A Letter from Community Services It’s spring in Los Alamos... The days are getting warmer and longer in Los Alamos and White Rock. This can only mean one thing - that Spring is here! Spring is the season of renewal and regeneration. So, take some time to enjoy the weather, if you need a little motivation to shake off the winter then look inside this activity guide. You will find opportunities to explore Los Alamos in different ways and activities. I am sure we have something for everyone to enjoy or experience for the first time. For those that life may have tossed a personal or family challenge/s, the Social Services Division is available to assist with resources to help navigate and get through the challenge/s. The Community Services Department looks forward to seeing the results of the Integrated Master Plan and the discussions to come on how to implement the plan. Community Services Aquatic Center
Take a dip in this world-class, Olympic-size, high-altitude facility The Aquatic Center offers diverse activities for citizens and visitors of all ages, income levels, fitness levels, and interests, in safe and affordable recreation, instruction, fitness, competitive and therapeutic programs. The Aquatic Center is known internationally as an excellent training facility for teams from around the United States and the world, including Japan, Belgium, New Zealand, Germany, and many more. Locally the Center supports private swim teams and the Los Alamos High School swimming and diving teams. LARRY R. Session holders will be allowed entry into building 10 minutes prior to session. Check-in allowed during session times, however all guests must exit the pool at the end of the scheduled session and exit locker rooms within 15 minutes. Staff will clear all areas. If patrons would like to swim in the next session, please exit the building and repay for re-entry.

Benefits of Water Fitness Aquatic exercise promotes and enhances physical and mental fitness. The water’s unique properties allow the pool to provide an environment for people of all abilities. Buoyancy creates a reduced impact that is easier on joints and water resistance challenges the muscles. The beauty of water is the ability to offer aerobic activity, resistance training and flexibility all at the same time. Water is thicker than air, so muscles get stronger.

Fitness Classes Deep Water Fun & Fitness: Zero impact, comfortably paced class that uses the water’s resistance to improve your fitness, flexibility, range of motion, strength, and balance. Therapy Fun & Fitness: Low impact, warm-water class held in the therapy pool. Includes working on range of motion, toning, stretching and balance. Participants with orthopedic concerns, arthritis, asthma and other conditions have found this class to be beneficial. The maximum class size is 18 students. WaterWorks!: A low impact, but effective water aerobics class designed to improve flexibility, range of motion, strength, muscle tone and cardiovascular endurance while using the resistance of the water to cushion the feet, knees and back. May use equipment including noodles, belts, bands and boards. Water shoes recommended. Aqua Zumba: Splashing, stretching, twisting – even shouting, laughing, hooting, and hollering! Salsa, Merengue, Disco, and more in chest deep water for a great low impact but challenging workout. Integrating the Zumba philosophy with traditional aquatic fitness, Aqua Zumba classes blend it all together into a workout that's cardio-conditioning, and body-toning. Water shoes recommended.

Practice time for boaters using canoes, kayaks and rafts. The doors open half an hour earlier for boat cleaning before entry. All watercraft must be rinsed off on the patio prior to pool entry. Boaters must provide their own boats. All participants must have a wristband from the front desk before entering the pool. Life jackets are recommended for participants. 7:00 - 8:00pm, Aquatic Center $5 per person - Doors close at 7:10pm
Safety Note: All deep-water classes use flotation belts for support. Swimming skills are not necessary. Participants should be comfortable in deep water. If you arrive late or leave class early please include time for an individual warm up and cool down. Students work at own level.

Lifeguard Blended Learning April 3 - 7 This course is designed to be flexible to the participants. Participants are required to complete work online prior to the start of each class. Half of the class is completed online at the participant’s discretion, and half of the class is conducted at the facility for practice testing. 11:00 - 5:00pm, Aquatic Center $240 per person Prerequisite: Lifeguard Training Pre-Course. Meiji University Swim Team February 20 - March 13
Swimmers from the Meiji University swim team will be training at the Aquatic Center. They will be here for high altitude training for 4 weeks. The last time the team visited was in 2018. Welcome back Meiji University Swim Club! Aquatic Center

High school staff talk to seniors about graduation day, hand out Caps and gowns, YMCA and Los Alamos County Recreation staff talk to the grades about Senior Appreciation Night (SAN) and what to expect during the night.
Two events in one day! Bike to work in the morning, and see us at Sullivan Field for free drinks, coffee, and snacks! Then after work join us for a family fun community party at Ashley Pond, complete with kids bike rodeo, a demonstration from Atomic City Transit on their bike rack system, and hot dogs and drinks.

Senior Appreciation Night
Come one, come ALL for the 1st night of the Los Alamos County Summer Concert Series! Free outdoor concert for all, complete with food court, games, and beer garden.
Graduating seniors and a friend are invited to this annual celebration. The night begins with a BBQ at Fuller Lodge on Saturday evening, and ends with pancake breakfast at the Betty Ehart Senior Center.

Challenge Yourself with Cross Country Skiing at our Public Course Nestled at the base of the Jemez Mountains, atop the Pajarito Plateau, the Los Alamos County Golf Course offers a challenging 6,500 yard, par 72, 18-hole layout that gets turned into a cross country ski playground when the snow arrives. The golf course, built in 1947 by the Atomic Energy Commission, is one of the oldest 18-hole golf courses in New Mexico. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who passed away in September 2020, is celebrated for her work as an attorney, federal judge, and Supreme Court justice, notably on behalf of gender equality. Her life will be presented by Dr. Dianne Layden in both a lecture and Chautauqua portrayal that include her judicial opinions, family life, and reverence for opera. Ginsburg’s friendship with fellow justice and opera lover Antonin Scalia became the subject of the opera Scalia/Ginsburg, now performed worldwide. She visited Santa Fe with her family for many years and called the Santa Fe Opera the finest summer opera company in the world. Made possible by the New Mexico Humanities Council.

Family Friendly Hiking Trails Los Alamos County has many trails in its network, which will accommodate most skill and fitness levels. OPEN SPACE & TRAILS Located on the eastern flank of the Jemez Mountains, Los Alamos enjoys a mountain backdrop amid the orange cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau. The town spans three miles of the plateau, interrupted by deeply incised canyons that offer natural escapes within the town’s limits. White Rock lies on the edge of the 1,000-foot deep White Rock Canyon, carved by the Rio Grande. The canyons and mesas in and around the County are linked by 100+ miles of trail network. Hikers and runners, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and other trail users delight in the variety to choose from. The trails offer a quick escape from the busy pace in town, a way to commute to work, an easy stroll or a physical challenge, and a chance to observe wildlife or soak in the views.

Dog Parks Looking for a place to take your dogs where they can interact and socialize with other dogs? Los Alamos County has three dog parks where canine companions can run off-leash and engage in some canine interaction. All parks are fenced in, have water, benches, waste bags and garbage cans. Ashley Pond Park A downtown landmark dating back to ranch-school days, Ashley Pond Park was originally a natural depression. It is named after the founder of the Los Alamos Ranch School, Ashley Pond, and is a cherished place for walks, picnics, concerts, events and more. Amenities include a stage, restrooms, waterfall feature, boardwalks and wetlands.
Barranca Mesa Park Located on Barranca Mesa, this park offers a pavilion, tennis courts, soccer fields, picnic tables, shade trees, restrooms and a play lot.
East Park This park plays host to a picnic pavilion, basketball court and miniature golf course made from recycled playground equipment including a Cinderella carriage, a submarine, and a Conestoga wagon.
North Mesa Picnic Grounds This 5-acre park is located in a ponderosa pine forest, and has three large and one small picnic pavilions, restrooms, picnic tables, and a 9-hole disc golf course. There is plenty of shade in the cool pines and the county trail network is nearby.
Overlook Park Located in White Rock, the park contains many amenities including a wheelchair-accessible scenic overlook of White Rock Canyon, the Rio Grande, Remote Control Car Track, and the mountainous country to the East. With spectacular views and more than adequate space, it is a popular venue for soccer, softball, and baseball as well as special events.
Piñon Park Piñon Park in White Rock has a large picnic pavilion, a splash pad, tennis courts, a play lot, a skateboard park, 9-hole disc golf course, and restrooms.
Rover Park
Disc Golf Courses Open year round. Discs are available to rent at the Aquatic Center front desk during regular business hours. In White Rock, Rover Park has a play lot, a picnic pavilion, shade trees, picnic tables, a large open area, tennis courts, a beach volleyball court, and restrooms.
Urban Park A 9-acre park in the heart of Los Alamos with lighted tennis courts, Urban Park has a picnic pavilion, sand volleyball pit, soccer, baseball field, a paved loop for walking or running, a basketball court, play lot, and restrooms.

Restorative Justice
The Los Alamos JJAB provides youth and their families with programs and services that work to reduce youth risk behaviors, facilitate positive development, and build resiliency. Their focus is on providing prevention, intervention, and diversion programs, by partnering with community organizations to collaborate, leverage, and coordinate resources. All JJAB programs and services are FREE.
This is an approach to justice in which the response is an organized meeting between the victim and the youth offender. This approach aims to provide the offender the opportunity to take responsibility for their actions, to understand the harm they caused, give them an opportunity to redeem themselves, and discourage them from causing further harm. As a victim, this provides an active role in the process.

Youth Mental Health First Aid
Resource Specialist Program
Classes are offered throughout the year to adults who regularly interact with young people, ages 10-18. The course introduces common mental health challenges, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan on how to help young people in a crisis and non-crisis situation.
The goal of this program is to surround the youth within our community with the support to empower them to thrive in school and life. We provide connections to services for mental health, basic life needs, academic needs, social skills, special needs, and MORE! The Resource Specialist builds relationships with healthcare providers and others to provide assessments, identify challenges, resources needed, and assist with case coordination.
One Circle These are structured support groups for boys (Boys Council) and girls (Girls Circle), ages 10-18. Sessions are guided by an adult facilitator, to promote a supportive environment and provide a safe place to speak about issues. Topics focus on improving decision-making, self-esteem, resilience, substance abuse, violence, bullying, definitions of success, and family & relationship dynamics. Sessions are typically held at the Los Alamos Elementary, Middle, and High Schools.
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library This Los Alamos affiliate program mails FREE books every month to children residing in Los Alamos County, from birth to age 5. It promotes and supports literacy, the love of reading, early age learning, and encourages adult-child engagement.

Its too warm for ice, but... Built in 1936, the Los Alamos County Ice Rink is the only refrigerated, NHL regulation, outdoor ice rink in New Mexico. The rink offers public skating, hockey, and skating lessons from mid-November through February. However, this spring, the LA Derby Dames will be holding practices and games, with FREE admission starting in April. The basis for the Farmers Market is that every New Mexico family deserves access to fresh food, and farmers should be able to stay on their land, keep water and seeds in production, and preserve agricultural knowledge. This year will be the 20th Annual Kite Festival celebration. Passport to the Pajarito Plateau Ongoing
This is a fun program to get families outside, exploring our beautiful trails together. Los Alamos County, Bandelier, the Santa Fe National Forest, and the Valles Caldera have so many great trails, and now, thanks to support from the Delle Foundation, Clif Bar Family Foundation, Kate Svitek Memorial Foundation, and George and Helen Cowan Trust, we’re giving you an easy way to discover them. Here’s how it works: 1.
As you hike the trails inside the passport, look for a wooden post or a bench with a small metal plate on it.
2.
When you find the post, make a rubbing with your crayon rock.
3.
Bring the passport back to the nature center after you’ve hiked 2, 5, 8, and 12 trails, and you’ll earn a prize that you can use on your next trail adventure. (On Passport III, come back after you’ve hiked 8 and 12 hikes).
4.
If you complete all 16 hikes in any passport, we’ll have something extra special for you.

Ongoing Programs SANTA FE NATIONAL FOREST Some of the finest mountain scenery in the Southwest is found in the 1.6-million-acre Santa Fe National Forest. Here, you can find the headwaters of Pecos, Jemez, and Gallinas Rivers; mountain streams; lakes; and trout fishing. Travel into the Dome Wilderness via pack trips, saddle, or on 1,000 miles of hiking trails. Consider turkey, elk, deer, and bear hunting, or visit one of many nearby Indian pueblos, Spanish missions, and Indian ruins.
Camping & Recreation The Santa Fe National Forest offers beautiful camping and recreation areas that include high desert and forested landscapes on a range of elevations with primitive and developed campsites. Developed campgrounds offer a selection of amenities for users with RVs and tents. Jemez Mountain Trail National Scenic Byway Circling Fenton Lake State Park between Bernalillo, Cuba and Los Alamos, The Jemez Mountain Trail is a beautiful drive full of the courageous history of the Jemez people and surrounded by some of the most stunning scenery in the southwest. The Jemez Mountain Trail starts at the Coronado Monument in Bernalillo and encompasses the Jemez State Monument, Valles Caldera Preserve and finishes at Bandelier National Monument. It is filled with many opportunities for hiking, fishing, camping, cross-country skiing, or visiting natural hot springs.

PAJARITO MOUNTAIN A gem exists in northern New Mexico, where the sun shines 300 days a year and you can often ski with a jacket. Pajarito Mountain has a base elevation of 9,200 feet above sea level, and a top elevation of 10,400 feet. The lodge is located on the eastern slopes of the Jemez Mountains near Los Alamos. Pajarito Mountain has 40 trails, 300 ski-able acres (not including the tree skiing), and 1,200 feet of vertical drop — plenty to keep skiers and boarders busy. It boasts five chairlifts including three doubles, one triple and a quad. Pajarito’s terrain includes miles of groomed trails, bump runs and glade skiing. With its Rio Grande valley views, well-known tree skiing and bump runs, fabulous terrain park, lack of lift lines and fabulous weather, Pajarito may be New Mexico’s best-kept skiing secret!

MANHATTAN PROJECT NATIONAL HISTORIC PARK
National Parks - General Information
Manhattan Project National Historical Park tells the complex story of one of the most transformative events of the 20th Century. The Manhattan Project ushered in the nuclear age with the development of the world’s first atomic bombs. The project started in 1942 and Los Alamos was one of three secret cities of the Manhattan Project, the other two being located in Hanford, Washington and Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the waning days of World War II – forever changing the world. Stop at the park’s visitor center for an introduction to the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, a National Park Service Passport Stamp, and free walking tour maps.
VALLES CALDERA NATIONAL PRESERVE Volcanic eruptions created the 13-mile-wide circular depression now known as the Valles Caldera. The preserve is known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. The area also preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples and a rich ranching history. Whether you are enjoying a groomed trail in a developed area or venturing into the backcountry, remember you are traveling in an environment with unpredictable wildlife and changing weather conditions. Be sure to layer up with insulating, waterproof clothing, wear sunglasses, use sunscreen and carry water. With a little bit of preparation, many exciting activities await you.
Admission & Entry Permits Entrance Fee Waived Valles Caldera National Preserve is a fee park; however, at this time the entrance fee is being waived. While the entrance fee is being waived, Valles Caldera will not be able to sell or issue passes.
Backcountry Vehicle Permit Up to 35 backcountry vehicle permits will be available each day during the summer season (May - Oct) as conditions allow. No permit is needed to visit the Entrance Station, or to hike and bike.
Self-Guided Hikes Daily
Visitors can check out a self-guided booklet from the entrance station for the 1.5-mile La Jara Trail and the 1-mile Pond Trail. During Regular Park Hours, Check in at the Entrance Station

This Yoga 101 class will introduce students to a wide variety of traditional and non-traditional yoga postures and movements focusing on technique, skill and alignment. Basic breathwork (pranayama) and meditation practices will be explored in each class. Emphasis is placed on student understanding, safety and stability for each movement.
