at sou die bekende Uile bende oor die brand in Jack Pauw koshuis by Vo l k s k o o l die afgelope Maandagaand gesê het? Dit is nie vergesog om dit te vra nie, want die skrywer van die bekende tienerreeks, die Uile, was die koshuisvader van Jack Pauw. Hy het vier seunsmaats in die koshuis geïdenti eer wat gedien het a in pira ie ir die boeke. Hy het hulle elke aand uitgevra oor hulle doen en late deur die dag en saans die stories geskryf. Cor Dirks was die eerste koshuisvader nadat die skool in 1926 ingewy is. “Die genade van die Here was groot,” is die eerste woorde wat die huidige koshuisvader en onderhoof van Volkskool, mnr Daan Seymore, Dinsdagoggend by die swartgebrande koshuis geuiter het, terwyl die trane in sy oë opwel. Die brand het net voor 21:00 uitgebreek en alarm is toe gemaak. Kwalik 15 minute later sou die koshuis gesluit gewees het vir die nag en die seuns sou waarskynlik binne vasgekeer gewees het, vertel hy. Daar is 38 seuns in die koshuis, wat wissel van graad 8 tot 10 en enkele matrieks wat studenteraadslede is. Alarm is gemaak deur drie “slim” kinders. Seuns wat ‘n goeie akademiese rekord het, mag in hulle kamers studeer en drie van dié manne was in hulle kamers besig om te leer toe h lle n oort ontploffing gehoor het en kort daarna die plafon sien inval het. Die koshuis is onmiddellik ontruim en geen beserings is aangemeld nie. Slegs die boonste verdieping is in die brand verwoes en sommige van die kamers in die onderste verdieping, asook die woonstel van Mnr Seymore en sy vrou, Irene, bekende netbalafrigter, het waterskade opgedoen. Brandbestryders wat ondersoek instel na die oorsaak van die brand het Dinsdagoggend interessante kenmerke van ‘n brand uitgewys: Oor waar dit ontstaan en wat dit veroorsaak het. Hierdie bewyse word gestaaf deur watter skakelaars byvoorbeeld op die kragboks onmiddellik af is, toe die brand ontstaan het. Die oggend na die brand, krap seuns tussen die swartverbrande as op die boonste verdie-

ping rond. Party lyk geskok, maar sê hulle is “oukei”, ander maak al klaar grappies. Almal is ontsteld oor hulle sporttoerusting: ‘n R17 et waar an net dele an die elling en speke oor is of ‘n besondere krieketkolf wat in die slag gebly het. ‘n Graad 10 seun loop enkeldiep deur die water en jubel: “Ek het my Bybel en beursie gekry! Dis perfek!” Later vertel die brandweerspan van Tlokwe Stadraad dat die gemeenskap van Potchefstroom hulle weer eens verstom het. Een van die brandweermanne vertel met ‘n groot glimlag: “Ek was later lus om die polisie te vra om ‘n kordon te span om die helpers op ‘n veilige afstand te hou. Almal wou help!” Brandweerspanne van die Landboukollege, die Puk-kapmus, Weermag, die Burgerlike Brandweervereniging en natuurlik Tlokwe self, het ‘n gedugte span van om en by 35 mense gevorm wat die vlamme binne nagenoeg 45 minute geblus het. “Dit het ons daarna nog ‘n uur en ‘n half geneem om die res van die smeulende puin te doof,” vertel hy. Die skoolgemeenskap en personeel het net lof vir die hulp wat deur die Potchefstromers (en danksy sosiale media, ook uit die buiteland) aangebied is. ‘n Dankbare ouer sê ook: “Mev Mapaseka Sebolai van die Noordwes Departement van Onderwys wat reeds Maandagaand op die toneel was, verdien ook besondere dank vir haar betrokkenheid.” Hulp het gestrek van ‘n boks vol T-hemde wat deur Laurius koshuis op die Puk-kampus nog dieselfde aand afgelewer is, tot slaapplek - , kos- en geldaanbiedinge. Die kinders en koshuisouers het die nag in die Elgro Hotel gebly. Die hotel behoort aan die Beheerliggaamvoorsitter, Kobus Fourie. Berading is vir die kinders gereël. Slegs drie matriekleerlinge is deur die brand geraak. Onderwysers het Dinsdag reeds begin om hulle te help om handboeke en aantekeninge te vervang. Die Rekordeksamen wat tans by Volkskool aan die gang is, word sonder enige onderbreking verder geskryf. Die graad 8 tot 11 leerlinge wat besig is met die lente-toetsreeks is twee dae vergunning gegee om net weer tot verhaal te kom terwyl alternatiewe reëlings vir die koshuisseuns getref word.

Artists get new gallery in Potch ¢ LYNDLE HAAGNER

ocal artist Annemarie Coetzee is rolling out an entirely new experiential concept for Potchefstroom artists. This vision of a gallery-café-studio trio, Keurbos, invites artists to display their work on a non-commission basis at a minimal fee. “I want to create a contemporary adult space where our local art community can exhibit their work and come together to discuss art. It is exclusively for our local artists as I want to grow our community,” said Annemarie. “I will also be painting in my studio and patrons are welcome to embrace the atmosphere as long as they maintain a respect for the creative environment”. Art classes and workshops will also take place on the premises. Annemarie has called Potch home since 1998 and lives here with her husband Willie Coetzee. As a BSc graduate she has always been fascinated by how things work and it was after a family tragedy that she started painting. “It became a learning path to obtain a perspective on life again,” she says. To keep the process of painting spontaneous she starts directly with colour on the canvas, without any sketching. Her personal style is evident through her interchange of bright colours, living shadows and capturing the soul of a scene. “My aim is to convey a harmony between the structured environment and the invisible “atmosphere” hovering over the scene,” she explains. “I try to reproduce the fourth dimension as honestly as possible.” It is exactly that which she would like artists to experience at Keurbos Gallery. The gallery comes to life at Mooivallei Hoewe 12A through three neighbouring buildings: The gallery, studio and café. These take shelter beneath a dense canopy of poplar trees and are themed around an Italian-Medieval atmosphere. It is a cynosure of artistic vibrancy where patrons can view the art on display and relax to balletic ambient music. The spatial design, architecture and landscape are a backdrop of serenity, enhancing the charm. The official opening will take place at the end of September where notable Potchefstroom artists will exhibit their work. It promises to be a night celebrating culture and the bringing together of our town’s prominent art community. The gallery and studio will be open later this year and the café soon thereafter. She welcomes all artists and lovers of art to give in to their curiosity and come and enjoy the bracing experience that is Keurbos.

Keurbos Gallery is a tribute to Italian medieval architecture and will become a cultural hub for the Potchefstroom art community.

Die NorthWest Independent het in ons uitgawe van 20 Augustus Potchefstromers gevra om hul harte en beursies oop te maak vir Hendrik Botes (22). Hendrik, ’n inwoner van die Silver Med Sorg- en Rehabilitasiesentrum (Binneland) in Potchefstroom, het in 2013 ernstige breinbeserings in ’n motorongeluk opgedoen en hy het ’n spesiale rolstoel nodig gehad sodat hy nie meer aan sy bed vasgekluister hoef te wees nie. Potchefstroom het gehoor gegee aan die NWI se noodkreet namens Hendrik, en binne twee weke is R 14 500 ingesamel. Volgens Suster Myburg kan dit nog sowat drie jaar neem tot die Padveiligheidsfonds geld aan Hendrik uitbetaal, en intussen

raak die rekeninge al hoe groter. Op die oomblik is daar sowat R 30 000 se rekeninge wat uitstaande is. “Hendrik se spraakterapie is hierdie week gestaak, en hy kan ook nie meer fisio bekostig nie,” vertel Suster Myburgh. Ten spyte van die donker wolk wat oor Hendrik se herstel hang, glimlag die moedige jong man, want Potchefstroom het gegee. Hy het sy stoel gekry! “Daar is soveel wonderlike mense, mense wat dit self nie breed het nie, wat gegee het, ons het die stoel gekoop en van sy rekeninge betaal,” vertel Suster Myburgh, geraak deur die vrymoedigheid van die dorp se inwoners. Miljoene (of waarskynlik miljarde) rande word net eenvoudig gemors. Dit is blykbaar ook nie meer cool om net eenvoudig pragtig te lyk op jou matriekafskeid nie. Kenners in die bedryf sê waar sulke geld betaal word, maak iemand regtig baie geld.

Nou wat het die aanhef oor Nkandla en matriekafskeide met mekaar ingemeen? Vermorsing en leierskap. Grootskaalse vermorsing EN swak leierskap. Hoe kan ons almal Nkandla veroordeel oor die geldmorsery, maar ons laat dit in ons eie geldere elke liewe jaar toe? Waar is die leiers, hetsy skoolleiers (of behoede ons) hoofde en onderwysers wat opstaan en sê: genoeg is genoeg? Tot hiertoe en nie een tree verder nie. Dit beteken nie: Moenie ‘n matriekafskeid hou nie! Kom ons dink net weer nuut oor die vermorsing, toon sterk leierskap en trek die matriekafskeidgesellighede weer in balans.

New hope for Alzheimer’s patients in Potch S amuel Broadbent has recently completed the construction of their new Alzheimer’s wing, which can accommodate 35 patients. There will be two sections: one for patients with early onset Alzheimer’s and the other for patients in the later stages. There will be one nurse per every eight patients to ensure quality care. The ofcial opening of thi nit orget e ot will take place this week. The home is also working on the construction of a sensory garden with the implementation of activities for the residents.

The Samuel Broadbent House for the elderly was founded by Mrs. Muriel Crosier and ofciall opened it door on a She realised the growing need for appropriate care and accommodation for the elderly and felt strongly that they needed to enjoy their remaining days in a safe and caring environment. She, along with a group of Potchefstroom Methodists initiated the scheme and it was to be a memorial to the early Missionaries who started the Methodist Church. This wo ld be the r t ethodi t home for the aged in the Transvaal and it was named after

Missionary Rev. Samuel Broadbent. Mrs. Muriel Crosier and two friends in particular, Mrs. Daphne Hurndall and Mrs. Maisie Owles, were instrumental in the development and erection of the home. Today 132 elderly folk can call Samuel Broadbent home thanks to the hard work and dedication of manager Mrs. Elsa Steenkamp. “I had been living in Potch for just over a year when, at a bible study group, someone mentioned that the Home needed a Nurse. I immediately took on the position and I’ve been here for 20 years,” she says. Elsa has great admiration for the elderly and is passionately involved in every resident’s life – ensuring that they can enjoy their remaining days in a peaceful, safe and happy communal environment.

Twee van die vroue, Portia Mosadi en Randy Nkotswana het elkeen ‘n driekuns behaal met drie drieë elk terwyl Mosadi ook drie doelskoppe deur die pale gejaag het vir ‘n persoonlike bydrae van 21 punte. Aretha Mabombo, wat van die bank af opgegaan het, het ook die aandag getrek met die vier doelskoppe waarmee sy geslaag het. Die afrigter Franklin Jackson sê die vroue het vanjaar besonder hard gewerk en verdien die boonste plek op die punteleer. “Dit is nie maklik om oefeninge te skeduleer nie want al die vroue werk voltyds. Dit verg harde werk om almal bymekaar te kry, maar ons het gewys wat vermag kan word deur harde werk en deursettingsvermoë. Nou vir die eindstryd,” sê Jackson. They jumped like little Springboks and ran like the wind. They are only in Grade 2 and Grade 3 but a week ago 500 school children in Promosa felt like Springboks when they were involved in the Leopards’ Get Into Rugby programme at the Promosa rugby stadium. The World Rugby vision is: Rugby - a sport for all, true to its values. Get Into Rugby is the IRB’s development programme which aims to grow the game across the world

and introduce people globally to rugby and the values of Integrity, Respect, Solidarity, Passion and Discipline which inspire millions of people to play the game. This programme is designed to assist World Rugby member Unions to develop rugby in a progressive and sustainable way. The Leopards Rugby Union hosted a fun day at the Promosa rugby stadium where children from surrounds competed in mini rugby matches. With mini rugby pitches r nning acro the eld three game were

taking place at once. With the help of the teachers teams quickly got into the swing of things. Teachers, male and female, were utilized as referees and with kids mauling for the ball, it was a free for all. Every now and again one of them would get hold of the ball and often r t r n back towards their own goal line before loudly shown the right way to go. Tries were scored and the celebratory dances by the try scorer and teammates alike were something to be admired.
