MYSTERY ROAD There’s nothing I love more than settling into a dark, moody mystery series — especially with Halloween just around the corner. Mystery Road follows detective Jay Swan as he investigates the disappearance of two young farmhands in the Australian Outback. If, like me, you’re a huge fan of slow-burn miniseries like True Detective or Mare of Easttown, I highly recommend Mystery Road. It’s the kind of show you’ll immediately get obsessed with and want to talk about with all your friends. The series premieres on Thursday, October 22 at 8pm on KQED 9, but I’m guessing you’ll want to binge through all the episodes as quickly as possible once you get started. THE LEGACY OF LUIS VALDEZ AND EL MOVIMIENTO

PROGRAM SCHEDULE

The story of playwright, screenwriter, film director and actor Luis Valdez is illuminated in American Masters: American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez. Regarded as the father of Chicano film and playwriting, Valdez transformed American culture by giving a voice to the overlooked and by authentically depicting Mexican American life. In 1965 his theater company El Teatro Campesino performed on flatbed trucks to mobilize farmworkers, helping them win their first union contract. His 1979 Zoot Suit was the first Chicano play ever performed on Broadway, and his film La Bamba was a breakout blockbuster in 1987. The documentary, which premieres on Tuesday, October 6, at 9pm on KQED 9, features extensive interviews with Valdez and others, as well as newly rescued archival footage specially restored for the program.
