A Letter from Community Services It’s fall in Los Alamos... As autumn transforms our mesas and forests with brilliant colors and cool mountain air, we are reminded that some of life's greatest moments are found outside—exploring a new trail with loved ones maybe Deer Trap Mesa, watching children discover nature at PEEC, gathering with neighbors at community events such as Trick or Treat on Main Street, or simply enjoying the beauty that surrounds us at Pajarito Mountain. Fall is an invitation to reconnect—with family, friends, our community, and the extraordinary landscapes that make Los Alamos unique. This Fall Activity Guide is more than a calendar of programs and events—it is an invitation to discover new experiences at our partners like the Los Alamos Arts Center, embrace healthy living through programs at the YMCA, and create memories that will last a lifetime at Los Alamos Halloweekend. ART IN PUBLIC PLACES BOARD

The LACHC consists of 15 members who are selected to represent a broad spectrum of diverse community interests and are appointed by County Council to serve 2-year terms. The LACHC is tasked with developing recommendations to the County concerning identification of needs, services, projects and programs that can affect community health; comprehensive health planning; and coordination of health resources. "Birds and Big Skies of Los Alamos": Our Newest Community Landmark This fall is the perfect time to check out Los Alamos’ newest landmark. The project that many came to know as the Justice Center Wall Art Project now has an official title, "Birds and Big Skies of Los Alamos". This completed community-built mosaic was created with the guidance of artist J Muzacz and his team and constructed by hundreds of local volunteers. Stretching across the south-facing wall of the Los Alamos Justice Center, this vibrant glass mural celebrates the native plants and wildlife that shape life on the plateau. The scene features blooming prickly pear cactus, red yucca, Piñon pine, mountain bluebirds, ravens, deer, bees, apricot blossoms, columbine flowers, a swallowtail butterfly, an acorn woodpecker, and even a majestic brown bear, all set against the dramatic mesas and skies that define the region. In June, more than 200 residents gathered at Mesa Public Library to help assemble approximately 240 one-foot mosaic sections using colormapped templates prepared by the artist. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds took part in one of the most public and hands-on artmaking processes in County history. Many returned for the June 13 ribbon-cutting to see how their individual tiles became part of the completed work. Now fully installed, "Birds and Big Skies of Los Alamos" stands as a powerful symbol of community creativity and shared pride. This fall, take a moment to visit the Justice Center wall along Trinity Drive and experience this stunning new addition to Los Alamos County’s public art collection. Police Station & Fire Station #4 Art Projects The APPB’s public art projects continue to progress thoughtfully. For the Police Station lion sculpture, the Working Group has been refining the project through public engagement, artist coordination, and site planning. After reviewing community feedback and revised design options, the group’s current direction is to continue exploring a calmer African lion concept by artist Daniel Borup, which reflects the symbolic qualities requested by the Police Department while addressing community concerns about the original pose. This approach aligns with the project’s goals and remains under consideration as the next steps move forward. At the same time, planning for public art at Fire Station #4 has advanced through a community survey conducted June 2–21, 2026. More than 160 participants shared input on a proposed wildfire themed concept centered on resilience, adaptation, and community reflection. Their feedback is helping shape refinements to the theme and will guide development of the upcoming Call for Art as the project continues. Senior Center Security Gate The “Los Alamos Heritage Gate” has been installed and APPB is excited to add this vibrant new piece to the County’s public art collection. Created in response to a request from the Los Alamos Retired and Senior Organization, the Art in Public Places Board supported the development of this functional art gate to improve safety and enhance the stairwell area on the north side of the Betty Ehart Senior Center. Following a competitive public call for art and strong community input, this design was selected for the way it celebrates our trees, our local history, and the culture that defines Los Alamos. We are also proud to share that the artist, Brendan Lanicek, received formal permission from Zia Pueblo for the use of the Zia sun symbol. You can see the completed piece by approaching the west side of the Betty Ehart building from the upper parking lot and heading down to the back patio. Saying Goodbye, Moving Forward The Art in Public Places Board is celebrating two meaningful transitions in its public art collection. After many years on the pool deck, the "Aquatic Figures" mural has officially concluded its long run following Council’s June 9, 2026 approval. This decision reflects a natural evolution for the space, acknowledging the mural’s long presence at the Aquatic Center while moving forward with improvements that better support current facility needs. The wall will be restored as part of the center’s resurfacing project, creating a more functional area for staff use. On the same date, the "Split Infinity" kinetic sculpture was also deaccessioned after repeated structural failures and confirmation from the artist’s studio that the piece could no longer be repaired. In a positive outcome, its materials will be recycled into a new artwork, "Blooming Lily 3 Medium", at no cost to the County. This thoughtful replacement preserves the original three piece kinetic grouping outside Mesa Public Library and ensures the commemorative installation honoring former Councilor Nona Bowman remains complete and structurally sound. Together, these changes reflect the County’s ongoing commitment to caring for its public art collection, celebrating long standing artworks, and ensuring the collection continues to enrich community spaces in safe and meaningful ways. The library would like to expand and diversify programs and events by holding them outdoors. There are many types of events that are not suitable for inside the library, such as small concerts, any type of craft involving water or bubbles, dancing, etc. There is no other space available near the library to hold such events. The only available outdoor space for programming is the Ashley Pond Stage, and while this works for some larger programs, it is not ideal for library programming. An additional benefit is the ability to be in nature, which fits different learning styles and objectives. The additional space would also allow for partner programs with the Senior Center and possibly PEEC. The Betty Erhart Senior Center is interested in using the space for senior and additional programming as well. Beginning May 2026, the Spiro Soccer, Senior, and Bun Ryan Fields renovation will be completed. The fields were closed during the 2025 sports season, and the project was delayed due to many variables. During 2026, the Spirio field will be evaluated in the spring for playability, and Bun Ryan Field will be completed. No additional fields will be renovated during 2026. The project will resume the renovation schedule in 2027.

The purpose of this project is to renovate and improve the athletic courts to meet ADA accessibility standards and enhance overall safety, usability, and community value. Courts included in this project are tennis, wall ball, basketball, and sand volleyball. Staff held public meetings in March on the project.

This project is being led by Sites Southwest, focusing on the park and picnic area. The desire is to upgrade the park using the Americans with Disabilities Act of 2010. Areas being evaluated include walking paths, facilities, playgrounds, disc golf, and roads. The goal is to renovate the park and determine whether additions, upgrades, or improvements are needed to enhance the community experience. An initial listening session was held in June 2025, followed by additional sessions in January and March 2026. Consultants for this project and the Bayo Canyon Trailhead are coordinating closely to help both projects align with each other and move forward smoothly, given their proximity to each other. 10

San Ildefonso (Dinosaur) & Grand Canyon Playgrounds Currently in

The purpose of this project is to design, develop construction documents, and provide construction administration services for the renovation of San Ildefonso and Grand Canyon Playgrounds. The overall renovations will include ADA/Safety improvements, new play structures, shade, and supporting amenities, with a focus on unstructured play, accessibility, and community engagement. Community listening sessions for public input on the design of these playgrounds were held in February and March. The design team is working on concept designs and a possible Grand Canyon Playground relocation for future public meetings.

In addition to the Ice Rink chiller, there is concern for the concrete slab that supports the ice during the winter season, as it is also near its expected life cycle. A Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued on June 1, 2024; the team received one respondent. An agreement with R&M Construction was executed in August 2024, and the project kickoff meeting was held on August 15, 2024. Two public surveys have been conducted to gauge the importance of a shade structure and the type of shade structure that would be the most beneficial for the space. On June 10th, staff took the findings and a recommendation for a monosloped cover to County Council, where they approved the team to move forward with the design.

The Los Alamos County Larry Walkup Aquatic Center was built in the late 1980’s, and while other maintenance projects have taken place in recent years, the plaster shell of the Olympic Pool is the original. Plaster pool shells are designed to have a lifespan of 15 – 20 years; the Aquatic Center pool shell is well beyond its life expectancy and is showing its age. Los Alamos County Recreation and Public Works team has a completed contract with Lee-sure Pools that includes, but not limited to the following scope of work: remove old plaster, remove and replace rebar if exposed, re-plaster pool, remove and replace pool tile, address tow ledge, install anchor cups, remove and replace pool lights, remove and replace handrails in main pool and therapy pool, install depth markers and “no diving” tiles, remove and replace starting blocks. The Contract with Lee-sure Pools was presented and approved by County Council in May 2025. Work began in March 2026 and is scheduled to continue through October 2026. To help reduce impacts on the local swimming community, the Community Services Aquatic Division has been operating Pinon Park Pool during the summer of the construction period.

Staff secured a grant from the NM Department of Finance and Administration to assess, review, design, and establish construction documents of the project. This project kicked off in the summer of 2024 and involved listening sessions and additional public input. In the summer of 2024, the engineering team from Wilson’s determined that the grandstand structure was not safe for use, and the County closed the area. Demolition of the grandstand and shade was completed in December 2024. Public engagement meetings have been ongoing with user groups, and Wilson’s is working towards finalizing the arena plan. The County Council approved the contract for the improvements in January. Public Works is working with the contractor. Due to lead times for the grandstand and catwalk for the announcers' booth, these items will not be in place for the 2026 Rodeo and Fair.

The purpose of this project is to design and develop an improved, accessible trailhead at Bayo Canyon. The project includes concept, schematics, design, construction documents, and specifications, along with construction administration. Possible amenities may include parking adjustments, a vault toilet, a kiosk, a bicycle repair station, a shade structure, and a picnic table. ADA-compliant parking spaces are being thoughtfully considered, along with accessibility to all amenities. A grant has been secured to partially support the design phase. Public meetings are ongoing, and consultants for this project and the Picnic Grounds at North Mesa Master Plan are coordinating closely to help both projects align with each other and move forward smoothly, given their proximity to each other.

The project involves the design and construction documents, per the Guaje Pines Master Plan, for the installation of columbarium structures. The work includes site preparation, structural construction, installation of two existing columbaria, and all related infrastructure necessary for a fully operational columbarium facility. This project is at the beginning stages of issuing a task order for professional services, including community engagement sessions, design and construction.

The purpose of this project is to rehabilitate approximately 2,500 linear feet of the Los Alamos Mesa Trail to bring it into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Public Right of Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG). The scope of work includes revitalizing the trail surface and improving accessibility along the segment stretching from East Park to Nambe Place and the Airport. The design team presented the 30% construction documents to the public in February. The design team is incorporating the input and working on a 60% design completion project.

The project involves designing ADA compliant improvements to enhance accessibility to the Demo Garden. The work will include concept development, schematics, design, construction documents, and specifications, along with construction administration. ADA accessibility efforts will focus on creating an accessible route, improving access from the parking lot, enhancing public display areas such as the sensory garden, upgrading signage and bench seating, developing an outdoor program area, and improving access to the work shed, along with other accessibility needs identified by the design professional. The intent is to improve accessibility while minimizing impacts on established garden beds. Community engagement sessions will be scheduled later in 2026 to gather public feedback.

Ongoing Programs Nestled in the heart of downtown, the Los Alamos History Museum presents the stories of Los Alamos from multiple perspectives via indoor and outdoor venues, historic buildings, artifacts, documents, photographs, audio and video recordings of personal stories, and interactive visitor experiences. Begin your visit in the restored Los Alamos Ranch School Guest Cottage, where exhibits take visitors from the Pajarito Plateau’s Ancestral Puebloan people to its homestead history, through the Ranch School era, and into the Manhattan Project. Then take a walk over to the Hans Bethe House, home to the Harold Agnew Cold War Gallery, to experience post-war life in the secret city. Don't forget to take a walk around the Oppenheimer House.

BRADBURY SCIENCE MUSEUM

Approximately 60 interactive exhibits trace the history of the WWII Manhattan Project, highlight LANL’s current and historic research projects related to defense and technology, and focus on laboratory research related to national and international economic, environmental, political, and social concerns. History Learn about the men and women who came to Los Alamos and discovered how to split an atom to create energy to power a secret weapon that ended WWII.

The History of the Secret City is an outdoor guided walking tour through the Historic District covering all six eras of Los Alamos history, from Ancestral Pueblan to modern day while touring historic spaces and buildings. All pathways on the tour are ADA accessible. Tours last 1.5-2 hours. Kids are invited to borrow our Kid Tour Backpack for a more engaging tour experience.

Bradbury Science Museum Exhibits Homesteaders Exhibit The Homesteaders Exhibit at the Bradbury Science Museum explores the resilience and ingenuity of early homesteaders in Northern New Mexico, showcasing their tools, traditions, and impact on the region. On display throughout the summer, this exhibit highlights the intersection of science, survival, and community in shaping the area's history.

FULLER LODGE ART CENTER

Nestled in the heart of downtown Los Alamos, this multifaceted hub for art and artists in the community was formed in 1977. Located in the south wing of the historic Fuller Lodge, the Art Center, which is run by the Los Alamos Arts Council, embraces its history, but also looks forward to the future.

The Los Alamos Farmers' Market began in 1970, making it one of New Mexico's longest-running farmers' markets. The market's foundational principles are that every New Mexico family deserves access to fresh food, and farmers should be able to stay on their land, keep water and seeds in production, and preserve agricultural knowledge. Supporting local growers, ranchers, and food producers preserves cultural identity and traditions, along with creating valuable community gathering places. It also keeps important food dollars circulating in our hometowns where they are needed most.

with WILDLIFE Living with Large Predators... Large predators in Los Alamos County include mountain lions, black bears, bobcats and coyotes. They can at times be dangerous. However, with a better understanding of these animals, we can learn to coexist safely.

Who do I call to report an issue? DOMESTIC ANIMALS: Call the Los Alamos Police Department Animal Control non-emergency number at 505-662-8222. If it is an emergency, call 9-1-1. WILD ANIMALS: Contact the New Mexico Department of Wildlife Main Office with questions or concerns at 505-476-8000. If it is an emergency, call 9-1-1.

Don’t feed the wildlife... Los Alamos Code Ordinance 02-373 prohibits the feeding of wild animals on both public and private property within the County’s boundaries.

Never feed the wildlife. It is unhealthy for animals and may lead them to become aggressive towards humans.

When exploring our open spaces and parks this fall, take a moment to stop, look around, and listen. A lot of wildlife can be observed in this way. It is exciting to see wildlife, but remember, our parks and open spaces are their home and it is our responsibility to allow animals to live their lives undisturbed. Any wild animal may be dangerous if approached. Additionally, wild animals can carry deadly diseases such as hantavirus, plague, and rabies.

Fall is also the last chance for black bears to forage and they will roam about searching for every bit of remaining food, natural and otherwise. This behavior makes it more likely for people and bears to encounter each other out in the woods or in our neighborhoods.

How do I stay safe? •

If you see wildlife, watch quietly from a safe distance. Never approach. Back away slowly if you need to.

•

If the animal approaches you, stand up tall and make loud noises. Clap your hands. Never run.

•

Keep dogs on non-retractable leashes at all times.

•

Be alert while driving. Male deer and elk behavior can be unpredictable during the rut and they may dart straight out in the road.

As the days get shorter, more vehicles will be on the road at dawn and dusk – prime times for wildlife activity.

•

Slow down at dawn, dusk and night. Low-light conditions make wildlife hard to see until it’s too late.

Elk behavior during the fall season is called the rut. Elk breed in the fall and exhibit various behaviors that are more aggressive and visible than at other times of year.

•

Secure trash in bear-resistant containers, dumpsters, enclosures. Easy-to-access trash is the number one thing that attracts bears to homes and communities.

The most common animal you will see on the Pajarito Plateau is deer. However, we have many wild animals that call the plateau home. Be aware of what is going on around you, and learn what to do if you encounter a mountain lion, black bear, coyote, or bobcat.

Passport to the Pajarito Plateau Ongoing

This is a fun program to get families outside, exploring our beautiful trails together. Los Alamos County, Bandelier, the Santa Fe National Forest, and the Valles Caldera have so many great trails, and now, thanks to support from the Delle Foundation, Clif Bar Family Foundation, Kate Svitek Memorial Foundation, and George and Helen Cowan Trust, we’re giving you an easy way to discover them. Here’s how it works: As you hike the trails inside the passport, look for a wooden post or a bench with a small metal plate on it.

Jemez Mountain Trail National Scenic Byway

SANTA FE NATIONAL FOREST

Circling Fenton Lake State Park between Bernalillo, Cuba and Los Alamos, the Jemez Mountain Trail is a beautiful drive full of the courageous history of the Jemez people and surrounded by some of the most stunning scenery in the southwest. The Jemez Mountain Trail starts at the Coronado Monument in Bernalillo and encompasses the Jemez State Monument, Valles Caldera Preserve and finishes at Bandelier National Monument. It is filled with many opportunities for hiking, fishing, camping, cross-country skiing, or visiting natural hot springs. Explore unique sights, like Soda Dam and Jemez Falls, or take a short hike to Spence Hot Springs for a relaxing dip in the pools. Enjoy the unique red rock scenery, winding canyons, and breathtaking views, as you loop through the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) and enjoy fishing at Fenton Lake State Park, or a short side trip to the Gilman Tunnels—blasted through rock during the 1920s. This 132-mile loop accommodates most vehicles and offers a convenient and rewarding way to experience the best of the Jemez Mountains—in just one day! Depart west from Los Alamos via NM501 and turn right onto NM4 toward Jemez Springs, traveling through Bandelier National Monument and the Valles Caldera National Preserve. The road leads up more than 1,000 feet through the forest, cresting at an elevation of 9,000 feet.

Some of the finest mountain scenery in the Southwest is found in the 1.6-million-acre Santa Fe National Forest. Here, you can find the headwaters of Pecos, Jemez, and Gallinas Rivers; mountain streams; lakes; and trout fishing. Travel into the Dome Wilderness via pack trips, saddle, or on 1,000 miles of hiking trails. Consider turkey, elk, deer, and bear hunting, or visit one of many nearby Indian pueblos, Spanish missions, and Indian ruins.

Las Conchas Trail East Fork Trail via Las Conchas Trail off NM4 is a 3.2 mile popular out-and-back trail that is primarily used for hiking and nature trips along the river. Climbing is also available along the trail. Dogs are able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

McCauley Warm Springs & Spence Hot Springs McCauley Warm Springs is a 3.4 mile popular out-and-back trail, accessible year-round. Start at Battleship Rock and hike two miles uphill to the springs, or start at the Jemez Falls trailhead to hike downhill first. Dogs are also able to use this trail. Want to enjoy the springs without the hike? Visit Spence Hot Springs, located a short 1/4 mile hike off NM4, just a few miles north of Soda Dam.

Santa Fe National Forest West Canyon Trailheads Some of our favorite trails connect to the surrounding national forest on the western and northern perimeters of Los Alamos. Discover these trails and find bubbling brooks, unique rock formations, wildlife, and in summer, an abundance of wildflowers! Purchase trail maps and get hiking advice at the Los Alamos Nature Center. For more detailed information about the many places to seek adventure.

Soda Dam Explore this fascinating roadside attraction with pools, caves and rocks to climb on. Splash in the river to cool off, and enjoy the beautiful and unique scenery surrounding you. Dogs are also welcome at Soda Dam, but must be kept on leash.

Jemez Mountains Amenities, Programs & Events - Seasonal

A gem exists in northern New Mexico, where the sun shines 300 days a year and you can often ski without a jacket. Pajarito Mountain has a base elevation of 9,200 feet above sea level, and a top elevation of 10,400 feet. The lodge is located on the eastern slopes of the Jemez Mountains near Los Alamos. Pajarito Mountain has 44 trails, 280 ski-able acres (not including the tree skiing), and 1,200 feet of vertical drop — plenty to keep skiers and boarders busy. It boasts six chairlifts including three doubles, one triple, one quad, and one conveyor. Pajarito’s terrain includes miles of groomed trails, bump runs and glade skiing. With its Rio Grande valley views, well-known tree skiing and bump runs, fabulous terrain park, lack of lift lines and fabulous weather, Pajarito may be New Mexico’s best-kept skiing secret! Ongoing Programs BANDELIER NATIONAL MONUMENT

Imagine your home carved from volcanic tuff and your crops planted in mesa top fields. Corn, beans, and squash were central to your diet, supplemented by native plants and meat from deer, rabbit, squirrel and domesticated turkeys. Your dogs assisted in hunting and provided companionship. Step onto the trails and ladders and into the past as you experience life as an Ancestral Pueblo person. Bandelier National Monument protects more than 33,000 acres of rugged but beautiful canyon and mesa country as well as evidence of a human presence here going back more than 11,000 years. Petroglyph, dwellings carved into the soft rock cliffs, and standing masonry walls pay tribute to the early days of a culture that still survives in the surrounding communities.

MANHATTAN PROJECT NATIONAL HISTORIC PARK

Manhattan Project National Historical Park tells the complex story of one of the most transformative events of the 20th Century. Manhattan Project ushered in the nuclear age with the development of the world’s first atomic bombs. The project started in 1942 and Los Alamos was one of three secret cities of the Manhattan Project, the other two being located in Hanford, Washington and Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The United States dropped atomic bombs "Fat Man" & "Little Boy" on August 6 & 9, 1945 on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the waning days of World War II – forever changing the world. Imagine you’re a scientist living and working in 1943. One day, mysterious U.S. government men come to your home and convince you to move your family to a secret place to work on a secret project in service to your country. You travel to the remote mountains of New Mexico, into a high-security military base. It isn’t until you report for work that you learn about the science question you’ll be working on. You cannot tell anyone about what you’re doing, not even your spouse. In fact, you don’t even fully know all that is happening. Stop at the park’s visitor center for an introduction to the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos and talk with Rangers and volunteers, stamp your National Park Service Passport book, join free walking tours, and pick up a Junior Ranger book.

VALLES CALDERA NATIONAL PRESERVE

About 1.2 million years ago, a spectacular volcanic eruption created the 14-mile-wide circular depression now known as Valles Caldera. The park is known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. The area also preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples and embraces a rich cultural history. Nature abounds here, so be prepared for changing weather conditions. Whether you are enjoying a groomed trail in a developed area or venturing into the backcountry, remember you are traveling in an environment with unpredictable wildlife and changing weather conditions. Be sure to layer up with insulating, waterproof clothing, wear sunglasses, use sunscreen and carry water. With a little bit of preparation, many exciting activities await you.

Family Friendly Hiking Trails

OPEN SPACE & TRAILS Located on the eastern flank of the Jemez Mountains, Los Alamos enjoys a mountain backdrop amid the orange cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau. The town spans three miles of the plateau, interrupted by deeply incised canyons that offer natural escapes within the town’s limits. White Rock lies on the edge of the 1,000-foot deep White Rock Canyon, carved by the Rio Grande. The canyons and mesas in and around the County are linked by 100+ miles of trail network. Hikers and runners, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and other trail users delight in the variety to choose from. The trails offer a quick escape from the busy pace in town, a way to commute to work, an easy stroll or a physical challenge, and a chance to observe wildlife or soak in the views.

Using the Open Space & Trails Los Alamos County Open Space is open to non-motorized use only. Hiking, running, horse travel, and mountain biking are permitted on County trails. Resource Protection: All cultural resources such as Ancestral Puebloan room blocks, pot shards, petroglyph's, and historical artifacts are protected by Federal and State law. Let all cultural resources lie undisturbed. Share the Trail: These are multi-use trails for pedestrians, equestrians, and bicyclists. Bicyclists should yield to all other users. Dogs in Los Alamos County Open Space: All dogs must be on a leash within 100 yards of a trailhead. Dogs must be under voice and sight control at all times. Safety: When exploring trails, always carry water, sunscreen, a hat, extra clothing, a flashlight, and a navigational aid.

CAMPING, DOG & RV PARKS Camp May - 600 Camp May Road Located near the Pajarito Mountain Ski area, and approximately 6 miles west (20-minute drive) of the Los Alamos townsite. Campsites can accommodate RV trailers and tent camping for groups. Electricity and water are not available at the campsites or pavilion. Availability: For 2026 Camp May will be limited to campground use Friday, 12:00pm through Saturday nights, vacating by 12:00pm on Sunday. Due to construction of a potable water line, there will be no camping reservations available. We ask that campers extinguish campfire, pack up belongs and leave the area not later that Sunday at 12:00pm. The entrance/exit to Camp May will be closed and locked on Sunday to accommodate construction during the week. Amenities: 9 Overnight Camping Sites, hiking trails, picnic tables, shade, fire pits, amphitheater, and pit toilets. Payment & Fees: Fee Waved for 2026 | Normally: $10.00/night Camp May will open May 1, and camping reservations will not be available during the 2026 season. Dog Parks Looking for a place to take your dogs where they can interact and socialize with other dogs? Los Alamos County has three dog parks where canine companions can run off-leash and engage in some canine interaction. All parks are fenced in, have water, benches, waste bags, and garbage cans. Dogs must be friendly and current on vaccinations. Overlook Park: 580 Overlook Rd., White Rock. East of the baseball fields - Includes some shade and grass. East Park: 300 East Rd., Los Alamos. Ballroom Dancing Mondays

This program is composed of beginning and experienced dancers, and the main focus is to have fun, while learning and practicing to dance better. There is a variety of teachers from Los Alamos, some who have competed in competitive Ballroom and Latin Dance at the University level and who take care to offer lessons for a range of dance abilities. Waltz, Tango, West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing, Rumba, Foxtrot, Quickstep have been some of the dances they have focused on, with the possibility of more on the horizon. Generally this group spends one or two months focusing on one particular dance. The evening includes a mix of lessons, dancing practice, good music and a generous helping of laughter.

LA Bathtub Gravity Race October 10

Join Recreation's new annual FREE soapbox-style gravity race down Central Avenue and Canyon Road! The race begins with a double elimination showdown and features four age groups. The race will be held in front of the Aquatic Center, on Canyon Road. Age brackets are 3-6, 7-11, 12-15, and 17 and up. Kids under 15 must have a parent present, and parents of children under 6 are encouraged to be as hands on as necessary! RULES: Racing carts must have three wheels minimum, brakes sufficient to hold and stop the car, no propulsion device other than gravity, no sharp edges/points, driver must wear a helmet while racing, and no use of feet/hands or pushing of cart. Benefits of Water Fitness

Safety Note: All deep-water classes use flotation belts for support. Swimming skills are not necessary. Participants should be comfortable in deep water. If you arrive late or leave class early please include time for an individual warm up and cool down. Students work at own level. Deep Water Fun & Fitness: Zero impact, comfortably paced class that uses the water’s resistance to improve your fitness, flexibility, range of motion, strength, and balance. Therapy Fun & Fitness: Low impact, warm-water class held in the therapy pool. Includes working on range of motion, toning, stretching and balance. Participants with orthopedic concerns, arthritis, asthma and other conditions have found this class to be beneficial. The maximum class size is 18 students. WaterWorks!: A low impact, but effective water aerobics class designed to improve flexibility, range of motion, strength, muscle tone and cardiovascular endurance while using the resistance of the water to cushion the feet, knees and back. May use equipment including noodles, belts, bands and boards. Water shoes recommended. Paddle Board Yoga: Take your fitness routine to the mat - a floating mat. SUP Yoga is a combination of paddleboarding and yoga practice. It challenges you to find another level of balance and focus your mind, all while floating atop the water. Think it sounds hard? Take a deep, centering breath; it's easier than you think, and perfect for both yoga and paddleboarding newbies.

Aquatic Center Programs - Ongoing

Aquatic exercise promotes and enhances physical and mental fitness. The water’s unique properties allow the pool to provide an environment for people of all abilities. Buoyancy creates a reduced impact that is easier on joints and water resistance challenges the muscles. The beauty of water is the ability to offer aerobic activity, resistance training and flexibility all at the same time. Water is thicker than air, so muscles get stronger.

Open Boating TBD

Practice time for boaters using canoes, kayaks and rafts. The doors open half an hour earlier for boat cleaning before entry. All watercraft must be rinsed off on the patio prior to pool entry. Tortuga Diver Training offers a wide range of scuba training courses under the auspices of the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, the single largest scuba certification agency worldwide. This introductory certification course is perfect for beginner students interested in scuba training, and typically involves knowledge development, pool training, and open water dives. This course is designed to be flexible to the participants. Participants are required to complete work online prior to the start of each class. Half of the class is completed online at the participant’s discretion, and half of the class is conducted at the facility for practice testing.

The Lifeguard Training Pre-Course consists of the following: •Swim 150 yards continuously and proficiently using both the front crawl or breaststroke •Tread water for 2 minutes using only legs (hands must be placed under armpits) •Swim 50 more yards •Complete a timed event within 1 minutes and 40 seconds: - Start in the water, swim 20 yards (no goggles) - Surface dive 10 feet to retrieve a 10lb weight - Return to surface and return to original spot with both hands on the mannequin and keeping the face above water. •Exit the water without using a ladder or steps

A community talk circle for pregnant women and mothers; a safe place to learn about options in pregnancy and childbirth. Birth Talk is sponsored by Los Alamos Early Childhood Collaboration and is cofacilitated by First Born Program of Los Alamos.

FSN is a private, non-profit organization that has served the families of Los Alamos and Northern New Mexico since 1989 through its Family Resource Center and programs. YOUTH ACTIVITY CENTERS

One Circle

The Activity Centers, located both in Los Alamos and White Rock, provide safe, supervised environments and positive adult role models for youth in grades 3-8.

These are structured support groups for boys (Boys Council) and girls (Girls Circle), ages 10-18. Sessions are guided by an adult facilitator, to promote a supportive environment and provide a safe place to speak about issues. Topics focus on improving decision-making, self-esteem, resilience, substance abuse, violence, bullying, definitions of success, and family & relationship dynamics. Sessions are typically held at the Los Alamos Elementary, Middle, and High Schools.

LOS ALAMOS JJAB

This Los Alamos affiliate program mails FREE books every month to children residing in Los Alamos County, from birth to age 5. It promotes and supports literacy, the love of reading, early age learning, and encourages adult-child engagement.

The Los Alamos JJAB provides youth and their families with programs and services that work to reduce youth risk behaviors, facilitate positive development, and build resiliency. Their focus is on providing prevention, intervention, and diversion programs, by partnering with community organizations to collaborate, leverage, and coordinate resources. This is an approach to justice in which the response is an organized meeting between the victim and the youth offender. This approach aims to provide the offender the opportunity to take responsibility for their actions, to understand the harm they caused, give them an opportunity to redeem themselves, and discourage them from causing further harm. As a victim, this provides an active role in the process.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

Resource Specialist Program The goal of this program is to surround the youth within our Community with the support to empower them to thrive in school and life. We provide connections to services for mental health, basic life needs, academic needs, social skills, special needs, and MORE! The Resource Specialist builds relationships with healthcare providers and others to provide assessments, identify challenges, resources needed, and assist with case coordination.

Restorative Justice

Classes are offered throughout the year to adults who regularly interact with young people, ages 10-18. The course introduces common mental health challenges, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan on how to help young people in a crisis and non-crisis situation.

The Seven Challenges Program Instead of a one-size-fits all approach, the Seven Challenges Program is individualized with careful attention to meeting youth where they are at with their substance use. This program helps young people look at themselves, understand what it takes to give up a drug abusing lifestyle, and prepare for success when they commit to change. Taiji & Sitting Qigong

Atomic City Road Runners is a family oriented running and walking club. During the season, pace races are held on various streets and trails throughout Los Alamos County. Each pace race member predict their own times. Anyone can choose to run or walk for one, two, or three miles.

Taiji is slow, flowing, dance-like exercise for health, balance and vitality. Qigong is an ancient Chinese healthcare system that integrates physical postures, breathing techniques, and focused intention. Practice Taiji as a Spiritual Practice for 12-weeks.
