As we approach the final week of this first half-term of the new academic year, I would like to take time to reflect on the past 7 weeks, and look forward to what is to come when we return after half-term. The start to the academic year has been dominated by the issue of RAAC and the impact it has had on our school community. We know the negative impact of children not being in school, directly in front of their teachers. Our staff have felt this as well, and although they have done incredible work to ensure high quality online learning, they too are desperate for all students to return. At the beginning of this week we were delighted to open phase 1 of the new building - which includes 9 new classrooms, an area for sixth form students to study independently and a new toilet block. We are also in the process of adding extra covered seating for our students on the deck of the new building. Phases 2 and 3 are still on schedule to be completed next week, meaning that we will be able to welcome every student back into school on Monday 30th October at 8.30am. A reminder that next Friday is an INSET day so the last day of the half-term for students is Thursday 19th October, and that we return, as already mentioned, on Monday 30th October. In the last bulletin I talked about our Open Morning Season where we opened our doors to prospective Year 6 students and their families. Thank you to all of our wonderful students who contributed so well to these, and of course our staff who planned meticulously to ensure that we gave our visitors a taste of what life is like at Roding Valley. Well over a thousand people visited our school this year which is truly remarkable, and further supports our vision to become the school of choice in our community.
.
I want to wish our Year 11 students well for their non-public exams when they return to school after half-term, a healthy balance of revision and rest is needed to ensure that they are raring to go upon their return. They have worked so hard already this year, and this is an excellent opportunity for them to showcase this and receive some helpful feedback as well. Unfortunately, recent benefit changes mean that some families will no longer receive additional support over half term when their children are at home needing three meals a day. If you are affected by this, then Epping Forest Food Bank can help. They can provide emergency food parcels. These contain enough food for three meals a day, plus snacks, for everyone in the family, for three days. If you would like to access this service, please contact your YPL as referrals can be made through the school. If you are lucky enough to have some time off over half-term, I wish you a restful break and look forward to seeing every student when we return after half-term. Kind regards Mr Charlton Headteacher

Year 8 News Message from Miss Reed It is crazy to think we are approaching the end of the first half term in Y8 which I know has been a little disruptive for us all due to RAAC. However, after the Half Term break, everything will return back to normal which is fantastic. Year 8 students have continued their positive and hardworking attitude this term which I am extremely pleased to see. A reminder that our expectations of uniform and equipment is also very high. Students should be wearing the correct uniform to school. If your son/daughter is required to wear trainers, please provide them with a note. I would like to thank all of the Year 8 students who joined us for the Open morning last Saturday and helped with subject areas. They were a credit to themselves and the school.

LOST PROPERTY To report any property lost, please email: lostproperty@rodingvalley.net We ask if you could provide a detailed description of the item you have lost so that we can reunite you with your missing property.
Year 9 News Message from Mr Ryan I can't believe how quickly the half term has gone, there is only one week until half term and a much-needed rest. I have been incredibly impressed with the way the students have behaved in relation to the changes in P.E. and the fact that we have had to learn from home. I would like to point out that students should not be wearing trainers on their PE days, they need to be in their shoes. Open Morning was a great success and it was lovely to see how many Year 9 students got involved. I was very impressed with Mia O'Halloran, Cerys Clark, Lea Horakova and Emmie Carr who were demonstrating their trampolining skills.
BEDROCK
I would like to remind you about the importance of Sparx Maths and Bedrock. Work is set for both of these every week. Whereas Bedrock aims to improve the vocabulary of our students Sparx links directly to the maths that is being taught. Only 42% of the year group completed their Sparx maths. Please could I ask you to encourage your child to complete the work that is set.
Medication Reminder This is a reminder to Parent/Carers of students that require the school to hold spare medication. It is the parent/carers responsibility to ensure that the school is provided with up to date medication. If you are unsure of the expiry date of your child's medication please email sgladman@rodingvalley.net who will be able to advise you. Many Thanks
Year 10 News Message from Mrs Wills As we draw to the close of a busy first half term I want to celebrate the positive start that Year 10 have had. In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website. It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net
Year 11 News Message from Miss Pinches We are very close to the end of our first half-term of Year 11, and what a busy time it has been! Our geography students took a field trip to Stratford this week as part of the GCSE curriculum and it was amazing to see so many students engaging with this in such a mature way. Mr Cocker was full of praise for our cohort and their attitudes this week- great work! With the next exam cycle coming up after half-term break, I wanted to again remind students and parents of a few key places where they can find support: 1. Our GCSE microsite, linked here, is active and updated with all the resources your child needs to prepare for their PPE’s. It is a one-stop shop for everything they require to plan their study timetable, resources for revision and our revision techniques. 2. For those parents who were unable to earlier this half-term, please find the link to Year 11 Information evening here. This session is full of key information from our Senior staff about the upcoming year and support in place for Year 11 students. 3. Google classroom is a fountain of resources for our students. Please ensure you are encouraging your child to be on top of their homework, but to also access resources shared there. 4. Bedrock learning is a wonderful tool for students extending their vocabulary and subject specific knowledge. Bedrock mapper is a key resource for subject terminology in the lead up to exams. Our next exam cycle will start on Monday 30th October and run for 2 weeks. As I am sure you are aware, these are very important examinations for the school and the students. It is essential, therefore, that students prepare thoroughly and do the very best they can. The results of these exams will provide useful indicators as to the current performance of Year 11 students and enable the school to assess how well students are doing against the GCSE target grades. They will also provide students with experience of examinations which will be of value to them when they come to prepare for and sit the real examinations in the summer. Please keep an eye on your emails for the PPE timetable- this will also be shared with students via edulink.

On Monday 9th October, 20 Year 9 pupils had the opportunity to visit New Scientist Live at the ExCel. They were able to listen to main stage talks and interact with 80 exhibitors!
The science trip was an amazing opportunity to see how things are done on a day-to-day basis and also to see new discoveries that have been made. It was a fantastic experience and overall, I had a really good time. - Driti Chintalapalli (9Ox)
We had our inaugural session of our STEM Club on Tuesday 19th September, and began our very first project of making our own badges on Tuesday the 3rd of October. Students came prepared with their waste material like bottle lids and pieces of cardboard. They painted their own versions of the STEM club motto and finally fastened them to their blazers. The students were amply assisted by our Y12 leaders, Xixuan He and Laiba Bokhari, who guided the youngsters with their ideas and suggestions.
At STEM Club this week, we made badges out of materials that would normally be thrown into landfill. On our badges we drew the logo for STEM club (what a waste). The reason we made these badges was to represent our club and to show everybody that we can recycle and reuse materials - Neo Soobratty, Samuel Hurst, Finn Rooney -Y7 In STEM on Tuesday we made our badges and we had materials that are recyclable to make badges like: Paper and bottle caps. We also had hot glue, paint and older students to help us. Mine was a base of cardboard and blue paper which was put together with hot glue, a planet earth and the words "what a waste" in white posca then I hot glued a pin to put it on my blazer. It is important to symbolise we are a group - Alfie Beechend Y7 My idea for the badge was for it to be similar to the stem club logo. I couldn't draw the gear because of the amount of space so I left it out and just wrote ' WHAT A WASTE '. To make my badge I sandpapered the bottle lid to about half size, put hot glue into the lid and before it dried I pushed a card with the painted design into the lid. After I hot glued on the pin, I poured resin over the design and waited for it to dry. It is important to make badges so people know what we are doing and representing the club - Adriana Valionkina Y7
Mary Poppins This week saw the cast list of our February, whole school production of Mary Poppins junior being announced. We had a huge turnout for our auditions, across several dates due to the online learning rotation, to ensure everyone got the opportunity to take part. The standard was exceptionally high, along with the energy and excitement that everyone displayed, and the casting was more difficult than ever. As well as the 90 plus students who auditioned to perform in the show, we also have a team of very enthusiastic production and technical support students come forward and start work behind the scenes! Rehearsals start next week and we can't wait! It's going to be Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
The Government Inspector - Splendid Productions Team Drama were proud to once again host the amazing Splendid Productions with their touring production of The Government Inspector, on Thursday 5th October. Our GCSE and A level students were given the opportunity to watch the production, and then take part in a question and answer session with the cast, and artistic director Kerry Frampton. Many of our older students remembered Kerry from the previous tour Ubu, where she performed herself. The year 13 students made additional use of this, as they have chosen to perform in this style for their upcoming performance examination. Kerry and her team were delighted at the engagement and the very well thought out questions from everyone who attended. Well done team!
Tuesday was World Mental Health Day and students were sent a little video and a speech bubble to encourage them to get talking ... hopefully some of these made it home with them for a chat on Tuesday evening! Our assemblies this week were based on the benefits of talking and positive selftalk this video has been shared widely and is a really encouraging idea to support our mental health and wellbeing.
The PTA is in urgent need of support from parents/carers. The Chair/Treasurer/Secretary took over in the summer as a temporary measure and wish to stand down. Without your support the PTA will need to close and that will lose valuable financial support for the students. That would be a great shame in difficult times and the loss of those valuable extras it has provided over the years.
PLEASE HELP US HELP THE STUDENTS. We meet once or twice every half term and plan events to raise funds Please contact pwershof@rodingvalley.net
Dear Parents/Carers
A reminder to you that the Careers Microsite contains lots of information about Post 16 and Post 18 options as well as a copy of the weekly sixth form bulletin. If your son/daughter is in Year 11, on the Post 16 Options page you will find a list of open day events for the local sixth forms and colleges. Mrs Mason - Careers Leader
Please be reminded that all students should be in correct uniform. PE kit should not be worn to school. If there are issues with uniform then please contact the Academic Mentor or YPL who can support with this. We are also asking for any unwanted used uniform to be donated to the school. If you have any spare items at home please do send them in with your child to be dropped off in reception.
Old PE Kit If any parents/carers have any old RVHS PE kit which their child has outgrown even if it has a name or initials embroidered on it, the PE Department would be more than happy to take this off your hands and use it as a spare kit for students. Also, the PE department is looking for any donations of outgrown trainers and or football boots that we can add to our spare kit collection. Thanks in advance for your support.
Congratulations to the following students for their fantastic work in Literacy and during Drop Everything and Write (DEAW)

1
Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.
2
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
3
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
4
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.
5
Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
6
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
7
8
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to. Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.
Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
