Dear Roding Valley High School Community

I hope this letter finds you well. As a school we are always looking at ways to protect our community from the dangers and risks presented by modern technology, particularly mobile phones.

Our current mobile phone policy has been in place for a number of years and has worked well for the school community. However, new apps such as Ten Ten, which turns mobile phones into walkie-talkies, have presented us with new challenges as lessons have been disrupted and learning time lost.

In addition, some pupils continue to be tempted to check their phones for messages throughout the school day, increasing the risk that phones will distract pupils from their work or use them inappropriately.

We understand that for safety reasons some parents want their children to carry a mobile phone with them to and from school, particularly if they travel on public transport, but there is no reason why mobile phones should be switched on whilst in the school building. In our policy it states that mobile phones should be switched off once students enter the school premises and they should not be switched back on until students leave the school. This will mean that:

Pupils must carry a paper timetable with them at all times so that they do not need to check Edulink (these have been and will continue to be provided by the school) Pupils must top-up their food account in the morning before they leave the house as they will not be able to do it school; If pupils need to contact family or carers then they will need to speak with their form tutor, head of year or student reception.

If mobile phones are seen or heard at any time on the school premises they will be confiscated. For first offences, pupils will be able to collect their phone at the end of the day. For second and subsequent offences, parents will be required to collect mobile phones at the end of the day and they will not be handed back to pupils.
