As we move into the fall season, I am reminded of a quote by Nathaniel Hawthorn “… I cannot endure to waste anything so precious as the autumnal sunshine by staying in the house. So I have spent almost all of the daylight hours in the open air.” The Community Services Department (CSD) has a couple projects coming up this fall that will pique your interest. We are performing an ADA Audit of our outdoor facilities to ensure accessibility for all our residents. Also, we are creating a CSD Integrated Master Plan. This plan will provide a road map for the next sevento-ten years for integration of all of the CSD divisions that will include operational plans, prioritize assets for improvement, look at opportunities to improve the quality of life in our community, and consider funding sources necessary to make those improvements and opportunities happen. We will have several opportunities for you to participate in the process. I hope you spend the season pursuing your passions, whether they are on the trail, in the pool, on the playground, at the rink, on the field, a cultural activity, or a good book. We have so many ways for you to spend your days in the open air. I would also like to remind you that if life has dealt you a challenge that seems overwhelming, our Social Services team has tools and services to assist you with that challenge. Homestead Tour
Come create art from a live model in a relaxed and unstructured atmosphere, or come model for artists. Clothed modeling starts at $12/hour and nude modeling starts at $20/hour.
This driving tour introduces you to seven sites that indicate where 17 of the homestead families established their farms.

Ashley Pond Woodcarvers
Step inside the homestead-era Romero Cabin, visit an Ancestral Pueblo site, hear about the giants of 20th century physics who walked these streets, and learn how Bathtub Row got its name. Tickets include museum admission and are available at the Los Alamos History Museum Shop. Tickets are sold until tours are full with 16 visitors, maximum. Tours last approximately an hour and a half.
This is a woodcarving group/class for carvers at all levels. Power carving, wood burning, air brushing, and painting with acrylics will be taught. All tools are provided. We meet in the back classroom at Village Arts. Park around back and come to the rear entrance.

Passport to the Pajarito Plateau Ongoing
This is a fun program to get families outside, exploring our beautiful trails together. Los Alamos County, Bandelier, and the Valles Caldera have so many great trails, and now, thanks to support from the Delle Foundation, Clif Bar Family Foundation, Kate Svitek Memorial Foundation, and George and Helen Cowan Trust, we’re giving you an easy way to discover them. Here’s how it works: 1. As you hike the trails inside the passport, look for a wooden post or a bench with a small metal plate on it 2. When you find the post, make a rubbing with your crayon rock 3. Bring the passport back to the nature center after you’ve hiked 2, 5, 8, and 12 trails, and you’ll earn a prize that you can use on your next trail adventure. (On Passport III, come back after you’ve hiked 8 and 12 hikes). 4. If you complete all 16 hikes in any passport, we’ll have something extra special for you. Jemez Mountain Trail National Scenic Byway Circling Fenton Lake State Park between Bernalillo, Cuba and Los Alamos, The Jemez Mountain Trail is a beautiful drive full of the courageous history of the Jemez people and surrounded by some of the most stunning scenery in the southwest. The Jemez Mountain trail starts at the Coronado Monument in Bernalillo and encompasses the Jemez State Monument, Valles Caldera Preserve and finishes at Bandelier National Monument. It is filled with many opportunities for hiking, fishing, camping, cross-country skiing, or visiting natural hot springs.

Jemez Mountains Amenities, Programs & Events
Some of the finest mountain scenery in the Southwest is found in the 1.6-million-acre Santa Fe National Forest. Here, you can find the headwaters of Pecos, Jemez, and Gallinas Rivers; mountain streams; lakes; and trout fishing. Travel into the Dome Wildernesses via wilderness pack trips, saddle, or on 1,000 miles of hiking trails. Try whitewater rafting on the Rio Grande through September. Consider turkey, elk, deer, and bear hunting, or visit one of many nearby Indian pueblos, Spanish missions, and Indian ruins.
PAJARITO MOUNTAIN Located on the eastern edge of the Jemez Mountains, Pajarito Mountain is only five miles west of Los Alamos. Its 750 acres of land are privately owned and were developed in the late 1950s. The mountain has spectacular views east over the Rio Grande Valley towards the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and west over the Valle Grande from the peak. In the warmer months, discover 1,200 vertical feet of downhill, cross-country and free-ride trails at Pajarito Mountain Bike Park, a four-time winner of MTB parks Southwest Top Five Riders’ Choice Awards. The 30-trail system features dirt and North Shore-style trails from beginner to expert.

BANDELIER NATIONAL MONUMENT Bandelier National Monument protects more than 33,000 acres of rugged but beautiful canyon and mesa country as well as evidence of a human presence here going back more than 11,000 years. Petroglyphs, dwellings carved into the soft rock cliffs, and standing masonry walls pay tribute to the early days of a culture that still survives in the surrounding communities.
Fall Shuttle Service Through October 16
Visitors have the option to take a shuttle bus on the weekends from the White Rock Visitor Center to access the main entrance to Bandelier National Monument between the hours of 9:00am - 3:00pm. Shuttles run approximately every 30 minutes on the weekends. Visitors are welcome to drive directly to the Bandelier Visitor Center any day of the week. Shuttles will run all days during the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.
Admission & Entry Permits Bandelier Annual Pass - $45 Valid for one year from month of purchase. Admits purchaser and passengers in a single, private, non-commercial vehicle, or the pass holder and his/her immediate family when entry is by other means (foot, bicycle).
7-Day Single Entry Permit - $15 Per person entrance fee for visitors traveling on foot or bicycle, or for individuals traveling together in a 16 passenger or greater vehicle as a non-commercial, organized group.

Ranger Guided Pueblo Loop Trail Loop Trail Walks Daily - Through September
Join a Ranger for an interpretive walk to the Tyuonyi pueblo. Although the topics vary by Ranger, you will lean about the flora and fauna, the culture, and the history of Bandelier National Monument that you might not hear anywhere else. Stop at the park’s visitor center for a free talk and film about the Manhattan Project, a National Park Service Passport stamp, tour maps to Park assets, and information about sites “behind the fence” at LANL.
Bandelier: Cultural Demonstration Programs - Flint knapping and jewelry

The cultural demonstration program brings local craftspeople from the nearby Pueblos to share traditional skills such as making pottery and flint knapping. Demonstrations will be held through Labor Day weekend behind the Bandelier Visitor Center. Craft items will also be for sale. Bandelier: Guided Backcountry Hikes September 4, 11, 18 & 25
VALLES CALDERA NATIONAL PRESERVE Volcanic eruptions created the 13-mile wide circular depression now known as the Valles Caldera. The preserve is known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. The area also preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples and a rich ranching history. Whether you are enjoying a groomed trail in a developed area or venturing into the backcountry, remember you are traveling in an environment with unpredictable wildlife and changing weather conditions. Be sure to layer up with insulating, waterproof clothing, wear sunglasses, use sunscreen and carry water. With a little bit of preparation, many exciting activities await you.
Backcountry Guided Hikes – Hike into Bandelier’s expansive backcountry with a ranger and learn about the park’s diverse resources. All mileage information is round trip. Participants must wear sturdy boots or hiking shoes and be in good physical condition to handle elevation gains in and out of the canyon. Bring a pack including 2-3 liters of water, multiple snacks/bars (in some cases a lunch), a rain jacket, sunscreen, hat, any necessary medications. Admission & Entry Permits Entrance Fee Waived Valles Caldera National Preserve is a fee park; however, at this time the entrance fee is being waived. While the entrance fee is being waived, Valles Caldera will not be able to sell or issue passes.
Backcountry Vehicle Permit Up to 35 backcountry vehicle permits will be available each day during the summer season (May - Oct) as conditions allow. No permit is needed to visit the Entrance Station, or to hike and bike.

OPEN SPACE & TRAILS Located on the eastern flank of the Jemez Mountains,Los Alamos enjoys a mountain backdrop amid the orange cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau. The town spans three miles of the plateau, interrupted by deeply incised canyons that offer natural escapes within the town’s limits. Los Alamos County Open Space is open to non-motorized use only. Hiking, running, horse travel, and mountain biking are permitted on County trails. Resource Protection: All cultural resources such as Ancestral Pueblo room blocks, pot shards, petroglyphs, and historical artifacts are protected by Federal and State law. Let all cultural resources lie undisturbed. Share the Trail: These are multi-use trails for pedestrians, equestrians, and bicyclists. Bicyclists should yield to all other users. Dogs in Los Alamos County Open Space: All dogs must be on a leash within 100 yards of a trailhead. Dogs must be under voice and sight control at all times. Safety: When exploring trails, always carry water, sunscreen, a hat, extra clothing, a flashlight, and a navigational aid.

The canyons and mesas in and around the County are linked by 100+ miles of trail network. Hikers and runners, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and other trail users delight in the variety to choose from. Dog Parks Looking for a place to take your dogs where they can interact and socialize with other dogs? Los Alamos County has three dog parks where canine companions can run off-leash and engage in some canine interaction. All parks are fenced in, have water, benches and provide bags and garbage cans to pick up after your pup. Dogs must be friendly and current on vaccinations. Overlook Park: 580 Overlook Rd., White Rock. East of the baseball fields - Some shade and grass. East Park: 300 East Rd., Los Alamos. North of the playlot toward the canyon rim. North Mesa: Located near the intersection of San Ildefonso and North Mesa Park Rd. Shade, water and dirt surfaces.
Barranca Mesa Park Located on Barranca Mesa, this park offers a pavilion, tennis courts, soccer fields, picnic tables, shade trees, restrooms and a play lot.
East Park This park plays host to a picnic pavilion, basketball court and miniature golf course made from recycled playground equipment including a Cinderella carriage, a submarine, and a Conestoga wagon.
North Mesa Picnic Grounds This 5-acre park is located in a ponderosa pine forest, and has three large and one small picnic pavilions, restrooms, picnic tables, and a 9-hole disc golf course. There is plenty of shade in the cool pines and the county trail network is nearby.
Overlook Park Located in White Rock, the park contains many amenities including a wheelchair-accessible scenic overlook of White Rock Canyon, the Rio Grande, and the mountainous country to the East. With spectacular views and more than adequate space, it is a popular venue for soccer, softball, and baseball as well as special events.
Piñon Park Piñon Park in White Rock has a large picnic pavilion, a splash pad, tennis courts, a play lot, a skateboard park, 9-hole disc golf course, and restrooms.

In White Rock, Rover Park has a play lot, a picnic pavilion, shade trees, picnic tables, a large open area, tennis courts, a beach volleyball court, and restrooms.

Urban Park
Los Alamos: 9-hole disc golf course situated among the trees and vegetation of North Mesa Canyon. White Rock: 9-hole disc golf course at Piñon Park in the natural piñon and juniper landscape.
A 9-acre park in the heart of Los Alamos with lighted tennis courts, Urban Park has a picnic pavilion, sand volleyball pit, soccer, baseball field, a paved loop for walking or running, a basketball court, play lot, and restrooms.

Ashley Pond Park A downtown landmark dating back to ranch-school days, Ashley Pond Park was originally a natural depression. It is named after the founder of the Los Alamos Ranch School, Ashley Pond, and is a cherished place for walks, picnics, concerts, events and more. Amenities include a stage, restrooms, waterfall feature, boardwalks and wetland.

Take a dip in this World-class, Olympic-size, High-Altitude Facility The Aquatic Center offers diverse activities for citizens and visitors of all ages, income levels, fitness levels, and interests, in safe and affordable recreation, instruction, fitness, competitive and therapeutic programs. The Aquatic Center is known internationally as an excellent training facility for teams from around the United States and the world, including Japan, Belgium, New Zealand, Germany, and many more. Therapy Fun & Fitness: Low impact, warm-water class held in the therapy pool. Includes working on range of motion, toning, stretching and balance. Participants with orthopedic concerns, arthritis, asthma and other conditions have found this class to be beneficial. The maximum class size is 18 students. Safety Note: All deep-water classes use flotation belts for support. Swimming skills are not necessary. Participants should be comfortable in deep water. Classes canceled due to inclement weather will be rescheduled at a later date. All lessons must be paid in advance. Minimum requirement of five participants per session or class will be canceled. Please come 15 minutes early to get skates fitted and laced.
