About the artist
Urban landscapes from Havana to Syracuse
An exhibit of 46 photographs of Havana, Cuba and of Syracuse, New York, exhibited on old wooden doors and over a skyline of Havana created on foam. The multicolored lights above the skyline represent the lights of the city of Havana. The blue shimmers below represent the sea that surrounds the city.
"Why doors? Because doors are an architectural component that allow us to enter or leave any space. Doors or “portals" take us from one world to another. In my case a "door" opened allowing me to travel from Cuba to Canada and another door from Canada to the United States. My vision is not only that of an architect and photographer, but that of a Cuban who opted to take the road of adventure like many, risking everything. A portal opened for me between two worlds. This exhibition combines the last images that I captured with my lens when I left my beloved city of Havana, and the first ones I took when I arrived in Syracuse to make this my new home.” Danisley Pérez Bravo ARTIST STATEMENT
Danisley Pérez Bravo is an architect; a native of Havana, Cuba, currently residing in Central New York. Her work focuses on the restoration of historic buildings. RECENT WORK 2012 Awarded for her sculptural piece Sacrifices as part of the annual "On My Own Time" event in Syracuse. Piece was exhibited at the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse. 2011 Guest presenter at the annual preservation conference of The Association for Preservation Technology International, in Vancouver, Canada. 2008 Homage to Modern Movement, exhibit at her alma matter, the prestigious Polytechnic University José Antonio Echeverría (CUJAE) in Havana.
