including one of my personal favorites, the Negroni ($9). There’s a selection of sweets available that look pretty tempting, but we’ve always been fond of the saucer-sized chocolate chip cookies ($2) the bakery turns out (oh yeah, they have a top-notch bakery, too) so we had to indulge in a couple. Feeling homesick? Winslow’s Home may be the cure you seek.

Story: Nina hustles the streets and deals drugs along with her boyfriend, Damon, to pay the rent on her modest studio apartment in Brooklyn. It’s not much of a life, but she holds onto the memories of her beloved late mother, who raised her. One day, she is visited by an older man named Kenyatta Shakur, who identifies himself as her father. This is no sweetness-and-light reunion, but instead a meeting that sets off a maelstrom of anger in Nina. She informs Kenyatta that her father abandoned his family long ago to pursue his political causes as a black revolutionary and that she has no use for him. Kenyatta patiently waits his turn to speak. When he does, he inquires about several letters that his late wife intended for him, letters that he believes are in Nina’s possession. His daughter informs him that if she has the letters, they are worth quite a bit of money because a number of historians and media types have reached out to her to purchase them. Damon sees Kenyatta’s quest as an opportunity to make big money, enough for him and Nina to start their lives over, far from Brooklyn and America. Nina sees those letters as her tenuous connection with her mother, while Kenyatta looks upon them as his salvation. Who will ultimately have these notes from the past? Highlights: Sober, strong and striking, “Sunset Baby” is a powerful study of both the past and the present by playwright Dominique Morisseau. Her one-act drama, which debuted in 2013, is given a compelling and arresting interpretation by The Black Rep under the watchful eye of director Ron Himes. Other Info: “Sunset Baby” is R-rated because of a steady flow of raw language, most often from the mouth of Erin Renee Roberts as Nina. The young woman was named by her parents after legendary songstress Nina Simone, and from time to time, she’ll play a CD with the singer’s greatest hits to capture a mood or a moment. Roberts brings a fiery performance to Nina, hurling invective at her passive father or begrudgingly acknowledging Damon’s need to hear how much she loves him, even if the words don’t ring true. The young actress is at her best when she wistfully looks into the mirror as she changes wigs and personalities before she once again confronts the world. Himes, always fascinating to observe onstage, is superb as he settles into the resignation that fills Kenyatta. He’s so tranquil and soft-spoken that his single, volcanic burst of anger is all the more startling in its execution. He and Roberts play beautifully opposite each other as a missing father attempting awkwardly to reconnect with his grown daughter through her steely mask of defense. Lawd Gabriel completes the cast with a convincing portrayal of the opportunistic Damon, a man who

chafes at his own distant relationship with his child, who is zealously shielded by Damon’s ex-girlfriend. Gabriel and Himes do a fine job etching the guarded meeting between Kenyatta and Damon, when Kenyatta details why the letters have such importance to him. As director, Himes keeps the 90-minute presentation moving briskly enough to maintain a tension between the characters, particularly with the introduction of some menacing revolvers. One element of curiosity with the play is why Morisseau insists on dressing and undressing Nina so often beyond the suggestiveness of Nina’s skimpy attire. It’s a theme repeated too many times, like a joke told once too often. Daryl Harris’ costume design is accentuated by Damon’s sagging pants and Nina’s provocative red boots and snug clothing. The set designed by Jim Burwinkel convincingly reproduces Nina’s cramped quarters, filled with assorted junk courtesy of props master Lauron Thompson and illuminated harshly with Sean Savoie’s lighting design. Mark Wilson adds some evocative projections, including one that explains the work’s title, while Ellie Schwetye’s sound design conveys the hip-hop swagger of the young street hustlers. “Sunset Baby” definitely is not for family viewing, but The Black Rep does Morisseau’s sad little drama justice with a carefully wrought production that shows a glimmer of hope on the horizon.

he year 2013 was the driest on record for Napa Valley, which ultimately drove superb intensity in the wines. Warm winter months led to an early bud break – nearly five weeks ahead of normal – which also led to early harvest, and that produced fully ripened, small clusters with great concentration. Jayson Pahlmeyer planted the winery, Pahlmeyer Estate Vineyards, in 1981 with smuggled Bordeaux vine cuttings. Randy Dunn, one of California’s foremost winemakers, caught wind of the Bordeaux vines and in 1986 wanted to buy the entire crop. Pahlmeyer agreed if Dunn would save some grapes and make the Pahlmeyer Red Bordeaux blend. Since that time, Pahlmeyer wines have been highly sought after by everyone from collectors to restaurants. wo Italian officers, Ferrando and Guglielmo, are excited about their upcoming marriages to sisters Dorabella and Fiordiligi, respectively. Their delight is challenged, however, by Don Alfonso, a mature and cynical philosopher. Alfonso wagers the two boastful young men that their ladies will not remain faithful to them, since that is the way of all women (“così fan tutte”). The officers accept Alfonso’s bet and, to their fiancées, feign their departure to a battlefield. Soon after their supposed departure, they return to the ladies’ home disguised as Albanian adventurers. The dashing gents proceed to woo Dorabella and Fiordiligi. With the help of the women’s deceptive maid, Despina, the wheels are set in motion for all to prove that a woman’s fidelity is only fiction. “Così fan tutte,” which premiered in Vienna in 1790, is an opera buffa (“comic opera”) that features music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. Soprano Gina Galati, founder and director of Winter Opera Saint Louis, will sing the role of Fiordiligi, with mezzo-soprano Sarah Nordin portraying Dorabella. Tenor Daniel Gerdes and baritone Christopher Holmes will play the parts of Ferrando and Guglielmo, respectively. Kevin Wetzel will portray Don Alfonso, with Lily Guerrero performing the role of Despina. Nicolas Giusti, an Italian conductor new to Winter Opera, will conduct the orchestra, and Corrine Hays will provide stage direction. One of Mozart’s most popular operas, “Così fan tutte” made its American debut in 1922. It’s a good fit for Winter Opera’s philosophy of staging a smaller show in the middle of its three-production season. Sung in Italian with English supertitles, “Così

Cbabi Bayoc Proudly characterizing himself on his website as “a husband, (a) father and then a painter,” Cbabi Bayoc (né Clifford Miskell) there explains the acronymic nature of both his given name and his surname. “Cbabi stands for Creative Black Artist Battling Ignorance,” the website states, “and Bayoc…stands for Blessed African Youth of Creativity.” During the past few years, much if not all of Bayoc’s artistry has focused on an ambitious painting project titled “365 Days With Dad.” Also, almost necessarily, certain of Bayoc’s works exhibit sociopolitical overtones. On Twitter in mid-November, for instance, he transmitted the image of a slumbering African-American newborn, cradled in a dark-skinned adult hand. With it, in a loose reference to imprisonment statistics for adult African-American males, Bayoc tweeted, “Would these babies be so loved if we knew they were the 1 of the 3 destined for prison?” For his “365 Days” project, Bayoc has sought to

spotlight positive imagery of African-American fatherhood in a minimum of a painting a day, starting with “Happy Birthday” on Jan. 1, 2012. That painting shows a man kissing one cheek of a sleeping, swaddled infant. “Time for a revolution, y’all,” notes a caption to the image on Bayoc’s website. “Time for fatherhood.” Like most of the works showcased on his website, “Happy Birthday,” in its superimposition of geometric if not quite Cubist forms on human anatomy and an oftenrestrained but powerful palette, recall the art of everyone from Italian giant Amedeo Modigliani – his sculpture, admittedly, more so than his painting – to the early visuals of Caldecott Medalists Leo and Diane Dillon. Given the breadth of the project, the paintings for “365 Days” – which were inspired partly by Bayoc himself, partly by social-media contacts and photographic reference – took more than 365 days to produce, rolling implacably into 2014. Moreover, Bayoc’s website suggests that “365 Days”
never may conclude. Following the 365th painting – “Just the Beginning,” depicting a man’s hands holding a sleeping neonate – appears a 366th painting, titled “Long Time Coming,” for which the woman who commissioned the glowing, puissant image of a father hugging his grown daughter patiently waited a year for its completion. Aside from his “365 Days” project, certain other works display a delightful wit. Take “E Is for Elephant,” for example: Bordering on nonrepresentational art, it enlists a number of distortions of the fifth letter of the alphabet to playfully depict a pachyderm – bulk, trunk, tusk, sleepy-looking eye. “I truly feel like I’m doing divine work that is changing lives,” Bayoc mused in a late-April post to his website. “I’m excited about what God has in store for these hands (God’s Tools) to produce and share with the world.” His RAC fellowship, in all likelihood, will allow Bayoc to continue sharing that divine work.

Dawn Karlovsky “I have always been the kind of person who needed to move.” That declaration, so unassuming in its simplicity, assumes a level of inordinate complexity when one reflects on the woman who made it: Dawn Karlovsky, founder and artistic director of Karlovsky & Company Dance. “As a child, I spent hours every day rolling on and off of furniture, climbing trees and doing cartwheels – basically always exploring my space.” Karlovsky’s worried mother enrolled her in dance classes to channel her shy daughter’s physical vivacity, an experience, then and now alike, Karlovsky found to be empowering. “Movement was my main vehicle for expression and for abstract thinking,” she reflects. “It is through movement, through this nonverbal form of communication, that I make sense of the world, of our society, of our history, of family and of our human behavior.” Subsequent to that youthful experience, while studying dance and performing in Chicago in her early 20s, Karlovsky enjoyed a vocational epiphany. “I immediately fell in love with performing, loved being a part of the dance environment and knew that this was what I had to do in life,” she says. Calling dance “a universal language,” Karlovsky notes that her work engages two things increasingly rare in this app-driven, virtual world: life experience and human interaction. “I am interested in making dances that illuminate the relationships and experiences that reveal our humanity and that, as I experience it, are an honest expression of the self,” she says. Through dance, Karlovsky adds, “stories can be told, ideas can be articulated, feelings can be expressed and communities can continue to be enriched and enlivened. “I dance and create dance to connect with others and to hopefully provide an experience that inspires,
heals, awakens or brings joy to other individuals.” That wish for connectivity explains Karlovsky’s ongoing integration of other art forms and nondance artists into her own work. “Working with other artists is an educational experience!” she exclaims, adding that doing so allows her to better understand the dynamism of personal expression and the differences in artists’ creative processes. “Collaboration requires communication, an exchange of ideas that can encourage creative thinking and problem solving toward the choices we make together to create new work,” she says. “Many of my solo works are performed with original music composition and live accompaniment. In this way, our performance together is very much alive, interactive and reactive, requiring a strong presence and awareness of each other and of the space we inhabit in this performance of live art.” With the funds from her fellowship, for which she expresses gratitude to the RAC “for investing their time and research to understanding the needs of artists and for providing the support for artists to do what they do best – create art,” Karlovsky already has formulated both near-term and long-term plans. In the near term, she intends to attend movement workshops in New York this summer and other choreographic events. “For a longer-term plan, I am interested in researching dance on a larger scale through international study, collaboration and performance,” she says. “Such experiences will nourish my imagination and develop my movement language that relates to a more global realm of dance.” And, of course, cultivate her love and need to move.
