This landmark shift aims to tackle online harms, combat cyberbullying, and protect the mental health of young people.
In alignment with this national direction and the Department for Education’s mobile phone guidance, we will shortly be launching a parental consultation to review our school's mobile phone policy Our objective is to design a robust policy that protects learning time, improves peer-to-peer socialisation, and supports families in managing digital boundaries
While we recognise that many students carry phones for peace of mind during their school commute, smartphones also bring algorithm-driven apps, chat notifications, and camera functionalities into the school day. We want to understand your views on how we manage these devices on site The consultation will explore options ranging from stricter "off and away in bags" rules to the potential use of secure pouches, as well as distinct arrangements for our 11–16 pupils and our Sixth Form students We are also seeking your thoughts on whether encouraging basic "non-smart" phones for school travel could help reduce digital pressure on children
In other news, we have recruited a number of new teaching staff for September that will further strengthen our team Academic rigour is crucial in maintaining excellent exam results, and adding new expertise to our staff body is a great way to ensure that all students are getting the very best experience in the classroom
Another part of this is to ensure that our subject curricula are robust and of the highest quality. Over the past term middle and senior leaders have been auditing these and identifying areas for improvement to ensure that your child is acquiring the specific knowledge that they need to unlock further knowledge. Alongside this we have been working on our teaching and learning framework A task force of around 20 volunteers have been meeting over the last year to research, design and now implement our new Expert Teaching Framework. This new framework was designed alongside our partner schools in CLP and is based on the most up-to-date research We believe that these changes will have significant and positive impacts on our students and cannot wait to implement them.

It has been another busy and successful period for ourYear 7 students. I would like to congratulate theY7/8 Rounders team on their fantastic achievement in winning the District RoundersTournament The team demonstrated excellent teamwork, determination and sportsmanship throughout the competition, and we are incredibly proud of their success
We are also looking forward to next week's residential visit to PGLCaythorpe.This promises to be an exciting opportunity for students to challenge themselves, develop new skills and create lasting memories with their peers We know the students are eager to take part in the wide range of activities on offer and we wish them a wonderful and rewarding experience.

Bedrock and Reading
Please encourage your child to complete their weekly Bedrock learning activities and read regularly at home. Reading for at least 20 minutes each day helps to develop vocabulary, comprehension, and a love of learning. Regular use of Bedrock also supports classroom learning and helps pupils make excellent progress
End ofYearAssessments
Students will be completing their end-of-year Maths and English assessments over the coming weeks in their lessons These assessments provide an important opportunity for students to demonstrate the progress they have made throughout the year and will help inform planning for the next stage of their learning
The results of these assessments will be included in students' summer reports. We encourage all students to continue working hard in lessons, completing homework, and reading regularly at home to ensure they are well prepared.

Year 10 are now halfway through their PPEs and I have been impressed with their attitude towards these exams
Next week sees the start of the big core exams which involves the whole cohort and so please do remind your child to ensure that they have checked their seat number on Edulink in order to make the entry into the exam hall as smooth as possible. The timetable can be found here.

On Wednesday 3rd June, we invited 35 of our ambitious year 12 students to interview for the prestigious role of Head Prefect We were delighted that so many of this fantastic year group put themselves forward The process was extremely competitive and very difficult for the teachers and governors involved 11 students made it through to the second round and a final 6 students were selected as our new student executive
Congratulations to Eylul Ugur and Sonny Heath, who take up the role of Head Prefect for 2026-27 Congratulations also toAbigail Burger, Sapphire Fyffe,AndrewAgbonson and Isabella Soosai, who are our new Senior Prefects.

We had a wonderful time at the recent summer fair Although the weather was not what we had hoped for at the beginning of June, the event was nonetheless a great success We welcomed over 300 parents, students and prospective families into our wonderful new building There were plenty of stalls from local businesses as well as food stalls and a very popular tombola and raffle. Many young people were queuing for a picture with one of Amy’s Amazing Reptiles and lots of families got involved with the student stalls - a scavenger hunt, glitter tattoos and penalty shoot out amongst other things

Day 1 - Investigating Woodland Biodiversity
After arriving at Flatford Mills we had an introduction to the practical we were carrying out led by our lovely instructors We made our way to the woodlands, passing many sheep and observing the beautiful wildlife around us, which was super enjoyable Upon arrival, we were given a demonstration of how to carry out the practical: Our objective was to compare biodiversity between light and dark areas of Grove Woodlands
Day 2 - Salt marsh succession
We travelled to Holbrook salt marsh to study the plants found on different parts of the shore Some of us managed to get stuck in the mud but everyone had lots of fun
Day 3 - Choice Chamber Practical
On this day, we were investigating the behavioural responses of woodlice to light and dark stimuli We really enjoyed this practical! We flipped logs over revealing many woodlice as it’s their habitat

English Department Trip to see Oliver!
Year 7 students enjoyed a fantastic day out to see Oliver! at the Geilgud Theatre, bringing their study of Charles Dickens vividly to life. Having explored Dickens' work earlier in the year, students were delighted to experience the story performed on stage, gaining a deeper appreciation of the characters, themes, and historical context.
The trip was led by Ms Vali, Ms Taylor and Mr Hussain who all agreed that the enthusiasm shown by students was clear as they fully immersed themselves into the world of Victorian London! The performance was truly spectacular, with memorable songs, and impressive staging captivating our students from start to finish leaving them asking, “Please Sir, we want some more!”

During this week'sY7 Messy Science Club, pupils experimented with varying ratios of glue, water, and activators to investigate how different chemical mixtures alter a material's behaviour. By carefully adjusting their recipes, the students successfully engineered a wide spectrum of slime, ranging from highly elastic, stretchy strands to dense, putty-like globs.

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

How to Log on to Google Classroom?
Classroom
Students can log into their Gmail using their school email address and their password Their school email will be the year they started at RVHS started plus their first initial and surname @rodingvalley.net (example- 19plarkin@rodingvalley.net).
Once yourchild has have logged in, they will need to click on the google apps button and then select ‘Google Classroom’
Your child will then be able to see all of the classes they belong to. They will then need to click on the class they want to use resources for and take a look at everything that their class teacher has posted for them to work on. They will be able to download items and make comments on them Teachers will be regularly posting new work on their Google Classrooms
What to Do if your child is a Missing a Subject their Google Classroom?
If your childis missing a Google Classroom for one of their subjects, they will need to click on the addition symbol, followed by ‘Join Class’ and then enter the Class Code for their missing subject Class Codes are available from their subject teacher
