JCPD academy leaves impact offers a mix of classroom lessons and hands-on scenarios encouraging participants to think critically and work collaboratively, skills that benefit them both inside and outside the program.

The Johnson City Police Department recently welcomed 18 local teens (ages 14-18) to its Junior Police Academy, held July 15–17 at the Police Training Facility. Over the course of three action-packed days, participants got a behindthe-scenes look at life in law enforcement through handson activities and interactive instruction. Led by Investigator Erik Hilton, the program covered a wide range of topics, including criminal investigations, traffic enforcement, crisis negotiation, patrol operations, and special response tactics. Teens even had the chance to learn about K-9 operations and SWAT procedures, gaining real-world insight into the diverse roles within the Department. The Junior Police Academy

“This program is one of the best ways we can build positive relationships with young people in our community while giving them an authentic look at what it means to serve Johnson City,” said JCPD Chief Billy Church. “We want participants to experience what it feels like to be part of a team with a purpose.” Investigator Hilton added, “We structure the JCPD Junior Police Academy to be interactive and exciting. We want teens to walk away with not only a better understanding of law enforcement, but also increased confidence, leadership skills, and a stronger sense of community.” Congratulations to all who participated, and thank you to everyone at JCPD who made the 2025 Junior Police Academy a success!
