Sunday sleuth CBS moves ‘Elementary’ to a new night By Kyla Brewer TV Media

herlock buffs beware: the world’s greatest detective is on the move. Fans looking for their Thursday night Sherlock fix are in for a mystery this week he’ll disappear, at least from Thursday nights. Viewers must tune in earlier in the week to catch British actor Jonny Lee Miller (“Trainspotting,” 1996) as an eccentric modern-day version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic character, as “Elementary” moves to Sundays, beginning March 20, on CBS. The series also stars Lucy Liu (“Charlie’s Angels,” 2000) as Sherlock’s apprentice, Dr. Watson, who began working with Holmes as his sober-living companion after the detective’s stint in rehab for drug addiction. The cast also includes Aidan Quinn (“Legends of the Fall,” 1994) as NYPD Capt. Tommy Gregson, Jon Michael Hill (“Detroit 1-8-7”) as Det. Marcus Bell and new addition John Noble (“Fringe”) as Holmes’ estranged father, Morland. Now in its fourth season, much of the success of the series relies on the interaction between Miller and Liu. Despite what many TV viewers might expect, Watson and Sherlock aren’t romantically linked

and it doesn’t look as if the writers have any plans to have them hook up any time soon. Show creator and producer Robert Doherty has described their relationship as a “bromance,” in which one of the “bros” is really a woman. Things are strictly platonic, at least so far. In a recent interview with the New York Post, Miller explained why. “Holmes and Watson’s relationship is sacred,” said Miller. “The fact that one’s a man and one’s a woman is irrelevant; it’s who they are as people that’s important. The original Holmes and Watson were not romantically involved and, therefore, neither should we [be].” The lack of chemistry between them is in line with the source material as Conan Doyle’s original Sherlock had little interest in romance anyway. In “The Adventure of The Lion’s Mane,” the detective explained: “Women have seldom been an attraction to me, for my brain has always governed my heart.” In the absence of that will-theywon’t-they tension employed by so many television dramas and comedies, the show relies on solid acting and clever dialog as the mysteries unfold each week. While acting as a consultant for the NYPD, Holmes leads Watson through an investigation, which

offers viewers many twists and turns before a final resolution as Holmes nabs the bad guy or gal in true Sherlock Holmes fashion. In fact, the modern Holmes pays tribute to the original in many ways. In addition to inheriting his uncanny powers of deduction, Miller’s Holmes boasts many other attributes of Doyle’s detective. He seems to have a good grasp of forensics and often uses this knowledge to solve cases that, for whatever reason, baffle NYPD detectives. Much like the initial Holmes, “Elementary’s” sleuth is financially secure, thanks no doubt to his business consultant father. Even Sherlock’s penchant for drugs factors into the CBS adaptation Doyle’s Watson disapproved of his colleague’s cocaine use, however, with the exception of a relapse at the end of season 3, Miller’s Holmes isn’t an active user in the CBS drama. Interestingly, Miller famously rose to prominence as another addict in the 1996 film “Trainspotting,” in which he starred as con artist Sick Boy. He’s also widely remembered for his role in the cult classic “Hackers” (1995), which featured a young Angelina Jolie (“Girl, Interrupted,” 1999). Liu’s Watson bears some similarity to Doyle’s original as well. Both characters are medical doctors, though the modern Watson left the profession after losing a patient, which is how she

came to work with Holmes as his sober-living companion. Doyle’s Watson also occasionally shared a flat with Holmes, and both versions of the character revere Holmes’ ability to solve crimes. After paying her dues with roles in commercials, theater, TV and movies, Liu really captured the attention of audiences as Ling Woo in the hit TV series “Ally McBeal.” The role, which was created specifically for her, earned her an Emmy nomination and led to parts in high-profile movies such as “Charlie’s Angels” (2000), “Kill Bill: Vol. 1” (2003) and “Lucky Number Slevin” (2006). Although similarities to the original characters are to be expected, there was initially some concern about “Elementary’s” resemblance to the BBC’s “Sherlock,” which also put a modern spin on the classic

Sherlock tale. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, the show had been around since 2010 and was a huge hit, prompting many to presume that “Elementary” was merely a copycat series. However, “Elementary” has since persevered and won over many critics. The show has earned nominations for several high-profile awards, including Emmys, Prism Awards and GLAAD Media Awards. Ratings have declined slightly since its debut season in 2012-13, but recent episodes have been gaining ground, many breaking the six million viewer mark since January, compared to an average of just over five million viewers this fall. Q: I would like to know if “Hotel Hell” and “Melissa & Joey” will return. Also, what about “The Night Shift”? A: First of all, let me congratulate you on your diverse taste in TV shows. Now let me give you a majority of good news: “Hotel Hell” and “The Night Shift” are both returning soon. Sadly, though, we’ve seen the last of “Melissa & Joey.” After a very long hiatus, “Hotel Hell” is due to return in May. Host/ chef/head profanity distributor Gordon Ramsay said so himself on his Twitter account, where he also confirmed that filming has already wrapped (so if you were hoping to nominate your own least favorite hotel, you’re too late for season 3). “The Night Shift,” a medical drama about former military medical personnel running a hospital in Texas, was renewed for a third season last spring. There’s been no word yet on a return date. You’re right to wonder about all three they would normally have returned by now. “Hotel Hell” hasn’t aired a new episode since 2014 which is fair, since Ramsay has been busy filling up the rest of Fox’s schedule with his various other hospitality-related reality shows. “The Night Shift” has yet to find a home on NBC’s schedule its most recent season premiered last February, in which case it’s already overdue, however its first season aired over the summer. That now seems like the most likely scenario for season 3. As for “Melissa & Joey,” it also would have been back by now its fourth season premiered in October 2014 had it been renewed by its network, Freeform (formerly ABC Family). But it wasn’t. “Now that the kids are grown and Mel and Joe have married and are looking toward starting a family, it seemed like a natural time to bring the series to a close,” Freeform executive Karey Burke told TheWrap. com. “We are grateful to Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence and the whole cast and crew who worked so hard on this successful show.”

NBCâ€™s new medical series is based on reality By Andrew Warren TV Media Drama with heart: The network that brought audiences â€œER,â€? the runaway hit and awards show darling that wrapped in 2009 after 15 seasons, is looking to the heart of the medical ďŹ eld for its newest show literally. â€œHeartbeatâ€? which airs a special sneak peek Tuesday, March 22, and ofďŹ cially premieres Wednesday, March 23, on NBC uses the life of a real-life heart transplant surgeon as its source material. Dr. Kathy Magliato is a world-renowned surgeon, and is one of the few women in a medical ďŹ eld dominated by men. Her 2011 memoir, â€œHeart Matters,â€? is the main inspiration for the peacock networkâ€™s new drama. Thatâ€™s inspiration, not subject matter: â€œHeartbeatâ€? is no biography. The main character may take her initial cues from the real-life Dr. Magliato, but the ďŹ ctional Dr. Alexandra Panttiere, played by Melissa George, is her own woman. George is an NBC veteran, having appeared last year in the networkâ€™s short-lived series â€œThe Slapâ€? in a role she was intimately familiar with, having played the same character in the original Australian version the series. She was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2009 for her role in HBOâ€™s â€œIn Treatment,â€? and has popped up in â€œGreyâ€™s Anatomy,â€? â€œFriendsâ€? and â€œAlias.â€? As for the big screen, sheâ€™s been a ďŹ xture in creepier fare for a while, starring in â€œDark Cityâ€? (1998), â€œThe Amityville Horrorâ€? (2005) and â€œ30 Days of Nightâ€? (2007). Of course, a medical drama needs more than one doctor, and â€œHeartbeatâ€? has a whole hospitalâ€™s worth. Dave Annable (â€œRed Band Societyâ€?), Shelley Conn (â€œTerra Novaâ€?), Don Hany (â€œWhite Collar Blueâ€?), D.L. Hughley (â€œStudio 60 on the Sunset Stripâ€?) and Jamie Kennedy (â€œSon of the Mask,â€? 2005) all co-star.

â€œHeartbeat,â€? inspired by the life of Dr. Kathy Magliato, premieres Wednesday, March 23, on NBC. Modern faith: Itâ€™s a story that lays the foundations of Christianity itself: Jesus Christâ€™s last hours on Earth before his cruciďŹ xion at the hands of the Romans. These events are known as the Passion, and theyâ€™re coming to Fox in a modern-day take on these ancient happenings. On Palm Sunday, March 20, â€œThe Passion,â€? a live two-hour event, is airing on Fox. To many, the story is a familiar one: the last supper, the betrayal of Jesus by Judas and ultimately his cruciďŹ xion. This is a modern-day retelling set in todayâ€™s New Orleans, though, with musical numbers set in many of the cityâ€™s most iconic locations. Naturally, any live musical needs top-tier musical talent, and â€œThe Passionâ€? doesnâ€™t disappoint on that front. Country superstar and cooking show host Trisha Yearwood (â€œTrishaâ€™s Southern Kitchenâ€?) stars as Mary, the mother of Jesus, while Christ himself is played by award-winning singer/actor Jencarlos Canela (â€œTelenovelaâ€?). Acclaimed actor, ďŹ lmmaker and New Orleans native Tyler Perry (â€œGone Girl,â€? 2014) serves as both the host and narrator of â€œThe Passion.â€? Gospel singer Yolanda Adams, rocker Chris Daughtry (â€œAmerican Idolâ€?), singer/ actor Shane Harper (â€œGodâ€™s Not Dead,â€? 2014), singer Prince Royce and British singer/songwriter Seal all round out the cast of biblical characters. The events of the Passion have found great success on the screen before: 2004â€™s â€œThe Passion of the Christâ€? was a massive theatrical hit, despite its R rating and use of subtitles. Airing on a major network in a prime-time slot, â€œThe Passionâ€? should be a far less bloody retelling of the ďŹ nal hours of Jesusâ€™ life.
