One of our Temple Terrace treasures is long-time recreation instructor Fran Christakos - Johns.
In the early 1980’s then Parks and Recreation Director Ken Boyd asked Fran to come on board and teach ceramics Since that time Fran has taught generations of Temple Terrace children and countless adults the beauty and artistry of cleaning, coloring, glazing and firing clay
While Fran got her start as a recreation instructor with ceramics, over her four-plus decades of service as an instructor with the city her portfolio grew to include Line Dancing, Zumba, Chair Yoga, Couples Dancing, and several other disciplines Her classes have been held in various locations throughout the city including City Hall, the Public Works Building, the Family Recreation Complex and the Omar K. Lightfoot Center. She has also been a staple at the Temple Terrace Arts and Crafts Festival where she has performed with dance partners, and members of her classes, to entertain the crowds.
She always has given tirelessly of her time and energy to support civic causes and events and continues to impact Temple Terrace citizens and the folks from the surrounding community with her joy, energy, and passion for sharing her talents

PARK SPOTLIGHT
BILTMORE PARK BILTMORE PARK
426 Biltmore Ave
Details are unclear regarding the actual date at which Biltmore Park was established, but some sources list this park as the City’s first park Situated in a neighborhood just blocks from the Hillsborough River, Biltmore Park has been a focal point of the neighborhood for generations Home to the City’s last remaining outdoor basketball court, a modern playground and outdoor exercise equipment This park also offers a sidewalk around the perimeter of the park and ample open green space for free unstructured play. Biltmore Park will continue to provide fun recreational activities for neighborhood families for many more years.
PARK FUN FACT:
Pocket-style parks like Biltmore Park play an important role in Temple Terrace’s park system. Alongside larger destinations such as Riverhills Park and Ben Lomond Park, these smaller neighborhood parks offer convenient, walkable green spaces woven directly into residential areas. This design makes it easy for families, seniors, and kids to enjoy quick access to playgrounds, open lawns, and shady spots without needing to drive. Pocket parks strengthen community connections by giving neighbors a casual place to gather, support physical and mental well-being by bringing nature closer to home, and help reduce crowding at larger parks delivering meaningful benefits in a compact, costefficient footprint
