The family found homes for most of the kittens, but no-one came for Pippa’s kitten Clover, or Pippa. The family arranged for them to come to the sanctuary. Pippa
A tale from the
...
Becker and Slate Gaertner sons. Slate was a stray that jumped onto one of our volunteer’s dogs to go for a ride! Sweet as can be, our volunteer, Lisa, just couldn’t leave him outside. He had some scarring on his eyes which resulted from a virus that he must have had as a kitten, but was otherwise healthy. Becker was abandoned at ANIMAL HOSPITAL OF THE ROCKAWAYS sure he would make it. Then Hurricane Sandy hit, and all the animals had to be evacuated from the hospital. Becker and his mom, Sandy, ended up with us. Becker recovered and was put up for adoption. Slate and Becker, as roommates, became fast friends. We had hoped they would go together, but it’s hard to adopt out one adult cat, let alone two! But our prayers were answered, when the Gaertner family came to visit.

Becker and Slate’s tale, as told by the Gaertners: were so excited to meet all of the cats, roaming happily along their ledges and getting fresh air in the Catio. We already had two cats, and weren’t ready

around the adoption room, and Slate curled up next to Hannah and Rosanne, looking for love and pets! Later that summer, we lost our 14 year old kitty, Dora, and came back to donate goodies in her memory, and spent more time — and very healing time at that — sitting in the adoption room, getting to know the boys and their
time! We were so impressed by how all of these cats interacted with each other, and how happy and well cared for they all seemed. After vacation, we returned with a mission to adopt. Our older cat, Minerva, is much more of a cat’s cat than a people cat, and we hoped some company One big happy family!
gentle at the same time, and each older than a year, with experience with so stories of these boys as survivors — one of Superstorm Sandy in Rockaway, as our connection to the peninsula is very strong and the other surviving life on the streets alone. As much as tiny kittens are hard to resist, these older boys adapted so beautifully to life in our home, and have even charmed Minerva...when she feels like putting up with them! Ask Dr. Susan... “What causes allergies to cats, and what can we do about it?” This topic is nothing to sneeze at! There seems to be a lot of confusion as to what actually is the culprit that makes some of us sneeze and our eyes water when we’re near cats. Some say it’s the dander, while others maintain it is the saliva. There are even those who claim that it is in the anal sacs. So, which is it? The answer is more complex than it is easy. First of all, let’s clear up a few things. Dander consists of small condition that you see when these scales are excessive. So, is it the dander that causes this malady?

The cause (or causes) seem to be in possibly 8 different allergens that are produced by the cat, the two that seem to be most involved are FEL d 1 and FEL d 4. These two allergens appear to be found in saliva, pelt, sebaceous glands (located in the skin) and even in anal secretions. ally needs to speak with their doctor or a human allergist. Depending upon the severity of the allergy, some doctors may recommend hyposensitization therapy wiping the cat with damp wipes may also lessen the allergen load.

These incredibly sweet Bombay boys, hand-raised by long time rescuer, Jack Hausman, are looking for their forever home. The two were featured in our Holiday Issue of Ladew Mews along with their siblings, Midget and Widget, who were both adopted.
