State Chairman’s Message

Over the past 100 years, the Order of the Knights of the Southern Cross across Australia have been involved in a variety of projects in service to the Catholic Church. In the early years, their efforts focused on helping Catholics find employment amidst discrimination, working with religious orders to establish agricultural schools for migrant children, and supporting veterans returning from war.

As post-war Australia industrialised and prospered, the Knights shifted their attention to supporting Catholic education and healthcare, particularly for the elderly. With membership growing over the decades, Knights were often called upon to provide fundraising support for seminaries, churches, cathedrals, and various missions that required assistance in some form.

This history of service and generosity is a core element of being a Knight and central to why we remain one of the largest Catholic men’s groups still in existence today.

Unfortunately, the needs of our community have not diminished, despite Australia being one of the strongest economies in the world. Families face a housing affordability and cost of living crisis, which is even more challenging for those with a disability; men’s mental health

remains a significant issue; domestic violence against women continues to plague society; and homelessness and drug use are still prevalent in our neighbourhoods.

I call upon all Knights, and those who feel called to join our Order, to discern whether the Holy Spirit is inviting you to use your gifts and financial resources to help tackle the challenges of today— just as Knights over the decades have responded to their own callings.

Some of you may hesitate, feeling overwhelmed by the demands of raising your families, building your careers, or managing your businesses. Yet, I am hopeful that if you are passionate about answering this call, you will find strength and courage from your fellow Knights, your Parish community, and, above all, our Saviour, for you will be His vessel.

Supreme Knight’s Christmas Message

The 4th Sunday of Advent is a time, we are called to reflect on the virtues of hope, peace, joy and love, which are symbolised by the four candles of the Advent wreath. It is a time of great anticipation and excitement as we all eagerly await the arrival of our Saviour. It is a time of looking inward and of spiritual preparation. It encourages all of us to embrace the spirit of humility, gratitude, and reverence as we await the birth of Jesus.

This Sunday also serves as a call to action, prompting individuals to embody the spirit of love in their interactions with others. This day serves as a reminder to extend love and kindness to those around us, fostering a spirit of unity, compassion and goodwill.

Let us rejoice in the enduring message of love that continues through the ages. Let us continue to light the path for others to follow as we all prepare to welcome the baby Jesus into our hearts and homes. (based on resource: Christian.net, 2024)

Christmas Carols embody these messages of hope, peace, joy and love and on in particular is Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo - O Holy Night / Cantique De Noel (ChristmasVienna 1999) https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=V7uiqRCW6I8 and turn up the volume!

2025 is the Churches Jubilee Year –Pilgrims of Hope

In the Roman Catholic tradition, a Holy Year, or Jubilee, is a great religious

event. It is a journey of people, confident and joyful, moving towards a new destination. ‘Hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit’. Romans 5:5

This Jubilee officially opens on Christmas eve – 24 December at 7.00 pm, with the rite of Opening of the Holy Door of the Papal Basilica of St. Peters. This is one in a lifetime opportunity for us as Knights to participate in this great Church event and Bishop Les Tomlinson and Fr Patrick Toohey brought to our attention some wonderful publications that we can use for our Spiritual Formation program in 2025.

The Holy Innocents

The Holy Innocents did not know Jesus, but they died in his place. December 28 marks the feast of these baby boys who are today, recognised as the first martyrs and pro-life patron Saints. Their story appears in the Gospel of Matthew. Please attend Mass for these first martyrs, the Holy Innocents and as we think of the many babies who are sadly terminated today!

In this Advent season, please remember Confessions and pray for our Priests. May the many blessings of Christmas be with you and your family and may we never forget that the reason for the season is Jesus.

Supreme Knight’s Message

I hope you had a holy, relaxing and healthy Christmas with family and friends.

The Christmas season gives us time to relax and unwind and reflect and contemplate on the year ahead. It is difficult to comprehend that we are 25 years on, since Y2K software crisis. It is a Jubilee Year – Pilgrims of Hope. It is a journey of people, confident and joyful, moving towards a new destination. It is 25 years into this century for our Order of Catholic Knights, a time to look back and move confidently forward to a new destination.

In January, we reflect and identify New Year resolutions and set Goals for the year ahead. As we prepare to plan, some questions that come to mind are – What is God asking of Us? Are we bearing Fruit? Have we done all that is asked of us? Do we waste time? Do the voices of evil whisper away at us? Do we have another year? Who do we give an account to? These and other questions come from ‘The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree’. Luke 13:6.

The Catholic Guy, Bruce Downs explores these and other questions in an insightful way. ‘Are You ready in 2025’? It challenges us, based on our faith. A worthy 40 minute viewing.

https://brucedownes.org/view/ theweekly/tw-ayrit/

We stand on the shoulders of those

who have gone before us, and they had their own challenges. We have an accountability to God, to the Church and to our Faith to foster the Christian Way of Life, to the ends of the Earth, well to the ends of our respective States.

As we strive to offer the gifts of our Time, our Talent and our Treasures in the service of others and the Church and thank God that we live them out individually and as Order members.

I call on all Knights to consider this year as a year of hope and reinvigoration, of challenges faced and conquered, and for our minds to focus on solutions rather than obstacles in our way.

Please remember those in CaliforniaUSA, Nepal and Tibet devasted by fires and earthquakes, and our thought and prayers are with those effected and grant them the spirit of hope, courage and resources to recover and rebuild.

God bless all fellow members of the Order of the Knights of the Southern Cross across Australia and their families. Bless all our activities and inspire us always to work for your greater glory and the salvation of all. May the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. Our daily prayer - Amen. State Chaplain’s Message

Being Bishops’ Men Affirmed

Members attend Installation of Bishop Tim Norton in Broome 4 December 2024

Australian Catholic History was made on 4 December 2024 in Broome, Western Australia when Bishop Tim Norton was installed as the third Bishop of Broome. It was significant that the ceremony was not held in the Broome Cathedral, but at the wall-less school assembly area of St. Mary’s College, Broome at 6.00pm to help cater for the expected crowd.

The vast congregation comprised of an intercultural community of multiple bishops, priests, local and non-local, Aboriginal people and people of every culture and nationality and students at the College. Local bird life raised a cacophony of song as the sun set on a hot and humid evening with the distant roar of motors bikes herd in the distance.

The Order of the Knights of the Southern Cross were represented by local Knight, Tom Gannon, Fr. Patrick Toohey, current State Chaplain and John Walczak, State Executive Officer. Their attendance sent a testimony presence that the Order of the Knights of the Southern Cross stand shoulder to shoulder with the assembled considerable number of gathered Catholic Bishops from all

over Australia. Yes, we Knights remain behind and beside the Catholic Bishops of Australia in advancing the Kingdom of God in Australia, that we Knights call the advancement of Australia.

The ceremony of installation of Bishop Tim Norton had many memorial moments:

• His solo entrance at the beginning to long and loud applause after the assembled Bishops’ prior entrance.

• The presentation of the Papal Bull of Pope Francis first by display by the Papal Nuncio and then read out by two representative people of the Diocese of Broome, Francesca Ishigusha and Jeffrey Hunter.

• Bishop Tim’s personal blessing of his brother bishops with generous water from a decorated coolamon scattered over them by a generous green branch.

• Bishop Tim’s captivating homily about his catalyst transformation by his then parish of gang warfare at their door in Mexico where he worked in the mid-1990s.

• The unique six intercessions proclaimed by six different pairs of spokespersons, Bishop Tim’s

personal response concluding with a prayer. People from each of these six areas of the church led each of these prayers: Catholic communities, Education, Pastoral Ministries, Youth, Leadership and Clergy, last.

• A particular poignant moment came towards the conclusion of the ceremony with Bishop Tim personally blessed collectively by representatives of Aboriginal Communities given in their own language and English. Bishop Tim was immediately in front of them as he bowed fully to them in their close presence. This sent an enormously powerful and clear message about the way Bishop Tim will be a Bishop, as one who serves.

• Bishop Michael Morrissey being profoundly and profusely thanked for his three-plus years in being

the Titular Bishop of the Diocese of Broome in faithful and dedicated service, whilst remaining the Bishop of Geraldton.

We members of the Order of the Knights of the Southern Cross would benefit by having a national perspective about the Catholic Church in Australia, just like the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference. Bishop Tim has much to restore, renew and rebuild in the vast and expansive Diocese of Broome.

Could the Order of the Knights of the Southern Cross somehow contribute in any way to this renewal, even though only a few members of the Knights live there? Put another way, how can the Order make the Jesus-difference to the Diocese of Broome at this crucial time?

Jubilee 25 Pilgrims

“The forthcoming Jubilee can contribute greatly to restoring a climate of hope and trust as a prelude to the renewal and rebirth that we so urgently desire; that is why I have chosen as the motto of the Jubilee, Pilgrims of Hope.” Pope Francis

Pope Francis has proclaimed 2025 as a Jubilee (Holy Year.)

The origins of the Jubilee Year can be found in the Bible where a year of Jubilee was to be undertaken every fifty years, (cf. Leviticus 25: 8-13). It was intended to be a time to re-establish a proper relationship with God, with one another, and with the whole of creation, and involved the forgiveness of debts, the return of misappropriated land, and a fallow period in the fields.

In 1300, the Church started the tradition of a Jubilee (Holy Year) every 50 years, which in time became every 25 years. Holy Years have also been held at other times to mark special moments in the story of Christianity and special themes.

As Pope Francis has noted: “The Jubilee has always been an event of great spiritual, ecclesial, and social significance in the life of the Church… God’s holy and faithful people has experienced this celebration as a special gift of grace, characterised

by the forgiveness of sins and in particular by the indulgence, which is an expression of the mercy of God. The faithful, frequently at the conclusion of a lengthy pilgrimage, draw from the spiritual treasury of the Church by passing through the Holy Door and venerating the relics of the Apostles Peter and Paul preserved in Roman basilicas.”

Besides events in Rome, during the Jubilee Year, dioceses throughout the world will conduct liturgies and events to enable all the faithful to celebrate the Jubilee with deep faith, lively hope, and active charity.

The Jubilee 2025 logo shows four stylised figures, representing all of humanity, coming from the four corners of the earth. They embrace each other to indicate the solidarity and fraternity which should unite all peoples. The figure at the front is holding onto the cross. It is not only the sign of the faith, which this lead figure embraces, but also of hope, which can never be abandoned, because we are always in need of hope, especially in our moments of greatest need.

There are rough waves under the figures, symbolising the fact that life’s pilgrimage does not always go smoothly in calm waters. That’s why we should pay special attention to the lower part of the cross which has been elongated

and turned into the shape of an anchor which is let down into the waves. The anchor is well known as a symbol of hope and stability in life’s storms.

The image illustrates the pilgrim’s journey, not as an individual undertaking, but rather as something communal, marked by an increasing dynamism leading one ever close to the cross. The cross in the logo is dynamic. It bends down towards humanity, not leaving human beings alone, but stretching out to them to offer the certainty of its presence and the security of hope. At the bottom of the logo is the motto of the 2025 Jubilee Year, “Pilgrims of Hope”, represented in green, the colour of hope.

Southern Cross Care (WA) Inc.

2025 is promising to be a year of growth and reform for the aged care sector.

The Australian Government is introducing a new Aged Care Act to strengthen Australia’s aged care system. The new Act, a once-in-ageneration reform of the sector, was passed through the Commonwealth Parliament in November last year and is expected to commence in July 2025. The new Act is focused on creating a simpler, safer aged care system, with strengthened regulatory powers and quality standards, and more choice and control for residents.

One of the more significant changes is the introduction of the Support At Home program, designed to streamline funding and provision of home care services. Southern Cross Care (WA) is reviewing our systems and structure to ensure we are ready for the changes and can best service our clients.

‘People Are Vitally Important’ remains a strategic focus for the year. We are continuing to embed our new People Strategy with a range of initiatives to ensure Southern Cross Care (WA) is an employer of choice and a great place to work. The onboarding experience for new employees has been improved and a new recognition platform, Celebrating Extraordinary, has been implemented to recognise those employees who are doing extraordinary work.

We are now in the second year of the Emerging Leaders Program to foster our next generation of leaders. Our annual ‘Your Say’ employee survey delivered another significant year on year increase in engagement scores. This upward trend is demonstration of our dedication to our people and building a culture where our people feel cared for, supported and valued.

We are very excited to be rebranding this year, creating a bold and ownable brand that pays respect to our heritage while preparing us for growth into the future. We look forward to showcasing our new brand when it launches at the end of April.

Looking ahead, we are filled with optimism as together we continue to help people live extraordinary lives, every day, connected to communities.

Inspired

I was speaking to an elderly woman the other day. I asked her, “Looking back over your long life, who has inspired you?” She thought about it for a moment, and then said, rather surprisingly: “No one!”

Could that be right? Through an entire life there was no one who inspired her to be something more, to aim higher or to achieve something beyond what she already had accomplished? I went away, pondering my own question. So, who has inspired you, I thought?

I cannot deny that the figure and stature of Jesus continues to unsettle me and reshape me. His perspective and presentation, with its long view and edgy contemporaneity will forever keep me grounded and thinking deeply.

Certain writers of books have also inspired in their own way. They draw you into their world and they teach in the most natural way imaginable. So I would have to say that writers like Alan Paton, John Stott, Eugene Petersen, Philip Yancey and Jordan Peterson would have to feature on my list.

Then there were the people with whom I have spent time. No, not any celebrities or social media influencers. I’m not sure they have ever offered me anything of substance. I’m talking about down-to-earth folk who have taken hold of life nobly and selflessly.

John (not his real name) is one of those. I taught with him in a tertiary setting which gave me occasion to observe his way with the deep truths of life and his inimitable teaching style. He would provoke at the same time he made sure that people knew he cared about them. He would upset crusty conventions that kept people comfortable and stale, and he would incense both conservatives and liberals alike who were desperate for his endorsement. He was quick to say sorry and he always kept his fallibility transparent.

And when my wife was ill, he helped us pay for the obscenely expensive medication that was beyond our reach. He did so without fanfare and expectation. His selfless generosity seemed to issue from a belief that money should be used to bless rather than to be hoarded. He is not rich, not in this world’s goods anyway, but I suspect there is a wealth about him that is of a different order.

I count him as one of my few friends and someone who inspires me to seek that which is eternal and often countercultural.

As you join me in launching into this new year, who inspires you, I wonder? And why?

State Executive Officer’s Message

As we embrace 2025, I extend my warmest blessings to you and your families. This year carries particular significance as we celebrate the Jubilee Year, a sacred time of renewal, forgiveness, and spiritual growth in our Catholic faith. It is an invitation to draw closer to God and to reflect on our commitment to living holy lives.

A key highlight of this Jubilee Year is the opportunity to gain a Plenary Indulgence. As you may know, this spiritual grace is a powerful means of seeking God’s mercy and sharing it with others. To obtain a Plenary Indulgence, one must fulfill the usual conditions: sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion, and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father. Additionally, participating in a Jubilee pilgrimage or designated holy activity is required.

For our sick or immobile members, the Church offers alternative ways to receive this grace. By uniting your sufferings to Christ’s passion and participating in a spiritual pilgrimage through prayer, you, too, can experience the profound benefits of the Jubilee. I encourage all of you to explore these opportunities and share this information with others in your community.

As we consider our spiritual journeys, the start of a new year provides a wonderful chance to set resolutions that lead us closer to holiness.

Traditional practices, such as attending daily Mass, praying the Rosary, and frequenting the Sacrament of Reconciliation, remain timeless aids in growing in faith. Modern approaches, including digital prayer apps such as “Laudate,” “Hallow,” and “iBreviary,” or “Universalis” as well as engaging with online faith communities, and volunteering - for your Parish, local charity or Knights Branch, also provide meaningful ways to integrate holiness into our daily lives. Choose the methods that resonate most with you and strive to deepen your relationship with God throughout the year.

I am also pleased to share that we are nearing the launch of our muchanticipated History Book. This project celebrates the legacy of the Knights in Western Australia and will be officially announced in the coming months. It is a testament to the dedication and faithfulness of our members, past and present, and serves as a reminder of the incredible work we do as an organisation.

In closing, I wish to thank each of you for your prayers and ongoing support. Let us make 2025 a year of grace, growth, and holiness.

Yours in Christ

2024 Annual General Meeting

Once again, the Order’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held with the greatly appreciated generosity of Catholic Education Western Australia in providing their facilities gratis for our use on Saturday 26 October 2024.

Mass was the first item on the agenda and celebrated by our State Chaplain, Father Patrick Toohey. The serene St Michael the Archangel Chapel always provides a great setting to reflect on Mass and the sermon.

After Mass, a short time was allocated for attendees to move to Nestor Hall, sign attendance register and have a refreshment break before the meeting commenced.

State Chairman, Kevin Clark opened the meeting by welcoming and thanking attendees for giving up their Saturday to attend the AGM. After that, the formalities and requirements of the AGM were dealt with including some technical challenges experienced by Bro Tony Borromei. The items covered went well including the passing of a Special Resolution to amend our Constitution to allow Members to simultaneously sit on more than one Board. Bros Paul Celenza and Geoff McKebery were elected as State Councillors and Bro Tristan Kolay re-elected for the next four years commencing 2025.

State Chairman thanked Bro Borromei as his term on State Council and as

State Secretary conclude at the end of this year. The Duty of Discretion and final Prayers were recited by all, and the AGM was declared closed.

Presentations from, Knights of the Southern Cross Education Foundation, KSC Charitable Fund, Southern Cross Care, Knicross Enterprises Pty Ltd and State Executive Officer presentations were made to inform all on what has occurred in their relative identities throughout the past year. All were greatly appreciated and thanked for their effort and time to do the presentations. Bro Brad Prentice KoH, Chairman of SCC announced he was stepping down from the position and this was his last presentation to the Order. A standing ovation was awarded to him for his many years of dedicated service to SCC.

A Conversation with Nick Marvin

On 23 October 2024, the Knight’s Consultor Branch held an inaugural high-level dinner for business leaders, in partnership with the law firm Lavan in Perth City.

This event was an opportunity for not only Knights, but members of the law firm and other special invited business leaders to partake in the Order’s core values of faith and fraternity. Present were the State Chairman, Kevin Clarke and the State Executive Officer, John Walczak. Other State Councillors were also present along with members of Knights Consultor.

The evening began in a relaxed, afterwork setting with drinks and canapes, giving ample time for attendees to mingle and get to know one another, and share their commonalities.

The main event was hosted by Basil Musca and Odhran O’Brien and included a short history and presentation about Lavan Legal by one of the partners of the Law firm, Mr. Alex Biddulph. Mr Biddulph touched on the Catholic roots of the firm that has over 125-year history representing Western Australians as well as the firm’s longstanding connection with the Order.

The keynote speaker was Mr. Nick Marvin who currently runs a recruitment firm, Marvin HR. Mr. Marvin spoke about how Christian values impact team and organisational

success, particularly leading by example and from the front. Highlighting the importance of human connection between the manager and the players, inspiring self-belief and identifying and nurturing talents which has led to his great successes in the Perth Wildcats, Perth Lynx, Perth IX and Western Force. Particularly in building up the Wildcats from an organisation that sustained losses and almost a decade without a championship to its most successful era - winning four national championships in eight years whilst posting consecutive profits and sold-out arenas. Mr. Marvin attributed much of his successes in the professional clubs he has managed to his own formation and the application of faith to his work and projects. Which are particularly in line with the Order’s Mission Statement “Leading the laity in a spirit of service inspired by the Gospel”.

An evening thoroughly enjoyed by all deserves special thanks to volunteers Liam Kessel and …. As well as the caterers and of course Lavan.

Branch Executive Training

On 6 November 2024, newly appointed Branch executives from WillettonBateman, Glendalough, Cathedral, and Belmont came together and shared knowledge, wisdom, history and traditions on the establishment and running of Branches.

Experiences, questions and later resources were shared between attendees and esteemed trainers: Brothers John Dwyer, Tony Borromei KoH, Mike Davila, Tristan Kolay as well

as informally Basil Musca.

Feedback from the training was positive including comments on the networking value as well as Branch Wardens and Secretaries, appreciating the scope of their roles.

A well-received gem of advice from past Branch Chairman Mike Davila regarding steering the vision and direction of the Branch: ‘Make it yours.’

The Knights of the Meat Table: Fellowship, Feasts, and Fraternity

Among the many gatherings of the Knights of the Southern Cross WA, few are as eagerly anticipated as the feasts hosted by the Knights of the Meat Table. This special tradition brings together like-minded men to share not only a hearty meal but also the camaraderie and fellowship that are at the heart of the order.

At the centre of this culinary brotherhood is Bro. Mike Davilla whose passion for smoked meats and American BBQ is unsurpassed. Known for his slow-smoked brisket and perfectly tender ribs, Mike’s skills on the smoker are legendary. At the most recent gathering, he delighted attendees with succulent pork and beef ribs, accompanied by a rich sweet potato mash and a crisp, tangy coleslaw—a true Southern feast.

These events, held a few times a year, provide members of the Knights with a much-needed opportunity to step away from the demands of daily life and connect over a shared love of great food and fraternity. The combination of Mike’s culinary mastery and the convivial atmosphere creates an environment where stories are shared, bonds are strengthened, and the values of the Knights are lived out in a tangible way.

The Knights of the Meat Table remind us that fellowship isn’t just about formal meetings—it’s about the simple joy of gathering around a table, sharing a meal, and walking together in faith and friendship.

Christ the King Youth Festival 2024

The Christ the King Youth Festival brought a joyful close to the liturgical year. Held at St Mary’s Cathedral, the event, organised by Catholic Youth Ministry (CYM), attracted young Catholics and families from across Perth to celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King.

The festival began with the beautiful 5.00 pm Mass in the Cathedral. The atmosphere was reverent yet welcoming, with a strong sense of unity among the diverse congregation. The service set the tone for the evening, reminding attendees of Christ’s role as the centre of their faith and lives.

As the Mass concluded, the Cathedral forecourt was transformed into a bustling festival site filled with live music, food trucks, and interactive activities. The joyful melodies of local Catholic artists filled the air, while the enticing aroma of freshly prepared dishes drew festivalgoers to the food stalls. Families, youth groups, and parishioners of all ages mingled, enjoying the festive yet reflective spirit of the event.

One of the highlights of the festival was the Expo Zone, where Catholic organisations shared their missions and showcased opportunities for involvement. The Expo offered a glimpse into the dynamic and diverse ways the Church is active in the community. It was a space of inspiration

and connection, encouraging attendees to engage more deeply with their faith.

The Order of the Knights of the Southern Cross were honoured to support the event, with members from various branches volunteering as marshals to help ensure the evening ran smoothly. Their quiet dedication behind the scenes was a testament to the values of service and fellowship that the Knights strive to embody.

As the evening ended, the Festival stood as a shining example of the strength and vibrancy of Perth’s Catholic community. It demonstrated how faith, when shared and celebrated, can foster connection and joy in profound ways.

Reflecting on the day, I am deeply proud of who we are as Knights and what we stand for. Through our service and unity, we continue to uphold the ideals of faith, charity, and community that define our order. May God bless all our brothers who volunteered their time and effort, as well as those who prayed for the success of the Festival. May we remain steadfast in our mission and continue to glorify God in all that we do.

Loving for Life

Making time the Catholic way

The call came quite late in the year: a request to present a Catholic talk on Sexting to the whole cohort of Year 7, 8 and 9 students in a Catholic high school in two weeks’ time. My first instinct was to say no. After all, we had just sent off our final school report and were winding down for the year. Our minds were turning towards family and the preparations for Christmas.

Then a fleeting memory came to me, of reading a story to a grandson the night before, of Samuel being called by God. What did Eli say to Samuel? “If he calls you, say ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening’” (1 Samuel 3:9). I had also been meditating recently on Mary’s words at the wedding of Cana “Do whatever He tells you”. I knew I was sunk. I am not so presumptuous as to believe that God was directly talking to me, but… I do believe in the promptings of the Holy Spirit, which this time was through a request from a teacher.

This was not a talk we had presented before, and I knew it would need many hours to produce a professional product, but I firmly believe that if God wishes us to do a task, he equips and prepares us to effectively do so. He will use every aspect of who we are to help us surmount our inadequacies and trepidations.

“When the time is right, I, THE LORD, will make it happen.” Isaiah 60:22

After this mad thought had entered my mind, I hesitated a little. After all, I didn’t want to overburden our team of tired facilitators. Despite this, each facilitator readily said yes. Such generosity of spirit! We set our noses to the grindstone.

Our preliminary research indicated that sexting was a growing problem among teenagers, not just in Australia, but worldwide. It was resulting in psychological distress to those who were tricked or pressured into sending ‘nudes’, sometimes resulting in the tragedy of suicide.

We also researched current Western Australian laws regarding sexting. It is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to take, keep or forward indecent pictures of themselves or others, even if both young people involved give permission. This can result in a conviction and criminal record. Most young people do not know this and are not aware of the implications of having a conviction to their future career possibilities, and even where they could be allowed to live.

However, of more importance for us than the laws, was to enlighten students on the personal consequences to those involved, and the Church’s teaching on the dignity of the human person. These

young people are worth so much more than what the world offers them. We wanted them to value themselves and others as whole people, just as God does.

We then spent some hours researching and creating videos, interactive activities and an engaging PowerPoint to keep the student’s attention in the last week of their school year. As a result, the talks were successful. The students were attentive, and the staff were pleased. This means we now have a fully prepared talk on sexting to offer to other high schools in 2025.

Now it was time to rest, to ‘refill our well’, so that each of us could be the person God intended us to be. We turned our minds to Christmas with our families, the joy of celebrating the birth of Christ, and to slowing down over summer.

We live in a world dominated by cyberspace, that imposes on our thoughts and consumes our attention. How can we all counteract this? By using this time to interact with each other in real and meaningful ways, to nurture good relationships with our children and grandchildren. Let us all enjoy those irreplaceable wonder-filled moments that draw family together, the real experiences that will affirm and assist our young people to navigate life.

International Alliance of Catholic Knights

In October 2024, the Alliance celebrated its 45th anniversary since it was formed by six Orders of Catholic Knights.

Formation and development

The International Alliance of Catholic Knights was founded in Glasgow, Scotland, on 12 October 1979 at a meeting of the leaders of kindred Orders of Catholic Knights, convened on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee of the Knights of Saint Columba. The Orders represented were the Knights of Columbus, Knights of Saint Columbanus, Knights of the Southern Cross Australia, Knights of the Southern Cross New Zealand and the Knights of Saint Columba.

This meeting resolved that these Fraternal Orders would establish an International Alliance for the purpose of working together for the mutual advantage of the individual Member Orders and the extension of Catholic Knighthood throughout the world. It was agreed the Supreme Knight or National President of each Member Order would form an International Council which would meet annually and be responsible for the organisation and development of the new Alliance.

The Leaders present at this historic gathering are recognised as the Founders of the International Alliance of Catholic Knights and they were:

• Supreme Knight, Tony Rouse,Knights of Saint Columba, President

Supreme Knight, Virgil C. Dechant, Knights of Columbus

The development and work of the member Orders of Catholic Knights is fulfillment of the vision of the Rev Father Michael J McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus. OBITUARIES

Vale - Brother Edward (Eddie)

8 November 1937 – 26 August 2024

Brother Eddie was nominated by his brothers Domenic and Victor in 1962. He was assigned to Branch No. 36, Pier Street and was never attached to another Branch. He always remained a loyal, supportive and financial member but never served in an executive position.

Eddie’s parents migrated to Perth in 1926 and was the youngest of three boys. He was born in a small hospital in Newcastle Street, Leederville. He had a couple of medical issues early in his life, one of them was a severely scalded arm when he pulled a pot of boiling water off the stove. He was educated at Mundaring Primary School and Midland Junction High School.

His father passed away in 1950 when Eddie was just 13 years old. He began work at Burridge & Warren, but an Order member assisted him to get a job with the Wool Company in 1958. He then moved to and remained with

BP until his early retirement at the age of 48 in 1985.

He played cricket and was chosen in the WA Country XI in 1962 against the touring English Test team. As opening batsman, he was dismissed for one run by one of the great bowlers of that era – Freddie Truman. Eddie captained the Parkerville Cricket Club to six consecutive Premierships and was made a Life Member. He later served as Secretary of the Parkerville Recreation Ground Committee for 22 years and was nominated for Shire Citizen of the Year.

Eddie was very active in the Mundaring Parish and was their banker for 25 years. His Architect brother designed the Presbytery and an extension to the school. In honour there is a Mucciarone Library Resource Centre.

He travelled every year with several visits to Europe/Italy and frequently to Singapore where he made a lifetime friend. In his travels, he never visited Rottnest Island as he thought it would be a let down after visiting the Isle of Capri.

In 1998, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and in 2014 he had both hips replaced and a pacemaker inserted – boasting that he was now a bionic man.

Eddie never married and was the primary carer for his mother who lived to the age of 97. He was the remaining family member of his generation.

Eddie couldn’t care for himself in the last few years, but neighbours, family and friends provided all the meals, care and companionship he could wish for.

May he rest in peace.

Vale - Brother

Joseph Leonard Martin 30 May 1936 - 19 September 2024

Joseph was admitted into the Order in the Kalgoorlie Branch in 1960. He served as Branch Deputy Chairman and Branch Captain of the Guard. He received the 40-year Service Medal, 50year Certificate and Branch Councillor Honour Medal for his valued service to the Order.

He was one of five children and for his secondary education he was a boarder at St Idlehoods College, New Norcia. After achieving a Bachelor of Education, he joined the Education Department in 1955. First appointed to Boulder Central School then promoted to Headmaster at Grass Patch in 1966. Further promotions saw him serve at many other schools located from the southwest to the northwest of the State as well as in the metropolitan area. On retiring in 2000 he was awarded Principal of the Year.

Joseph married Grace and they raised three children. Together they travelled to Europe, New Zealand and Canada. He enjoyed attending horse racing and trotting meetings.

After retirement he was invited by the Education Department to moderate home education programmes.

He served as an Acolyte at St Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Floreat.

May he rest in peace.

Vale - Brother

Patrick (Pat) Francis Gaffney 29 June 1942 - 11 December 2024

Bro Pat joined the Order in 1998 and was placed with the Knights Consultor Branch No. 999. He was awarded the 10 Year service pin in 2008.

Pat was born and raised in Longford in Ireland, into a family that loved food, football (soccer) and a sense of community. He spent many hours with son Franklin at Croke Park when living in Dublin and when they migrated to Australia; later Dara joined them to watch Australian Rules football at Perth, Fremantle and Subiaco ovals to

OBITUARIES

follow the Dockers hoping they would win a premiership.

He was a loving husband, an affectionate and caring father, and a cheeky grandfather to Dara, Greta, and Ingrid. He could work a room like the best, leaving every occasion knowing the names and interesting details about all the people he met.

Pat was defined as a man with kindness, a kind heart and infectious humour –sometimes annoying and embarrassing – though he had a way of making everyone around him feel at ease and important.

The family will remember him as a selflessness, generous father helping those less fortunate. He made many quiet visits to homes of those in need around Dun Laoghaire delivering bags of coal ensuring they had sufficient fuel through the cold winter nights. They will also remember the following “May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind always be at your back, and may the sunshine warm upon your face.”

Patrick is now reunited in heaven with his beloved wife Phyllis who passed in 2018.

May he rest in peace.

Don’t miss out on the little moments.

We believe the little moments are as important as the momentous ones. We take care of every last detail of your loved ones funeral, so you can focus on remembering the little things. Because the little things are everything.
