RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Week ending: Friday 24th May 2019 Message from the Head of School It has been a very calm and purposeful end to this half term. The external exams have been going really well and the students continue to be incredibly focused and very positive. On Thursday evening, we held the launch night for the KS3 Challenge and Enrichment Project. It was fantastic to see so many enthusiastic students with unique and imaginative ideas. Due the evening’s success, we would like to extend the invitation to take part, to all pupils in Year 7 and 8. To participate, students would need to create a project for display, on any topic they are passionate about and include a 500 word evaluation of their research and creation process. Some previous projects have included: a model solar system, a Tour De France inspired map (complete with spinning bicycle wheel) and a model of Turing’s Morse code machine. Then on Thursday 20th June, the projects will be displayed in the School Hall and judged by the Mayor of Loughton and the School Governors. There is also the chance to win four different prizes! This is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to demonstrate their passion and creativity as well as encouraging independent learning and research. Can I also remind Year 10 parents to return their slips for the ‘Take your child to work’ day to Mrs. Mason as soon as possible. Assemblies this week have focused on ‘Student Leadership’ opportunities. The newly appointed Head Boy, Sam Copeman and Head Girl, Maisha Khondokar, introduced themselves and their senior team to the students, laying out their aspirations for the roles and what they hope to achieve for the school. They also introduced the new House Captains, who led their first House assemblies. I strongly believe in student voice and the success of the House system, hence, we have decided to extend these leadership opportunities through all the age groups. We have invited applications from all years to be one of the first ever House Leaders, this will give students a voice from every House in every year. This is a great opportunity for students to meet new people and work closely with other students from different year groups. I would like to remind all parents about the schools uniform expectations. The uniform is generally exemplary and I do not want this to slip. Please do check the length of your daughter’s skirt; they should be worn below the knee. Please can you also ensure that girls are wearing either short white ankle socks or black tights, knee high socks are not permitted. All students must wear their House tie, if your child does not have one please purchase one over the half term break. With the increasingly warm weather, may I remind students that blazers must be worn at all times, permission will be given to remove blazers if it gets too hot. Shoes should be black leather and trainers are not permitted except for medical reasons and a doctor’s note should be provided. I appreciate you supporting the school thus ensuring that all students are in perfect uniform when they return from half term break on Monday 3rd June. I hope everyone enjoys the half term break! Message from Mr Dobson We are now approaching the final half-term of what has been another jam packed and successful school year here at RVHS. Now we are halfway through the GCSE exam season, I would firstly like to wish everyone in Year 11 the best of luck. They have worked (and continue to work) so hard, and deserve every bit of their success when they open the results envelopes in August. Looking forward; it is essential to remember the importance of putting in maximum effort throughout a student's whole school career. As Year 11 will tell anyone who asks, putting in the hours as early as possible will see nothing but positive results. It is never too soon to develop skills and enhance knowledge. Whether you are in Year 7 or Year 13, always remember that the harder you work, the more effort you put in, and the more you embrace the opportunities that you are given, the easier and more rewarding it will be in the long run.

Message from Mr Ryan It has been another brilliant half term at Roding Valley High and Year 9 has really shown themselves to be excellent members of the school community. Taking part in the school production, the D of E and many other sporting activities. I hope that this continues for next half term. I would ask that parents do check the school website for information about uniform and any up-coming events. I would like to point out that knee high socks are not permitted and girls must wear either black tights or short white socks. After half-term, Year 9 start their GCSE classes. The timetables are nearly ready and your children will be given these on Monday when we return. Could I ask that you check for any emails you may have received from the school regarding equipment that is necessary for the courses your child has chosen. Dear Parents/Carers, I have been going through all of the Year 10 'Take your child to work day' forms and seen how many fantastic opportunities the students are participating in whilst work shadowing parents. If you work for a company that would like to engage with the school please put me in touch with their talent acquisition team. I am always looking for apprenticeship, work experience placements and employment opportunities for the students of Roding Valley. In the summer term I will be running two events: 

The annual Mock Interview Day on Wednesday 3rd July for Year 10. If you work in HR and have experience of conducting interviews and would like to spend the day interviewing students then please let me know. It is a really rewarding day and many parents have joined us over the years.



The annual Business Breakfast for Year 12 is on Tuesday 18th June. This event is run in the speed dating format and gives our students the opportunity to speak to employers, develop their networking and communication skills as well as securing work experience and future apprenticeship opportunities. If your company would like to join in please let me know and I will send them an invitation.

Student Absence If your child is unable to attend School for any reason, please report their absence by phoning the school number by 9.30am at the latest, you must also ring in each day of your child’s absence. 0208-508-1173 On their return to School, please ensure your child brings with them a letter . or medical evidence if requested explaining the reason for the absence for our records.

Medical Appointments Please make sure you make any medical or dental appointments outside of school time. If this is not possible then please try to ensure that your child attends before and/or after their appointment.

Holidays in Term Time It is not school policy to authorise any holidays during term time except in exceptional circumstances. A ‘Leave of Absence’ form must be completed (these are available at Student Reception) should you require leave for your child, a letter detailing your exceptional circumstances should accompany it. Please be aware if the absence is not authorised and the holiday is taken, the case may be referred to the Education Welfare Service who may issue a Penalty Notice for £120 (or £60 if paid within 21 days) to each parent for each child taken out of school.
