These stories are dedicated to all those people who placed a piece of themselves inside of us. Those who grew with us and grew for us. Those who cared with us and cared for us. Those who cried with us and cried for us. Either through blood and genes and/or through presence and time, we all come from a seed of love that sprouted into who we are now. To all the little grandmas, of blood and/or upbringing, who planted and took care of the seed, and continue to take care of it, we celebrate your time and your impact. In these stories, we celebrate you.

y grandma is very lovely. She’s sweet in ways that no one can imagine. She keeps her house always neat. She smells super good all the time. She’s pretty because she dresses really nice. When she goes to church, she sings good!

i abuela es muy bella. Es amable en maneras que nadie puede imaginar. Ella mantiene su casa ordenada. Siempre huele súper rico. Es bonita porque se viste muy guapa. ¡Cuando va a la iglesia, canta bien lindo!
Granny is helpful. One time when my dad was cooking dinner, she cut the greens for him. When my mom and dad went on vacation for Valentine’s Day, she watched over us and made chicken and some greens and... I forget what else, but it was great!
Abuelita siempre ayuda. Una vez, cuando mi papá estaba preparando la cena, ella cortó las verduras para él. Cuando mi mamá y mi papá se fueron de vacaciones por el Día de San Valentín, ella nos cuidó y cocinó un pollo con algunas verduras y... no recuerdo qué más, ¡pero era genial!
I enjoy my grandmother’s company. She smiles at me every time she sees me and that makes me feel good. One time, I was at her house and I spilled my food. She got mad and told me that I could no longer eat in her living room. I told her that I didn’t know I had spilled something.
Disfruto mucho de la compañía de mi abuela. Ella me sonríe cada vez me ve y me hace sentir muy bien. Una vez, estando en su casa, dejé caer la comida del plato. Ella se enojó y me dijo que ya no podría comer en su sala. Le dije que no sabía que se había derramado algo.

I didn’t understand why she made me eat somewhere else. I was very confused, but I promised to be more careful. After she calmed down, she grabbed my pinky and shook it, like a pinky swear but better because my Granny did it. Then, she said, “You can’t break word.” That is something I learned from her. Something that I’m thankful for that my grandma did for me and all of my siblings is that she gave birth to my mom! Thanks to her, my great mom is here on earth and in my life. I’m really thankful for her. Since my grandma gave birth to my mom and my mom gave birth to me, I can be here to thank her.
Yo no entendía por qué me estaba haciendo comer en otro lugar de la casa. Estaba muy confundida, pero le prometí ser más cuidadosa. Después que se calmó, ella vino y me agarró el dedito meñique y lo meneó, como haciendo una promesa, pero mejor, porque era mi abuelita quien lo hacía. e both have a weak eye muscle so we both have glasses. We have our eyes in common. Also, she has brown eyes like me. We are both short. My height is 4’3” and she is 4’7”. She is beautiful, has long nails, smells really good, and wears lots of jewelry. Granny Susan makes great pancakes. They’re thick and mouthwatering. Sometimes I sit and watch while she cooks. She lets me go outside to play with the hose and spray my friends. My Granny loves old school rap music—Snoop Dog, Nate Dog, and Dr. Dre—like me and my dad. New school rap… not so much.

mbos tenemos un músculo de ojo débil y ambos usamos lentes. Tenemos nuestros ojos en común. Sus ojos son marrones como los míos. Ambos somos bajitos.
Mi altura es 4’3” y ella es 4’7”. Ella es hermosa, tiene uñas largas, huele muy bien, y se pone mucha joyería. Abuelita Susan hace unos panqueques riquísimos. Son gruesos y nos hacen la boca agua. A veces, me siento a mirarla cuando está cocinando. Ella me deja salir a jugar con la manguera y rociar mis amigos. hen I was little, I lived in Perú with my grandma for two years. She used to bring me to a bakery around the corner. I remember smelling the freshly made bread and desserts. She would buy me a cake, and I would eat it all when we got home.
uando era pequeña, viví con mi abuela en el Perú por dos años. Ella solía llevarme a una panadería a la vuelta de la esquina. Recuerdo el olor del pan y los postres acabados de hornear. Ella me compraba un pastel y yo me lo comía todo cuando volvíamos a casa.
My abuela is from Perú. I love my grandma’s food. Some of my favorite dishes that she makes are her empanadas with beef, her lasagna, and her green pasta, homemade with spinach. She smells like the food that she makes, and it smells so good!
Mi abuela es de Perú. Me encanta su comida. Algunos de mis platos favoritos que ella prepara son sus empanadas de carne, su lasaña y su pasta verde, hecha fresca en casa con espinaca. Ella huele a la comida que cocina y ¡huele tan rico!
My grandma likes to sew. She has made many dresses for me for ballroom dancing. She makes different types of dresses – long, short, puffy and colorful. It takes about a month to make a dress.

She loves to listen to Latin music. When she listens to music and cooks, sometimes she dances. She makes me start dancing with her!

y grandma, Mamá, is from Puerto Rico. She has brown, curly hair and dark brown eyes. She likes to dress up, put on make-up and necklaces. Not always fashionable, to be honest, but always beautiful.
i abuela, Mamá, es de Puerto Rico. Ella tiene pelo castaño y rizado, y tiene ojos marrones. Le gusta ponerse guapa, maquillarse, y usar collares. No siempre está a la moda, pero siempre es hermosa.
I love how she takes care of me. She makes me feel cared for and loved. When I was eight years old, I was sick with a fever and a stuffy nose. I went to the doctor and the doctor said to not go to school. The next day, my mom dropped me off at my Mamá’s house. When I went in, she said to go lay down on the couch. She made me soup and toast. We also had to watch my baby brother. But it was fun, because when he went to sleep, we watched a movie that made us cry. It was really sad at the end!
Me encanta como me cuida. Me hace sentir segura y muy querida. Cuando tenía ocho años, me enfermé con fiebre y nariz tapada. Fui al médico y él dijo que no debería ir a la escuela. Al día siguiente, mi madre me dejó en casa de Mamá. Cuando entré, ella me mandó a recostarme en el sofá. Me preparó una sopa y pan tostado. También, tuvimos que cuidar mi hermanito menor. Pero fue divertido porque cuando él se durmió, nosotros nos pusimos a ver una película que nos hizo llorar. ¡Era una historia muy triste!
The baby woke up and we had to pause the movie, but he only had gas, so he went right back to sleep. By then, it was 3:15pm, and that’s when my mom gets out of work. We all stayed for dinner. The next day, I stayed at my house, but I wish I would have gotten to stay with Mamá.
El bebé se despertó y tuvimos que parar la película, pero sólo tenía gas, y volvió a dormirse enseguida. Para entonces, eran las 3:15 pm, la hora en que mi madre sale del trabajo. Nos quedamos todos a cenar. Al otro día, me quedé en mi casa, pero hubiera deseado estar con Mamá.

She protects me when I do something wrong. Once I ate all of her cookies. She said, “¡Ay Dios mío!” but she wasn’t really mad. Those cookies were really good! My Mamá and I like to sew, cook and bake. My baby brother and I make her very happy.
Ella me protege cuando yo hago alguna travesura. Una vez, me comí todas sus galletas. Dijo, “¡Ay dios mío!” pero realmente no estaba enojada. ¡Esas galletas estaban riquísimas! A mi Mamá y a mí nos gusta coser, cocinar, y hornear. Mi hermanito y yo la hacemos muy feliz.

y grandma is a caring, loving, stylish, and very funny woman.
She has a fashionable way of dressing to match with the seasons. For example, she dresses in the color yellow for the summer and she loves a comfortable sweater in any color for the winter. She also loves to wear traditional Peruvian clothes. I love going shopping and eating out with her. My Abuela Ofelia loves to cook. When we are home, she cooks ají de gallina and different soups, plus empanadas with beef and white cheese. An experienced traveler, my grandma often flies to Perú. One of my favorite memories with my grandma is visiting Cuzco, Perú. Cuzco is a beautiful place. My grandma’s friend has a gorgeous hotel. We stayed with her for a few days. The hotel had a fire pit and lots of flowers in the backyard. At night, there would be a huge bonfire, shooting stars and a bright moon with dark mountains in the background. We love taking pictures of the view together.

i abuela es una mujer cariñosa, amorosa, elegante, y muy chistosa.
Tiene una manera estilizada de vestirse según las estaciones del año. Por ejemplo, se viste de amarillo para el verano y le encanta su suéter cómodo de cualquier color para el invierno. También le encanta ponerse la vestimenta tradicional peruana. Me encanta ir de compras salir a comer con ella. A mi Abuela Ofelia le encanta cocinar. Cuando estamos en casa, cocina ají de gallina y diferentes sopas, más empanadas con carne y queso blanco. Una viajera experimentada, mi abuela vuela con frecuencia al Perú. Uno de mis recuerdos favoritos con mi abuela es la visita a Cuzco, Perú. Cuzco es un lugar hermoso. La amiga de mi abuela tiene un hotel magnífico. Nos quedamos con ella por algunos días. El hotel un lugar para fogatas y muchas flores en el patio. Por la noche, habría una fogata enorme, estrellas fugaces, y una luna brillante con montañas oscuras en el fondo. Nos encanta tomar fotos de la vista juntas.

I
n 2018, I went to Perú for the whole summer. It took seven or more hours to get there, which felt like an eternity. When we got there, we had to take an Uber to my grandparent’s house. I was a little scared because it was dark, and someone told me that sometimes there are robbers, but we made it safely to the house, and I felt relieved once I saw my grandma. The next morning, we went to Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu was amazing. We saw alpacas and many, many mountains. My grandma and I took pictures together. Being there with her, I felt content. On our way back from Machu Picchu, we saw many local people. I also saw cuys. It was horrifying to see them being cooked and sold on a stick. When my grandma told me that most of the food in Perú was fresh, I did not really believe her until I saw the cuys, live chickens and, worst of all, the bugs. Still, we all got hungry, so we went to a restaurant. We ate anticucho, papa la huancaína and salchipapas. It was sooo good!

n 2018, fui al Perú a pasar todo el verano. Tomó más o menos siete horas llegar y se sintió como una eternidad. Cuando llegamos, tuvimos que tomar un Uber a la casa de mis abuelos. Estaba asustada porque estaba oscuro, y alguien me dijo que a veces hay ladrones. Por fin llegamos bien a la casa y me sentí aliviada cuando vi a mi abuela. La mañana próxima, fuimos al Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu fue asombroso. Vimos alpacas y muchas, muchas montañas. Mi abuela y yo tomamos fotos juntas. Estando allí con ella, me sentí contenta. Regresando de Machu Picchu, vimos mucha gente local. También vi los cuys. Fue horroroso verlos cocinándose para vender en un pincho. Cuando mi abuela me dijo que la mayoría de la comida en Perú era fresca, no lo creía hasta que vi los cuys, pollos vivos, y lo peor de todo, los insectos. Pero como quiera nos dio hambre y fuimos a un restaurante. Comimos anticucho, papa la huancaína y salchipapas. ¡Estaba taaan rico!

The next morning, we went to a bakery which had delicious bread and alfajores. My grandma, my cousins, and I love the alfajores. After that, my grandma, my sister and I went to shop for a quinceañera dress for my sister. So many to choose from, each unique and beautiful. I started to get a little impatient, but, since this was my grandma’s first grandchild to be a quinceañera and she was so excited, I held it together. My sister wanted a pretty pink dress and that is what she got. The dress was beautiful. It sparkled and glittered. I was happy to see my grandma so thrilled and proud.
A la mañana siguiente, fuimos a una panadería que tenía panes y alfajores deliciosos. A mi abuela, mis primos y a mí nos encantan los alfajores. Después, mi abuela, mi hermana y yo fuimos a buscar un vestido de quinceañera para mi hermana. Había tantos para escoger, todos únicos y hermosos. Empecé a impacientarme, pero como mi hermana iba ser su primera nieta quinceañera y mi abuela estaba tan emocionada, me lo aguanté. Mi hermana quería un bonito vestido rosa y eso consiguió. El vestido era hermoso. Destelleaba y brillaba. Me sentí feliz al ver a mi abuela tan emocionada y orgullosa.
Our trip came to an end and I had to say goodbye to everyone. I was not worried because I would see them again in the U.S. in a week, but I was sad to leave. The trip was so amazing and glorious. Everything was so fresh! I got to see my grandfather and where my grandma had grown up. I even got to see Machu Picchu. This is one of the many memories I have with my grandma that will last forever.
Nuestro viaje llegó a su fin y tuve que despedirme de todo el mundo. No estaba preocupada porque los iba a volver a ver en los Estados Unidos en una semana, pero el irme me entristecía. El viaje fue tan asombroso y glorioso. ¡Todo era tan fresco! Pude ver a mi abuelo y el lugar donde mi abuela creció. Hasta pude ver Machu Picchu. y grandma likes wearing fancy things all the time. She has straight, brown hair with highlights, brown eyes, and wears glasses. Her nails are painted red most of the time, but purple is her favorite color.

A favorite memory with my grandma is our trip to Lima, Perú, where my grandparents have a house with a front porch. That porch is my favorite part of their house because it looks out on the open space.
Una memoria favorita con mi abuela es nuestro viaje a Lima, Perú, donde mis abuelos tienen una casa con un balcón que da al frente. El balcón es mi parte favorita de su casa porque tiene vista al espacio abierto.
A fun thing was when my grandma would take me to the park on a scooter. We would then go to the bakery to get bread and alfajores. The people were really nice and remembered me from when I was little. My grandma likes to cook while listening to Peruvian music. She likes to dance and is usually the life of the party. My grandma is sweet and she takes good care of us.
Algo divertido era cuando mi abuela me llevaba al parque en un escúter. Luego íbamos a la panadería a comprar pan y alfajores. La gente era muy amable y me recordaban de cuando era más pequeña. A mi abuela le gusta cocinar mientras escucha música peruana. Le gusta bailar y usualmente es el alma de la fiesta. Mi abuela es dulce y nos cuida muy bien.

Glossary / Glosario Ají de gallina Cream-based chicken stew; the dish is considered a type of Peruvian comfort food, comprising chicken cooked with yellow chili peppers, walnuts, spices, garlic, and turmeric. Estofado de pollo a la crema; este plato se considera un tipo de comida casera peruana y contiene pollo cocinado con chiles amarillos, nueces, especias, ajo y cúrcuma. Alfajores Creamy, caramel-filled cookies Galletas rellenas de caramelo cremoso. Anticuchos A popular street food dish in Perú that originated in the Andes during the pre-Columbian era; traditionally made with beef, but can be made with chicken breast or a firm fish. Cuy A mix between a guinea pig and a rabbit; in Perú, cuys are widely eaten and are considered a delicacy. Empanadas A Latin American pastry turnover filled with a variety of savory ingredients and baked or fried; there are different versions throughout the region, but Peruvian empanadas are specifically baked. Machu Picchu The Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu stands 7,710 ft above sea-level in the Andes Mountains of Perú above the Urubamba River Valley, about 50 miles northwest of Cuzco. Named a World Heritage Site in 1983, Machu Picchu was built by the Inca in the 15th century. It was abandoned when the Inca Empire was conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century. The approximately 200 structures making up this outstanding religious, ceremonial, astronomical and agricultural center are set on a steep ridge, crisscrossed by stone terraces. Machu Picchu is known for its sophisticated dry-stone walls that fuse huge blocks without the use of mortar, the massive yet intriguing buildings that play on astronomical alignments and panoramic views. To this day, many of Machu Picchu’s mysteries remain unresolved, including the exact role it may have played in the Incas’ sophisticated understanding of astronomy and the domestication of wild plant species.

Quinceañera – Fiesta de quinces The celebration of a girl’s 15th birthday marking her passage from girlhood to womanhood. The term is also used to refer to the girl celebrating her 15th birthday. Margot Clark Librarian, Archivist & Youth Literacy Programs Coordinator Margot Clark, MLIS worked as an Elementary School Librarian for 16 years, and after that for 7 more years as the Librarian/Archivist at La Casita Cultural Center, developing La Casita’s Bilingual Library book collection and La Casita’s digital Cultural Memory Archive. Margot has also been responsible for coordinating and facilitating La Casita’s Dual-Language Literacy Programs for children. She is a lifelong lover of stories, storytelling and children’s books; strongly believes in the value of each person’s story and love working with young people to help them to become the authors of their own stories.
Margot Clark, MLIS, ha trabajado como bibliotecaria escolar a nivel elemental por 16 años, y luego por casi 7 años como bibliotecaria y encargada del archivo digital en el Centro Cultural La Casita, desarrollando la colección de nuestra biblioteca y el Archivo Digital de Memoria Cultural.
