A region rich in contrasts

Nature & Culture

Like no other region in Tyrol, Kufsteinerland combines the contrasts of town and country, alpine landscape and cultural heritage. In addition to the town of Kufstein, Kufsteinerland comprises eight villages – each with its own character and special charm.

Located on the border with Bavaria, in the Inn Valley between the Kaisergebirge and the Brandenberg Alps, they form the gateway to the first mountains of Tyrol. Majestic mountains, expansive nature and a historic townscape make the region a multifaceted destination for nature lovers and culture enthusiasts alike.

Kufstein The heart of the region

The medieval town of Kufstein lies on the banks of the River Inn and, with around 20,000 inhabitants, is the second largest town in Tyrol. With its historic old town, winding streets and modern cultural venues, it forms the centre of the Kufstein region – lively, steeped in history and inviting.

Kufstein Fortress is both a landmark and a witness to centuries past. Today, it is a place where history remains alive. In the streets around the town square, small boutiques, cafés and taverns with historic façades combine to create an atmospheric meeting place for locals and visitors alike.

Kufstein is both urban and alpine – a place that preserves tradition, embraces the new and makes summer feel special in its own unique way.

Kufstein Fortress & Heroes‘ Organ

The imposing Kufstein Fortress, the town‘s landmark, sits enthroned on a rock high above the Inn. First mentioned in documents in 1205, it played an important role as a border and defence fortification for centuries. Today, the fortress houses several museums and offers space for events and concerts.

Open daily, in summer from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

A special highlight is the Heroes‘ Organ, one of the largest open-air organs in the world. It has been playing daily at noon since 1931 – audible far beyond the city limits. In July and August, the organ also plays at 6:00 p.m. and at special concerts. Perfect for a balmy summer evening with an aperitif at the Lower Town Square.

The view from the fortress stretches far beyond the Inn Valley, making a visit here a cultural and scenic experience at the same time.

Old town flair in Römerhofgasse

Römerhofgasse is one of the most charming corners of Kufstein‘s old town. Cobblestones, historic façades and centuries-old tavern culture give it its special charm. The traditional inn “Auracher Löchl”, the famous Kufstein song “Kennst du die Perle Tirols” (Do you know the pearl of Tyrol), which is known far beyond the city limits.

Today, the alley combines tradition with modern culinary delights: a bar in the tunnel with one of the largest gin collections in the world, sunset drinks in the Panorama Bar high above the Inn River, or the world‘s smallest bridge restaurant – for intimate moments together. Traditional inns and cafés make this place a popular meeting spot for locals and visitors alike.

TIP

Embark on an exciting journey into the past with the night watchman – including a tour of the quaint Römerhofgasse alley. Twice weekly, bookable via the activity programme. See page 35.

Kufstein Historical City Trail

The Kufstein Historical Town Trail invites you on a journey through time, taking you through picturesque alleys and telling moving stories about the fortress mountain. 23 stations and three additional routes with beautiful views combine culture with relaxed discovery on an approximately one-hour walk through the town centre –accompanied by cosy cafés, restaurants and bars.

The trail begins at the Marienbrunnen fountain on the Unterer Stadtplatz. An overview map and puzzle map are available at the starting point and in the information office.

Riedel Glass Manufactory & Museum

The Riedel factory offers exciting insights into the world of glassblowing. offered by the Riedel factory. From a gallery, visitors can watch glassmakers shaping glasses and decanters entirely by hand.

The museum introduces visitors to the world of glassmaking, displays impressive glass artworks and series created over the years, and explains which glass best brings out the best in which wine. The family business, now in its eleventh generation, looks back on over 270 years of craftsmanship.

Walk to Hechtsee

A pleasant walking trail leads from Kufstein through shady forest sections up to Hechtsee , one of the most beautiful natural lakes in the region. On warm summer days, the circular trail invites you to walk around the lake in about an hour. If you want to continue, you can combine the tour with an ascent to Thierberg chapel . There are beautiful views along the way.

Sparchenklamm – with a view to the Geisterschmiedwand

A pleasant, shaded circular walk starts at the Kaiseraufstieg stop and heads towards the Dickichtkapelle (chapel). The path leads through peaceful woodland and offers occasional glimpses of the surrounding landscape. Steel serpentine steps lead steeply down to the Kaiserbach bridge . The forest, rocks and cool water of the stream make this walk a refreshing experience, especially on warm summer days.

The Kufstein region

Bad Häring health resort

In summer, Bad Häring shows its particularly soothing side. Tyrol‘s first and only health resort is nestled in a sunny high valley and invites you to relax and recharge your batteries.

For a long time, the town was characterised by mining and coal production before the healing powers of the sulphur springs were discovered. This exciting development from a mining village to a spa town can be experienced thanks to a themed trail that connects history with the present.

Today, regeneration and well-being are the focus. The sulphur springs at the Vivea Health Hotel promote relaxation and balance. Additional moments of relaxation are offered by the day spas at the Hotel DAS SIEBEN and the Hotel Panorama Royal , which also invite guests to stay longer.

Walking and hiking trails to refreshing waterfalls and around the striking Pölven mountain round off the summer relaxation experience.

Hiking destination Langkampfen

Walking trails lead along green fields, over small bridges and up to the chapel on Kalvarienberg . At the top, there is a wide view over the Inn Valley to the Zahmer Kaiser. A place for relaxed walks, clear views and quiet moments.

If you want to experience the panorama from a new perspective, take off from the region‘s only small airport for a sightseeing flight and enjoy impressive views of the Kufsteinerland from the air.

Schwoich holiday village

In summer, Schwoich shows its enjoyable, open side. Between flowering meadows and gentle slopes, craftsmanship and taste characterise village life. The Bierol brewery stands for creative brewing with character, while the Crownhill distillery produces award-winning fine spirits with regional character.

Whether on a walk or a bike ride across the sunny plateau, sampling regional specialities or consciously enjoying nature. In Schwoich, summer, craftsmanship and authenticity come together in a peaceful and authentic way.

Passions and festival village Erl

In summer, Erl combines culture, architecture and nature to create a harmonious experience. Nestled between green hills and sparse forests, the Passionsspielhaus Erl and the Festspielhaus Erl dominate the townscape. As venues for the Tiroler Festspiele and the Passion Plays , they stand for cultural quality, openness and a centuries-old tradition.

Fancy some opera or classical music?

The events calendar reveals what‘s on offer: kufstein.com/events

Quiet hiking trails lead from Erlerberg through the summer alpine pastures up to the Spitzsteinhaus or the Altkaser Alm , both of which invite you to stop for a bite to eat and enjoy the panoramic views.

A special destination after a stop at the Kranzhornalm is the border peak of Kranzhorn with its two summit crosses, which symbolically connect Austria and Bavaria and offer sweeping views of both countries.

Niederndorf, a place of culinary delights

In summer, Niederndorf is a delightful place in the heart of the Untere Schranne gourmet region. Between green meadows and village life, nature, craftsmanship and cuisine come together in a peaceful, authentic way.

Fine cheese specialities mature over months in the historic rock cellar of the Plangger cheese dairy. An expression of regional care and Tyrolean culinary culture. Old crafts also live on in the Kitzbichler gingerbread bakery Honey, spices and traditional recipes are here with a lot of experience.

This is how Niederndorf presents itself in summer – a place where quality, taste and origin remain noticeable.

Ebbs is a place where summer days are experienced with ease and remain in your memory for a long time.

Thiersee Passion Play village

In summer, the Thiersee Valley shows its bright, expansive side. On the sunny high plateau, Vorderthiersee , Hinterthiersee and Landl combine unspoilt nature and cultural history to form a harmonious whole. The high valley stands for relaxation and vitality. High-quality hotels combine alpine retreats with contemporary comfort. Meadows, forests and the lake characterise the landscape and create space for quiet and active summer days.

Culturally, Thiersee looks back on a special history. In the 1950s, the village was an important location for film productions and, at times, one of the most famous backdrops in Austria. This creative past is still evident today. The village is also closely associated with the Passion Plays , which have been deeply rooted in village life for centuries and are performed every six years.
