Message from the Headteacher

Dear Roding Valley High School Community

As we approach the end of an incredible academic year, I want to look back on a phenomenal few weeks at Roding Valley High School and share some exciting events on the horizon.

Our recent Sports Day was a spectacular highlight, showcasing our students' immense talent, teamwork, and house spirit Equally impressive was our Year 10 Careers Week, which proved to be an incredible success Our students engaged brilliantly throughout the week, gaining invaluable insights into their future paths I must also praise Year 10 for their professional and dedicated approach to their recent PPEs They handled the examination environment with maturity and focus, setting an excellent standard for next year.

This week, Year 13 students joined us for their final Leavers' Assembly as they draw ever closer to the end of their seven-year journey with us at Roding Valley The day ended with the Year 13 Prom; those in attendance had a wonderful time, and it was great to see so many staff and students join the celebrations

We were also pleased to host visitors from a school in China, who shadowed our students, attended lessons, and participated in various extracurricular activities. This visit offered them valuable insight into the English education system through real-life classroom experiences My thanks go to the MFL department and the wonderful Mr Melvin for coordinating this opportunity

Looking ahead, our school calendar remains packed with enriching experiences. We are eagerly anticipating our KS3 Summer Showcase, alongside our upcoming Languages Day Educational visits are also in full swing, with exciting school trips heading to both the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum to bring classroom learning to life

I am deeply thankful to our parents and carers for your unwavering support with school attendance. Thanks to our collective efforts, we have seen a significant increase in attendance this year, moving us slightly above the national average.

This achievement is a true testament to the dedication of our parents, students, and staff However, we still receive a high number of term-time holiday requests. Please accept this as a gentle reminder that, as a strict school rule, these will not be authorised. Sustaining high attendance until the very last day is vital for your child’s academic progress

With the end of term only two weeks away, student welfare remains our top priority Over the next fortnight, we will be running a vital series of sessions focused on keeping safe during the summer. These will be delivered comprehensively across our assemblies, Personal Development (PD) sessions, and morning tutor time to ensure everyone enjoys a happy, secure break

We will officially conclude the academic year on Friday 17th July Students will take part in their final celebration assemblies that morning to mark their achievements Please note that school will finish early at 12:20pm on this day. Thank you once again for your continued partnership and support throughout this fantastic year.

As we head into the final stretch of the term, we would like to take a moment to remind everyone of the importance of maintaining our high standards right up until the final bell Excellent attendance and punctuality remain crucial for academic success, so please ensure students are arriving on time every day Furthermore, we expect all students to continue wearing their full school uniform with pride; standard rules regarding shoes, ties and jewellery still apply Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school community sharp and focused.

Last week 64 of ourYear 7 students returned from an action-packed 4-day residential trip, and it’s safe to say memories were made that will last a lifetime

With the sun shining down on us all week, the energy never wavered Every single day was packed with thrilling challenges designed to push students out of their comfort zones.They bravely faced fears on the Trapeze, scaled new heights on the Rock Climbing wall, and channeled their inner warriors withArchery andAxeThrowing Back on the ground, high-stakes LaserTag called for tactical strategy, while Canoeing, the blindfolded SensoryTrail, and collaborativeTeam Building exercises brought everyone closer togetherThe fun didn’t stop when the sun went down, either Evenings were packed with entertainment, including a fiercely competitive Quiz Night, cheering on the England games and dancing the night away at the always-popular Silent Disco!

To the individuals responsible for nearly drowning me during the canoeing: be warned, I know who you are, and I will be after you Jokes aside, a massive thank you to all the students for their exemplary behavior and team spirit, and to the staff who made this brilliant trip possible.Year 7, you did us proud!

As we approach the end of the summer term, we would like to remind families of our uniform expectations Please ensure that students continue to wear the correct school uniform in line with the recent email communication. While blazers are not currently required, students must still wear appropriate school shoes, and should not attend school in trainers.

Moreover, attendance remains a priority right up until the end of term. We encourage all students to attend school every day, ensuring they continue to make the most of every learning opportunity and finish the academic year positively

I want to say a massive thank you to all of our students for their continued hard work and fantastic engagement in lessons over the past two weeks I have received some wonderful emails from staff highlighting excellent effort across various subjects, and it has been truly lovely to see our students taking such pride in their learning Keep up the brilliant work!

We want to wish all of ourYear 9 students a huge good luck for Sports Day this week! We know we have some fantastic athletes in the year group, but we are equally proud of the many students who are stepping up, taking part, and giving it their absolute everything Your team spirit and determination are wonderful to see go out there and make your house proud!

As the weather stays warm, we are currently allowing students to leave their blazers at home due to the high temperatures. However, please remember that this is the only exception, we still expect the rest of the school uniform to be absolutely perfect.

All of these expectations, from perfect uniform to distraction-free classrooms, are in place to create the best possible learning environment for our students Apositive learning environment is built on mutual respect, high standards, and a focus on growth When students arrive on time, dressed smartly, and without the distraction of mobile phones, they are mentally primed and ready to learn This consistency allows our teachers to focus entirely on delivering high-quality lessons and ensures that every student has the calm, focused space they need to reach their full potential

We have come to the end of the PPEs and Careers week and I am really pleased with the way that Year 10 have conducted themselves Despite the intense heat, students behaved well as they entered the exam hall and were well prepared I hope that the results will give a good indication as to the progress of your child as they think aboutYear 11 and their progression

Monday saw the whole cohort in the sports hall for a Business Enterprise Day Students worked in small groups to design a product or business with a focus on sustainability There were several winning designs ranging from a shoe with a GPS tracker to a biodegradable tennis ball

Trip to Epping Forest District Council Offices

We took 26 students to the Epping Forest District Council Offices to have a day of work experience They were able to meet teams from the different council departments including HR, Housing and Environmental Health They then designed a new logo for the new council when it reforms into West Essex in 2 years

Sixth Form Taster Day - Monday 22 June nd

We welcomed almost 200 students to get a flavour of sixth form life last Monday. There was quite an equal split between 100 internal and 100 external students at the event Students were able to participate in a fun and engaging lesson that aligned with their sixth form choices They also got the chance to mingle with current sixth formers and ask them about what it’s like to be in year 12 and 13 here

One year 12 science students have had a great day learning about cutting edge science in lots of different fields. They have been able to talk to researchers to learn more about their work but also their career paths and the University they work for. Some of the highlights include:

This week we welcomed our first of this year's group of Chinese visitors to our school.Throughout their 3 days, they gained insight into the British secondary school system, but more importantly made friendships that will hopefully last. This week, Messy Science Club transformed their lab into a vibrant workshop to explore the fizzing chemistry behind custom bath bombs By experimenting with ratios of baking soda, citric acid, and pigments, the students engineered a brilliant spectrum of swirling, kaleidoscopic creations The result was a successful, hands-on lesson in acid-base reactions that left everyone with a colourful, bubbling souvenir to take home

From Engineering Club, we have the body / chassis made from plastic packaging with servos attached on either end of the car Using a 3D printer and servo attachments, wheels were printed from PLA(Polylactic Acid ) plastic Engineering club will soon seek to use better sustainable sources for their wheels

Coding club used a servo module and code a microbit to code the car move With the help of George P and Samuel H fromYear 9 discovery, the club seek to create future codes to drive the cars

On Friday, 19 June, 75 of our fantastic students headed out to compete in the West Essex & Harlow DistrictAthletics Competition Despite the long, hot, and tiring day under the sun, our athletes gave it their absolute all, competing with incredible enthusiasm, determination, and excellence. th

Their hard work paid off massively, with ourYears 7–10 athletes bringing home a fantastic total of 20 medals!

Holidays in Term Time

The school does not authorise any holidays during term time except if the Headteacher deems it an exceptional circumstance.A‘Leave ofAbsence’form must be completed (these are available at Student Reception) detailing your exceptional circumstances

Please be aware if the absence is not authorised and the holiday is taken, the case will be referred to the LocalAuthority who may issue a Penalty Notice for £160 (or £80 if paid within 21 days) to each parent for each child taken out of school.

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

How to Log on to Google Classroom?

Classroom

Students can log into their Gmail using their school email address and their password Their school email will be the year they started at RVHS started plus their first initial and surname @rodingvalley.net (example- 19plarkin@rodingvalley.net).

Once yourchild has have logged in, they will need to click on the google apps button and then select ‘Google Classroom’

Your child will then be able to see all of the classes they belong to. They will then need to click on the class they want to use resources for and take a look at everything that their class teacher has posted for them to work on. They will be able to download items and make comments on them Teachers will be regularly posting new work on their Google Classrooms

What to Do if your child is a Missing a Subject their Google Classroom?

If your childis missing a Google Classroom for one of their subjects, they will need to click on the addition symbol, followed by ‘Join Class’ and then enter the Class Code for their missing subject Class Codes are available from their subject teacher
