Message from the Headteacher Dear Parents / Carers, It has been a really positive week here in school. The students have been fantastic and really continuing to engage and enjoying being in school. We have all enjoyed our first ‘whole school’ remote assembly, a very personal remembrance tribute led by Ms Preston, Mrs Cain and Mr Cocker. I had the privilege of touring the school during the assembly and it was fabulous to hear the assembly being shown in every classroom and to observe the whole school respect the 2-minute silence. Given there are 1500+ people on the school site, you could have heard a pin drop. It was very moving and a wonderful community experience.

I am also happy to announce that our excellent Student Voice team met for the first time this week. The session was led virtually, and include at least two representatives from each year group. The team discussed fundraising for the year, organising mental health support across the school and reviewing our plastic policy. We really look forward to them being involved in decision making across the school over the coming year. More information on the Student Voice Team is included later on in this bulletin.

We are delighted to be able to tell you that the complete refurbishment of the entire Science block is now complete. It looks amazing and I cannot wait to be able to invite you back into school so that you can see the new science facilities. This work began before the summer holiday and has included completely new layouts, desks, chairs, equipment, windows, floors and ceilings. We have now created a very modern, state of the art learning space, which will further facilitate outstanding science teaching for the future. We now have a dedicated sixth form laboratory for A Level, which will support their practical endorsement. We have included some photos further on in this bulletin of our new science rooms.

Now that we have this area of the school returned to us, it has enabled us to be able to further enhance our Covid safety measures by ensuring all Key Stage 3 classes remain

static in one room, except when they have PE lessons. All of our current safety measures can be seen here. Year 7, 8 and 9 students will also benefit from the additional pastoral opportunities that being based in one room offers. We hope the additional stability helps to support both staff and student wellbeing. Students and their Academic Mentors will be able to take ownership of the space and create their own place to celebrate class achievements. Subject tutors can also use the space for visual teaching aids and students will have a base to store some belongings that in previous times may have been in lockers around the school site. We will ensure every Key Stage 3 base has a dedicated notice board. We must prioritise the rooming of exam groups (GCSE/ A level) during this period and as such we want to allow as much use of specialist rooms as possible. This is one of the reasons that we have made the students in Years 7 to 9 as static as possible to further reduce the risk of transmission but allow more flexibility within our GCSE /A level groupings and allow access to specialist rooms. GCSE Science classes will continue to have practical demonstrations or simulations in line with Ofquals decision about the 2021 exam series, which do not have to take place in Science laboratories, which will currently be used as a base for Year 7. We also now have a dedicated sixth form laboratory for A Level Sciences, which will now further support their practical endorsements. Last night saw the launch of our Virtual Sixth Form Open Evening. Please use the link below to see our presentation and for further information. Have a good weekend and stay safe, Sharon Jenner Headteacher

Our Sixth Form Virtual Open Evening is now Live on our school website. This will provide all the information that our prospective Sixth Form Students will need to make us the right choice for their KS5 Education and offer an amazing and detailed perspective of our school. Should you have any follow up questions or comments, then please direct them to our Director of Sixth Form - Mr Matthew Fletcher at Mfletcher@rodingvalley.net

Remembrance Day at RVHS This Wednesday we commemorated Remembrance Day with a whole school virtual assembly. Ms Cain, Ms Preston and Mr Cocker led the assembly with accounts of their own relative’s experiences of the First World War and how life changed for them and their families when the war ended. The students conduct and the respect they showed was inspiring. Many students commented that they had used the two-minute silence to reflect on what they had heard or how they would try to show the same selflessness in their own lives.

Congratulations to Katy for her amazing work on the transport of oxygen by haemoglobin! Miss Hodges was blown away!

Well done to Skye in Year 10, for going all out on her fantastic Halloween costume of a Cassowary. Mr Baidoo was seriously impressed by this 3D Artwork!

Our New Science Block Our new Science rooms look amazing with new benches, windows, ceilings and floors. The state of the art facilities in Science will enable more students to have access to the lab facilities and develop a love of learning in Science.

Hello everyone, Just wanted to draw all parents' attention to a series of short videos that I have made to support you with Google Classroom - our platform that allows us to set, record and give feedback on Home Learning. FAQS on Google Classroom

Using Google Drive

Google Classroom Assignments vs Lesson Material

I also wanted to take this opportunity to alert parents to a Home Learning Support Club that will be starting over the next few weeks. Each year group will be offered a 30-45 minute support club, at the end of each school day, where students can access computers and printers to complete their work. This club will be run by one of our teachers or Learning Support Assistants. I will be in touch with all parents to give more details as soon as we can launch it. Please do take a look at some of the FANTASTIC home learning pieces that are featured in this bulletin. Also, please do not forget to email me directly - plarkin@rodingvalley.net if you need any help or support with home learning.

Literacy at Home Challenge: Write a letter to your local MP, expressing your view about a community issue that interest you. Some examples could be: Homelessness Global Warming Road Safety

Vigilant

Tips for Writing Content for Your Letter to Your MP Research your MP - By checking www.theyworkforyou.com/ you can find out if your MP shares your concerns. If they do, don't forget to thank the MP for previous work they have done in the area. MPs are rarely thanked by their constituents and a thank you goes a long way.

Definition: Keeping careful watch for possible danger or difficulties

Be personal - By linking your concerns to real examples you will engage the reader and help them to sympathise with your concerns.

Be succinct - Try to limit yourself to no more than one-two pages of A4. MPs receive numerous letters every week. Provide solutions - A letter to your MP is not just a chance to educate them about an issue, it's a chance to propose solutions as well. If you have a sensible plan of action, laid out in a clear way, they are more likely to support it.

Congratulations to our Star writers of the Week!

Accelerated Reader With Mr A Jones Hi Year 7, and welcome back to a new half term. Our competitions are well and truly underway, and the results for the first competition are in! Well done to our winner, Eylul Ugur, for getting 100% pass rate on the most amount of books over the last two weeks. That is an incredible achievement. Our new competition is now up and running – High Score. Your aim is to read as many words as possible from now until Sunday 22nd November. You have two weeks to try and get to the top of the leader board. Remember to quiz your book when you have finished reading it though, as the only way to earn words is to pass your quiz. Good luck, Year 7!

Here is how the leader board stands so far for the new competition. Who will be the winner? It’s very close at the top, and we still have over a week to go! Keep quizzing and see if YOU can get to the top!

Year 8 Welcome back to Half Term 2. We have hit the ground running, and settled back into this half term brilliantly after our extended break. We remain in the same zone, and have the same start and finish times. Please ensure your child arrives at school by no later than 8.30am. This week, you should have received a copy of your child’s Autumn Report, which identifies their 'Attitude to Learning' rank for all of their subjects. This rank is purely based on their attitude in that subject, not their ability. If they have been ranked as a 3 or 4 for a particular subject, this means that they aren't at times, working to the best of their ability in that subject, and at times can display the wrong attitude or make the wrong behavioural choices. Please do direct any concerns around these ATL rankings to the subject teachers in the first instance. They should quickly be able to clarify why they awarded that rank. Please can you ensure that your child attends school with a face covering at all times. If they arrive without a face covering, they will need to purchase one from Student Reception at a cost of £1. This will be charged to your ParentPay account. They will also be issued with a sanction of a Friday after school detention for 20 minutes. This is an imperative measure in ensuring the safety of all staff and students in our school and community. I have just this week, sent out information about our exciting Sports Tour for 2022. We are running a Netball & Football tour of South Africa. This is a once in a lifetime trip for our students and presents excellent opportunities for gaining skills which cannot be taught in the classroom. Please direct any questions relating to this exciting tour to myself at cedwards@rodingvalley.net . I have included some Important Dates for your diary:

Think Investment Work Experience Programme During half term, our Year 13 students were given the opportunity to take part in the Think Investment Programme delivered by Investment2020. Our students met six firms (Fidelity, Willis Towers Watson, Columbia Threadneedle, M&G, LGIM and Schroders) and over 30 people working in the sector. They had expert insight into hot industry topics including ESG, regulation, asset classes, and gained support on the full recruitment process including having a go at online psychometric tests. They also heard about apprenticeship opportunities at the firms and learnt how to structure their CV and prepare for interviews.

Virtual Open Day New City College is following the guidance and advice from the Government and Public Health England. Due to the November lockdown in England, we are unable to hold an onsite open day this month. We have however organised another Online Open Day! This will happen on 21st November 2020, from 10.00am - 2.00pm. Students will be able to join live tutor talks to find out about their course of interest, view 360° tours of our campuses, listen to recorded interviews with students and ask any burning questions through a live chat with our friendly staff. Whilst nothing beats visiting us in person, our Online Open Day is as close as it gets to the real thing! Please encourage your students to join us. Sign up for the Online Open Day here.

Students who wish to submit an application can do so via our website. If there are any further queries regarding applications, they can contact a member of our Customer Services Team at info@ncclondon.ac.uk or call us on 0330 135 8000.

All other absences not related to Covid-19 will be recorded in the normal way (Please refer to our Attendance Policy here for further information on attendance codes etc.).

1

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

2

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

3

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

4 5

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support. Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.

Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
