Emperor Maximilian I.
One of the most dazzling figures of the day, a clever strategist in all his eccentricity who founded the rise of the Habsburg empire. The self-titled Roman-German Emperor Maximilian I. had the ‘Kaiserturm‘ tower installed in Kufstein as a memorial to himself.
“Maximilian was a playboy who took what he wanted,” says Hugo Oberkofler, head of the Kufstein Fortress and Local History Museum. This also includes the title of Roman-German Emperor. He got endless middle class women pregnant out of wedlock and racked up debt without a care. During his last trip to Tyrol, the terminally ill ruler was met with locked doors at the guesthouses. The landlords were afraid that nobody would settle the bill following the death of the Emperor. He returned full of bitterness to his duchy in Austria, travelling by ship along the river Inn. He was unable to see the ‘Kaiserturm’ tower during this last trip because the preparation work for the construction was only just beginning. >>
Born on 22.03.1459, Maximilian became the RomanGerman King in 1486, Count of Tyrol in 1490 and Archduke of Austria in 1493. In 1508, he crowned himself the Roman-German Emperor. Using a clever marriage policy, he founded the Habsburg empire which extended around the world. He died on 12 January 1519 in Wels, Lower Austria.

A true media personality
Events The fortress will be transformed into an adventure course to mark the Emperor Maximilian anniversary year. All stages of the fortress’s history can be discovered on foot and in places, the past is digitally brought to life. From 13 April, an exhibition of the life and work of the Emperor will be on display in the historic armoury. On 1 June, a festival in honour of Maximilian will be held with the Austria Baroque Company and the ‘Wiltener Sängerknaben’, ‘Wiener Sängerknaben’ and ‘Augsburger Domsingknaben’ boys’ choirs. This year’s ‘Knights’ Festival from 7 to 10 June centres around Emperor Maximilian too: an audience with the Emperor may be requested, the siege of 1504 will be re-enacted and there will also be a surprise during the procession through the town.
Kaiser Ball at the ‘Kaiserturm‘ tower All warriors and fair ladies are invited by the Emperor to attend the unique Kaiser ball at the ‘Kaiserturm‘ tower on 24 August. The Emperor will be treating his guests to some superb costumes for hire, lively music and plenty of food and drink.

He was ‘mediasavvy’ in how he presented his life and used the new printed media such as wood carving and book printing to record his ‘heroic acts’. He sent his autobiographical work ‘Theuerdank’ out to important personalities and he glorified his battles in the ‘Weisskunig’. When Maximilian supported Duke Albrecht of Munich in the War of the Succession of Landshut, he was rewarded with the courts of Rattenberg, Kitzbühel and Kufstein for his state of Tyrol. At this time, Hans von Pienzenau was ‘Facility Manager’ at the fortress. He refused to hand the fortress over to Maximilian and so Maximilian gathered his princes together and organised a show siege. Time was on the side of the 50 defenders because Maximilian’s 8,000 soldiers and 1,000 riders had to be fed and paid. When Maximilian sent for the Purlepaus and Weckauf canons from Innsbruck during a period of ceasefire, the defending forces broke the ceasefire. They tried to flee but were caught. Maximilian ordered them to be beheaded. Following the execution of Hans von Pienzenau and 17 other men, Duke Erich von Braunschweig begged for mercy and saved the others.

“Maximilian was not greatly celebrated in Kufstein. He conferred the town charter on Kufstein and stopped the town from being looted but his new subjects were simply used as tax payers to finance his wars. After proclaiming himself the Roman-German Emperor, he commissioned the construction of the striking canon tower at the fortress. And so the old keep was replaced with the ‘Kaiserturm’ tower,” as Hugo Oberkofler explains. <<

From 5 to 7 July 2019, Kufsteinerland will be all about yoga. Andreas Loh, one of Germany’s best-known yoga instructors, will be with us at the start and offering insight into his life as a composing yogi.
A
nyone wishing to embrace the magic of yoga for three days will find themselves in the best of hands from 5 to 7 July 2019 in Kufsteinerland. With the support of selected regional and international greats of the yoga scene, beginners and advanced participants can take part in yoga sessions, herb workshops and talks about tackling stress and healthy nutrition as well as learning the noble art of these teachings from India. The diverse landscapes of
Kufsteinerland along with its unique locations offer the perfect setting for slowing down and taking some time out. The yogis are accompanied throughout by some atmospheric music, health cuisine and plenty of positive vibes.
A peaceful state of mind We are all born into a world where we are met with different expectations and tasks each and every day. In the face of all these obligations, finding your own way is a particular challenge – especially finding yourself. Yoga can help you to find your place in life, to boost your own instincts and to bring your body, mind and soul into harmony. In India, yoga is not just a form of lifestyle or well-being; it is a form of therapy respected across the land and which has been practised for around 5,000 years. The composer and yogi Andreas Loh knows this too. Andreas explains how he brings his two passions together and what yoga means to him.

Andreas, how did you come into contact with yoga? It was never planned. During a very intense rock ‘n’ roll phase I was playing the drums for hours each day and overexerting myself. My natural health practitioner advised me to try yoga to balance it out. No sooner said than done. So yoga has been my rock ‘n’ roll since 1999. You studied drums and piano at the University of Music in Leipzig. How do you combine your roles as a composer and yoga teacher? During the first 10 years, I was unable to identify any link between yoga and my music. In traditional yoga teaching, music is essentially frowned upon. Unfortunately I developed cancer in 2008 and this drastic experience changed everything. Since then I have been composing and I combine the two components together. Music is essentially just as spiritual as yoga. Heavy metal concerts are comparable with rituals whereby individuals merge together and a sense of unity develops. What is the significance of music in your life? That’s hard to put into words. Essentially hearing is much more precise and profound than seeing. Our sense of sight is much easier to deceive than our sense of hearing. It is no coincidence that the ears are the first sensory organ to form in the human embryo. During particularly intense moments of life, we close our eyes and listen to our inner voice. Music has a special value in my life. I don’t just want to perform at beautiful concerts; I want to be a medium for music and let the melodies flow through my body. No one on earth can explain what music does to us but in my opinion, it is the most important and precious cultural asset on earth.

What motivated you to become a yoga instructor? I ask myself that every day (laughs). After 5 years of practising under the guidance of an instructor, I read that you can only become a master when you teach. And so I began to teach yoga because I didn’t just want to be a master at music. What form of yoga do you teach and what are its particular features? Tala yoga. It’s a yoga system where the exercises are performed in flowing motions, in harmony with breathing and specially composed music. I developed it based on the practice of Ashtanga yoga and years of research into breathing and movement. The aim is to breathe as evenly as possible throughout the entire practice of yoga. I never intended to create a new form of yoga. Tala yoga came to me and challenged me to bring it out into the world. Where does the term Tala yoga come from? The term Tala is derived from Sanskrit and refers to rhythm or musical pace. In Indian music, a Tala is the basic rhythmical pattern at the core of each piece of music. Just like every word in Sanskrit, Tala has additional meanings too: Tala refers to the essential nature or soul present in everything and when we view the world and universe, we can see that everything is all about rhythm. Breathe in, breathe out, ebb and flow, day and night – even life and death are in rhythm. Of course, the intervals in-between can be too great and so it is difficult for us to see the connection. You also offer your visitors Yoga Piano. What’s that all about? Unlike the dynamic Tala Yoga, Yoga Piano is a peaceful and regenerative practice. >>

Highlights of the yoga.days
This mostly involves lying down in a relaxed pose while I accompany the process of finding peace on the piano. This state of hearing has a meditative effect. The conscious and attentive hearing of music guides the listener inside of himself or herself, to his or her thoughts and feelings and can lead to greater self-awareness through an attentive attitude. What does yoga mean for you personally? I am firmly convinced that everyone can learn something at a deeper lever. What of our existence? What does it mean to live? We are all seeking answers to these questions. In order to track down the answers, we need a kind of mirror. Yoga can help us to experience and find out more about ourselves, about what is important and what is not important. The key thing is to bring peace to the mind. Nowadays, most people are almost driven by compulsion. As soon as there is a gap in this process – a break or a time to be quiet – we get out our mobile phone. It is rare to simply ‘be’ and that’s why so many people experience burn out. Yoga helps to escape from this current and live a more conscious and attentive life. I also try to do this in my everyday life, to pause briefly and feel my existence. Essentially the mind does not want to be brought to a state of rest but through yoga, we can slow our thoughts down and create a state of conflict in which we are able to identify ourselves. This phenomenon can be compared to a relationship. The best way to get to know your partner is during a conflict situation after all, right? What are the most important things you want to share with your students? There is only one person responsible for your happiness and unhappiness and that’s you. The things we think and do have a direct impact on our brain, our attitude and finally our reality. Through the power of positive thinking, we can create our own reality. Last question, do you have a favourite exercise? Generally any exercise which I have mastered well and which boosts my ego (laughs). To be honest I find that it is no longer about learning. So my ‘favourite exercise’ is the backwards bend. I still find this position the hardest today, despite many years of practice. But I try my best to relax into this barrier. <<

Every year as the days draw shorter and temperatures fall, the animals return from the meadows back down into the valley after summer. But where does this cattle driving ceremony come from and what is its significance in the present day? We take a local look at Kufsteinerland.
I
n small groups, they trot along Kufstein’s Oberer Stadtplatz square – some walking quickly and others strutting along the road as if savouring the attention, like on a catwalk. The cows wear colourful crowns on their heads, decorated with flowers and mottos or, in some cases, religious imagery. The sounds of the beautiful cowbells chiming can be heard in the valley. The animals are accompanied by their farmers and the people who spent summer up in the meadows with them.
Alpine summer in the mountains Why do the cows spend the summer grazing in the lush Alpine meadows? Because the grass is particularly nutritious in higher locations, dotted with wild herbs and is slower-growing at lower temperatures.

During this time, the meadows in the valley are used for hay production so that the animals have ample hay in winter. Many farmers in Kufsteinerland produce their own hay milk and this characterises the exceptional quality of the local dairy products. In the meadows, the animals are free to graze under the open skies. They brave the weather and are constantly on the move across vast areas of land. On the steep descents, small horizontal paths are visible which have been pressed into the grass by the animals in their search for tasty food.
Well-being back in the valley Despite the romantic imagery of, for example, the cows of the Steinbergalm before the magnificent mountain panorama of the Wilder Kaiser, there are also various hazards presented by the Alpine summer: often the weather turns more quickly than in the valley and the rough terrain conceals a considerable risk of injury. This gave rise to the ceremonial driving of the cattle back down into the valley: when the people and animals have survived the summer up in the lofty mountain heights, the cattle driving ceremony (or ‘Almabtrieb’) is a lively celebration of gratitude for all concerned. The animals are cleaned up and decorated. The cows are given a fresh new cowbell and their heads carefully adorned: the impressive crowns are made from twigs and flowers bound together and decorated with colourful ribbons. A ritual which is celebrated with honour and pride. The oldest cow in the herd is usually the lead cow which guides the procession.

In the past, the cattle driving ceremony was only a festival for the farmers and their animals. But at the start of the 20th century, the custom caught the eye of the tourism industry. Since then, the cattle ceremony has become a fixed celebration in the community. A large number of spectators await the cattle down in the valley. In Kufstein, the cattle driving ceremony takes place regularly at the end of September. The streets are lined with curious sightseers who want to watch these wonderful animals on their journey back home. In Thiersee, people gather in the village square in Landl to await the cows as they return home. The cattle ceremony has been accompanied by a supporting programme for many years, not just musical: traditional costume associations and local custom groups show off their talents while other associations provide refreshments for the curious spectators. The focus is on regional treats -Tyrolean doughnuts (‘Kiachl’), Zillertal doughnuts (‘Krapfen’) and home-made cheese and bacon. This day of celebration mostly also marks the start of the stormy season. The cattle driving ceremony is an event for all ages – but the focus remains on the animals and ensuring they return home safely. >>

Young stallions in the mountains The Haflinger stallion driving ceremony in Ebbs 12 October 2019 from 12:30 A more recent tradition is the stallion driving ceremony. This tradition began in the Haflinger village of Ebbs just three years ago and involves a big festival during which the stallions are driven back down from the meadows, attended by Haflinger breeders, horse enthusiasts and interested visitors. And that’s despite the young stallions from the Ebbs stud farm spending every summer in an idyllic meadow on the Erlerberg since 1974.
Stallion breeding with tradition The stud farm in Ebbs has dedicated itself to breeding Haflinger horses: promising foals from the area of the Haflinger Breeding Association of Tyrol, Vorarlberg and parts of Salzburg come to the stud farm in Ebbs every autumn. Here they are trained and reared under optimal conditions. Only the very best (around a third of those selected) are ‘approved’ at the end of the three years at the stud farm and have the prospect of becoming a sought-after stallion for breeding. The young stallions spend two summers in the meadow where they are looked after by Hans Taxauer, the ‘master of the meadow’. “The most important thing is communication; I know each individual animal by its name”. In the meadow, the animals have access to an area of 28 hectares of land where they can let off steam and graze on whatever the mountains have to offer. The natural nutrition is beneficial both mentally and physically. “Our Haflingers are renowned for their surefootedness, contentment and serenity – their summer in the meadows plays a key role in this,” explains Robert Mair, head of the stud farm in Ebbs.
Presenting the young stallions On the second weekend in October, the young stallions are guided back down into the valley. Thirty Tyrolean young
Haflinger breeders travel to Tyrol for the occasion. The animals are washed and after five months enjoying unbridled freedom, a halter is placed on them for the first time again. The approximately four hour parade takes the animals from the Erlerberg to Niederndorf and from here on to Ebbs. The young Haflingers are eagerly awaited back down in the valley. In the morning, while the young stallions are still making their way down, the next generation of colts is presented in the arena at the Ebbs stud farm. The arrival of the young stallions is announced by a horn player: the animals, decorated with flowers, then enter the arena. They are proudly presented to the audience one by one before being released into the paddock. The young stallions rush off with flowing manes. With an e-bike, the journey up the mountain is a joy for leisure bikers too. Even where the route gets steeper in parts, couples and friends of different ability levels can still explore the mountains together and create lasting memories. E-bikes expand your biking radius and also provide time to explore the surroundings with all your senses: the earthy fragrance of the cool forest, the diverse plant world. And if you are lucky, you might happen to see a deer grazing at the edge of a forest. From each starting point in Kufsteinerland, you can cycle up numerous interesting mountain peaks via meadow, forest and wooded trails. And thanks to the network of paths extending over 1,000 km along with 77 battery charging stations, there is nothing to stop you planning an extensive tour. There are tours suitable for beginners through to enthusiastic e-bikers, enabling you to experience nature from the saddle. And with a hearty snack at one of the traditional lodges and a bit of practice, the journey down into the valley will be a real treat!

Tips for a good start to e-biking To ensure that you exercise in a way which boosts your health and stamina while providing the most effective motor power, the motorised support and gear selection should always be adapted to the ascent in question.
When cycling uphill, you should sit on the saddle. On steeper sections, pull your shoulders towards the handlebars and slide forwards, keeping your bottom on the nose of the saddle. To move onto a steep section, set the bike at a 45°angle to tackle the incline, select a low gear, switch the motor onto turbo and pull your shoulders forwards towards the handlebar. Your foot on the side of the mountain should be on the ground and your foot on the side of the valley should be on the pedal which should be set at the 11 o’clock position.
When cycling downhill, the best way to control the e-bike is to stand up on the pedals with your arms pressed down on the handlebars over the front wheel. To protect your wrists, keep in a straight line with your forearms.

Passionate about Lederhosen Christian Leitner is one of the last leather tailors in Tyrol. He preserves the ancient traditions of Lederhosen production and creates unique pieces with living scars and rye flour.

S
crewdrivers of various sizes are hanging directly above a pair of leather scissors and bundle of tape measures. Some scraps of leather are laid out on the table alongside an old sewing machine. “My grandfather used it for sewing,” says Christian Leitner of Kufstein, visibly proud. Looking around the room, there are yet more sewing machines which have been in use for decades. And a flat iron which could easily be an antique. But there is nothing better to use in his work, says Christian Leitner, one of the last five leather tailors working in the entire North and East Tyrol region. “I was actually forced into it,” he laughs. As the only son, it was clear from the outset that he would take over the business and workshop. Even though Christian took a slight detour along the way when he discovered a passion for photography. But somehow he has always been a leather tailor deep down at heart (or ‘Säckler’ as the profession is known). “Actually it’s no wonder because I was always in the workshop even as an infant and got used to it from a young age”. While he was at school, he did his homework in the workshop of the traditional company. Exactly how long the company has been in existence nobody knows. “It was around 120 years ago that it all began with my great-grandmother’s second husband. He was a leather tailor and transformed the shoe-maker business run by my great-grandfather into a leather tailors after my great-grandfather passed away”.
All about the rye flour The salesroom is not big but it is cosy. The scent of leather lingers in the air. When asked whether he can still remember making his first pair of ledernhosen, Christian laughs. “Oh yes, only too well, it was my journeyman’s work. I was unbelievably nervous because I had never made a whole pair of Lederhosen on my own apart from at vocational college. Here at the company, everyone was always responsible for just one part of the process. My mother embroidered, my grandfather did the cutting, my grandmother the sticking and selling. And I sewed”. Since the death of his mother, Christian Leitner has been running the business with his wife, Johanna Moser. Now he cuts, sticks and sews while she embroiders. 30 hours of hand craftsmanship go into each pair of Lederhosen. Christian Leitner still uses the classic rye flour pulp as an adhesive, just as his great-grandmother’s second husband used to do. >>

“The rye flour is mixed with water. When the pulp is dry, it sticks perfectly”. It takes two days to dry. This holds up the production process somewhat but Christian Leitner does not want to switch over to modern adhesives. “The result is different. With rye flour pulp, the finish is much more attractive and the bond is considerably better”.
Living scars He energetically spreads a half-finished pair of Lederhosen out onto the table. Black lines indicate where a hand-embroidered pattern will be added to the leather. And then comes an explanation of the lines. The sap from an acacia tree is applied using a goose feather and defines where the embroidered lines will be. The patterns are derived primarily from his grandfather who designed them himself. Christian carefully strokes the leather. “Can you see that, that’s a scar. Probably from a fight. I use leather from wild deer and not bred animals. Scars left behind from the animal’s life in freedom create a living structure of how things were”. And with these words, he picks up the leather scissors because the next pair of trousers is waiting to be cut out. <<

t the beginning, the journey from Kufstein via the Thierseestraße up to Lake Thiersee is the same as an excursion to the Pendling. But to find this beautiful spot, you have to continue on further to Lake Hinterthiersee. Once here, several paths lead on upwards. You can set off from the village centre via Modal at the Hotel Thaler or straight from the Jausenstation Wieshof snack stop at the ski descent. If you follow the signs to the ‘Höhlensteinhaus’, you will come across one of the most wonderful meadows in Kufsteinerland.

Following narrow paths through the forest, past information about attractive mushrooms which are not to be taken home, you eventually come to some beautiful clearings with wonderful views of the rocky mountain massifs. The Höhlensteinhaus – a treasure to explore The Erharter family waits to greet its guests here. The traditional lodge is situated in the midst of the lush green meadows and has its own garden and free-range hens which always enjoy meeting new people. Everyone is treated like a regular guest. You have the feeling of visiting the family at their home for a coffee, snack and pleasant chat. But the daily work goes on too: the washing blows outside in the late summer wind and the wood is sawn up and stacked for use on the tiled stove in the lounge and woodfired oven in the kitchen. Children can have fun in the play area while their parents relax on the terrace. And if Mother Nature is not on side, the wonderful wood-panelled lounge with its tiled stove is the perfect place and truly unique. The small size of the lounge simply enhances its cosy vibe.
Dreamy views The summit cross of the Feuerköpfl can be seen from the terrace. The ascent from the Höhlensteinhaus is not strenuous and only takes 10 to 15 minutes. Once at the top, it is immediately clear why a detour to the summit cross is worthwhile. From here, you can enjoy dreamy views of the Inntal valley and Kaisergebirge peaks. T
he name might sound strange and raise the question of what this picturesque treasure has to do with bananas. But looking down from above with a bit of imagination will soon give you the answer. The Bananensee in Schwoich is in the shape of a banana and lives up to its name! But this is the only connection this natural bathing lake has with the yellow fruit. It does, however, have various special features. The Bananensee lake is not really a lake but rather a biotope which is supplied with crystal-clear drinking water. The then concrete basin was developed into Tyrol’s first biotope bathing lake in 1998. Half of the approx. 2,300 m² water surface has since been used for bathing while the other half is used for regeneration purposes.
The Wilder Kaiser massif on one side and the lush green of the nearby forest on the other. An image of nature which is reflected around the lake. The green of the sunbathing area merges into the warm shingle beach. The nature experience is not limited to the bathing lake either. Two years ago, a lake promenade was set up, starting and ending at the lake car park. A 1.2 km circular running trail through the forest incorporating eight training stations with fun names for some amusing moments. <<

Greenhouses as far as the eye can see - in Eichelwang near Ebbs, thousands of plants of all sizes are growing and thriving. But the Hödnerhof has established itself as an event location, not just a garden of experiences.

Plucking art and knickknacks Any frequent visitor of flea markets will know that an old saying is relevant here: the early bird catches the worn. Early-risers grab the best bargains. Many exhibitors and visitors travel a long way in pursuit of their favourite hobby in the halls and car park of the Hödnerhof: buying and selling. Long tables contain a vast hotchpotch of items: cups and plates, toys and jewellery, clothing and much more await new visitors. Some bargains can be grabbed for a euro, some are sold for less than their value – the professionals can see at a glance which items they want to buy. Some flea market finds turn out to be real treasures.
Harvesting beats and ballads Getting up early is not easy when you have been at a lively party the night before: the greenhouses of the Hödnerhof are ideal for late nights too! They are often transformed into an oversized night club. Radio broadcasters of various genres organise impressive events in the halls. The regular over30s parties are legendary. Bodies rock to the gentle beat of the music. The greenhouses offer plenty of space for a large dance floor. Bars are installed at the sides to provide the party people with fuel: the obligatory drinks. That's how the over-30s become ageless as they celebrate – after all, you are only as old as you feel!

Each year at the end of August, the Ebbs flower parade and traditional Hansi Hinterseeer open-air concert attract thousands of visitors to Kufsteinerland.
Folk musician Hansi Hinterseer has captivated millions of people with his singing and each year, his performance at the Hödnerhof attracts up to 5,000 visitors to the idyllic landscape. This completes the circle because Hansi Hinterseer aims to impress the mountains and nature with his music – this is his homeland. Hansi Hinterseer’s performance will take place on 23 August this year and is the highlight of Austria’s largest flower parade in Ebbs, alongside the beautifully decorated floats. Franz Hörhager, Head of the Hödnerhof, has been co-organiser of the event from the outset and is responsible for many of the figures. Naked polystyrene forms are decorated by hand with hundreds of flowers. The magnificent floats then parade through Ebbs under the watchful eyes of crowds of spectators.
Collecting plants and personalities The Hödnerhof is a very special events location but despite that, it never overlooks its core business – plant breeding. Ebbs is home to the entire production process and the largest sales space in Tyrol. The focus here is on self-marketing. The plants are not passed on to wholesalers and instead are sold directly. Two additional branches are supplied along with the Hödnerhof itself. The Hödnerhof’s combination of event location and experience gardens provides plants of all sizes with a place to develop. Flea market sellers put down roots and pitch their tents here, wallflowers are transformed into charming night owls by dark in the night club halls and music lovers blossom. Everything here grows and thrives in the greenhouses of the Hödnerhof near Ebbs. <<

It all began with a farmyard in Eichelwang near Ebbs which was farmed by the Hörhager family. ‘Hödnerhof’ was the name of this farm and so this was adopted as the name of the experiences garden too. From 1982, the property gradually switched over from a farm to horticulture: the first greenhouse was built in 1983. Up until 1992, the ever-expanding greenhouses contained 8,000m2 of space. This figure has now increased to 19,000m2. The company has been run as a family business since the outset. Barbara HörhagerMader has now taken over the management of the business along with her husband, Robert Mader. Franz and Maria Hörhager, who built up the business, are still involved with current events and can be found at the Hödnerhof still on an almost daily basis.

n the wall behind him is a panel featuring the names of the champion marksmen since 1986. Lieutenant Andreas Edenhauser was this year’s lucky winner and as such holds the title of champion marksman. However the Bad Häring rifle association is not so much about shooting, as the Captain Alexander Biechl explains. He has been a member of the association for the last 30 years. He was 22 when the Captain of the day, Pepi Ager, approached him and his friend. Together the young men joined the traditional association, not knowing what was in store. There are two pictures of Andreas Hofer hanging on the wood-panelled wall. “Yes, everyone associates the rifle association with Andreas Hofer and the Tyrolean struggle for freedom of 1809 but its history dates back even further. In fact, it has been around for a very long time,” explains First Lieutenant Franz Wurzer. He came to the Bad Häringer rifle association in 2002. Initially, his membership was something of a means to an end. “I married someone in Bad Häring and wanted to integrate into the village community. And joining an association is the best way”. Add to this that one of his good friends at the time was the Captain. Friendship is generally one of the main reasons for new members joining. “The special thing about it is probably our comradeship,” Alexander Biechl says of the enthusiasm of its members. “The association includes virtually all age groups and that’s what makes it so great. At the start, at the age of 22, I thought what do I want to do with those ‘oldies’ but the association is nothing without its young people and vice versa. The rifle association is truly a well-protected nest”. >>

Camp with May pipes Alexander Biechl is proud of the traditional dress they wear, as he explains. “That’s what defines the marksmen to the outside world. Our appearance has a somewhat military feel when we are parading. That’s a part of the rifle association and its history”. His grandfather went to fight in the First World War aged just 17 and returned half starved at 21. Alexander Biechl sees the rifle association as a means of remembering and honouring people like his grandfather. “We want to uphold this history, this commitment to our land”. In our fast-paced world, they also uphold Tyrolean traditions and during the annual camp weekend, even carve May pipes with the children. “We put on our traditional dress and march. But it’s not just about that; mostly it’s about being together and making something happen together in the village. For example, we also take care of the Bad Häring village nativity, set it up and modify it as appropriate throughout Advent”.
Shooting target discs The words ‘Hochzeits-Schießen’ (wedding shooting) are featured in large blue letters on the outer circle of the disc. One of many panels to decorate the wall. “If one of us is celebrating a big birthday or getting married, it is customary to donate a target disc. Of course, we shoot at this and then the winner is added in style,” says Franz Wurzer. All of his children have now become members of the rifle association. From the flower girl to the sutler. And they are also all in attendance when the rifle association holds its annual wine festival. This is a very traditional event - unplugged with traditional folk music and a sociable get-together. <<
Hofer is a local hero among the people of Tyrol and his dedication is marked by a series of monuments. There is also a monument to Andreas Hofer on the Kalvarienberg in Kufstein.

Historically speaking, Tyrol has always had strong ties with Bavaria. The green river Inn plays a key role in the development of the communities and solidarity – both on the Tyrolean and Bavarian side. Bridges have been built for crossing this natural border more easily and connecting places together. One of them is the famous Zollhausbrücke bridge which has linked Erl in Tyrol with the Bavarian towns of Niederaudorf and Oberaudorf since 1895.
W
e step back in time to the year 1882. At this time, the citizens of Erl were furious because it had just been announced that the toll charge for the ferry would increase by 200%. But this was not a decision which the locals could overturn because it was already set in law. Up until this point, people paid 6 Krone there and 6 Krone back, whether on foot, horseback or horse and carriage. The neighbouring communities like Erl, Niederndorf, Oberaudorf and Niederaudorf were granted a 2/3 reduction on this price and only paid 2 Krone per trip. But this discount was not included in the new law. So what now? Few of them could afford the horrendous new toll charge. Take a different route across the Inn? No that was not an option because the next ferry was based in Eichelwang near Kufstein. The nearby railway station in Oberaudorf was also best accessed by ferry over the river Inn – and this was enormously important for the famous Passion Plays. So this exorbitant increase was a real tragedy both in terms of economics and tourism!

This situation could not be tolerated for long – the legislative authorities had made the wrong decision. But what were the possibilities of for literally ‘sailing around’ these massive increases? In 1891, the then parish apothecary Schartner put forward an idea about building a bridge. His idea was very popular. But the construction costs were very high and Erl was not able to provide the financing at this time. But one individual who particularly liked the idea of the bridge refused to give up. Municipal administrator Johann Kneringer was determined that the bridge construction should go ahead and finally managed to convince the community committee to take on the project. They were on shaky ground because in addition to the 30,000 guilders (fl) it would cost, there was the risk in the worst-case scenario that the wooden bridge would not stand up to the force of the rapid-flowing river Inn. The project was blessed and the wooden bridge was officially opened on 1 May 1895. The construction company Steinbeis and Comp. from Brannenburg in Bavaria completed the construction in just two months. The final costs were 35,000 guilders (fl) including the customs duties.

The bridge stood firm until 1977. Unfortunately in this year, a crossing lorry overestimated the maximum height and caused substantial damage to the bridge. But ultimately it was the flood of the century in 1985 which hit Bavaria’s last great wooden bridge hardest. It was closed to traffic due to a danger of collapse. Reconstruction of this link between Tyrol and Bavaria began five years later. Today the Zollhausbrßcke is an attractive means of crossing the beautiful river Inn for cyclists and pedestrians alike. <<

here is lots of chatter and laughter on the ground floor. On the first floor, work is underway on various free projects which have found a home here. A tradition has become established: associations are making use of the former guestrooms. On the second floor, artists and young creatives are at work. And regional companies too are benefitting from life in the building – this could be the future of the Gasthof Post.
Space for innovative ideas "We don’t know yet what the spatial layout will look like,” explains Kathrin Baumgartner, project coordinator. The project is being funded by the LEADER-Region KUUSK with EU funding but the community of Niederndorf is supporting the redevelopment. “It is important for us that life returns to this building. We are gathering together our ideas as a community. But we are not involved at a financial level,” explains Mayor Christian Ritzer. The owner Franz Wäger sees it as an intangible gain for Niederndorf. “My hope is that the opportunity we are offering here will be used. Financially speaking, the investment should be covered by the revenue generated”. "As part of the first phase, we developed a vision as a project group as to what could be done with the old building,” says Kathrin Baumgartner. The bakery cultural centre ‘Die Bäckerei Kulturbackstube’ from Innsbruck serves as a role model for the project and was secured as a partner. “For us, this is a great opportunity to pass on our experience,” explains Christoph Grud from the bakery centre. “We hope that other communities will be inspired. We would love to be involved in other redevelopment projects too”.
A meeting place for the local community The gastronomy areas on the ground floor have already been renovated and at the start of February, Sebastian Toplitsch was the first tenant to move in. Kathrin Baumgartner explains the agenda behind this. “We are hoping that the gastronomy side will attract people who are impressed by the idea of an open cultural space”. Phase two was recently announced: currently the search is on for people, associations and initiatives wishing to be involved with the building. The local population is being approached to identify their requirements. And after that, additional construction measures may take place on the building. The Gasthof Post should serve as an informal community centre and bring together opposites: whether young or old, local or international, urban or rural – speaking brings people together. The Gasthof Post should be a lively place of communication. <<
The Gasthof Post over time Only the sense of change is consistent – the Gasthof Post has had many different names in the past: first it was called ‘Schätta Gut’, then ‘Rottn’ and after that ‘Bräu’. The farm and its owner Christian Rot were first documented in 1480 when taxes were owed by the agricultural establishment. The building was run as an inn from 1865 by Sebastian Grädl, a descendant of the family from the Gasthof Gradlwirt. In 1893, ownership passed to Johann Fischbacher. During the 1920s, a post office was opened at the ‘Bräuwirt’ and a bus stop was installed right outside the building – it was subsequently renamed as the ‘Gasthof Post’. The penultimate owner of the Gasthof Post was Werner Wäger – the enthusiastic ski touring enthusiast sadly died in an avalanche in 2009. And so his nephew Franz Wäger jun. took over as owner of the Post.

he farm run by the husband of Juliane Bliem has had distilling rights since 1981. The flavour of the fruit from this farm and other Austrian farms can be bottled here. The distilling rights were granted at a time when schnapps distilling was undergoing a rethink. Instead of being solely about intoxication and making use of the fruit, the flavour too needed to be captivating. Juliane Bliem’s parentsin-law used the old varieties growing on the lush trees of the local orchard to give their brandies a special flavour.
An ancient tradition brought back to life
There were already greengages, sour cherries and plums growing around the farm. But when qualified hotel and hospitality assistant Juliane Bliem came to her husband’s farm for the first time, she had no idea that these fruit would end up becoming her passion.
When Juliane Bliem’s parents-in-law decided to give up schnapps distilling, the milk farmer decided to step into their shoes. In doing so, she unknowingly took on an ancient tradition as well as a cherished task. Schnapps distilling was once a woman’s job in Tyrol. In 2009, Juliane Bliem became the first female brandy sommelière. Her passion for experimentation has been invested in the schnapps distilling process ever since. Königsapfel and Falchs Gulderling apples are blended together to form a well-balanced apple brandy while Jakobsbirnen, Mostbirnen and Petersbirnen pears create a multi-facetted pear brandy. “It is almost an addiction to process our fruit in this way”. In the meantime, the rosehip bushes have grown so big that Juliane Bliem now uses the fruit to make a very special brandy. Other brandies are skilfully made using berries growing wild in the local area. >>

Protecting the treasures of her homeland West Austria’s first brandy sommelière focuses on old varieties of fruit which still grow at the farm. She handles them with great care and respect because she is also fascinated by preserving these old varieties in addition to the schnapps-making process. The Petersbirne pear, Jakobsbirne pear and Salvenkirschen cherry are just three of the varieties which she grafts herself in order to preserve their existence. The fruit is harvested when ripe and mashed down with spring water from the Kitzbühel Alps. “It is softer and lower in sodium and that makes a difference to the brandy,” she says, leaving nothing to chance. Once the fermentation tank is closed, it’s time to be patient. Juliane Bliem has to trust that nothing will happen to her precious fruit during the four-week fermentation period. Juliane Bliem uses this time to experiment. Her latest project is the ‘Fine longfighting Gin’ based on her fruit brandies which have a neutral scent after the purifying distillation. She then refines the brandy with lavender, nutmeg, juniper berries and eight additional secret ingredients which are added to the gin.

Summer of Operetta Kufstein at the fortress 02 to 17 August 2019 The historic ambience of Kufstein fortress before the backdrop of the Kaisergebirge. The inspiring music of some of the great operetta classics performed by the stars of the Vienna Volksoper. Kufstein’s Summer of Operetta has been taking place for over 10 years. In 2019, the historic walls will be brought to life by the operetta ‘Die Fledermaus’ by Johann Strauss. This masterpiece as originally performed in Vienna in 1874 and is recognised as one of the classics of musical theatre. The melodies of the operettas ‘Mein Herr Marquis’, ‘Klänge der Heimat’ and ‘Brüderlein and Schwesterlein’ are also timeless and significant. 02. - 17.

Academia Vocalis: Beautiful voices from five continents 16 to 23 August 2019 The Academia Vocalis has been running in Kufsteinerland for three decades. Every August, vocal performers from around the world attend masterclasses in singing, taught and supported by global stars. The styles are refreshingly diverse and range from opera to gospel, pop, jazz, soul and folk music. The finale concerts for the various masterclasses are a real treat for music lovers.
A tradition dating back centuries: Passion Plays in Erl and Thiersee 26 May to 05 October 2019 When it comes to culture and tradition, the Passion Plays in Erl and Thiersee are a real showcase for Kufsteinerland. The Passion Play in Erl dates back 400 years and takes place every six years. 2019 marks that time again! The Passion Play in Thiersee premiered in 1799 and takes place every six years at the Passion Play House on the picturesque banks of the lake. The next performance will be in 2022.
