Message from the Headteacher Dear Roding Valley High School Community As we reach the end of another remarkable academic year, I want to reflect on the incredible journey we have shared. This year has been defined by unprecedented transformation, with significant investments poured into our estates, academic frameworks, and enrichment programmes. This deep commitment to our site, students, and staff is already paying massive dividends across our entire community. Our school estate has undergone a complete revolution to provide the world-class facilities your children deserve. We are absolutely thrilled to have officially returned to our ‘New Building’ after 2.5 years in temporary classrooms. Your patience during this transition has been greatly appreciated, and the vibrant new learning environment was well worth the wait. Alongside this move, we have upgraded our state-of-the-art Astroturf pitch to elevate our sports provision, and by September will have fully refurbished the boys’ changing rooms, built an exciting new playground, and opened a brand new multigym in Zone 2. We are also looking ahead by completing extensive flood defence work to future-proof our campus, alongside launching an air conditioning feasibility study to ensure our classrooms remain comfortable year-round. Behind the scenes, we have rigorously upgraded our educational standards. This year, we researched and published our brand-new Expert TeachingFramework. To ensure this translates into exceptional classroom reality, we are implementing robust quality assurance processes to guarantee the highest academic standards. Our staff matched this ambition with a relentless commitment to professional development, engaging in extensive training both internally and externally. This included visiting leading schools to learn from their best practice, while proudly sharing our own successful methods with the wider educational community. School life has also extended far beyond the classroom walls. We supercharged our enrichment offer with over 60 clubs running during break and lunchtimes, ensuring every student found a passion to pursue. We also launched 85 school trips and residentials, creating unforgettable memories in New York, France, and Dorset. These experiences ran alongside multiple sporting successes, where our students competed and triumphed at the highest levels.

The impact of these changes is tangible. Our student attendance has risen significantly this year, showing that our children feel safe, motivated, and excited to learn. We are now an over-subscribed school with a waiting list, which is a true testament to the fact that people want to be here. Crucially, we remain fully staffed with exceptional professionals, and I am incredibly grateful for and proud of the work our staff do every single day. However, this year has also brought difficult moments. I want every parent, carer, professional, and community member to know how deeply appreciative we remain for the immense support and care shown to us during times of great adversity. Your kindness has been our strength. Looking to September, our drive will focus relentlessly on academic progress. We have the facilities, the expertise, and the systems in place, and we must continue to offer the very best experience for our students every single day. Year 7 News Message from Mr John Year 7 End of Year Update: Foundations Laid! What an incredible first year it has been for our Year 7 students. From the nerves of September to the confidence of July, they have successfully laid the academic, social, and personal foundations for their journey at Roding Valley. We wrapped up the term with a fantastic celebration assembly to recognise their hard work, resilience and community spirit. A massive well done to all our end-of-year award winners for their outstanding contributions to school life. Especially my Head of Year Award winner Zain Latif & Gracie Scott and Mr Charlton's Headteacher Award winner Alexia Kyriacou. As we head into the summer break, please talk to your children about staying safe: Water Safety: Only swim in supervised pools or beaches. Avoid open water, quarries, and reservoirs. Road & Bike Safety: Always wear a helmet when cycling and keep heads up (phones away!) near busy roads. Online Safety: Keep group chats kind and supportive and remember to take plenty of screen-free time to rest and recharge. It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. Year 8 News Message from Miss Aston As we come to the end of another successful school year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support throughout the year. It has been a pleasure working with our Year 8 students and watching them grow both academically and personally. As many of you know, I will now be starting my maternity leave. It has been a privilege to be your Head of Year, and I look forward to hearing about all of the wonderful achievements of the year group when I return. We recently held our end-of-year Celebration Assembly, and it was a fantastic way to recognise the many achievements of our students. Year 9 News Message from Miss Burke As we reach the end of another successful academic year, I would like to extend a huge thank you to all our parents, carers, staff and students for the support, encouragement and commitment you have shown throughout the year. Together, we have helped make this a memorable and successful year for our Year 9 students. It has certainly been a busy year, but one filled with achievement, growth and exciting opportunities. A significant milestone has been the GCSE options process. From taster lessons and our Options Evening to students carefully considering and selecting the subjects they wish to study further, our Year 9 students have approached every stage with maturity, enthusiasm and determination. They have embraced the process wholeheartedly and should be incredibly proud of the effort and commitment they have shown. Beyond the classroom, Year 9 have thrown themselves into an incredible range of enrichment opportunities. From our unforgettable ski trip, theatre visits, museum trips and Languages Day, to the Mini Marathon, Sports Day and District competitions, students have represented themselves and the school with enthusiasm, resilience and pride. Their willingness to get involved and make the most of every opportunity has been fantastic to see. These experiences, alongside their academic achievements, have helped our students grow in confidence, develop new skills and create lasting memories. None of this would have been possible without the dedication of our staff, the ongoing support of parents and carers, so thank you to everyone who has played a part in making this year such a success. Today, we also had the pleasure of celebrating our Year 9 students in our Summer Celebration Assembly, recognising and rewarding them for all they have achieved this year and the incredible potential they have shown as they continue their journey into Year 10. 6thForm FormNews News 6th Monday 6th July - University of Hertfordshire We are very grateful to the University of Hertfordshire, for welcoming 30 of our students to their campus last Monday. It was a lovely campus with some exceptional facilities. Their representative gave the students some really insightful information not just about the University of Hertfordshire itself, but also about UCAS applications in general. The students were engaged and a real credit to us all throughout the day.
The talk enabled me to realise skills I never knew I had, particularly regarding skills to add to my personal statement. Also, it was an eye-opener because it gave a real insight into university life - Arabella
‘The University of Hertfordshire trip was amazing, it was such an informative day and the talks really helped me with understanding how universities look at applications and gave great advice on how to make them stand out’ - Bella Sponge the Teacher! Nikita successfully masterminded the "Sponge the Teacher" event, bringing loads of energy and a fantastic crowd together for a brilliant cause. FIFA Tournament The competitive spirit was through the roof in ME2 recently as Joe, Sid, and Fox successfully organised and hosted the ultimate Year 7 FIFA Tournament! The room was buzzing with energy as players stepped up to the screens to test their tactical skills and quick reflexes. It was a brilliant showcase of talent, strategy, and pure passion for gaming.

It was our pleasure to recognise them for both their academic achievements but also for their wider contributions to school life. Friday 10th July - Become a Talk2Nish Peer Mental Health Mentor! Want to make a real difference in our school community? As a mentor, you’ll learn vital skills in active listening, understanding adolescent mental health, and how to safely support your peers when they need it most. Students enjoyed the day and found it useful. They all got a certificate and a Peer Mental health card, that they can wear on their lanyards.

SHOWCASE It was incredible to see so many outstanding projects in this year's Key Stage 3 Showcase. The theme this year was to create the impossible. There was a huge variety of different entries exploring this theme, a selection of which are shown below. I would like to thank all the students for their hard work and imagination in bringing this topic to life, as well as all the parents who have no doubt make many trips to arts and craft stores to help their children make such engaging projects.
Trips & Visits On Wednesday 15th July, 110 Year 8 pupils went to the Science Museum to see the concepts they have been learning all year in real-world contexts. Everyone’s favourite experience was the Wonderlab, where there were over 50 hands-on exhibits, live experiments, and much more!
Trips & Visits On Thursday 26th July, 120 Year 9 pupils visited the Natural History Museum. Visiting the Jurassic Oceans exhibition allowed them to observe how evolution has taken place over millions of years.
Trips & Visits Fifty seven Year 9 students participated in the Training, Practice expedition and the Qualifying expedition for the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. These expeditions took place in the Chelmsford and Danbury areas, and were thoroughly enjoyed by our young participants. All participants successfully completed these trials. Thank you to all the staff that attended and supported these 2 weekends.

The Year 9 Hospitality and Catering students hosted their first event on Wednesday 8th July. The students made a range of delicious treats for their guests; these included scones, fruit tarts, Victoria sponges, and a selection of sandwiches. The students also served tea and coffee. Well done to Year 9A/Ca1 for their amazing effort preparing and hosting the afternoon tea!

YEAR 12 PHOTOGRAPHY: RESPONDING TO PELLE CASS
Year 12 Photography Step Up to the Lens! Students have been researching American photographer Pelle Cass, known for his "Selected People" series. Cass uses a fixed camera position to take hundreds of photos over time, later compositing them into a single image to create a dense, chaotic, yet perfectly ordered documentation of movement and time. The Sports Day Response The Shoot: Students used the high-energy environment of Sports Day as their canvas. Setting up tripods for a perfectly static background, they captured track events and house relays. The Technique: By keeping the frame identical, the background remained constant while runners in vibrant bibs provided a dynamic, shifting narrative across the field. The Edit In post-production, students meticulously layered multiple frames. Using layer masks, they selectively revealed runners from different moments, compressing an entire afternoon of athletic competition into one surreal, high-traffic composition that perfectly captures the collective spirit of the day.

Green shells, Banana Peels and Big Smiles: Our Year 7 Mario Kart Club Crowns Its Champion! What a way to end the year! This week, our Year 7 Mario Kart Club held its Grand Prix Final — the finish line of a whole year of lunch time racing and friendly rivalry. After a nail-biting last lap, we havw congratulations to our new champion: Alex G. The club started in September as a fun way to unwind during lunch — but it became something more. Through wins, losses, and the odd banana peel disaster, this group of Year 7's built real friendships along the way. Strangers in September became firm friends by July. The Final Showdown The final had it all: dramatic overtakes, different winner every round. In the end, Alex crossed the line first to take the title. Well Done, Everyone - Huge congratulations to Alex — and to every member of the club for a brilliant year of racing, laughs, and friendship, I really enjoyed my lunches with you all. See you on the starting line in September!
Prior to the England and Argentina World Cup semi final our Year 7 Well-being group are excited and enjoying the build up to the match. They loved being given permission to wear their England shirts in school.

It amazes me how quickly a year can pass, but of course - time flies when you are having fun and my incredible group of Creative Writers ensure I am having bundles of fun every Friday lunchtime! As we complete our 7th year of Creative Writing Club, I really thought I must have seen it all by now, but our Creative writers continuously push their imaginations to new heights and amaze me with their enthusiasm and originality. This compilation booklet is the biggest we have ever produced and the quality of the writing is outstanding. The maturity of expression our writers are using is of a quality way beyond their years and I have no doubt you will adore reading their stories. It is such a pleasure to work with these young minds and experience the joy they bring to their stories. They have worked collaboratively with certain pieces of writing (Superhero Battles, as one example), chosen writing topics for themselves and been endlessly enthusiastic about everything we have done this year. Students such as these are a credit to our school - they are rays of sunshine who bring smiles to the faces of anyone who meets them. I am the luckiest teacher to have the opportunity to spend so much time with them throughout the year! Student Absence If your child is unable to attend School for any reason, please report their absence by phoning the school number by 8.30am at the latest, you must also ring in each day of your child’s absence. 0208-508-1173 On their return to School, please ensure your child brings with them a letter or medical evidence if requested explaining the reason for the absence for our records.
Medical Appointments Please make sure you make any medical or dental appointments outside of school time. If this is not possible then please try to ensure that your child attends before and/or after their appointment.
Holidays in Term Time The school does not authorise any holidays during term time except if the Headteacher deems it an exceptional circumstance. A ‘Leave of Absence’ form must be completed (these are available at Student Reception) detailing your exceptional circumstances. Please be aware if the absence is not authorised and the holiday is taken, the case will be referred to the Local Authority who may issue a Penalty Notice for £160 (or £80 if paid within 21 days) to each parent for each child taken out of school. Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust. Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults. Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to. Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.
Support your child with CEOP Education website The age appropriate CEOP Education website is a great way to start and continue chats about online safety and other issues. Click on the CEOP image to access the site The website provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried. If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP .

How Can I Access Edulink? EduLink can be accessed on any device – PC, laptop, tablet or mobile device – via the web browser or via the EduLink app. The link to access the EduLink login page on a web browser is www.edulinkone.com Alternatively, you can download the EduLink App which is available to download for free on Apple or on Android. Both the App and the web browser will display this log-in screen. The School ID is ‘Roding’. Parents/Carers will need to enter the Username and Password they have been provided with and click ‘Log in’.

Classroom How to Log on to Google Classroom? Students can log into their Gmail using their school email address and their password. Their school email will be the year they started at RVHS started plus their first initial and surname @rodingvalley.net (example- 19plarkin@rodingvalley.net). Once yourchild has have logged in, they will need to click on the google apps button and then select ‘Google Classroom’ Your child will then be able to see all of the classes they belong to. They will then need to click on the class they want to use resources for and take a look at everything that their class teacher has posted for them to work on. They will be able to download items and make comments on them. Teachers will be regularly posting new work on their Google Classrooms.
What to Do if your child is a Missing a Subject their Google Classroom? If your childis missing a Google Classroom for one of their subjects, they will need to click on the addition symbol, followed by ‘Join Class’ and then enter the Class Code for their missing subject. Class Codes are available from their subject teacher.
Top Tips for Our Students Students must keep up to date with their lessons by using Google Classroom every day. Use their workbooks to complete the work shown on their Google Classroom. Don’t slack on presentation! Keep their notes in order of the lessons on the Google Classroom. Year 11and 13 Students: There will be revision materials available on Google Classroom. Please use them.
