I want to start this letter by offering my congratulations to all year 11 students, most of whom finished their GCSE exams today. There are a small number of exams that will continue over the next week or so, but for the majority of the cohort they are done. I spoke with the year group at the beginning of their final exam in Physics to tell them how proud of them I am for the way in which they have approached the exam season, and for all the hard work that they have put in over the past 5 years at Roding Valley. They now have a long summer to look forward to, starting with the Year 11 Leavers Assembly and Prom. In my letter to all parents and carers earlier today (here) I announced that we are bringing forward the end of term for students to 19th July. This is to allow us to begin preparation for the new kitchen and catering facility that will be installed over the summer and also to allow some staff to change locations of offices and classrooms ahead of the new year. After 8 months with our new temporary buildings, we have a much clearer picture of how we want to organise the school next year to maximise the teaching and learning of all students and offer a full curriculum. You may have read various newspaper articles over the last few weeks about the use of mobile phones in schools. The Department for Education (DfE) released guidance for schools on prohibiting the use of mobile phones throughout the school day in February of this year. In the foreword, Gillian Keegan talks about the ‘large variation in how different schools are managing the use of mobile phones. There is considerable good practice, including schools with exemplary behaviour cultures that are already implementing and enforcing tight restrictions. However, despite the best efforts of staff, in some settings, the use of mobile phones remains a daily battle.’
