EXPEDITIONS EXPLAINED

On expedition cruise and stay holidays, the destination is king. They’re all about doing deep metaphorical dives into one region and soaking up knowledge shared by the experts. Here’s a breakdown of the different ways to travel and what to expect on board and ashore.

SMALL-SHIP EXPEDITIONS

When we say ‘small’, we’re talking fewer than 500 of you on board bijou ships. They can get to those trickier to reach places far from the crowds and take you on far more flexible adventures. What they lack in size, they make up for in personalised service, incredible crew interactions and the amount of time you can spend getting out and about.

You’ll spend a lot of time getting to know the on-board team and gain a deep understanding of the places you go, the things you see and the people you meet along the way. Our small-ship partners include HX Expeditions (pages 6 and 22), Seabourn (pages 10 and 18), Scenic Discovery Yachts (page 16) and Silversea (page 24).

PREMIUM EXPLORATIONS

If you’re after entertainment on tap, facilities galore, plenty of space with dining and drinking spots for days, a larger ship may be the way forward. It’ll be slightly closer to your ‘typical’ ocean cruise experience, but we’ve purposely handpicked cruise lines with more immersive trips that’ll take you away from the

trending travel spots. They also act as an accessible entry into more adventurous holidays while keeping those lively, social and activity-packed days at sea. EXPERT INTUITION

An absolute given on any expedition cruise – small or large, premium or ultra-luxe – is that you’ll come home with tonnes more knowledge than you left with. Most of our featured partners have ship-based teams with experts who know elements of each destination like the backs of their hands.

The naturalists on board will know the signs that wildlife is near or the hot spots where animals tend to hang out; the geologists can tell you how the landscapes formed; the photographers will teach you how to get the best shots; and the historians and/or anthropologists can tell you the human stories. And depending on where you are in the world and what cruise line you’re travelling with, they’ll lead the shore landings and

Zodiac (small rigid inflatable boats) cruises. Where there’s no on-board team, the cruise lines work closely with on-theground pros to create shore experiences that go beyond the norm, or they invite experts on the ship to share the local lowdown during lectures and workshops.

CITIZEN SCIENCE

Learning the theory’s one thing but getting hands on with a bit of people-powered science is a whole different level of discovery. HX Expeditions (page 6 and 22) are leaders in the ‘Citizen Science’ at sea field, encouraging you to get involved in studies that help us understand more about our planet and the challenges it faces. On each voyage, there are at least two projects in full swing which can involve anything from collecting and testing water samples, image mapping the movement of whales, taking part in sea bird surveys and being on ‘penguin watch’ in Antarctica.

If you choose to take part, you’ll be in good company – HX Expeditions give away 1900 nights to scientists who are driving important research in areas where funding is limited.

DISCOVERY DONE RIGHT

Expedition cruises give us the rare privilege of visiting the world’s most fragile environments and it is everyone’s responsibility to protect them. All our featured ‘ends of the earth’ cruise lines follow strict steps that have been put in place by self-regulatory groups; these include ensuring all flora and fauna are protected (for example, in Svalbard all boots must be cleaned before and after landings and hikes) and leaving no human trace of any visit.

In Antarctica, only 100 people can visit one landing place at any one time to keep all explorations low-impact. If you want to step foot on the Great White Continent, you need to pick a small-ship expedition (page 6 and 10) rather than a scenic stay on board visit on a larger ship.

The newer, purpose-built ships that tend to sail to these farflung regions are the some of most energy efficient at sea and they have cutting edge technology to leave as little impact on the environment as possible.

SEVENTH HEAVEN

HIGHLIGHTS OF ANTARCTICA - 13 NIGHTS

Days 1-3 Buenos Aires

First up is beautiful Buenos Aires, a city that gives serious southern Europe vibes but with a definite Latin American edge. Spend some time recovering from the cross-ocean, crosscontinent flight as you dip into tango joints and steak houses, explore extravagant cemeteries and wander kaleidoscopic streets.

Day 4 Ushuaia

Early this morning, you’ll fly down to Ushuaia, the world’s southern-most city. Here, you’ll board the MS Roald Amundsen or MS Fridtjof Nansen, your home for the following 11 days.

Day 5-6 Drake Passage

And so begins the Antarcticabound adventure. Spend two days cruising across the famed Drake Passage, an explorer’s rite of passage. This is the time to really embrace life on board, from the fascinating lectures and on-deck bird watching with the expedition team to the panoramic sauna and comfy lounges. As you get closer to Antarctica, the anticipation of spotting your first iceberg will build.

Days 7-11 Antarctica

This is what it’s all been leading up to: five days hopping around the frozen landscapes of the Antarctic

Peninsula, seeking out the wildlife and taking in the sheer scale and silence. The experience depends upon the season – the spring (October and November) brings immense sea ice, December and January are prime penguin chick-spotting months, while February and March see the greatest concentration of whales in the region.

Whenever you visit, you can expect one to two landings or Zodiac cruises a day as well as the opportunity to take part in optional adventures like snowshoeing, kayaking and camping. Back on board, there are hot tubs, an

infinity pool at the aft, and three restaurants: Aune, Fredheim and the suite-class restaurant Lindstrøm. The evenings bring time to reflect and a hint of what’s to come in optional briefings.

Days 12-13 Drake Passage

The last leg of the expedition is the two-day voyage back across the famed Drake Passage.

Day 14 Buenos Aires

You’ll step back on to South American soil in Ushuaia before taking the flight up to the Argentinian capital. You could continue your holiday on an estancia, at Iguazu Falls or in Rio de Janiero.

PRE-EXPEDITION

There’s a pit stop on your journey to the Great White Continent in Buenos Aires – Argentina’s Europeanesque capital. It’s colourful, cool and cultural and deserves at least a couple of days of your time to do it justice. Neighbourhoods come in all shapes, sizes and styles; don’t miss technicolour La Boca, boho San Telmo and trendy Palermo.

BEFORE YOUR CRUISE

At the footstep of the Andes, sits Santiago, slimline Chile’s cool capital. It’s buzzing with a mixed bag of neighbourhoods but with enough green spaces for chilled moments. Head to the top of Cerro San Cristobal or Cerro Santa Lucia for the views, wander through the Plaza de Armas, and book winery day trips to try the cab savs of the Maipo Valley.

AFTER YOUR CRUISE

Linking capital to capital, the voyage ends in Buenos Aires, the cultural heart and hub of Argentina. The city is your oyster for a couple of days post cruise, with eclectic barrios to wander through, parrillas (steakhouses) to dine in, and tango shows to be marvelled at. Alternatively, swap the city for las pampas and bed down at a home-from-home estancia.

ANTARCTICA CRUISING

Seriously scenic cruising is the order of your days in Antarctica. Conditions will dictate the eventual route, but you’ll sail through ice-scattered channels as the on-board naturalists narrate the from-deck sightings, be they birds, points of interest, whales or seals. You will remain on the ship during your time in the region with no landings or smaller boat trips.

Hear from the Expedition team as they tell you how each day will unfold and head out on cruises, nature walks or cultural encounters. Expect a few Seabourn surprises along the way

and even brave a polar plunge (but check with your doctor first) – it’s cold water ‘swimming’ in the extreme.

Days 12-13 Drake Passage

Time to head back across the Drake Passage, the stretch of Southern Ocean between Antarctica and South America. Perhaps use the time to try out the spa, sift through your hundreds of images or just drink, dine and relax.

Day 14 Ushuaia

The ship arrives back into Ushuaia, a town surrounded

by the rugged natural landscapes of Tierra del Fuego National Park and the Beagle Channel.

Days 15-19 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Start the journey north to Rio de Janeiro, flying back through Buenos Aires. You’ll have a few days to soak up the vibes of the ‘marvellous city’, ascending to the top of mountains, seeing and being seen on in beachfront barrios and feeling the energetic beat of the samba.

BEFORE YOUR CRUISE

While in Brazil, it’d be rude not to fly by Rio de Janeiro for some city slicking, beach hopping and icon spotting. Tick off top spots like Corcovado, Sugar Loaf Mountain, Copacabana and Ipanema, but also get to know some cool neighbourhoods like the bijou and boho Lapa (check out the dance halls), and Centro, where most of the city’s monuments and museums are.

AFTER YOUR CRUISE

It’s just a short hop of a flight from the end point of your cruise, Puerto Rico, to the Dominican Republic. From megacity to majorly pretty: next up is Paraty, a spot so stunning and historically significant, UNESCO have made it a World Heritage Site.

This Atlantic Forest-cloaked island with lagoons, boulder strewn beaches and not a car to be seen, is the jewel in Brazil’s coastal crown.

Day 14 Buzios, Brazil

Probably the most famous of Brazil’s beach retreats, Buzios is the holiday destination of choice for stylish, in-the-know locals.

Day 15 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Last but by no means least is Rio, a city that moves to a sultry samba beat. You’ll disembark at the port and make your way to your hotel.

Split your time in the ‘Marvellous City’ between sightseeing, people watching on the beach, and experiencing rodizio service at Brazilian barbecue joints (churrascarias).

Pass through Iceland’s longest fjord, Eyjafjörður en route to Akureyri, the island’s second largest city. The gorgeous Goðafoss (the ‘waterfall of the gods’), Lake Myvatn and the geothermal wonders of Námaskarð are all visited on the included HX excursion.

The town of Húsavík is a base for whale-watching trips in

Skjálfandi Bay from April to October. On an optional marine-life-seeking trip, you may see minke or humpback whales as well as whitebeaked dolphins and harbour porpoises. After departing Húsavík, you’ll sail round Grimsey Island and briefly pop into the Arctic Circle.

Day 8 Bakkagerði

The birdwatchers’ dream of Bakkagerði, a tiny town full of folk law tales, is home to puffins, kittiwakes, eiders and fulmars. Keep your eyes peeled as you wander through the valleys and by cliffs for the nesting birds.

Day 9 Heimaey

The petite Vestmannaeyjar island of Heimaey is today’s focus. It sits just off the south coast and has been dubbed the ‘Pompeii of the north’ thanks to the sudden eruption

of Eldfell in 1973 which buried many of the town’s houses. You could take an included walk on the lava fields or treat yourself to a boat ride to spot puffins and other bird species along the cliffs.

Days 10 Reykjavik

Once you’re back in Reykjavik, you will have completed your circumnavigation. From the capital, you could extend your holiday and head to Selfoss where you can base yourself for Golden Circle adventures.

You’ll touch down in Iceland’s small but perfectly formed capital, Reykjavik, and press pause for a couple of days before boarding. It’s colourful, cool, coastal and has a beautiful Old Town and Old Harbour. Take a dip in local hot springs (Sky Lagoon has some of the best views), try a worldfamous Icelandic hot dog and wander around Tjornin or along the sea front.

Once you’ve completed your deep Iceland dive, there’s the option to base yourself in Selfoss, the gateway to the island’s famed Golden Circle. Day 1 Oslo

A shortish hop over the North Sea takes you to the Norwegian capital city. Spend the rest of the day taking in the views from the Opera House roof, taking a boat trip to the islands, or heading up to the one-of-akind Vigeland Sculpture Park.

Day 2 Longyearbyen

It’s time to fly up to the far, far north on a charter flight from Oslo. Land in Longyearbyen, the main town on the Svalbard island of Spitsbergen, where you’ll board the Silver Endeavour (transfers may be by Zodiac).

Days 3-8 Svalbard’s Northern Region

For the next six days the northern coast of

Spitsbergen, with its striking fjords and bays, are your oyster. You’ll head out on Zodiac cruises and landings curated and led by the incredible Expedition Experts. The conditions will shape your adventures, but the plan will be to see glaciers, cliffs that are rich with bird life and important historic landing sites; and you’ll also seek out polar bears, walruses and other local wildlife as you go. If you’re up for a more active experience, you could explore the coast by kayak or take to the hiking trails (for an extra cost).

Day 9 Bear Island

The journey back to mainland Norway includes a pit stop in the most southerly reaches

of Svalbard, Bear Island (Bjørnøya). It’s a great spot for bird watchers as its soaring cliffs are home to seemingly countless sea birds; if conditions allow, you’ll hop into the Zodiacs and follow the base of the cliffs to take in the extraordinary natural beauty.

Day 10 Skarsvag (Nordkapp)

The focus flips to the farflung North Cape, the ‘top of Europe’, where you can look back north across the Barents Sea and reminisce on all the incredible moments of your voyage. You’ll dock near the village of Skarsvag on the sparsely populated island of Magerøya and make your way out on adventures from there.

Days 11-13 Tromsø

You’ll leave the Silver Endeavour today but that doesn’t have to mean the end of your trip – we recommend spending a couple of days in the Arctic capital before heading home.

Right at top of the Oslofjord inlet and backed by forested foothills, Norway’s capital city has natural surroundings that really set the tone for your adventure. It’s the most urban the trip will get but with that comes plenty to see, do, eat and drink; parks, cultural landmarks, theatres, opera houses, bars, restaurants and coffee shops galore are all right on your doorstep.

AFTER YOUR CRUISE

The ‘Arctic capital’ of Tromsø couldn’t wish for a better scenic setting: it sits pretty on the island of Tromsøya and is surrounded by mountain peaks and the waters of the Tromsøysundet strait. For a few days post-cruise you can soak up the small city vibes downtown and head up Mount Storsteinen by gondola (or 1200 steps) for the best views.

COAST WITH THE MOST

A coast hugger. A national icon. A different way of cruising. This Norway staple from Bergen and back again is steeped in a whole lot of history but has been tweaked for a 21st-Century audience.

THE COASTAL EXPRESS (SUMMER ITINERARY) - 16 NIGHTS

Day 1 Bergen

Begin in delightful Bergen.

Day 2 Bergen

Head for the port and board your home-from-home.

Day 3 Ålesund & the Fjords

Cruise along Nordfjord en route to Ålesund and then head for the deep-sided Geirangerfjord. The final call of the day is Molde.

Day 4 Trondheim

Today’s focus is the Trondheim Fjord and the former Viking capital. You’ll have a few hours here to explore or treat yourself to a guided experience.

Day 5 Bodø & the Arctic Circle

The rest of the journey north

is an Arctic one as the ship crosses the Arctic circle.

After a few quick ports of call, stretch your legs on an afternoon walk in Bodø. By the evening, you’ll be sailing through the Lofoten Islands.

Day 6 Tromsø

After some scenic morning cruising and handful of delivery pauses, sail into Tromsø, the ‘capital of the Arctic’.

Day 7 Honningsvåg

You’ll reach the tip top of continental Europe today when you stop in Honningsvåg, gateway to the North Cape.

Day 8 Kirkenes

The final leg before the turnaround point of the

journey takes you to Kirkenes, a town with a unique history, culture and Barents Sea landscape.

Day 9 Hammerfest & the North

The return journey follows the same route but the ports visited at night on the way up will be daytime ports. The longest stop of the day will be in Hammerfest.

Day 10 Svolvær & the Archipelagos

Today, it’s all about sailing in and around the Vesterålen and Lofoten archipelagos with a couple of hours spent in Svolvær.

Day 11 Brønnøysund

It’s time to dip back out of the Arctic Circle (with a

celebratory spoonful of cod liver oil!) and take in the beauty of the world heritagelisted Helgeland Coast.

Day 12 Trondheim & Kristiansund

Make a return visit to Trondheim early this morning before spending the rest of the day sailing down to Kristiansund.

Day 13 Bergen to Copenhagen

By the early afternoon, you’ll be sailing back into Bergen. Then fl y down to Copenhagen.

Days 14-17 Copenhagen

A couple of days in the Danish capital will complete your Scandi adventure.

TRIP NOTES

BEFORE YOUR CRUISE

Colourful houses and warehouses backed by oh-so green mountains welcome you to artsy Bergen. It’s the gateway to your voyage and a world of spectacular fjords. Wander the streets to check out its one-of-a-kind wooden architecture and street art, or head up a lofty peak (Mount Floyen is the most famous and accessible) for the jaw-dropping city and harbour views.

AFTER YOUR CRUISE

Swap one colourful coastal city bookend for another with a short stay in cool-asice Copenhagen. A couple of full days of sightseeing should suffice; it’ll give you enough time to lose yourself in the historic Indre By district, try some typically Danish dishes and coffee, and feel the magic of Tivoli Gardens, the most charming theme park you’ll ever encounter.

HURTIGRUTEN

A HISTORIC ROUTE

As you follow the Coastal Express route, you’ll be following in 130 years of travellers’ footsteps. Since 1893, postal ships that have plied this path have been a lifeline for towns and villages that can only be reached by water. Today, seven ships stop at 34 ports between Bergen and Kirkenes, connecting communities and showcasing some serious scenic splendour.

EXPRESS EXPERIENCE

This isn’t your usual cruise. Instead of stopping in one port per day, these working ships follow a schedule of short delivery stops in some places and longer pauses in others. During these extended visits, you can get off and explore, but the focus is mainly on embracing the slow travel vibes and taking in the scenery from the deck. It’s authentic, unhurried and unpretentious.

Hurtigruten has been the spirit and tradition of Norway since 1893, caring for its coast, connecting its people and inviting the world to travel as a local. The food is typically Norwegian, and the crew’s knowledge of the towns and landscapes is exceptional.

THE FLEET

Seven different ships sail this route, including hybrid ships such as MS Kong Harald and MS Nordlys, and the fully refurbished heritage ships like MS Vesterålen. Each one has at least a couple of restaurants (most with three), an Expedition Team, a fitness room and cosy cabins and suites.

MAKE IT EPIC

Each day, there’s a handful of add-on excursions, some designed and led by the Expedition team. They switch up seasonally so it’s worth checking what’s on offer when to decide when you travel. To fit in with the voyage’s unique schedule, you may get off the ship in one port, go out and explore and then get back on board at a later port.
