Emilie Seron: Oli kesäloma / It was the summer holidays 1 It was the summer holidays 4 Time for great projects… 5 as well as great boredom. 6 We would have needed a cave. 9 See that? There’s hair on it.
We made an oath never to tell anybody about our discovery.

Sami Aho: The Bone of Sorrow 2 July was scorching in from the windows of our new apartment, when the banana flies arrived. 3 Slapping them dead was just as useful as the blinds on the windows. 4 Streaming with sweat I searched the moving boxes. 5 I was looking for a small plastic trap, shaped like a flat peach, that I had bought from the nearby hypermarket on the last days of another summer already gone. 6 I remembered using at least brandy, possibly also vinegar in the beverage for the trap. The destructive effect of dish washing liquid was discussed online. 7 I placed the substances in front of me in a military order. 8 I dolloped in a bit of the dish washing liquid, then red wine vinegar. Its crisp smell filled the room. 9 There really wasn’t much brandy. B I added some of it nonetheless. The substance was dark but translucent. Scanting with the liquor made me thoughtful. C I took some blood orange juice from the refrigerator, just to be sure. I dripped in a few sweet, deep red droplets.

1 The droplets were swirling in the liquid slowly like a giant snake waking from hibernation. 3 When I lived in Rauma I knew a man who would keep his lizard in the refrigerator whenever he was out of town or in jail. 4 “It’s doing OK in there.”
“It’s alive but not moving.” 7 I closed the lid of the trap. 8 The flies were circling it in sluggish curves. One of them stopped on the rim. 9 On the next day the toxic sludge was dotted with the black rotting spots of their frail bodies. B But some were still left. C Only the winter kills all banana flies.
Leo Kuikka: Greetings to loved ones
1 I didn’t believe it would be so lonely here. 2 Time passes so slowly and there’s nothing to do.
The summer has been pleasantly warm though. 2 It looks like you’re doing quite well. 3 There are several road works going on in the city. Same thing every summer. 4 The kids have grown and you have moved on too.
That new man is taking the children fishing. They should wear life vests. 2 It would be good to cut the lawn more often, and keep places in shape in general. But yeah, greetings from here and talk to you again soon.

Ohjeita jälleennäkemisen järjestämiseksi
Miten saat yhteyden kuolleeseen lemmikkiin
A. Miten saat yhteyden koiraasi:
1. Kun koirasi on kuollut, heitä lattialle sängynpeite ikään kuin olisit avaamassa sänkyäsi yötä varten etkä viitsisi laskostaa peitettä tuolille. Siisti henkilö voi asettaa peitteen tuolille epävakaasti, niin että se luiskahtaa lattialle kuin vahingossa. Sängynpeitteen pitää olla suunnilleen koirasi kokoinen, kun se on lattialla litteähkössä kasassa. Pienemmän koiran menettäneet voivat käyttää sopivan kokoista vaatetta tai pyyhettä.
2. Kävele huoneessa kiinnittämättä huomiota sängynpeitteeseen. Unohda se kokonaan, älä katso sitä, hoitele vain hommiasi normaaliin tapaan.
3. Jossakin vaiheessa näet silmäkulmastasi koiran makaamassa lattialla kuten aina ennenkin. Älä yritä katsoa suoraan koiraan, jotta näkisit sen tarkemmin, sillä silloin koira katoaa ja jäljelle jää vain sängynpeite.
4. Toista. Koiraa voi tavata ”sivusilmällä” vaikka kuinka monta kertaa ennen kuin se katoaa lopullisesti.
B. Miten saat yhteyden vihreään papukaijaasi:
1. Sijoita iso kasvi kuten peikonlehti lähelle paikkaa, jossa linnun orsi oli ennen. Jos tällä paikalla on jo kasvi, vielä parempi. Kasvin lehtien täytyy olla kuta kuinkin samanvärisiä kuin lintu, joten yhteyden luominen on helpointa siinä tapauksessa, että papukaijasi oli vihreä. Myös linnun värisiä ja kokoisia esineitä voi käyttää
jälleennäkemisen järjestämisessä.
2. Kasvin lehdistä yhden täytyy olla sellaisessa asennossa, että sen muoto on epämääräisen papukaijamainen eli paksumpi ylhäältä ja ohut alhaalta. Korkeus lattiasta sama kuin papukaijan taannoisella orrella. Lehden täytyy erottua muusta kasvista esimerkiksi seinän tai ikkunan muodostamaa taustaa vasten.
3. Astu ulos huoneesta. Unohda koko kasvi.
4. Palaa huoneeseen. Nyt papukaijasi on täsmälleen siellä missä ennenkin, orrellaan.
5. Jos et halua papukaijasi haihtuvan ilmaan, älä katso sitä liian tarkkaan, anna sen vain olla.

6. Tämä temppu toimii vuosiakin papukaijan kuoleman jälkeen, joten jos et halua törmätä lintuun alituisesti, kasvia kannattaa välillä siirtää niin, etteivät ”oikeanlaiset” lehdet osu linnun istuinorren kohdalle.
Miten kohdata edesmennyt vanhempi matkan päästä:
1. Kun vanhempasi on kuollut, mene sellaisen kaupungin keskustaan, jonka kaduilla kulkee suhteellisen paljon ihmisiä. Ennen pitkää näet väkijoukossa edesmenneen vanhempasi hahmon.
2. Älä katso vanhempaasi kasvoihin, koska silloin hän häviää ja jäljelle jää henkilö, joka muistuttaa häntä vain etäisesti. Muista siis, että voit kohdata vanhempasi vain matkan päästä, lähikontakti ei tule kyseeseen!
A. How to reconnect with your dog:
1. After your dog has died, throw a bedspread on the floor, like you might do if you are a lazy person getting ready for bed. If you are a tidy person, you can place the bedspread unstably on a chair, so that it slips on the floor as if you didn’t mean it to happen. The heaped-up bedspread has to be about the size of your dog. For smaller dogs use a garment or towel of the appropriate size.
2. Walk in the room without paying attention to the bedspread. Forget about the bedspread, don’t look at it, just do the things you usually do.
3. At some point you can see your dog out of the corner of your eye, lying on the floor as she used to. Don’t turn your gaze to see the dog
better, or she will disappear and you will be left with the bedspread.
4. Repeat. You can have a great number of this kind of reunions out of the corner of your eye with your dog before she is gone for good.
B. How to reconnect with your green parakeet:
1. Place a big plant like the Swiss cheese plant near the place where the bird’s perch used to be. If you already have one there, even better. The leaves of the plant need to be more or less the same colour as the bird was, so this is easiest to do if your parakeet was green. Inanimate objects of the bird’s colour and size can also be used to arrange the reunion with the bird.
2. Have one of the leaves posi-
tioned so that it has a vaguely parakeet-like shape, thicker from one end and pointed from the other. It should be at the same height from the floor as the perch used to be. The leaf has to stand out from the rest of the plant, so that you can see it against the background formed by a wall or window.
3. Go out of the room. Forget about the plant.
4. Come back into the room. Now your parakeet is exactly where he used to be, on his perch.
5. If you don’t want your parakeet to vanish, don’t look at him too intently, just let him be.
6. This works even years after the parakeet has died, so if you
don’t want to be running into him constantly, you need to occasionally change the position of the plant so that none of the “right” leaves are at the height where the bird used to perch.
Instructions for reuniting with your dead parent at a distance:
1. When your parent has passed away, go to a city centre where you can see a lot of people walking in the street. Sooner or later, you will see the figure of your late parent within the crowd.
2. Do not look at them in the face, because that will make your dead parent vanish, and you will be left with somebody who only vaguely resembles them. So, remember, you can only reunite with your dead parent at a distance – close contact is impossible!

The cave is a crack into the inner world of the mountain.
They say witches went to caves to look for snake oil.

The cave is essentially feminine,
still its history is full of men’s heroic deeds.
All the witches in local stories were men! That was in the 18th and 19th century. Ukko Kinolainen was the most famous. He could even make the springs boil…
Once a dead body was being taken to the church on a boat, when Kinolainen, after a few drinks, started boasting that he can raise the dead. / He was asked to show it, and already the ghosts were appearing from the cemetery at the shore! / As giants they were reaching towards the boat when the witch finally remembered the counter-spell. / …and when Kinolainen died, he disappeared from his coffin and they say he came here to fight the demons. / Booze demons, I’m sure! / Hill-Jaska, alias Iisakki Eronen, was a successful master of winds and good at flying, but in the end he died drunk in the snow.

There was also the Witch Eskelinen of Höljäkkä, who kept vipers in his sleeves. Once he was treating the health of a certain Ryöni by pulling him underground from one spring to another. Poor Ryöni got entangled in roots on the way and drowned. Eskelinen hid his body under a boulder and Ryöni still haunts that place. / These witches of Lake Pielinen sure are antiheroes. / They weren’t actually shamans, the kind who travel through a crack to the other side. But they were serious magicians and wise men, even though they didn’t always get it right. / Wise men, or the mansplainers of their time. / But there must have been female witches too. History simply wasn’t interested in them. / The next intruders that came here were the national romantic artists, Jean Sibelius, Eero Järnefelt…

That famous poem is here! / “One secret, one spirit, one good luck for each, a church this is, a holiness to ever remember” Eero and Fanni 1893 / The only female character connected to this crack is this Fanni. But who is she? / Järnefelt’s wife was called Saimi. I've heard it was falsely restored later. / Oh! My dear Eero and I, we scripted these verses together! The visit to Koli was a delight. Our script faded with the passage of time, but the conservationists only remembered Eero. They had no interest in my name. / Under the soil many secrets remain, hidden roots of the subconscious.

Inside the cave there is another cave. In the deep, secret halls. / Only in dying, life. In darkness, light. In the dark grows the seed, and the golden egg that creates the universe. Darkness is safe and full of future. / You can sense death here. On the other hand the darkness is like a womb. / The underground is like the subconscious, from where everything emerges. / This cave is just the hallway of the actual Devil’s Church. Would you like to meet my friends? / Saimi’s wild nature was freed here on the dark side of the earth. After her death she returned to watch over the cave and to enjoy the company of the witch grannies. / We converse eagerly on every subject, here we discuss the bare and wise truth of matters. Oh, such fascination, they have such knowledge, truly… / It is so delightfully deep and durable here!
Anne Streng: The fifth autumn of a herder 1 The winter frightens me. Where should I take my herd? Where to find a good shelter? / It was autumn, and a herder called Misty-Sam was gloomily gathering his herd from the windy steppe. It was his fifth autumn as a herder. / [animal noises] 2 The wolves attacked my old winter shed, I cannot go there. Neither can I stay on the lowlands where freezing winds would kill my herd, and me… 3 Shoo shoo, go! Get moving, chunks! We don’t want to be caught by the freezing winds! Shoo! / Where does Misty-Sam take us now? Our old winter shed is not that way. / We’re in a hurry anyway… urgh.

Misty-Sam and his herd arrive in a valley sheltered from winds. / Such a cosy place. I shall build our winter shed here. What do you think, my herd of chunks? / [animal noises] 2 The sound of an axe started echoing in the valley, trees falling with a crash. 3 And the winter shed got ready. 4 There it was, a hut big enough for the animals and the herder. Misty-Sam’s steady and rainproof accomplishment was sheltered by a twig fence. 5 [animal noises] / In the daytime Misty-Sam allowed his animals to roam scattered in the valley, but after encounters with strange and hostile creatures they didn’t go very far from the hut.
1 But Misty-Sam went for long hikes in the forests of the valley. He had to get food for the winter. He gathered twigs and cones for his herd to survive. In addition they would eat spruce branches, bark of the young trees… 2 The inhabitants of the valley didn’t like Misty-Sam’s ways of finding food. Many were grieving their friends who met their end in his spear. 3 Screeech! Go away! Get lost, stranger! You don’t belong here. / Why would I leave? This is a good place… And after winter you will get rid of me and my herd… / Urgh?
1 The days go by… / This is becoming impossible. The valley creatures intimidate my herd, break my traps and fences and in the night they crawl to destroy my food storage no matter how vigilant I am. 2 …Until one grey morning Misty-Sam finds a tragic surprise at the storage door. / Oh dear little Rötky, I was looking for you for three days. Someone has murdered you deviously. / [animal noises] / Ha ha / You got what you deserve! I was grieving likewise for my father whom you killed… for food, eugh.
1 At night Misty-Sam couldn’t sleep and he went to the gate of the fence, the valley sighing with the cold air of late autumn. 2 I’ve been doing wrong to the valley creatures, so they take revenge, they don’t like me… They killed little Rötky, as I killed many of them. Funny, only now I realise. Misty-Sam, such a fool I am. / And the night of the valley was packed with darkness, and when it heard the herder’s thoughts it smiled. 3 I haven’t really thought about it before, I have simply looked after my herd. And every spring I have led some of them to death, to the hands of Bill the Slaughterer. 4 Oh my ignorant, pleasant herd, I have been a mean and cruel impaler... I will stop the killing and I will never ever take my friends to be slaughtered again. 5 Did you hear that, valley creatures? The stranger smashed his spear into smithereens. 6 …zzZZ… / And after this important decision Misty-Sam went to bed and fell asleep right away.
1 In the morning with the animals / Be quiet my dear chunks and listen, listen! / …I have decided, decided to stop herding you right now! You are free, you can go wherever you like, right now, I won’t stop you! I will not herd you! The gates are open. Leave, forget me, and I shall forget you. 2 What is he yelling? Is Misty-Sam going to abandon us? Are we going to be like forest animals? / Whine? / Ha! I shall take off to the Southern meadows! / Don’t worry, we’ll be fine without a herder. / hmmm / Good! 3 No more spring nightmares, no mysterious disappearings of friends nor terrible tales about slaughterhouses or nighttime transports to bloody cellars where carcasses hang. 4 Misty-Sam gathered his travel gear in the hut and smiled as he listened to the sounds of his herd. 5 Now they go, and soon I shall go too, and there will be no herder anymore… only a vagabond.
Ona Kvašyte
There’s a river, an island and an ash tree.
She gave birth to a stillborn child. I was invited to the baby girl’s funeral.
A small body in a white coffin. She was a flower bitten by frost.
The other three children they had drew some pictures for their sister. They owned nature-inspired names: River, Island, Ash.
Since
the baby wasn’t born to be on Earth, they named her Lucy.
Saint Lucy, Roman Christian martyr, virgin, who’s celebrated on the darkest days of the year, to bring more light to the world.
There’s River, Island and Ash. And there’s Lucy.
Amanda Vähämäki: The path to the sauna is slippery and slimy. And from the woods, from among the rushing spruces, the darkness and terrible evil and shame are pouring on me like treacle.
I was never afraid of the dark before, but now my frozen hands will not comply and something as warm and inviting as the sauna stove seems impossible to lit. And to you, helpfully watching from a distance, I say it must be the low pressure

Teema: Pimeys ja kreikkalainen sarjakuva
Tuoni Myllylä on turkulainen, yli 15 vuotta sarjakuva-alalla toiminut taiteilija. Hän päätyi hommaan lähinnä rakkaudesta formaattiin sekä tarpeesta kertoa tarinoita, joita hän haluaisi itse lukea. Mustavalkosarjakuva on ollut aina Myllylälle mieluisin tapa tehdä tarinaa, joskin sen verran hän on antanut modernin ajan helpotuksille periksi, että työskentelee nykyään pääosin digitaalisesti musteen ja paperin sijaan. Vaikka sarjakuvaa ja kuvitustöitä hän onkin tullut tehneeksi laidasta laitaan, hänen omaa sydäntään kaikkein lähimpänä ovat erilaiset genresarjakuvat, joita Suomessa tehdään edelleen yllättävän vähän.
Myllylän innoittajat ovat enimmäkseen elokuvan maailmassa, erityisesti kauhugenressä, joka taipuu yllättävän moneksi ja antaa kertojalle hyvin tilaa laajentaa perspektiiviään. Myllylä suhtautuu työhönsä rennon lempeästi ja vastustaa perfektionismia työskentelyn lähtökohtana, sillä hän haluaa itse lukea ennemmin paljon sarjakuvaa suosikkitekijöiltään kuin uutisia heidän loppuunpalamisistaan.

Ilias Kyriazis on Ateenassa asuva, kriitikkojen ylistämä sarjakuvataiteilija. Hän on piirtänyt sarjakuvia useille yrityksille kuten DC, IDW, Image Comics, Penguin Random House, Dark Horse, Rebellion Developments ja Dynamite Entertainment. Hän teki yhdessä Tim Seeleyn kanssa sarjakuvaromaanin Chronophage, Collapser-sarjan yhdessä käsikirjoittajien Mikey Way ja Shaun Simon kanssa sekä Secret Identities -sarjan käsikirjoittajien Jay Faerber ja Brian Joines kanssa.
